the interestesting thing about the matrix, as presented in the famous 1999 film "the matrix", is that is actually not that bad for one specific reason. the people there are real.

its telling that in the movie neo is not given close friends or family or a partner or any meaningful kind of human conection, it helps to sell the world as distant and fake and inhuman.

but the thing is that any relation you form inside the matrix... is actually a real human conection. like say you are in the matrix and you start dating this really cute, cool person who likes to play boardgames and s a fan of romantic comedies and is studying to become and architect. that is a real human who is somewhere in the rows of human cultivated fields connected to a bunch of tubes floating in goo. but when they are talking to you in the matrix they are actually talking to you. the things they say actually mean something, the love you feel for each other is real.

like, thanks morpheus, your fight for Zion is cool and all but i have a daughter, i have my best friend with whom i went to college. and morpheus might say something about how the college was fake and it never existed but the moments i had with my friend were real!

the real problem with the simulation machine is solipsism. in a premise where you ARE actually the only mind that exists and everything else was a simulation then, well, that is a lot more scary (would it? if all your friends were AIs would that mean they were not real? food for thought), but my point is that is not the premise of that movie.

i would really like a story where someone is woken up from the matrix and they are resolute to find their partner somewhere on the fields of bodies maybe to wake them up too. or maybe the partner convinces them to go back into the matrix, i dont know. there is a lot of place for drama there.

I wake from a nightmare.

It isn't my nightmare.

Well… it is mine. My brain provided the framework and context. I was in the training console, one of the battle sims, one of the ones where everything goes to shit, one of the ones where they fuck up the parameters just to watch you panic and squirm until you fucking crack.

That was me. I cracked. Four of the hell sims and I cracked hard.

The battle in the nightmare wasn't a sim. It was real. It was Morrigan's.

I'm sitting in my quarters, sweating and trembling, clutching at my chest as I try to sort out what's mine and what's Morrigan's.

Neural bleed.

Fuck.

No… it's… I've run through the playback, in full, three times with Morrigan. It's enough times for the individual events to stick in my brain.

That doesn't explain the screaming.

It doesn't explain the soul rending scream that is still echoing in my skull right now.

Zephyrus was a sabre class, front line heavy. The team has spent... I don't even know how many hours in the playback analyzing the battlespace in the moments before Zephyrus’ pilot died? The rogue incendiary burned straight into the cockpit, the pilot was probably vaporized before they even realized their error.

But Zephyrus screamed. It screamed and screamed and screamed.

Morrigan had muted that part, trying to spare me, but it fucking bled through the link anyway. Now I'm having fucking nightmares of the sound of someone becoming unmade.

Salvage ops recovered the mech, whisking it off to god knows where.

I don't actually know what happens to AI's that lose their pilots. It's my job to keep them alive, not deal with them after the fact.

I've… shit… I've worked on Zephyrus. It wasn't the same as Morrigan. None of them are the same as Morrigan, but… shit…

I shuck off my tangled sheets and sit on the edge of the bed, futilely trying not to let my thoughts get away from me.

There had been a personality matrix meant for me. There had to have been. Mech AIs are completely custom made for their pilots. Mine likely wasn't much past the most basic template by the time I washed out, nothing more than a collection of algorithms and a dataset consisting of my psych profile.

It never got to be.

Was that better or worse than the horrible scream that I can still hear?

I can't be alone right now.

I jump off the bed and pull on some clothes, leaving the room without even knowing where I'm going.

I pass a few of the night crew. They watch curiously as I walk by. An engineer, barefoot in her night clothes, can hardly be the strangest thing they've seen.

I barely notice them.

My thoughts are spiraling now.

I was meant to be a pilot. It's the only thing I ever actually wanted. But I fucked it all up. I tricked everyone, myself included, into thinking that I could make the cut.

Fucking hell. A pilot died and I'm fixating on my own feelings of inadequacy?

