Amazon Sets ‘The Lord of the Rings’ TV Series In Mega Deal With Multi-Season Commitment
In its quest to launch a hit fantasy series of the Game of Thrones caliber, Amazon has closed a massive deal — said to be close to $250 million — to acquire global TV rights to The Lord of the Rings, based on the fantasy novels by J.R.R. Tolkien. The streaming service has given a multi-season commitment to a LOTR series in the pact, which also includes a potential spinoff series.
The LOTR original series, a prequel to Tolkien’s The Fellowship of the Ring, will be produced by Amazon Studios in cooperation with the Tolkien Estate and Trust; HarperCollins; and New Line Cinema, a division of Warner Bros. Entertainment, which produced the hugely successful LOTR movie franchise.
No details about the deal were disclosed, but it believed to be dwarfing any TV series pact to date with a whopping price tag attached.
Amazon, Netflix and HBO had been approached by the Tolkien estate, who had been shopping the project. It came with an upfront rights payment said to be in the $200 million-$250 million range. That is just for the rights, before any costs for development, talent and production, in proposition whose finances industry observers called “insane.” It is a payment that is made sight unseen as there is no concept, and there are no creative auspices attached to the possible series. On top of that, the budget for a fantasy series of that magnitude is likely to be $100 million-$150 million a season.
“The Lord of the Rings is a cultural phenomenon that has captured the imagination of generations of fans through literature and the big screen,” said Sharon Tal Yguado, Head of Scripted Series at Amazon Studios. “We are honored to be working with the Tolkien Estate and Trust, HarperCollins and New Line on this exciting collaboration for television and are thrilled to be taking The Lord of the Rings fans on a new epic journey in Middle Earth.”
Set in Middle Earth, the television adaptation will explore new storylines preceding Tolkien’s The Fellowship of the Ring.
“We are delighted that Amazon, with its longstanding commitment to literature, is the home of the first-ever multi-season television series for The Lord of the Rings,” said Matt Galsor, a representative for the Tolkien Estate and Trust and HarperCollins. “Sharon and the team at Amazon Studios have exceptional ideas to bring to the screen previously unexplored stories based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s original writings.”
Given Amazon’s mandate to launch a big fantasy series of the scope of Game of Thrones, which comes directly from honcho Jeff Bezos and Amazon’s deep coffers, the company was considered the leading contender for a Lord of the Rings series. Bezos has been hands-on involved in the matters of entertainment division Amazon Studios following the purge of its top executives, led by Roy Price, and has been taking meetings and making calls to agents.
The Lord of the Rings deal eclipses some big-ticket series commitments Amazon has made during the past couple of years: $80 million for the six-episode Woody Allen show Crisis in Six Scenes, $70 million-plus for Matt Weiner’s eight-episode The Romanoffs and $160 million for two seasons of David O. Russell’s series, which now has been axed after about $40 million spent. (The last two series originally came from The Weinstein Co., which no longer has involvement in The Romanoffs)
The Tolkien estate and publisher HarperCollins filed the massive lawsuit in November 2012 against Warner Bros., its subsidiary New Line and Middle-earth Enterprises — a division of Rings’ Hobbit rightsholder the Saul Zaentz Co. — claiming copyright infringement and breach of contract over video games, online slot machines and other digital merchandising.
With the $80 million lawsuit settled in July, the two sides have gotten on better terms following the bitter feud. The Tolkien estate shopped the TV series on its own, with Warner Bros.’ blessing. Warner Bros. TV, which would’ve been a logical partner, is not a studio on the LOTR series, which will be produced by Amazon Studios.
A LOTR TV series will provide corporate synergy for Amazon, the world’s leading book seller. The Lord of the Rings novels was named Amazon customers’ favorite book of the millennium in 1999. Still, that world already has been extensively explored on-screen with three great Lord of the Rings movies and three Hobbit films.

So you know how everyone panicked over Amazon remaking The Lord of the Rings as a TV series?
Well, there’s been an update! From Deadline:

Tolkien’s original writings.”
I’m excited, folks! Instead of a re-make that would likely pale in comparison to Peter Jackson’s epic homage, we will hopefully be getting brand new content that expands upon Tolkien’s universe that we all know and love! I for one am extremely optimistic about seeing Middle-earth be further explored with fresh direction, fresh stories, and hopefully boundless enthusiasm!

