This photo, taken on 25 June 1848, is the first in the history of photography ever used to illustrate a news story.
The photograph shows the Rue Saint-Maur-Popincourt in Paris during the June Days Uprising, full of barricades that were used in a battle between government forces and demonstrating workers.
The photo was published as an engraving in L'Illustration, 1-8 July 1848.

Daring a thought, but I genuinely think the Gerudo Valley's theme in OoT does so much heavy lifting in characterizing the gerudos as more than what they appear to be. There's a sense of gentle endurance to the never-ending rythm, it's super catchy but it's also strangely melancholic, strangely hopeful, and the brass comes reinforcing these two characteristics even harder; the two brasses in chorus giving the piece unity in heart. To top it all off, the hispanic influences give a richness and a maure-like history that deepens the other oriental themes of the other pieces of soundtrack connected to the gerudos, and it just... says so very much about this people, who they are, what they want, what their conflict could be?
I think there's no denying the almost shocking contrast that comes with going into Gerudo Valley for the first time, birthplace of Mr. Evil Guy and his pack of wicked thieves, and then being hit by... this.
The singular beauty and uniqueness of that setting, and everything wordlessly implied in that tune.

Maur. Seems like a nice guy. But he must be pretty far off the "normal" bell curve himself, seeing he is happy to chop up dead bodies for reanimation experiments, not to talk of the baby hand fetish. Any canon history how he became who he was? You mentioned he's brilliant and obsessive, something Lady liked. Got it. But did he largely turn into that after he joined the Black Tongues/got his torc, or was he like that before? I mean Bastion seems maybe 35%/65% on that before/after battyness scale.
Maur was a perfectly successful artificer with a perfectly pleasant wife, and a few perfectly adequate children. Then he got very bored. His work wasn't satisfying him, his wife was busy with her own career, his kids were busy with school, he couldn't pass the psych evaluation to work with plods, and he just wanted MORE. He got so depressed he decided to go jump off a bridge. No one would miss him.
The crows certainly didn't. A big squawking flock that dove beak-first at his head as he headed for the railing. They scratched him up and gave him such a fright he lost his nerve and went right back home.
That night, he had his first visit from Lady Ilganyag. Then he knew what he wanted for himself...
The marriage didn't last much longer and he hasn't talked to his kids in years and years. Otherwise he loves his life. The Ruckmearkha stuff is very troubling though. He misses Master Ballanstern and the quiet of Juste in the before-times. His misses Bastion, too, and the pleasant afternoons embalming bodies with him while gossiping about the others Brothers' work. Sometimes a niece comes and visits him. She tidies his living quarters in Juste, tells him news of the outside world, and brings him some of his favourite snacks. The only real fight Maur and Bastion ever had was when Bastion kept trying to bed her. She's cute!