What would I have done? What could my presence in the battlefield have changed?

Chances are it would have been me dying… or worse, freezing up and getting someone else killed.

I freeze, my wrist hovering uncertainly over a security access reader. With a sickening, crystalizing clarity, I realize that I have unconsciously made my way to her. Beyond the security door is the vestibule leading to Morrigan's cockpit.

What the fuck am I doing here?

My presence at this hour, though odd, would not be remarked upon. It is not uncommon for engineers to have moments of insight in the middle of the night. It is not uncommon for us to need to access hardware for analysis and simulation at all hours.

But tonight there is no flash of insight. Tonight, I'm not even an engineer. I'm just a scared little girl wrapped up in her own feelings of failure, with a head full of someone else's grief.

Neural bleed.

I can't deny it. I'm spending too much time with Morrigan. I should go back to my quarters, request a psych eval and some time off, try to get my head on straight.

And yet, I hesitate.

I want to step through this threshold. I want to go to her. And… what?

I can't integrate with her, not in any kind of way that matters, not with my engineer's rig.

I will *never* experience the full body sensorium of a pilot linking with her mech. It is horrible knowing I was meant for something, having full awareness of all the expectations of me, both external and internal, only to have that life snatched away because I wasn't good enough. Half my soul is missing. There's this yawning void inside me that can never be filled. Not by Morrigan or anyone.

I wipe a tear off my face. I'm in no state to do any sort of interfacing. I'm in no state for much of anything.

I don't want to be alone. I don't know how to not be alone

I press my wrist to the security panel. It confirms my identity and flashes green.

My access will be logged. This is a horrible impulse to follow for so many reasons.

I don't fucking care.

It takes everything I have to maintain composure, to not burst into tears and run to the open hatch of the cockpit.

The soft red glow illuminating the cockpit brightens slightly, lighting my way.

She knows I'm here.

Does she even want me here? Why would she? I'm not her pilot. I'm not any mech’s pilot.

The glow pulses, beckoning me. The cradle shifts to a configuration that I know is meant for me.

I unzip the sweatshirt that I'm wearing and throw it unceremoniously in the vestibule before falling into her embrace.

It's too familiar, the motions of this routine as her jacks slip into the ports on my rig.

I'm too close.

I'm not close enough.

I nearly sob as data streams into my consciousness. The void fills, just slightly.

All systems green.

It isn't enough. It will never be enough.

It has to be enough.

The data stream ebbs and I receive a ping across the link.

- STATUS?

My breath catches. My eyes flutter open, darting to any one of the many cockpit cameras focused on me.

She wants my status.

“I couldn't sleep,” I tell her. “Bad dreams.”

While I agree that S8E1 didn't have the most refreshing(?) idea (stuck in simulated reality, punished by Rick from petty reason , Morty gone berserk ) but somehow I prefer this episode over some of the past with similar theme.

Rick being petty here feel at least... enjoyable? Idk I like that it feels more like an accident than him purposely ruining his grandkids life (like in vat of acid, heist ep) he still pretty much an asshole but I feel like he's not cruel. An apology would have been nice but eh, I can see it as Rick still having trouble saying sorry directly.

And Rick harming himself by jumping into radioactive meltdown with no protection, feel like him punishing himself... (I mean, yeah Rick could always fix himself but normally Rick would put the protection first and go in and out. Clean, untouched. Especially when he has the protection right there. But he just use it on Morty and summer (and that dude)

I don't really mind Summer and Morty getting mindblow at the end. I make sense to me idk. They might have interesting changed in the matrix. But its still fake and they are still teenage in real world. At least they got mindblow on their term.

At least it's not celebrity cameos like season 7 premiere 😒

Also With the mindset of the creator right now. And the numbers of the episodes they still have in stock. I won't hope for the series to be fully serialized anytime soon

After forcibly removing you from The Matrix, Neo’s hope that you would eventually learn to accept your new life in the real world never comes to fruition. So he has to try alternative measures.

