Contagion
Contagion [trailer]
Healthcare professionals, government officials and everyday people find themselves in the midst of a worldwide epidemic as the CDC works to find a cure.
It's a bit morbid to watch the movie again right now. But at the same time it feels like the right thing to do and it's hard to resist.
The fictive case portrayed is more serious than what is happening right now around the world. But that can easily be attibuted to "dramatic purposes". It feels frighteningly real.
Jude Law's character sadly seems more real than ever. With the difference that these days, instead of going to jail, he would probably be offered a cabinet position in the current US regime.
Social distancing is urgent. Flatten the curve. Please read this and share!
Wash your hands thoroughly - keep your distance from people who cough and sneeze - avoid large crowds - do not touch your face - care for the elderly.

What is Postmodernism?
Postmodernism is a school of thought that is the general antithesis of modernism. It calls out the weaknesses in the typical bravado of modernism, reflecting the marginalized subcultures views of typical modernist thought. Where there is freedom in modernism, there is oppression in postmodernism; where there is unity, there is exile. The thought process behind postmodernism can lead to pessimism, even despair, at the stark social injustices in a modernistic world. Postmodern artworks reflect this train of thought by moving from seemingly hopeful artifacts to abstract, thought evoking pieces. Art throughout history has brandished bold, clear messages and subtle pieces read through nuance, but postmodernism uses art as a tool to speak for the underdog, often against a higher power or well known societal “fact.” Postmodernists aim to make art more accessible, shunning traditional museums and their confines of what it means to be “high” art or “low” art. While modernism aims to create something specific, new, easily described and well understood, postmodern art lives to be collaborative and contextual. Postmodern art is intent upon being attainable, uncomfortable and demanding of the viewer.
1. Escaping the confines of museums
It Is Guns, 2018, Jenny Holzer, LED Sign Mounted on Lorrie.
Public art with a strong message pertaining to the struggles with gun control.
2. Collapsing boundaries between "high" and "low"
Quest for Cholesterol, Robert Williams, 1987, Oil on canvas.
“High” art technique, materials, and skill with “lowbrow” content.
3. Rejecting originality
Untitled Film Still #21, Cindy Sherman, 1978. Gelatin silver print.
Looks as though it could be from any other time period before it; black and white composition create ageless feel we all have seen before.
4. Jouissance
Adult Female Sexual Organs, 2005, Wangechi Mutu, packing tape, fur, collage on medical illustration paper.
Celebrates art and the creator’s idea of the female.
5. Working collaboratively
Performance of Six Public Acts, 1978, Judith Malina (and others).
Live performance with an abundance of players and onlookers.
6. Appropriating
Fountain (Madonna), 1991, Sherrie Levine, Cast Bronze.
Much like the Marcel DuChamp Fountainin the book, gilded and named the feminine name Madonna.
7. Simulating
Pregnant Woman in the Pool (also known as Untitled)
, 1999, Gregory Crewdson, Chromogenic print.
Each piece was created separately and combined for a uniform piece.
8. Hybridizing
Untitled, 2011, Ludo, Spray paint on wood.
Urban spraypainting mixed with vivid organic content and the Freddy mask combines many thought processes and art processes.
9. Mixing media
Crystallised Menagerie, 2009, Kate Rohde, Mixed media.
Highly stylized and colored piece created with a variety of media.
10. Layering
Post Modern Collage, 2011,Gabby Frank, Mixed media collage.
One artist’s personal collection of thoughts on what postmodernism is, combined into an eye catching collage.
11. Mixing codes
Affirmative Fears Affirmative Tears (Forever Free), 1997, Michael Ray Charles, Acrylic latex, stain and copper penny on paper.
Watermelon, savage-looking, racist black-face individual with an empty head on top of a skull-and-crossbones, along with dramatic text, mix modern understanding with old-world opinions to create a strong piece.
12. Re-contextualizing
Allegory,(unknown date), David Derr, Doll, acrylic paint, metal and wood.
An old doll gets recreated as a cherub, nailed to wood and bound by chains in a new statement of love and its confines.
13. Confronting the gaze
Flashburn, 2017, Leah Schrager, Digital c-print on aluminum.
The artist intentionally sexualizes the subject but covers the genitalia in a bold statement.
14. Facing the abject
Born, 2002, Kiki Smith, Bronze.
A deer births a nude woman, causing the viewer to abruptly think of the female anatomy and its creation of life.
15. Constructing Identities
What the Water Gave Me, 1938, Oil on canvas.
Frida Kahlo expresses her past and shows what made her tick in an intimate bathtub scene.
16. Using narratives
Fun, 2014, McCann, Portugal for SIC Radical, Print.
Advertising agency creates humorous take on safe sex.
17. Creating metaphors
Family Resemblance: Husband and Son,
Family Resemblance: Husband and Son, 2006, Nina Levy, Polyester resin, steel, oil paint.
Father’s head replaced by son in an effort to construct family resemblance.
18. Irony, parody, and dissonance
The Perfect Cartwheel, 2019, Matt Verginer, Limewood.
A plump woman gracefully balances on top of a hippo attempting to eat her, juxtaposing weight, hunger, and balance.