"Scholars have re-evaluated the patronage role of Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitaine. Examining surviving works from the Plantagenet court, specific evidence of their commissioning is limited. Especially in the case of literary production in Anglo-Norman, Karen Broadhurst has shown that, of the various texts generally held up as part of the cultural production patronised by Henry II, only two were unequivocally commissioned by him: Wace’s Roman de Rou (1160–1170) and Benoît de Saint Maure’s Chronique des Ducs de Normandie (1170–1180), while the other texts can instead be seen as indicating authors’ presumptions about the king’s interests. As far as Eleanor is concerned, there is no evidence directly linking her to systematic advocacy of literature in French, and her influence on the writing of courtly romances cannot be demonstrated. Further developing Karen Broadhurst’s studies on French literature, John Gillingham has reviewed historians’ enthusiastic view of Henry II’s interest in history. Of the various historical works in Latin, the only text that seems to have been directly commissioned by Henry II turns out to be De Majoratu et Senescalcia Franciae, composed in 1158 by Hugh de Claye. Moreover, during the reign of Henry II, many authors—including Richard fitzNigel, Peter of Blois, John of Marmoutier, Gerald of Wales, and Robert of Torigni—proposed historical works to the court but received little atten tion from the king. Gillingham’s analysis recognises that the production of historical works was the expression of the court’s tastes rather than indicating the influence of royal patronage.
A survey of direct patronage by Henry II confirms the king’s inclination for realpolitik as also applied in the field of literary production. The historiographical works commissioned by Henry II were written in the f irst period of his reign, while he was consolidating the bases of his authority over the vast space he was to rule. The works of Wace and Benoit recount the story of the Anglo-Norman kingdom, justifying why an Angevin such as Henry II would have been crowned king. The choice of Anglo-Norman as the language in which to compose these texts was well suited to pursuing this aim in that it enabled the texts to reach an audience of Anglo-Norman nobility directly rather than remaining solely within ecclesiastical circles. The history written by Hugh de Claye recounts how the king of France Louis VI supposedly gave the Counts of Anjou the title of Seneschal of France, reinforcing the Angevin position in Maine and Normandy before Henry II’s expedition to Brittany.
As noted by Ian Short, although the English king and queen cannot be demonstrated to have directly influenced production as patrons through texts dedicated to them, they can still be seen to have exerted influence if we consider the movement of literati who became involved with their courts. To evaluate the motivations of this flock of authors, we must keep in mind that the texts scholars have held up to argue that Henry II’s court was complementary to the king often date from 1170 onwards as well, and as such they are subsequent to the consolidation of his reign and the beginning of conflict with his sons. For royal courtiers, proclaiming the authority of the king of England was another way to assert their own roles. Each author’s principal concern was his own position just as the king’s main concern was his royal authority, and this explains why their works, although not commissioned by the king, did find a favourable reception. Martin Aurell has provided a comprehensive overview of the cultural production of Henry II’s court as a literary transposition of the policies pursued by the English king, showing that the courtiers who theo rised about royal power in England were the same men who participated in the administrative machine of the kingdom and created the specific Angevin courtly culture and its legitimising narratives. The construction of the political ethic of kingdom administration and the construction of the related ideology was thus carried out by the same men and in the same period, starting from 1170 when Henry II’s rule was first contested and then reinforced by his victories."

ok but what if blue sword/temeraire fusion?
Some timeline squishing might be involved, because blue sword is set 20 years after temeraire
plot bunnies, not all connected:
-> the gang has to travel through Damar to reach Istanbul during BPW. This is an Issue because Damarians have a bad history with a large black dragon trying to conquer the country. Temeraire is treated in Damar like Lien is in China. They are helped by a mysterious red-haired stranger
-> Tharkay has a little of the Damarian Gift and every time he has to deal with something emotionally fraught his eyes turn gold. Things tend to break when he is angry, and he has a noticeable habit of keeping his hands to himself when upset. Laurence keeps noticing the light in Tharkay's eyes the same way the British characters notice Harry's kelar.
During the fountain scene Tharkay's eyes are burning gold and Laurence either stuns Tharkay by taking the full force of them and/or Tharkay confuses Laurence by preempively apologizing for the migraine Laurence is going to have in the morning
-> or LAURENCE is Damarian and he is maternal cousins with the Crewes. His "stiff with honor" attitude is him unconsciously keeping himself from setting things on fire. Accidents can be deadly on a ship!
• Every time someone runs interference for Laurence about to say or something he regrets out of temper, it's really his friends and allies noticing his kelar acting up (whether they know about it or not) and stepping in before he accidentally makes an admiral choke on a fishbone.
(If he learns about the kelar during the series it's kind of traumatic for his identity as an Englishman. Bonus points for everyone expecting him to do a kelar assisted jump onto Temeraire's back during the amnesia arc and then not doing that.
He heals Tharkay instinctively when Tharkay is found but modern kelar is meant for war, not healing. It's the only time Laurence ever heals and it's very painful for both Laurence and Tharkay
• (Tharkay's hands are fine but he has a huge burn scar on his right forearm in the shape of Laurence's hand for the rest of his life)
• Laurence's memories are back but he feels like he's been concussed all over again
• Bonus points for the encounter with the king's madness (George's) poetically paired with the king's madness (kelar).)
• Laurence is blindsided after the war to find out that the maternal great aunt his father was kind of weird about was very important and bby cousin Angharad dropped a mountain on an army is now queen of a foreign country. He won't admit it but he's briefly very annoyed that Richard abandoned his post.
Laurence is running hot during the dinner party in Black Power War, and people can't look him in the eye. Tharkay’s first impression of this British aviator having dinner with these holier-than-thou East India Company peacocks isn’t just the Chinese coat and impeccable manners even when drunk and pissed off (doesn't someone with the Damarian Gift know not to get drunk? Is he a fool or an idiot?) —it’s the blue eyes flashing gold to almost literally pin Tharkay in place.
‐> no timeline squishing at all and we substitute Damarian dragons for the Damarian horses. Imagine if Tsornin and Isfahel could talk! Red Wind is Harry's first mentor.
• The legends of Aerin fire-hair are of Aerin and the elderly dragon Talat defeating the tyrant dragon Maur.
• The laprun trials are held in the air, and are almost more about the dragon's right to bear arms than the rider. Dragons ALSO wear sashes, and it's considered bad form in the trials to damage the other dragon's rider or the rider's harness --the trials are a test of skill and self control.
Tsornin is ALSO jealous of Narknon and keeps threatening to eat her. Narknon does not care at all.

