Subjangle is at it again. They have a knack for uncovering great pop artists who have been laboring for years and years as unrecognized songsmiths. Their roster is full of examples - The Photocopies, Grand Drifter, 3 A.M. Again, and The Umbrella Puzzles immediately come to mind.

Now comes Huw Darling and his two projects, The Spanish Amanda and The Chickpea Darlings (both based in England). Both projects remind me of McCarthy, Northern Portrait, The Smiths and Maxwell Farrington and Le SuperHomard.

We've posted multiple times about French expat living in London, Louis Philippe. He's a crooner in the Neil Hannon mold, but on Azure he sounds much more like XTC, and for good reason. Dave Gregory plays on the album and one song was written by Andy Partridge. There is a definite "Skylarking" feel to this album.

But some of the melodies also remind me of Ryan Power, Scritti Politti or Maxwell Farrington and LeSuperHomard

This was originally released on CD in 1999 on French Label XIII BIS Records and Japanese label Trattoria. You can find copies on Discogs for both - although that Japanese issue is expensive. It is BEGGING for a reissue.
