archdes 200, the domestic, 2020
“The Domestic: An introduction to those things both familiar and unfamiliar in our understanding of home, family, privacy, identity, and community. Explores both the most intimate and the most exposed aspects of dwelling, and addresses scales ranging from the room to the block.”
Course Director: Andrew Douglas Course Coordinator: Emilio Garcia Tutor: Phillipa Newman Location: Vinegar Lane, Ponsonby, Auckland 1021 Time: Semester One, 2020
the archival object - personal exploration
Our initial exploration will position your experience and attachment to a personal domestic experience by selecting an OBJECT and a sensorial/spatial MEMORY in the context of a past residence or domestic experience.
The artefact that you choose will be mapped and modelled within a reading of Gaston Bachelard’s vertical volume of the House (The Poetics of Space, 1958) and in relation to the experiences of the student group. By doing this we will ask - What is the relationship of the INTIMATE experience to the COLLECTIVE contextual environment?
“BUILT IN” - A place and containment for the object will be designed – materially and experientially in relation to the vertical, 3-dimensional house
site and precedents
Vinegar Lane is a precinct developed on a series of blocks in Ponsonby on what was light industrial land and is still surrounded by a mixed occupation.
A site visit to the area and to some inhabitants of its environment will be made. Milieu Architects is an architectural practice which operate from the corner of Pollen and Crummer Streets. The possibility of visiting a private residential developer building is also being arranged. Research will be carried out into the built environment thus far completed in the development including: building and planning regulations, existing elevations and public space, amenity and infrastructure, landform, the layout of the existing Master Plan. Isthmus drew up the Master Plan for the area which has been populated by projects by Pete Bossley, ChrisTate, TOAArchitects, Matter, McKinney+Windeatt, Leuschke Group Architects.
A VERTICAL INHABITATION precedent will be studied through the elaboration of a section, as a means of recording and exploring vertical residential space at Vinegar Lane
vertical/residential mixed use project
One of the remaining 3 empty lots in the precinct will be assigned and a mixed-use project will be developed exploring the public/private interface with the neighbouring building and street context, together with the nature of the intimate domestic space and its vertical articulation. While taking into account the regulatory and contextual elements of the existing fabric, the project will accommodate, and elucidate, your archival object and its atmosphere. One tectonic element from the existing built projects will be incorporated into your own scheme.
