Swimmer Boy
Nance Johnston arrived in Maui in the dead of night, their family arriving with a rented van to pick them up from the open-air airport. The day had been long, the flight to Vancouver first and then out to the Hawaiian Islands a long drag they hadn't experienced since they'd retired. But retirement was treating them well, and all the travel led to fun and adventure instead of work and misadventure. Nance had met some interesting individuals while having a drink before the second leg of the flight, and had chatted easily and without worry. Nance was a person of easy disposition, letting the ebb and flow of life drive them in whichever direction it felt fit. This was their mindset since retiring: whatever the universe had prepared them for, set them up for, they were going to face it head on.
Perhaps this disposition came out of necessity, as Nance's previous employment had been incredibly harrowing. They had seen numerous psychologists over the years, and all their problems seemed to come down to letting things go. This was difficult, of course, as they were an ex-Marine and had been impressively trained by the very best to be hypervigilant, adaptable, courageous, and dependable. These things were great for life of Marine, but could be a bit maladaptive for those trying to settle back into civilian life. Hence, the vacation they were taking their family on. Since returning to civilian life they had met a wonderful human being name Sam who easily rolled with the proverbial punches. They had also reconnected with their parents and sibling, whom they had had to keep a distance from due to the nature of their work. Everything was going great, they were all excited to spend some quality time together, and make new positive memories.
The van glided to a stop in front of their hotel for the week. The entrance was brightly lit and warm and an attendant quickly hustled up to the van to open the door and assist with Nance's duffle bag. The duffle bag was one habit they couldn't give up since serving their time, it was the ultimate catch-all from which they lived their life.
"Room 728," Gerard, Nance's father, said. "We'll take the bag if you can call an elevator."
The attendant hung onto the bag anyway and hustled into the hotel. Nance's brother, Colin, and their mother, Chris, and Sam all headed into the lobby while Gerard went to park the van in the overnight lot. The attendant was standing by the elevators, picking the bag up again, when they finally caught up with him.
"Your bag." Said the attendant, handing it over to Nance and hustling off towards the front of the hotel again.
Nance led the way onto the elevator without a glance back.
The next morning Nance and Sam headed down to the beach with cups of coffee in hand. On the menu for the day was kayaking, windsurfing, and the possibility of snorkeling, if the mood struck. They sat out and watched the sun rise over the island. Nance's family eventually joined them on the beach, having lingered over breakfast in the hotel. They all decided that they would embrace the early morning and go windsurfing before the heat of the day swallowed them up and they admitted defeat for cooler activities.
The gusts coming in off the ocean propelled their surfboards gracefully. Sam, a long-time resident of the west coast, found the transition from surfing to windsurfing quite easy and soon was showing off and had them all laughing. Colin proved to be the most land-bound and settled for lowering the mast and sail just to sit on the board and paddle around.
Once the sun was high in the sky and blazing down on them they called it quits and sought out the chill inner sanctum of the hotel. They traded their bathing suits for loose fitting t-shirts and shorts and loaded into the van for a lunch excursion and exploration of the island.
On their third day on Maui, Nance and Sam opted to rent a motorcycle and go exploring the road to Hana on their own. They stopped at every point of interest and went at such an ingratiating pace that Sam's motion sickness never overcame them enough that they had to stop between activities. At some point they pulled over, parked the bike, and wandered into a beautiful sanctuary.
The sanctuary was lush, like much of the island, and included a maze of walkways and lookout points. Nance and Sam were enjoying one of these lookout points when Sam pointed out a forested area and declared, "That looks like an excellent place to get photos!"
They wandered off the designated path and wound their way between the trees. The trunks were tightly packed, the canopy far above. The dull hum of tourists slowly died away as they went deeper, Sam declaring the trees not perfectly uniform enough yet for the photo they wanted. The birds chirped from far overhead. A branch snapped on the carpeted forest floor. The graffiti on the trunks lessened.
"Here!" Sam declared, and turned smiling to Nance. But Nance was gone.

Hawaii is known as the birthplace of modern surfing, and many visitors are drawn to the islands to experience the thrill of riding the waves. Whether you're a beginner looking to catch your first wave or an experienced surfer wanting to improve your skills, there are options available to suit your needs. In this article, we will explore the surfing lessons and experiences commonly included in Hawaiian vacation packages.