This is bad, bad, bad. I’ve been vocal before about how the three properties I’d most love to see adapted as television series would be “Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell”, the “Red Rising” trilogy, and “The Silmarillion.” JS&MN actually happened, to my utter shock, and I largely enjoyed the adaptation. And now this announcement comes, so you’d think I’d be happy! HOWEVER. To the best of my knowledge, New Line only had the rights to use whatever materials are contained within The Hobbit, and LotR and its Appendices. So this smacks of an attempt to adapt, say, the Tale of Beren and Luthien but only sticking to whatever Aragorn told the Hobbits about it at Weather-top and the few extra appendices details but then doing whatever the hell they want to with the rest of it (no Finrod, no Celegorm and Curufin … Could they even use Morgoth?? I’d have to check). Or maybe the story of Celebrimbor hella embellished and without any reference to the Feanorians and his whole, you know, place in that family legacy. Regardless it sounds like they’re just trying to keep the rights and that’s the only reason they’re trying to adapt “previously unexplored stories based on Tolkien’s writings” (based on?? Based on???? Yeah, that’s a bad sign, they’re already in this announcement trying to give themselves an out for wildly inaccurate adaptation-work); they don’t have enough canon material to adapt these stories properly but that just gives them license to do whatever they like with the material they DO own.
… Now, I might be totally wrong and this will turn out to be a wonderful thing, and I will gladly eat my hat if that happens. I do have to investigate just how involved the Tolkien Estate itself is. Maybe the Estate has somehow magically given Amazon free rein over all of HoME and the Silm and it’ll be wonderful! But right now I’m betting 100% that it won’t.

‘Lord of the Rings’ fantasy books to become television series courtesy of Amazon

“The Lord of the Rings,” the celebrated fantasy book series by J.R.R. Tolkien that became a worldwide film phenomenon is now headed to the small screen, as Amazon announced Monday that it has acquired the rights for a multi-season adaptation on Prime Video.
Set in Middle Earth, the adaptation produced by Amazon Studios will explore new storylines preceding Tolkien’s “The Fellowship of the Ring.” The deal includes a potential additional spin-off series.
“’The Lord of the Rings’ is a cultural phenomenon that has captured the imagination of generations of fans through literature and the big screen,” Sharon Tal Yguado, head of Scripted Series for Amazon Studios, said in a statement. “We are honored to be working with the Tolkien Estate and Trust, HarperCollins and New Line on this exciting collaboration for television and are thrilled to be taking ‘The Lord of the Rings’ fans on a new epic journey in Middle Earth.”
Tolkien’s book series was named Amazon customers’ favorite book of the millennium in 1999. Director Peter Jackson’s theatrical adaptations included “The Fellowship of the Ring” (2001); “The Two Towers” (2002); and “The Return of the King” (2003). The films grossed nearly $6 billion worldwide and won a combined 17 Academy Awards, including Best Picture for “King.”

