Executive Suite

I’ve rarely watched a movie with as divided a consciousness as I did with Robert Wise’s EXECUTIVE SUITE (1954, TCM, Max, Hulu). It’s a crackerjack melodrama about corporate politics, meticulously directed by Wise, beautifully written by Ernest Lehman and, for the most part, strongly acted by an all-star cast. Watching it now, however, it’s hard not to miss parallels to politics 2025-style and be appalled by the treatment of the female characters.
Avery Bullard, president of a furniture factory in one of those soap opera small towns that’s always an easy flight from anywhere else in the U.S., dies suddenly in New York. This triggers a power struggle that will determine the company’s soul going forward. Will the presidency go to comptroller Loren Shaw (Fredric March), whose only allegiance is to short-term profits, or design and development V.P. Don Walling (William Holden), who wants to look after the employees and maintain the quality of their product. The machinations are fascinating and clearly tell you whom you want to win. March blackmails his fellow executives and tries to take advantage of Bullard’s ex-mistress (Barbara Stanwyck) to win her proxy. Holden doesn’t want to go for the job until he realizes there’s nobody else suitable who wants it and then proceeds through inspiration.

Lehman’s script has a lot of good dialog, maybe too much for most directors. It took someone like Wise, who came out of the editing booth, to keep things moving. He uses a subjective camera in the first scene, pulling us into the world through Bullard’s eyes just before he dies. Then he breaks up the long dialog scenes with cutting that emphasizes relationships and a moving camera to keep the tension going. Producer John Houseman also made the then novel decision to play the entire film with only natural sound. There’s no musical score. Even the opening titles play against a clock tower’s bells with the names of the all-star cast coming at you with each new toll. It enhances the illusion of reality in a piece that could be seen as GRAND HOTEL (1932) in a board room.
And the cast, most of them chosen for their ability to handle a dialog-heavy script, delivers. March crafts a fascinating character. You can’t root for him, but there’s something about his humanity that keeps you from hating him. He has one inspired bit of business. At his desk, he wipes his face with his pocket handkerchief and then opens a drawer to reveal a box of clean handkerchiefs. He’s as fastidious about himself as he is about his accounts, and he almost seems trapped by that. The film is also filled with wonderful close-ups: Stanwyck ignoring a reporter’s call about Bullard’s death, Walter Pidgeon as the company’s treasurer realizing he’s not cut out to be the next president and Holden realizing he has to go after the job himself. Nina Foch doesn’t even need close-ups to capture every layer of her role as Bullard’s secretary. In an early sequence in which she goes to each V.P.’s office to call them to a board meeting, you can tell how she feels about each man through subtle glances and inflections. The only person who’s not always on top of things is June Allyson as Holden’s wife. She’s fine playing supportive wife and caring mother and looks particularly sweet helping her son (Tim Considine) practice for his Little League game. But early on she has a scene that requires her to push Holden to fight for a better place at the company. Her voice and face just don’t support that little Lady Macbeth moment, and it rings false. That’s the same problem she had when she took on the shrewish wife in THE SHRIKE (1955), though by the time she tackled a more vicious character in THEY ONLY KILL THEIR MASTERS (1972), age had given her a leg up on that type of role, and she delivered a strong performance.
Listening to the board room debate that climaxes the film, it’s hard not to see the contemporary parallels to March’s character, who’s all about the bottom line in as short-sighted a way as possible and views empathy as a flaw. Holden, by contrast, is a voice for progressive humanism. Or he would be if he and the film didn’t treat the women like objects. Foch is just an employee. Her subtle attitudes are the only power she wields. Allyson is a wife. Her husband doesn’t even confide all his plans in her, and when she argues against his seeking the presidency, it’s treated as some kind of aberration, a violation of her wifely duties. At least Stanwyck’s character has an excuse for letting herself be used — she’s going through a breakdown (which she plays beautifully, of course). In her one scene with Allyson, Stanwyck warns the wife that her husband will occasionally choose his job over her, “but then he’ll aways come back to you.” Having heard her complain that Bullard had dumped her to focus on the company, it’s hard not to yell “As if…” at the screen.