Surfing Lessons for Beginners: Vacation packages often include surfing lessons for beginners, catering to individuals or small groups who have little to no experience in surfing. These lessons are typically led by experienced instructors who provide guidance on safety, technique, and etiquette. Beginners will learn the basics of paddling, popping up, and riding the waves, ensuring a safe and enjoyable introduction to the sport. Lessons usually take place in gentle, beginner-friendly surf spots to enhance the learning experience.
Advanced Surfing Lessons: For more experienced surfers looking to take their skills to the next level, advanced surfing lessons are also available. These lessons focus on refining techniques, mastering maneuvers, and improving wave selection and timing. Experienced instructors provide personalized coaching, offering valuable feedback and tips to enhance the participant's surfing abilities. Advanced lessons often take place in more challenging surf breaks, allowing surfers to push their limits and ride more demanding waves.
Surf Camps: Surf camps are another popular option included in vacation packages, particularly for those seeking a more immersive surfing experience. Surf camps typically span several days and offer a comprehensive program that includes daily lessons, practice sessions, and additional activities such as yoga, fitness training, and video analysis. Participants have the opportunity to fully immerse themselves in the surfing culture and progress their skills under the guidance of experienced instructors. Surf camps are suitable for surfers of all levels, and they often provide all the necessary equipment, including surfboards and wetsuits.
Surf Safaris and Guided Tours: Vacation packages may also include surf safaris or guided tours, allowing participants to explore different surf breaks and locations across the islands. These experiences are often led by knowledgeable local surf guides who are familiar with the best spots for different skill levels and wave conditions. Surf safaris and guided tours offer the opportunity to discover hidden gems, chase the best waves of the day, and gain insights into the local surf culture.

July is 4th - Maui- our last full day!
Dan and I woke up around 630 and were contemplating possibly snorkeling vs getting a Hawaiian breakfast involving banana pancakes and coconut syrup- as it is a Hawaiian must! Breakfast won. We had recommendations to go to a breakfast place north of the island called "The Gazebo." As it was, it was just a Small gazebo hut.
We arrived 15 minutes before they opened at 8Am and there was still a very long line awaiting for them to open. We waited over two hours in the line, but once we were in the waitress said their would be barely a wait to receive our food.
Tumblr media
Dan and I both ordered two plates. I figure since we were camping, whatever I couldn't eat I would put in the cooler. I ordered an eggs Benedict and Dan ordered an omelet. Of course we both ordered pancakes on top of it. The waitress warned me that it would be a lot of food and recommended I didn't get both. I still did , especially based on the long line we waited in!
Dan had the Macadamian nut-banana pancakes with white chocolate chips and whip cream topping. I had banana pancakes with whip cream on the side. Here at the Gazebo, the banana were just a few slices just on the side and was not directly in the batter or fried into the pancake like I would expect.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When both orders came I ate only Halfway through both plates before I stuffed beyond belief. Dan ate both his plates, I couldn't believe it!
Afterwards, dan and I had some time to look around the area for possible snorkeling sections. We finished breakfast at 10:15 and had until 1:30 when our surfing lesson began.
Since we were in the northern part of western Hawaii in Kapalua, I figured it would be cool to go down the line for snorkel spots.
We only had time to snorkel one in Kapalua area before it was already to head towards Lahaina. The snorkel still didn't compare to the coral reefs right outside our campsite.
Tumblr media
Dan had rented bikes in hopes we could ride back to Lahaina (7 miles) later in the evening to watch the fireworks later. We walked around the block several times around the addresses area for bike rental. The building was completely fenced off with a locking on every block. There was no way of entry or way to ring a doorbell or knock. I guess our plans shifted to staying in Lahaina the rest of the day into the evening.
It was time for Outrageous Surf school!
Dan had only surfed once with me, when I took h to choppy rough waves of Santa Cruz. He was not a fan at the time and was happy he was willing to give it another try. I think he liked that there was an instructor teaching the basic of basic on a day of np waves (anywhere near Lahaina). It was a roll of the dice to know if we were to come during a time of good waves or not, overall it was pretty flat. Pretty much standing on a small paddle board and almost floating into shore.
There was none in our group of all ages and sizes, all brand new beginners. I actually enjoyed getting a refresher in surfing as I don't do it year round. There's always something we can learn from going back to the basics. I feel that way for most subjects.