10 things you need to know today: November 14, 2017 1. A fifth woman came forward on Monday to accuse Roy Moore, the Republican Senate candidate in Alabama, of sexually assaulting her when she was a teenager and he was a prosecutor in his 30s. The new accuser, Beverly Young Nelson, said in a news conference that Moore was a regular at the restaurant where she worked at age 16, and that one night he offered her a ride home. She said Moore parked the car and groped her as she fought, and squeezed her neck "attempting to force my head onto his crotch." Moore called the allegation false and part of a partisan "witch hunt." The New Yorker reported that Moore was once banned from an Alabama mall for allegedly bothering teenage girls. 2. Attorney General Jeff Sessions is considering appointing a second special counsel after Republican lawmakers expressed concerns that Special Counsel Robert Mueller might not have a broad enough mandate to look into such issues as alleged wrongdoing by the Clinton Foundation and the actions of former Attorney General Loretta Lynch, according to a letter obtained by The Washington Post . House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.) has called for a second special counsel to investigate Democrats' actions during last year's election campaign. Brian Fallon, who was press secretary for Hillary Clinton's campaign, called the news part of a Trump administration "fog machine to distract from the Mueller probe" into Russian election meddling and possible collusion by Trump associates. 3. A federal appeals court ruled Monday that part of President Trump's latest travel ban can take effect . A three-judge panel of the San Francisco-based 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said the government can bar U.S. entry by people from Iran, Libya, Syria, Yemen, Somalia, and Chad if they have no connections here. Only people from the six majority-Muslim nations with family, "formal, documented" relations with universities, or resettlement agencies will be allowed in under the ban, which Trump announced on Sept. 24 to replace two earlier versions that had been largely blocked by courts. The state of Hawaii sued to block the restrictions involving these six countries, although it did not challenge the ban's limits on travel from North Korea and Venezuela. 4. The jury in Sen. Robert Menendez's (D-N.J.) bribery trial on Monday told the judge it was deadlocked. "We cannot reach a unanimous decision on any of the charges," the jury wrote. Judge William Walls instructed the jury to try again on Tuesday. The deadlock came on the first day of deliberations since the excusal of a female juror for a previously planned vacation. That juror had predicted that the jury would be hopelessly divided, and she said she would have voted to acquit Menendez on all charges. Menendez is accused of accepting luxury gifts, travel, and campaign donations from Florida eye doctor Salomon Melgen in exchange for favors on government matters. 5. President Trump announced Monday his nomination of Alex Azar to replace Tom Price as the head of the Department of Health and Human Services. "He will be a star for better healthcare and lower drug prices!" Trump tweeted. Azar formerly worked in the department under President George W. Bush. In 2007, he joined the pharmaceutical giant Eli Lilly and Company, eventually rising to head of U.S. operations in 2012. Azar, who backed Jeb Bush in the 2016 election and later donated to the Trump Victory fund, is an outspoken critic of ObamaCare and soaring drug costs. If confirmed, he will replace Price, who resigned in September following reports of expensive taxpayer-funded travel. 6. The Senate's tax-cut proposal, billed as tax relief for the middle class, would raise taxes on 13.8 million moderate-income American families, according to an analysis released Monday by Congress' nonpartisan Joint Committee on Taxation. House and Senate Republicans are trying to work out internal differences to pass their versions of the bill so President Trump will be able to sign it before the end of the year. Trump tweeted on Monday that lawmakers should approve a steeper tax cut for the wealthy, and end ObamaCare's "unfair highly unpopular individual mandate" for all Americans to buy health insurance. 7. WikiLeaks' official Twitter account repeatedly messaged Donald Trump Jr. with political tips and advice , The Atlantic reported. Trump Jr. sometimes responded, although the correspondence was mostly one-sided as WikiLeaks actively sought Trump Jr.'s cooperation. He stopped replying to the messages in October 2016. Weeks before the election, WikiLeaks, which U.S. intelligence officials believe Russia chose to disseminate information it had hacked, suggested that the Trump campaign send them now-President Trump's tax returns to "improve the perception of our impartiality." Early on election day, WikiLeaks told Trump Jr. if his father lost, he should refuse to concede the election and instead challenge the media and "other types of rigging that occurred." 8. Nearly half of all Americans are now considered to have high blood pressure under new guidelines released Monday by the American Heart Association, the American College of Cardiology, and nine other health professional organizations. The guidelines say doctors should treat high blood pressure at 130/80 rather than 140/90. Physicians and patients are "going to be a little bit shocked or taken aback by a diagnosis of Stage 1 hypertension with a blood pressure of 130/80, which historically has been considered a normal, well-controlled blood pressure," said Dr. William White, a professor in the cardiology center at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine. Under the old guidelines, about a third of Americans were diagnosed with the condition. 9. Another woman has accused former President George H.W. Bush of groping her buttocks while they were posing for a photo — this time when the accuser was just 16 years old, Time magazine reported Monday. The woman, Roslyn Corrigan, said that in 2003 she had her picture taken with the 41st president at an event in the CIA's Woodlands, Texas office. Her father was an intelligence officer. She said that while the picture of her, Bush, and her mother was being taken, the former president lowered his hand to her rear and squeezed. "My initial reaction was absolute horror. I was really, really confused," Corrigan said. A spokesman for Bush, Jim McGrath, repeated Bush's apology to "anyone he may have offended during a photo op." 10. Amazon has acquired "multi-season" TV rights for the Lord of the Rings series, Deadline reported Monday. J.R.R. Tolkien's high fantasy trilogy was most famously adapted between 2001 and 2003 by director Peter Jackson, with the final film, The Return of the King , winning Best Picture. "We are delighted that Amazon, with its longstanding commitment to literature, is the home of the first-ever multi-season television series for The Lord of the Rings ," said Tolkien Estate and Trust representative Matt Galsor. While the series will be set in Middle Earth, it will have new storylines preceding the first book in Tolkien's trilogy, according to Deadline . November 14, 2017 at 02:07PM

Amazon will run a multi-season Lord of the Rings prequel TV series
Enlarge / These two wander around for a long time. (credit: New Line Cinema)
Amazon has acquired the global television rights to The Lord of the Rings, and the Internet giant has already committed to a multi-season TV series rooted in author J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-earth setting.
Both Amazon's own press release title ("Amazon to Adapt J.R.R. Tolkien's Globally Renowned Fantasy Novels... ") and earlier rumors suggested that the series would be a direct adaptation of the books, but that is now confirmed not to be the case. Rather, the series will introduce new stories that are set before The Fellowship of the Ring, the first book in the trilogy.
Tolkien estate and HarperCollins representative Matt Galsor said the series will "bring to the screen previously unexplored stories based on J.R.R. Tolkien's original writings." To Tolkien fans, it's unclear what that means exactly. Will characters and situations be based on unpublished Tolkien works? Many of those exist, but the author's son Christopher Tolkien has been editing and completing key works in those categories as published books for several years now. It's unclear what remains.

Tolkien”.

Έπεσαν οι υπογραφές! Και επίσημα έρχεται σειρά Lord Of The Rings