I had the greatest day/ night yesterday.
Somehow I was lucky enough to be invited to MICHIGAN FASHION WEEK....!!!! And as a VIP guest! Obviously I spent 3/5 days last week shopping, putting together the most perfect, yet effortless, outfit to coordinate with my date. He, being a guy, decided on pairing navy pants, a creme shirt, with a navy jacket, which took him about 5 minutes. His gold chain added a tasteful touch. He looked like an exec sitting courtside at a game- serious, casual, and clean.
I spent about 5 hours at the mall then dragged my sister to Von Maur to pick out the perfect pair of shoes and a nice bag. I didn't get to wear my after party outfit (which was totally giving Blair Waldorf). Whatever. Pre-Event shopping might be one of the greatest vibes. I was on a mission. Plus- my sister's got great taste and being advised by her is a magical thing. You leave satisfied.
So Friday at around 7 we arrived at the Eastern Market Shed 3. Gift bags were being handed to us, there were models posing on cars, and the sea of people ahead were wearing the most fabulous outfits I've ever seen. The air was filled with smoke and lights. I felt completely exhilarated and at peace. In all of the many places and situations this world has to offer, I feel the best in ones just like these.
Photo for reference.

Ok. The show was AMAZING. Yes I'm a total optimist and truly believe most things people do and create is inevitably fantastic. But when I tell youuuuu how stunning some of these dresses were. Daydreams of wearing them at picnics, raves, fabulous clubs and underground concerts were constant. Galas and balls and cuddled up in bed. I had this realization: ART and FASHION is goddamn divine. I mean how beautiful is it, that people dedicate their time to making our lives so colorful and intricate and lovely! Clothing, more than most other things, represents the complexity of humans, the parallels between cherishing our history and celebrating how far we've come, the tension between our traditions and our newfound freedom. Clothing is more than expression. It's passion, engineering, reason, and time itself personified. It's so awesome. I'll go into details on some of the designers on one of my next posts.

INN:
Skeleton crew (Stephen King)
Korte grøss (Aamodt/Svingen/etc)
-
Men altså, draug-lesa!)