What are you going through in your life right now?
Don’t feel you’re the only one.
Open your eyes.
Open your heart to your connections with your larger family.
Let them share their stories with you.
Let them share their strengths, hopes, fears, and joys.
Stop looking for what’s different and what makes you separate and apart.
Go on an adventure of discovering your common bonds.

"Intriga Internacional" (north by northwest) - hbo max.

What is The Panic of '29?
Max Friedman: I've been calling it a screwball tragedy. It's an alternate history comedy that imagines an America wherein, on October 29, 1929, beginning with the Wall Street Crash, history bends, and in place of the New Deal, an American apocalypse takes place. We follow this hilarious band of misfits, everyone from crime writers to a bar proprietress to cabaret singers and Wall Street secretaries, as they find their way into a collectivist future through an authoritarian regime.
Will Roland: I've been calling it a slapstick Lehman Trilogy meets the Fallout series.
Max: Part of what makes the play great is that, although the subject matter and themes are pretty weighty, it is primarily an afternoon or evening of entertainment.
How did you both get involved with this piece?
Max: Less Than Rent has been developing the play with Graham for a while, and I have been developing two of Graham's other plays. He'd been working on the script for quite a while, though he was kind of keeping this one to himself. It came to me about nine months ago and we had the opportunity to do two table reads, and now we're really guns blazing. When I read the script, one of the first things I felt was Will's voice leaping off the page at me in the role of Jimmy Armstrong. Graham says that Jimmy is sort of like his stand-in, and Will does a really good job of being Graham's voice in the action.
Will: I was so tickled by the script from the very beginning. Graham's style is truly unique. You can feel his roots as a humorist in the way that the dialogue exists. The language is incredibly dense, which I have an absolute blast with. Every line is like five sentences long. He's a wordsmith who loves language and loves to play with repetition. So the combination of Graham's style with the content of the play. I'm really preoccupied by society and economics and group social contracts, and this play is interested in how individual people exists within social contacts, within economies, within rules of law, and what happens when certain elements crumble and break apart.

