Maybach Exelero 
Have you ever wondered what happens when a trusted tire brand doesn’t find the right car to test one of its high-performing products? Fulda, a leading German tire manufacturer, solved this problem by going directly to Maybach and commissioning a sports car on which they could test their high-performance Carat Exelero wheels that were adapted for automobiles speeding up to over 350 km/h (217.48 miles per hour).
To be fair, this wasn’t the first time that Fulda turned to Maybach with a similar request. In 1938, the two companies collaborated for the first time when a Maybach model dubbed W38 Stromlinienfahrzeug was constructed as a test car for the tire company. The W38 Stromlinienfahrzeug was the inspiration for the 2004 inaugurated Exelero, so it is hardly surprising that the two automobiles have complementary styles.
The design for the absolutely mind-blowing concept car was sketched by Fredrik Burchhardt, a student at Pforzheim Design Academy. Without a doubt, that’s a pretty impressive way to start your career!
Burchhardt’s design is an ode to the original W38; thus, several style elements are shared or related. But this is not the only interesting aspect about the Maybach Exelero, so here are the features that made this limousine an unprecedented icon of elegance and power. Fulda wanted a fast, powerful vehicle, and that’s exactly what they got. The Exelero was built on the base of the Maybach 57, but the twelve-cylinder engine used in the Maybach 57 was replaced with a more powerful one. Accordingly, capacity was expanded from 5.6-liter to 5.9-liter, and turbocharging was improved. In the end, the Exelero had under the hood a 5.9-liter twin-turbo V12 engine with three valves per each cylinder. This powerful engine could generate 700 horsepower (515 kilowatts) and 752 lb-ft of torque. This could push the gigantic car to the desired maximum speed of 217 miles per hour (350 kilometers per hour).
If you have millions of dollars lying around the house, and you are into very expensive big boys’ toys, the Exelero is the perfect car for you. Without a doubt, all the executives and rappers that bought this automobile in the past expected to get the best and most innovative technology and design features for their buck. And that’s exactly what they got!
When it was inaugurated, the Exelero was the quintessence of luxury and opulence. From the impressive dimensions, nearly 7 feet wide, 20 feet long, and 5 feet tall, to the weight of 2.66 tons, everything about the Exelero screamed supercar made for massive wealth. Accordingly, the vehicle's silhouette had a mesmerizing shape that resembled the cars of comic-book villains. The rounded edges, elongated silhouette and smooth lines recalled the W38, which served as inspiration. Meanwhile, the long doors made quite a statement thanks to their impressive sizing.
The cabin was as impressive as one would expect from a car that was initially retailed for $5,000,000. Black and bright red dominated, and they were the colors selected for the dash, doors and leather upholstery on the seats. The glossy black carbon fiber inserts were a pleasant touch. Elsewhere, the sport seats had bright red accents, while the harness-style four-point seat belts were red.
Presented in Berlin in 2005, the Maybach Exelero was an instant success. Interestingly enough, 18 years later, this car is still associated with immense affluence and privilege. It’s worth noting that the price of the Exelero only increased in the past years, boosted not only by the performance aspect but also by scarcity.
As a one-off built vehicle, the Maybach Exelero is truly one of the rarest automobiles in the world.

Mercedes-Maybach Série 240: O melhor automóvel do mundo faz 25 anos
Em julho de 2002, a Daimler Chrysler AG apresentava ao mundo uma proposta que viria a redefinir o segmento do luxo. O Maybach Series 240 representava o pináculo da indústria automóvel e seria considerado, por muitos analistas, o melhor automóvel do mundo. Um quarto de século depois, os Mercedes-Maybach continuam a ditar as regras no mais exclusivo dos segmentos e a serem sinónimo de excelência e de uma quase obsessiva atenção ao detalhe.

Em 2002, a então Daimler Chrysler AG apresentou um automóvel de topo absolutamente visionário e que seria sinónimo de estatuto e requinte levados ao extremo: o Maybach (modelo da série 240). Este prestigiado automóvel de luxo estabeleceu novos padrões no seu segmento - o pináculo absoluto do mercado de automóveis de passageiros. Ao mesmo tempo, remetia para a história dos automóveis Maybach dos anos 1920 e 1930. O sinal de partida para o desenvolvimento foi dado pelo Conselho de Administração numa resolução de 18 de julho de 1998. Apenas oito meses antes, no 32º Salão Automóvel de Tóquio, a empresa tinha apresentado o estudo para um novo automóvel de luxo numa classe à parte e que prometia estabelecer novos padrões na atenção ao detalhe e na possibilidade de personalização.

