I read the BBC news stream regularly because I trust it and it has a global outlook. In Canada the CBC does OK, but they are not quite as good. They have too many people to please.

Recently (April 2023) I watched a quick BBC video thing about a "theory" that posits we are living in a Matrix-like simulation. By that we must all be simulations. This is Promoted by a Dr Nick Bostrom who has taught at Yale and Oxford and such places.

OK, this is utter bullshit. For this to be true it would require that some civilizations computational science (not ours) had fully understood and modeled with equations in total detail every component (to the molecular level) of every person and animal and insect and fish and rock and drop of water in the sea and on and on. His idea is that at some point this will happen.

Since it WILL happen in his universe it probably has happened and many times over so there are many many such simulated worlds out there and since there are so many the probability of YOU being in a real one is rather small. That hurts my head it is so stupid.

His PhD is in philosophy and he should really know how to construct arguments better. Thing is if there is one step in a logical argument that can be disproved then the whole thing collapses. He is lucky in that almost every step of his argument is so shaky it falls apart immediately upon examination. Lucky as people are intimidated by his CV and wont raise the objection. Lucky that media like to hit out with click bait, which this is.

I got lots of objections and recall that it takes only one true objection to pull the legs of the thesis out from under it.

First Objection is the idea that computational power is regularly increasing without limit. It has not done so for about 10 years. Moore's Law stopped being valid about 15 years ago. There have been modest increases in processor speed on the order of 50% more but it is hitting several limits. Current "supercomputers" are just built with large arrays of many rather pedestrian processors not faster ones. My 8 year old laptop is exactly as fast today as the top "gaming" units currently for sale. So that computational power is increasing without limit is False.

Full disclosure Solid State drives which are huge arrays of memory chips have sped up computers quite a bit. That is due to the fall in cost of EEPROM type memory. Storage media is getting bigger, but not the processor speed, that is not increasing.

Second objection is that some ultimate programmers have FULLY understood and modeled everything down to molecular detail. That means it is fully and completely understood. Also that accurate mathematical equations to mimic those things have been developed. Think about the implications of that. Those computational GODs are all knowing. There is nothing left to learn. That leads to the simple problem of why build a simulation of our world as it is with wars and crazy Americans shooting children to exercise their rights. How about a nice place? If this is a programed simulation choices were made. Bad choices.

Third objection is the "many worlds" problem his argument depends on there being many such simulations so that it is where the likelihood comes from. If there are not many worlds then that argument fails. I say it fails. No evidence or true arguments at all for such a meta-reality.

Fourth Objection. How big is this computer system running the simulation? The most powerful AIs run on BIG computers and computer arrays. They are not that smart, but have vast knowledge put into them by many real people. If you take the weight of all those people the machine weighs roughly as much, but is not as smart as that group of people together. So does a computer that could simulate the entire universe weigh as much as the universe or even a significant part of it? Most of the universe is Dark Matter and Hydrogen not the heavy metals and stuff to build computers. Those are minuscule fractions of the total. Basically there is not enough stuff to build a computer system that big. If you extrapolate to many worlds type simulation it takes even more of what does not exist.

As I said it takes only one correct objection to kill the thesis. I have four, I could go on.

Two more things. Occam's Razor is a conceptual tool that basically says if there are several options to describe a phenomena the most likely is the simplest, not the most complex. Dr Bostrom's is transcendentally complex. But it does get him interviews and book sales.

At some point, a thing my brain was doing was rewriting the episode of tfp where they go in Megatron's helm

Instead of the war torn area we see in canon, we see what appears to be pre-war Cybertron. Megs is in his Megatronus frame, blue optics and all. (Iicr, the kids back at base would see all of this) In this timeline, we see a much softer want of Megatron: he just wanted to go back in time and be with Orion again. Since he didn't know it was a dream and it was all subconscious... Bumblebee's presence would shatter the veil of denial, that the war was real. Call it a Matrix moment, but in a way yeah Megatron would be forced to choose between a metaphoric red pill or blue pill. Either save the real Optimus, and go back to fighting, or stay in this carefully crafted fantasy with Orion. Logically speaking though in this scenario his servo would be forced to help Bumblebee and save Optimus from the rust plague, because no matter what... the facade was broken. Megatron now knows that it's all a dream, that none of it is real.

I just think it would be neat, idc if it's ooc. I like the idea of showing the humans that yeah Megatronus was once a bright opticed kid in one point in time.

None of This is Real

Hello,

I hate to even start this page off like this but it must be said "none of this bullshit is real". Yes, none it! I find myself questioning my sanity everyday, based on the amount of fuckery I see on the daily. If the collective just comes together to agree that none of this is real, then maybe we can shift to another timeline. Only one can dream of that happening. I guess I could pretend that everything is ok an d crawl back in my hole, but FUCK THAT! Its time my voice is heard.

the interestesting thing about the matrix, as presented in the famous 1999 film "the matrix", is that is actually not that bad for one specific reason. the people there are real.

its telling that in the movie neo is not given close friends or family or a partner or any meaningful kind of human conection, it helps to sell the world as distant and fake and inhuman.

but the thing is that any relation you form inside the matrix... is actually a real human conection. like say you are in the matrix and you start dating this really cute, cool person who likes to play boardgames and s a fan of romantic comedies and is studying to become and architect. that is a real human who is somewhere in the rows of human cultivated fields connected to a bunch of tubes floating in goo. but when they are talking to you in the matrix they are actually talking to you. the things they say actually mean something, the love you feel for each other is real.