They took us on the beach and did a quick lesson of how to stand and corrected everyone's posture. I actually had a hard time doing the beginner version where they were directed to get on their stomach, to both knees, to one knee, to stand. Once you have the instinct to "pop up" it's hard to go backwards.
The water was perfect, even if it was flat. It was a great day for Dan to learn. The unusual part of paddling alone can be exhausting for anyone who hasn't paddled on their stomach before, even for strong gym goers and avid swimmers.
The instructors had everyone in a "safe zone" in the water next to a buoy. The instructors Axil and the other guy (forgot his name already), called us out into the water two at a time and pushed us in with the wave. They directed when to paddle and when to stand. Mostly everyone was able to catch on and stand. It was a great stress free class.
Afterwards, we were able to use the company's hose behind the building to rinse off a quick rinse. Once we realized we were not going back to camp we actually came back around and asked if we could take a second rinse with some soap and shampoo. They were very accommodating and that was our shower for the 4th of July.
We showered in our swimsuits and then moved our car to 24 hour parking. As it was only 4, we had 5 hours to spend loitering around Lahaina. Thankfully, it seemed hopping as people began to flood in.
Once we moved our car, we dressed semi nice and started getting into the wine and cheese and beer. I was sad my pancakes had gotten soggy as the ice melted in our cooler, leaking water into the container.
We walked around the mall, and realized the waiting lines for food were crazy long. We walked off the beaten path along Front sear and at at Paia Fish Market. I had the seafood pasta which was awesome. Dan had a fish burger. We were surved quick, the price was right, and the food was good.
Tumblr media
Dan and I walked around the park where they had Banyan trees. It was an ecosystem of trees that were all connected by branches and routes. A very odd and unusual thing to see, it felt like it was from Harry Potter.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We waited on a bench for a while then migrated back to the car to grab our chairs. We thought there was a parade as a police officer mentioned it. We found a spot that seemed perfect for the road side and boarders a log fence facing the fireworks over the water.
Tumblr media
While I went into the ABC store, the time I was in the line I missed the parade. It was only 3 fancy cars driving by slowly.
We watched the sunset and waited patiently for 8pm. The sunset was beautiful and would not have been viewed over water in Olowalu campground. 8pm came and the first firework launched.
They shot 2 or 3 mortars at a time and it was gorgeous. After 7 minutes, they picked up speed and at 11 minutes- the fireworks were over. It's funny to think we waited six hours for 11 minute fireworks. I wasn't mad but just surprised, as thousands of locals and tourists gathered.
Tumblr media
Once the finale was over dan and I sprinted to the car (or jogged quickly) and were the first ones out of our lot. We were only a 12 minute drive back to camp. Tomorrow we were to head home. It was definitely a quick five days on the island.

3 Winter Vacation Paddleboarding Getaways Around the US
Are you looking for a destination for your next winter paddleboarding adventure? Of course you are! Naturally, there are tons of places to choose from, but there are three locations that are perfect for a winter getaway. These destinations run the gamut from mild to more intense in terms of weather. Or you can choose a warm-weather locale, too (because not everyone is a fan of chilly temps). Here are three destinations around the US where your inflatable paddle board will be right at home this winter.