O chefe do projeto foi o Prof. Hermann Gaus. "Desde muito cedo no projeto, foram decididas algumas importantes características de equipamento que teriam de figurar no caderno de encargos: bancos reclináveis, um bar e um sistema de comunicação na traseira, um teto de vidro electrocromático, ecrãs sensíveis ao toque, o chassis com Active Body Control (ABC) e o motor V12", recorda Hermann Gaus. O Professor baseou-se na sua vasta experiência e para promover um desenvolvimento mais rápido, criou uma equipa de cerca de 100 colaboradores. Para garantir que os processos de decisão não atrasariam o projeto, mudaram-se para um gabinete fora da fábrica de Sindelfingen. Ainda assim, as decisões com impacto no calendário e nos custos foram sempre mantidas de forma transparente. Além disso, conseguiu sensibilizar a equipa para as expectativas de uma clientela tão exigente. Graças a tudo isto, o automóvel final chegou ao mercado em 2002 após apenas cinco anos de desenvolvimento. Houve duas versões, que foram sendo construídas até 2013: o Maybach 57 e o Maybach 62, este último ainda mais comprido e com uma maior distância entre-eixos.

Deixando meio-mundo de queixo caído, os Maybach combinavam a mestria dos artesãos da Mercedes e uma quase obsessiva atenção ao detalhe com as características técnicas e tecnológicas que faltavam aos seus rivais mais “clássicos”.
Maybach 57 S e 62 S, elevar a fasquia
Em 2005, a Mercedes quis elevar ainda mais a fasquia e apresentou duas versões de alto desempenho. Primeiro surgiu o 57 S e, em 2006, o Maybach 62 S - a berlina de motorista mais potente do mundo produzida em série.

O "S" na designação do modelo significava "Special" (especial) e refletia o facto de a Maybach ter incorporado nesta versão ainda mais potente uma grande variedade de características especificadas pelos seus clientes mais exigentes. Em particular, os entusiastas do automóvel que desejavam conduzir eles próprios o seu Maybach. Assim, o 57 S procura atingir a simbiose perfeita entre o conforto, o luxo e um comportamento (quase) desportivo. No modelo 57 S, esta receita mágica é assegurada pelo motor V12 biturbo de 6,0 litros modificado pela Mercedes-AMG, com uma potência de 450 kW/612 cv e um binário máximo de 1000 Nm, e por uma configuração de suspensão mais firme, mas mantendo o conforto que se espera de uma berlina de representação. O Maybach 62 S - a quarta variante do modelo - constituiu a base para o Maybach Landaulet, uma variante de teto recolhível que elevou o luxo a um extremo nunca antes vistos. O 62 S oferecia uma nova dimensão de conforto em viagem, especialmente para os passageiros no compartimento traseiro. Para além de uma potência prodigiosa - como o modelo 57 S, também o 62 S está equipado com o motor de doze cilindros com 450 kW/612 cv - este foi especialmente concebido para ser conduzido por um motorista e satisfaz as mais elevadas exigências em termos de espaço, conforto e dinamismo. A amplitude e o conforto proporcionam uma viagem relaxante, enquanto o dinamismo permite ganhar tempo - dois aspetos fundamentais no mundo moderno.

Em contraste com a configuração mais desportiva do modelo 57 S, que apresenta uma suspensão mais firme, os engenheiros da Maybach mantiveram as taragens da suspensão no 62 S, a fim de alcançar um nível de conforto de condução excecional - na verdade, provavelmente insuperável. Embora a suspensão marque o auge absoluto da engenharia automóvel em termos de conforto, também possui excelentes características dinâmicas para transferir de forma fiável a potência para a estrada em todos os momentos. Vor allem junge Menschen können die Marke nicht klar zuordnen. Viele denken noch an die alten Maybach Modelle wie 62 oder 57, welche schon lange nicht mehr produziert werden.