"Did you know that Lithuanians have participated in every American war, from the Revolutionary to present?
Here are a few famous and less famous:
Felixas Miklaševičius, a Lithuanian nobleman who was recruited by the Continental Congress as a privateer to prey upon British ships during America's Revolutionary War.
Thaddeus Kosciuszko or more accurately, Taddas Kosciuška, born in the territory of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, proclaimed to Lithuanians in 1794, "Lithuania-my fellow countrymen and compatriots. I was born on your soil and in my ardor for my homeland there is within me a special inclination toward those among whom I began my life...Lithuania...glorious for valor and citizenship...I vow to stand amidst you." Also, in the introduction of his last will and testament written in Paris in 1798, it states: "I, Thaddeus Kosciuszko, formerly an officer of the United States of America, and a native of Lithuania...." We know that Kosciuska's engineering background helped him build fortifications that allowed Americans to beat the British. For his service, Kosciuska was awarded the rank of Brigadier General.
Ann Bernatitus, daughter of Alexander and Margaret Adamaitis, a Navy nurse known as the Angel of Bataan, was the first American of any service to receive the Legion of Merit for her heroic service in Manila, Bataan, and Corregidor during WWII. Today, her portrait is proudly displayed in the US Pentagon.
Stanley Bender, who worked in the slaughter houses of Chicago, and later as a taxi driver, was an American Lithuanian and the recipient of the United States military's highest decoration-the Medal of Honor-for his actions in WWII. On August 17, near La Londe-les-Maures, France, he single-handedly silenced two German machine gun emplacements and led his squad in the destruction of the remainder of a German strong point. From 1946-1949, Bender was a member of American Legion's Lithuanian Darius-Girenas Post and was a member of its command.
History has taught us that whenever or wherever there is a call to serve, or wherever the fight for freedom may be, you may rest assured a Lithuanian will be there."
By National Lithuanian American Hall of Fame.

Marble lace neckerchief carved by French sculptor Louis-Philippe Mouchy (1734-1801), who masterfully created the marble statue in 1781.
The statue was commissioned as a posthumous tribute to the Duke of Montausier, Charles de Sainte-Maure. The nobleman was one of the guardians of the Great Dauphin of France, Louis, son and heir of the Sun King, Louis XIV.

The etymology and history behind Zoe's full name
First name: Zoe. Pronounced zoh-ee, of Greek origin meaning "life". The history of the name Zoe begins in the third century when the Alexandrian Jews translated Eve, which means 'life,' to the Greek equivalent Zoe. Zoe was in use as far back as the Roman classical period, and was popular with the early Christians, who bestowed it with hopes of eternal life, but it didn't migrate to the English-speaking world until the mid-nineteenth century. Alternate spellings include Zoey, Zoie, and Zooey.

Middle Name: Zoe has two middle names, Diana and Hippolyta.
Diana was chosen for three really specific reasons, Not only is it the name of Zoe's mother and the Roman name of the goddess Artemis, who is Diana Prince's "Godmother", it is also the name of Zoe's paternal grandmother.
Pronounced die-AN-ə. Diana means "divine, goddesslike," a derivative of Latin dia or diva meaning "goddess." It is ultimately related to the same Indo-European root *dyew- found in Zeus. Diana was a Roman goddess of the moon, hunting, forests, and childbirth, often identified with the Greek goddess Artemis.
As a given name, Diana has been regularly used since the Renaissance. It became more common in the English-speaking world following Walter Scott's novel Rob Roy (1817), which featured a character named Diana Vernon. It also appeared in George Meredith's novel Diana of the Crossways (1885). A notable bearer was the British royal Diana Spencer (1961-1997), the Princess of Wales.

Hippolyta. Chosen for Zoe's maternal grandmother, Queen of the Amazons, and ruler of Themyscira. Pronounced hi-PAHL-i-tə. Latinized form of Hippolyte.

Surname: Trevor. Pronounced TREHV-ər. Zoe's father's surname, Zoe, was born after her father's miraculous returned from the dead due to a wish her mother made in Spring 1984.
A Welsh surname, originally from the name of various Welsh towns meaning "big village", derived from Middle Welsh tref "village" and maur "large".