like, thanks morpheus, your fight for Zion is cool and all but i have a daughter, i have my best friend with whom i went to college. and morpheus might say something about how the college was fake and it never existed but the moments i had with my friend were real!

the real problem with the simulation machine is solipsism. in a premise where you ARE actually the only mind that exists and everything else was a simulation then, well, that is a lot more scary (would it? if all your friends were AIs would that mean they were not real? food for thought), but my point is that is not the premise of that movie.

i would really like a story where someone is woken up from the matrix and they are resolute to find their partner somewhere on the fields of bodies maybe to wake them up too. or maybe the partner convinces them to go back into the matrix, i dont know. there is a lot of place for drama there.

the last matrix movie sort of touches on that but i feel it doesnt really count because it does it with neo and trinity who both got to know each other outside the matrix and also they were both forcibly put back and whatever

After forcibly removing you from The Matrix, Neo’s hope that you would eventually learn to accept your new life in the real world never comes to fruition. So he has to try alternative measures.

His idea comes from the training programs but he tries something a bit more ambitious, he’s The One so he can practically do whatever he wants. He creates a whole simulated suburban town, designed like the 1950s and he keeps you plugged into it. Your mind is wiped of everything that came before and all you know is this simulation, you believe it to be the real world, you believe Neo is your husband and you’re happily married but you keep having such vivid dreams, where you live a completely different life (the life you had in the matrix) in a completely different world that is far more advanced and you have a successful career, you tell Neo about these dreams every morning before he “leaves for work” (unplugs from the simulation) and he acts amused telling you how absurd they sound.

One day you’re running errands when you see Neo’s car parked outside a motel. You watch him enter one of the rooms and your mind thinks the worst, that he is having an affair. Determined to confront him you storm over to the motel and barge into the room you saw him disappear into, prepared to find him with another woman only to be greeted by an empty room. Your feet quickly rush to the bathroom but that’s empty too. Feeling confused you come back to the room and notice the phone hanging off the hook and carefully put it back while your mind races wondering if you were imagining things. You startle when the shrill sound of the phone ringing echos through the room, making your heart leap out your chest. You quickly answer it and everything goes dark.

When you wake up, you’re in an unfamiliar dark room, you can feel the cold air against your skin as your blurry eyes try to look at your surroundings. It’s hard, your eyes hurt, you’re unaware of how long it’s been since you last used them. You look down, realising you’re strapped down to what looks like a dentist chair, you panic and start crying out for help. You notice all these strange ports on your skin with wires attached, you feel like you’re in a nightmare. Then Neo comes running into the room, realising you managed to escape the simulation. He soothes you, telling you this is just a dream as he plugs you back in.

Once you’re back inside the simulation, you wake up confused, the ‘nightmare’ still fresh in your mind and Neo is there ready to feed you some lie. You fainted in front of a motel he tells you but your memory tells you otherwise, you feel confused, wondering where the nightmare started and reality ended.

The next day while Neo is “at work” you revisit the motel room, it looks just like it did in your “dream” and the phone is sat on the beside table. You sit on the bed and hesitantly lift the phone off the hook and put it to your ear after taking a deep breath. Nothing happens. All you hear is the dial tone. With a sigh you put the phone back down and shake your head, convinced it was all just a dream you return home and your life with Neo continues as normal for a while again…

the matrix theory is the idea that we live in a simulation and the real world is not actually “real”. if you’ve ever seen the matrix movies it will likely make more sense. there’s a lot to this theory, but i’ll explain some of the basics:

• the idea is the world is like a computer program and we are avatars in it who have a set of rules to abide by. those who go against these rules will be punished by the matrix and those who abide will have it easier. it’s unknown who runs it. some believe it’s a higher power, and others believe it’s run by something too complicated for our brains to understand

• just like in the movie this theory implies that we’re only able to view the mainstream world until we awaken and then we’re able to see a “hidden world” that most people are too asleep to see

• most people are programmed by the matrix to NOT believe in it. that’s what the entire theory is about. few are real souls. most are npc’s (non player characters) that will never understand this world and its complexities

• some spiritualists believe that astrology and numerology are the cheat codes to this matrix and can be used as hacks to advance further in many different ways. there are also other kinds of hacks you can use but these are the main cheat codes

• this is actually a theory that’s been around for a very long time and one the aztecs believed but not in the same way people do now. they believed we were in a book

• this theory implies that there is no “coincidences” and that every move we make ends up occurring for a specific reason. however, when it comes to the actions of others hurting us without any reason that is not something we can control and the matrix will strike back at them for not abiding by the rules and send them karma

• to believe in the matrix doesn’t have to mean you don’t believe in God. some believe God runs the matrix

• certain people have it easier or harder in the matrix than others. astrology and numerology can show this. example: if you’re a 33 life path life is going to be hard for you because that’s the last reincarnation you have to go through making it like the “boss” level of the matrix

• the biggest proof of us living in a matrix is all the technological advancements in our world. if we already have vr and realistic simulations made then eventually one day we should be able to make hyper realistic ones which implies there’s a 50-50 chance we ourselves live in one that’s similar if it’s possible it can be made in our reality

• to understand our world and to free your mind you need to go outside of the matrix which is defined as the spiritual realm. the matrix will keep your mind imprisoned. most people do not understand that we are living in a world of illusion. albert einstein even believed this according to his famous quotes: “reality is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one.”, “the distinction between past, present and future is only a stubbornly persistent illusion”, “time is basically an illusion created by the mind to aid in our sense of temporal presence in the vast ocean of space”, etc