Some of my dailies this week featuring the #dailyplanbar by Mike Rohde. I recently did my dailies like this especially when I have a mix of things to do in a day. It seems to work by making my day systematic.
And haven’t I mentioned that I am so in love with my passport size Midori TN? I just can’t stop touching the leather and the smell is addicting! My husband got me a regular black and it has a different texture to it. It is matte, soft and fuzzy as compared to my passport size which is shiny and smooth. Different characteristics and I love them both! I am excited to set up the regular size for 2018!

Vase/bowl, Wilhelm Kåge, c. 1940, Minneapolis Institute of Art: Decorative Arts, Textiles and Sculpture
Matte white glaze with craqueler surface; Bowl with attached stepped vase; made for 'Surrea' series Wilhelm Kåge began his career as a painter, receiving his initial training at the Valand Art School in Gothenburg and later studying under Johan Rohde in Copenhagen. As Gustavsberg's earliest modern designer (and artistic director from 1917-49) he produced a number of witty and elegant designs arising from his familiarity with the modern movements in painting and sculpture. In this work he has made a sly reference to Cubism, slicing the vase form in half and combining a vase and bowl into one unit as it might appear in a Picasso still life. The Surrea series included a wide range of cut and reassembled vases and bowls, some partly colored, some left undecorated. Kåge's lively imagination brought forth an astonishing variety of forms. The angularity of several geometric vessels in the Surrea series contrasts strikingly with the "soft forms" of organically shaped tableware produced during the same period. A porcelain vase with silver inlany from another one of his lines, the Argenta series, is also on display in this exhibition. Size: 13 x 7 1/4 in. (33.02 x 18.42 cm) Medium: Ceramic with craqueler surface