Tumblr media
Seattle for the Mild Winter There are countless paddleboarding opportunities in and around Seattle, Lake Washington, and the Puget Sound. Start at Discovery Park and Salmon Bay, or head to Gas Works Park and Lake Union. What makes paddleboarding close to Seattle so great? You get to enjoy everything you love about paddleboarding but in a more urban environment. It’s a scenic city with a highly diverse skyline. You’ll never be bored, and every trip will bring new sights to discover. What’s great about heading to Seattle during winter is that you can get out on the water without worrying about extreme winter weather. Seattle is known for rain, but snow and ice tend to be a rarity in the Pacific Northwest climate. This can mean a safer journey. And speaking of safety, because of the urban setting, it can get busy out on the water. In certain areas, you’ll want to keep closer to the shoreline to avoid boat traffic. As long as you stay aware—and make yourself as visible as possible—you’re in for a great time. The Tetons for Something More Extreme If you really want to immerse yourself in a wintry environment, pack up your inflatable SUP board and head to Jackson, Wyoming to bask in the glory of the Tetons. Spend an epic day on Jackson Lake and take in the majestic views of the awe-inspiring mountain range. During the winter months, accessibility can vary, so it’s crucial to plan ahead. Of course, if a wintertime excursion to Jackson Lake seems like more than you’re looking for, you’ll definitely want to set aside time in the summer to experience the lake and Grand Teton National Park. It’s absolutely worth it, both on and off your board. There are tons of hiking opportunities and dozens of lakes and ponds scattered throughout the range. If you’re feeling especially adventurous, take your paddleboard along with you on a hike. It could be tough getting to a remote location, but you’ll be glad you did. Hawaii to Escape the Chill If you want to paddleboard in the dead of winter, but you’re not a fan of the winter temperatures, Hawaii is the place to go. From Maui to the Big Island and everywhere in between, there are countless spots throughout the Hawaiian Islands that make for spectacular inflatable SUP destinations. One great example is Hanalei Bay, located on Kauai. The bay offers idyllic conditions for anyone looking for a leisurely session. At the same time, if you want to try your hand at paddleboard surfing, you can find some gentle waves in the vicinity of the bay. No matter where you go in Hanalei Bay, the views are sure to be spectacular. And if you’ve never considered paddleboarding during the winter, give it a shot. You could be in for one of the most memorable experiences of your life. About iROCKER Ready for adventure? Look no further than iROCKER for the gear you need to excel on the water. 10 Awesome Things to See and Do in Maui, Hawaii
Tumblr media
Ever think about taking a trip to paradise? Maui’s got you covered. Being Hawaii’s second largest island, it has no shortage of interesting and exciting things to do.
Itching to see some truly wonderful natural wonders? Maui’s got it. Have a hankering to try water sports or just relax on some remote beach? You can find them there. Good food? Nice hotels? Beautiful hula-clad girls? Yes, yes and yes.
1. The Old Lahaina Luau
Some things are just unavoidably interwoven with a particular place’s identity. In Maui’s cause, perhaps this is never more apparent than with The Old Lahaina Luau, one of the biggest and most popular venues to view the traditional Hawaiian hula dance, fire-eating shows and sampling some delicious native dishes.
2. Haleakala National Park
Home to the world’s largest dormant volcano, millions of visitors come by to see this majestic sleeping giant. Sitting 10,000 feet above sea level, it is a place where you can wonder about the powers and dangers of Mother Earth—without getting too close to red-hot lava, ala Mt. Kilauea.
Seeing the majestic sunrise from the top of Haleakala (pronounced “hah-lay-ah-kah-lah”) is one of the most favourite things to do here, but that also means dragging yourself out of bed at three in the morning, making a two and a half hour drive up to the summit, and bundling up in every piece of clothing you’ve brought, because although it could be one of the most beautiful sights you would see in your lifetime, the temperature there is frigid and the winds are relentless.
3. Snorkelling and Other Ocean Activities
I don’t think anyone’s ever managed to disassociate Hawaii with the ocean, and there is certainly a surfeit of potential places and tours in Maui.
There are also packages available for snorkeling, surfing, whale watching, cruises, kayaking, outrigger canoeing, scuba diving, fishing, surfing, parasailing, kite-boarding, stand up paddling, windsurfing, and jet skiing. You can experience all those thrills in this island.
The white-sand beaches found all around Maui also offer a truly spectacular opportunity to see the secrets of the depths, from vibrantly-colored fish to ghostly shipwrecks such as the wreck of the Carthaginian. Watch out for sharks, though!
On the flip side, if being in the ocean scares you, there are other ways to appreciate it without actually jumping in it. The Ocean Center in Maui is a conservatory and aquarium all in one, home to a fantastic, teeming variety of fish and other marine life for the curious.
4. Helicopter Tours
If you’re the kind of adventurer going for something different, consider going on a helicopter ride and afford yourself some breathtaking views of not just Maui, but of all Hawaii’s islands. Take a ride to the skies and experience the majestic islands in all their glory.
5. Take the Road to Hana
The Road to Hana is also another favourite tourist activity in Maui. The journey through this winding and steep road begins at Maui’s northern shore and proceeds along the coastline to the small East Maui town, Hana, a peaceful community bordered by abundant green pastures decorated with white-coloured cattle.
Hana is a beautiful destination, but the road to get to it is also a destination. You would not want to rush this road trip and you would definitely make more than a handful of stops to enjoy and take Instagram-worthy pictures of lush greeneries, remarkable waterfalls, and breathe in the fragrant smell of guavas and ginger that grow along the roadside.