Stock market, fame & part-time catering gigs
Somehow, all three picks ended up being shows starring Ken Marino so I’m declaring this week to be a Ken Marino appreciation week which you can also celebrate by watching his work. Or, you could just watch them because he’s hilarious.
Black Monday (2019- )
I can’t tell you how much I love this show. This is one of my favorite shows of all time. It’s clever. It’s hilarious. And it’s unpredictable. If I had to describe it in one word, I’d say it’s irreverent. It’s about the 1987 stock market crash which was the largest one-day percentage drop in the history of the Dow Jones Industrial Average but it also isn’t because it’s all made up. I’d even say it’s crazier than The Wolf of Wall Street because it doesn’t have to stick to the facts. Honestly, I’d even skip the trailer and go in blind and watch the pilot, Let me tell you how it starts - it’s Black Monday, the streets of Wall Street clearly in crisis mode. The focus shifts to a bright red stretch Lamborghini which rolls to a stop. The driver gets out to polish the hood and wait around for his boss to come in. And then, someone drops down from the building onto the roof of the car, which crumbles under him. I know what it sounds like but I assure you, this is definitely a comedy. It’s possibly Don Cheadle’s best work and it deserves some attention because he absolutely deserves more recognition than his most famous role as the second-choice US government’s soldier version of Iron Man. It also has Regina Hall, Andrew Rannels, Casey Wilson, and Ken Marino (who plays the twin Lehman Brothers - not related to the real Lehman Brothers who weren’t twins and were three in number) giving great performances. The show moves beyond Black Monday after Season 1 and they’ve still managed to keep it interesting. Season 3 aired earlier this year and it hasn’t been renewed or cancelled yet.
Watch the Trailer
Three seasons of Black Monday are streaming on Showtime.
The Other Two (2019- )
This isn’t your traditional sitcom. Sure, it’s set in New York City. Sure, they even have real hosts announcing the news. But it’s a comically exaggerated version that unabashedly parodies reality and modern culture. As a YouTube commentator called it, “it’s not satire, it’s advanced satire”. There are a lot of similarities to real-life people and events that aren’t coincidental. I don’t know how they managed to pull it off but it might be because it doesn’t take itself too seriously, signaling that you shouldn’t either. It’s about two millennial siblings who are struggling to ‘make it’ in New York City. Cary (Drew Tarver) is a struggling actor. His sister, Brooke (Heléne Yorke), used to be a professional dancer and is now… trying to figure things out. Things aren’t going well but they also aren’t bad. Until their little 13-year-old brother, Chase (Case Walker), becomes an overnight pop sensation, getting 22 million hits on a song called ‘Marry U at Recess’ and he’s immediately taken under the wing of a somewhat incompetent manager (Ken Marino). ChaseDreams is hailed as the “sexy new singer in town” and “the next big white kid” who starts getting invites to movie premiers, invitations from school dances of his millions of teen fans, and begins living in Justin Theroux’s ridiculous former apartment. I’d say one thing, it’s very memorable because it’s another show that goes where you didn’t think they could go.
Watch the Trailer
The two seasons of The Other Two are streaming on HBO Max with the show greenlit for another season.
Party Down (2009-2010 | 2022?)
I didn’t see this when it originally aired in 2009 (which is 12 years ago???) and when I finally did watch it recently, it was just me looking at the screen going - isn’t that ___ from ___ for practically the whole pilot and then again every other episode. Apart from the actors you see above*, the show also starred Megan Mullaly, Jennifer Coolidge, J. K. Simmons, Ken Jeong, and Kristen Bell. That still isn’t the full list. Even Kevin Hart and George Takei made appearances. You can just go in knowing it has the biggest names in comedy, it’s impossible to fuck up something when you have such a brilliant cast (well, almost impossible). But if you do need to know what it’s about, it’s about a bunch of struggling actors trying to make it in Hollywood while working at a catering company (spoiler alert - they’re not the best caterers). But they do get to go to the craziest parties. It’s not as crazy as the other shows but it’s a solid comedy and it’s getting a revival soon with almost all the original cast members returning so it’s a great time to catch up and then recommend this to others so they can watch it too.
*To spare you the whole where-have-I-seen-this-actor-let-me-check-IMDB process, I’m giving you a list for the main cast:
Martin Starr - who you may know as Gilfoyle from Silicon Valley
Ryan Hansen - who you may know as Dick from Veronica Mars
Lizzy Caplan - who you may know as Virginia from Masters of Sex
Adam Scott - who you may know as Ben from Parks & Recreation
Ken Marino - who doesn’t need an introduction at this point but you may have also seen him in Veronica Mars and Brooklyn Nine-Nine
Jane Lynch - who also doesn’t need an introduction, but you may have seen her as Sue in Glee
Watch the Trailer
The original Party Down is streaming on Starz.
Until next time,
V

"This has brought us time to reflect and be thankful for simple, yet extraordinary things, that we often take for granted—like the air we breathe or the safety of loved ones. Though we should all take care of one another during this time, this piece makes my heart reflect on those that live alone or in isolation with 'me, myself, and I'. Close your eyes to envision the sun shining over your body and radiating your cells to good health and calling for mental and physical well-being. This sculpture reminds me of strength, courage, and perseverance. The braids remind me of the vines of the earth—braided and intertwined, showing we are all one."