3 Reasons Scientists Endure Social Media Trolls And Attacks
New Post has been published on https://perfectirishgifts.com/3-reasons-scientists-endure-social-media-trolls-and-attacks/
3 Reasons Scientists Endure Social Media Trolls And Attacks
Social media is an interesting place. It can be a repository of amazing information and access. At the same time, it can be a cesspool of mean-spiritedness and misinformation. It can be a place for credible experts to connect with others beyond ivory towers as well as place for someone to gain an audience whether they deserve one or not. My wife pondered recently how I so effortlessly ignore trolls or personal attacks when she is ready to pounce (That’s one of the reasons I love her). The simple answer is that by acknowledging foolishness you legitimize it. However, the conversation triggered a deeper question. Why do respected, published, and admired scientists endure trolling and attacks from faceless personas behind keyboards? I offer three reasons based on my own experiences.
MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA – APRIL 05: Social media texts from trolls are seen on the demons banner during … [] the round three AFL match between the Melbourne Demons and the Essendon Bombers at Melbourne Cricket Ground on April 05, 2019 in Melbourne, Australia. (Photo by Michael Dodge/Getty Images)
While not able to speak on behalf of all scientists, I can offer some perspective. As a meteorologist and climate scientist who is active on social media, I certainly receive my share of trolling. People will attack my perspectives on climate science, my race, intelligence, and so forth. It doesn’t bother me at all, and I am often even amused by it. However, there are scholars that avoid social media because they cannot stomach the trolling or fear the intimidation. It’s worth it though.
One reason we endure the “hot mess” that can be social media is because it is an effective medium for exposing the broader public, media, and policymakers to real science. The vast majority of people are not cracking open scientific journals or conference proceedings on a regular basis, but they are on Twitter and Facebook. It is imperative that scientists engage in these spaces because if credible expertise is not in the fray, then pseudo-expertise and bad actors with agendas will gladly fill the voids that we leave behind. MedicalBrief columnist Alastair McAlpine understood this. According to McAlpine’s Law, pseudoscience will always try to fill vacuums in scientific knowledge.
A 2013 study by Isabelle M. Côtéimcote of Simon Fraser University and Emily S. Darling of the University of Toronto found that when a scientist had greater than 1000 followers they exponentially increased their ability to share credible scientific information. Dr. Robert Rohde is lead scientist at Berkeley Earth. Rohde has done an outstanding job recently analyzing the social media reach and efficacy of climate scientists. He recently tweet stormed Professor Katharine Hayhoe’s Twitter list of climate scientists, the most followed climate scientists, and some outstanding experts that may be flying under the radar.
WASHINGTON, DC – JUNE 10: Atmospheric scientist and christian, Katharine Hayhoe poses for a portrait … [] after speaking during the Citizen’s Climate Lobby conference at the Omni Shoreham on Monday June 10, 2019 in Washington, DC. (Photo by Matt McClain/The Washington Post via Getty Images)
Beyond serving as an antidote to the “Dunning-Kruger Effect run amuck” and coordinated misinformation campaigns, another reason scientists likely endure the trolling is passion. We are passionate about what we do. I have been in awe of hurricanes, thunderstorms, and so forth since 6th grade and have spent a career trying to understand how our Earth system works. This establishes a benchmark and a protective shield that trolls may not understand. For them, it may be about agendas, political motive, or the goal to disoriented or annoy. For many scientists, the opportunity to share, talk about or do science is golden. It’s organic. I usually can recognize ulterior motives and steer clear of them.
The final reason some scientists may endure the discomfort of the occasional social media irritant is what I call the “Boiled Peanut Incentive.” I grew up in the South and love boiled peanuts. If you are not from here, you might be saying, “What are those?” They are amazing and are staple of country roads and college football games around here. Anyhow, they can be a bit messy and cumbersome to get into, but once you are past the shell, the moist, slightly salty nut is soooo worth the effort. I guess this feeling probably applies to crab lovers too. Scientists who study climate change or COVID-19 have objectives and goals that extend far beyond triviality of Twitter bickering. Our work is for a greater good – advancement of knowledge, the betterment of society, and the future of our kids. We are able to endure a few Internet shells to get to our ultimate prize.
I hope this captures what some of my colleagues feel also. Finally, as I reflect on my life, upbringing, challenges, and circumstances, there are some other things that I have come to realize with age and experience. When I consider my journey, the “sticks and stones may break my bones but names will never hurt me” rule kicks in and I just brush the silly stuff right off my shoulders.” I have endured and overcome far more significant challenges.

3 Reasons Scientists Endure Social Media Trolls And Attacks

3 Reasons Scientists Endure Social Media Trolls And Attacks
Social media is an interesting place. It can be a repository of amazing information and access. At the same time, it can be a cesspool of mean-spiritedness and misinformation. It can be place for credible experts to connect with others beyond ivory towers as well as place for someone to gain an audience whether they deserve one or not.

MORE FOR YOU
Beyond serving as an antidote to the “Dunning-Kruger Effect run amuck” and coordinated misinformation campaigns, another reason scientists likely endure the trolling is passion.

30/03 - The Hu en Niceto Club