6. Play Golf!
Yes, this small Hawaiian island also boasts of impressive golf courses open to the public. Maui offers a great variety of golf experiences for both novice or amateur and professional players. So whether you just play to relax, or you’re a pro-golfer, you will definitely find Maui’s golf courses remarkable and the view spectacular and breathtaking.
7. Take a Bite of Maui’s Gastronomic Paradise
Who doesn’t like to eat? Everybody loves grub and if you are in Maui, you will have even more reasons to love food! Dining is one of the top things to do here and the experience is one for the books. Though the area is just small, Maui unbelievably offers a vast array of dining choices from affordable mom-and-pop cafes to posh and luxurious celebrity-chef owned restaurants.
The locals would advise you to taste a bit of everything in Maui: Hawaiian-style fast food, fine-dining restaurants, local favourites like Spam musubi, or ethnic foods like Portuguese malasadas that represents the island’s culinary identity.
8. Immerse Yourself in Maui’s Rich Culture
Hawaii’s rich and colourful culture is absolutely unique; and there’s nowhere in the world like it. There’s the famous Hula dance and a lot of festivals, art galleries, museums, and special shows that immerse you in the beautiful Hawaiian culture.
Music is also an immense part of Maui’s cultural heritage. You will hear their music everywhere—in your hotel, in the beaches, parks, and even shopping centers.
9. Shop til’ You Drop
Because the island of Maui offers a vast pool of choices to shop in—from large shopping malls with high-end designer brands to tiny hole-in-the-wall boutiques, chances are you are going to end up buying something during your stay. Maui’s largest Swap Meet happens every Saturday from 7am to 1pm at the UH Maui College campus in Kahului. Here, you will meet both visitors and locals roving through the rows of booths. Arts and crafts, clothing, jewelery, souvenirs, flowers, produce, and everything you could think of from some couple of hundreds of vendors.
10. Sightsee
Aside from Road to Hana and Haleakala, Iao Valley is also a notable natural park for photography and hiking. Upcountry Maui (on the slopes of Haleakala) has quaint little towns, wide grazing grounds, and a picturesque landscape. Other towns like Wailuku, Makawao, Paia, and Lahaina, offer local food and are perfect for day or afternoon strolling.

trades & substitutions
I had a long talk with my husband the other night about what it’s been like living in Maui for the past 8 months.  It was a good talk.  One of those talks that makes you breath deep, and relish in accomplishment and happiness that you’ve made good life choices, and the correct lifetime partner.
We talked about our current life in Maui versus our past life in Chicago.  We talked about what we gave up, and what we’ve gained.  It was interesting to lay out all of the things we’ve traded, and all of the substitutions we’ve added to our lives.
We recently had two close friends visit from Chicago, and it stirred up a lot of emotion.  They were our neighbors in Logan Square, and as hard as it was saying goodbye to our condo, it was the most difficult saying goodbye to them. We loved reminiscing about neighbor dinners, walks to local breweries, and endless delicious food.  We talked of missing living so close to each other, seeing each other regularly, and all the comforts that brought.  It was a wonderful trip, and made us feel loved.  It confirmed that real friends last a lifetime, and that even if life changes, friendships can evolve.  It made me happy.
While sitting at Maui Brewing Company enjoying the visit, Yusuf (our Chicago visitor) said “living here, you must really make a commitment to love the outdoors.”  That comment cemented so many of the trades and sacrifices we’ve made to live here in ‘paradise’.  We traded the comforts of living in a big condo, in a big city, to live in a small and old rental next to a beach.  And sometimes that makes me sad. But we substitute months and months of being caged indoors for daily outdoor walks, bike rides, and ocean swims.  We joined a canoe paddling club.  I am on, in, or near the ocean every.single.day.  I’ve taken up new hobbies that I never dreamed of (Stand up paddle boarding, Hawaiian canoe club), and I can do them year round.  As much as I loved that condo, I don’t hate our trade.
I miss entertaining in our open kitchen, but love that we can all meet at ‘mile marker 2′ at the beach and crack open drinks alongside the ocean.
I guess, at the end of the day, I’m just happy.  There have been hard days, tough weeks, and struggles.  But as I sit next to my hubs on the couch, laying it all out on the table, I feel so fortunate we took this giant leap-- and as our old . neighbors, and forever friends <Drea & Yusuf> would say “cheers!”
So, off to another Maui day.