The video starts part of the way through the first number. Act Two starts after the bus explodes. Please do not post screenshots of this video on Twitter ever. Gifs on Tumblr are okay after the NFT date, but don't go linking things to actors and shows. The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical - Off-Broadway - August 20, 2014 FORMAT: VOB (with smalls) (SD) CAST: Eric Meyers (Percy Jackson), Kristin Stokes (Annabeth Chase), Jordan Stanley (Grover/Mr. D), Parker Drown (Luke & others), Zakiya Young (Sally Jackson & others), Graham Stevens (Chiron & others) The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical - Off-Broadway - April 15, 2017 (Highlights) FORMAT: MOV (HD) | TRADER'S NOTES: Working on uploading, PLEASE DO NOT REQUEST CAST: Chris McCarrell (Percy Jackson), Kristin Stokes (Annabeth Chase), George Salazar (Grover/Mr. D), James Hayden Rodriguez (Luke & others), Carrie Compere (Sally Jackson & others), Sarah Beth Pfeifer (Clarisse & others), Jonathan Raviv (Chiron & others) NOTES: Collection of 15 clips. Non-consecutive. It's a really obstructed video, and it only has 50 minutes of the show. Highlights include: Put You In Your Place, The Campfire Song, The Oracle, Good Kid, Killer Quest!, Lost!, My Grand Plan, Drive, DOA, Son of Poseidon, The Last Day of Summer, and Bring on the Monster. Several of the songs are incomplete, and there are some other scenes as well. Shot from one of the boxes, resulting in an extreme angle (think near-perpendicular) so you can see into the wings and watch the actors slacking. Sound is great and it’s very well shot for a vid of its age though there is a touch of gen loss. Circle of Life is near perfect despite a little bit of washout. The Lion King - National Tour - June 5, 2010 FORMAT: VOB (no smalls) (SD) CAST: Andre Jackson (Simba), Brent Harris (Scar), Frank Wright II (u/s Mufasa), Marja Harmon (Nala), Phindile Mkhize (Rafiki), Jered Tanner (u/s Pumbaa), Sophia Stephens (u/s Shenzi), Jerome Stephens Jr (Young Simba), Jamariana Tribble (Young Nala) NOTES: A couple of blackouts during Circle of Life and first couple of minutes of act two, otherwise nice capture. The first 11 minutes after the overture are mostly blackouts due to late comers, after that no real problems. Bret did a nice job as understudy. Sierra and Sherie still rock with much greatness! Also includes the Part of Your World performance and interview on The View. A- The Little Mermaid - The Netherlands - 2012 (Highlights) FORMAT: VOB (no smalls) (SD) CAST: Jantien Euwe/Tessa van Tol (Ariel), Britt Lenting (u/s Ursula), Mischa Kiek/Tommie Christiaan (Prince Eric), Roberto de Groot (Sebastian) NOTES: Highlights for about 35 minutes from different shows The Little Mermaid - The Netherlands - 2013 FORMAT: MP4 (HD) CAST: Tessa van Tol (Ariel), Ellis van Laarhoven (alt Ursula), Tommie Christiaan (Prince Eric), Marc-Peter van der Maas (u/s King Triton), Juan Wells (Sebastian), Martijn Vogel (Flounder) NOTES: No zooms and some heads in the way. A- Little Shop of Horrors - Encores! Off-Center - July 2, 2015 (Matinee) (SunsetBlvd79's master) FORMAT: VOB (no smalls) (SD) CAST: Jake Gyllenhaal (Seymour), Ellen Greene (Audrey), Joe Grifasi (Mushnik), Taran Killam (Orin), Eddie Cooper (Audrey II), Marva Hicks (Crystal), Ramona Keller (Ronnette), Tracy Nicole Chapman (Chiffon) NOTES: Beautiful HD capture of the Encores Summer Series. Ellen and Jake were perfection and this was the 2015 show that was not to be missed! The last 15 mins (customers coming in and song/scene finale don't feed the plants) are mostly blind shot, where a few times no action can be seen. Everything else is there and beautiful. There is some drifting in Act One, but it isn’t as prevalent in Act Two. There are a lot of obstructions, but I was (mostly) able to film around them. The only part that was really blocked was Somewhere That’s Green. Somewhere That’s Green (Reprise) is the only majorly whitewashed part, but other than that it’s not too much of an issue. Overall, it’s a pretty decent capture of the show, considering it’s my first video master. Little Women - Broadway - December 11, 2004 (Preview) FORMAT: VOB (no smalls) (SD) CAST: Sutton Foster (Jo), Danny Gurwin (Laurie), Megan McGinnis (Beth), Jenny Powers (Meg), Amy McAlexander (Amy), Maureen McGovern (Marmee), Janet Carroll (Aunt March), John Hickok (Professor Bhaer), Robert Stattel (Mr. Laurence), Jim Weitzer (Mr. Brooke) NOTES: Excellent video capture of the show!