His idea comes from the training programs but he tries something a bit more ambitious, he’s The One so he can practically do whatever he wants. He creates a whole simulated suburban town, designed like the 1950s and he keeps you plugged into it. Your mind is wiped of everything that came before and all you know is this simulation, you believe it to be the real world, you believe Neo is your husband and you’re happily married but you keep having such vivid dreams, where you live a completely different life (the life you had in the matrix) in a completely different world that is far more advanced and you have a successful career, you tell Neo about these dreams every morning before he “leaves for work” (unplugs from the simulation) and he acts amused telling you how absurd they sound.

One day you’re running errands when you see Neo’s car parked outside a motel. You watch him enter one of the rooms and your mind thinks the worst, that he is having an affair. Determined to confront him you storm over to the motel and barge into the room you saw him disappear into, prepared to find him with another woman only to be greeted by an empty room. Your feet quickly rush to the bathroom but that’s empty too. Feeling confused you come back to the room and notice the phone hanging off the hook and carefully put it back while your mind races wondering if you were imagining things. You startle when the shrill sound of the phone ringing echos through the room, making your heart leap out your chest. You quickly answer it and everything goes dark.

When you wake up, you’re in an unfamiliar dark room, you can feel the cold air against your skin as your blurry eyes try to look at your surroundings. It’s hard, your eyes hurt, you’re unaware of how long it’s been since you last used them. You look down, realising you’re strapped down to what looks like a dentist chair, you panic and start crying out for help. You notice all these strange ports on your skin with wires attached, you feel like you’re in a nightmare. Then Neo comes running into the room, realising you managed to escape the simulation. He soothes you, telling you this is just a dream as he plugs you back in.

Once you’re back inside the simulation, you wake up confused, the ‘nightmare’ still fresh in your mind and Neo is there ready to feed you some lie. You fainted in front of a motel he tells you but your memory tells you otherwise, you feel confused, wondering where the nightmare started and reality ended.

The next day while Neo is “at work” you revisit the motel room, it looks just like it did in your “dream” and the phone is sat on the beside table. You sit on the bed and hesitantly lift the phone off the hook and put it to your ear after taking a deep breath. Nothing happens. All you hear is the dial tone. With a sigh you put the phone back down and shake your head, convinced it was all just a dream you return home and your life with Neo continues as normal for a while again…

alright , i’ve officially had some time to actually think over the new rick and morty episode so here are my thoughts (spoilers ahead obviously)

First off, it was a fantastic episode overall, and a great start to the new season. Definitely gives me hope for the upcoming episode, although i will dock it points for it essentially being an attempt at another Vat of Acid episode imo.

I love Summer’s middle aged woman behavior and her interactions with Beth were some good comedic moments. I do wish they went a little further into the trauma she actually endured being stuck in a prison matrix. Im a little tired of her always needing to be the “strong female empowerment” character in the show. Let that girl cry PLEASE. And erasing all her development in the end for a stupid joke about her wanting to get high left a bad taste in my mouth. I understand that this is an episodic show that needs characters to somewhat stay the same but come on she could have made sooo much development in one episode and they threw it all away because she couldn’t bother to listen to herself. Seemed very out of character for her more recently. Although i am very happy with how they portray Summer in the Matrix and her plan of using Morty as a war weapon was fucked up but shows off how intelligent she really is.

Morty on the other hand, had a LOT of interesting developments this episode. I really enjoy realistic, jaded grown up Morty. And i especially enjoy how similar his character sounds to Evil morty. VA Harry Belden did an incredible job with the episode and definitely deserves a shoutout Imo. I do think it’s very interesting how Morty’s new war induced PTSD is shown in the episode. He’s experienced real life war on many occasions throughout the show and i highly doubt ALL of them have been mind blown from him by rick, otherwise how would he continue to have grown to the fighter he is now? And in this episode he KNOWS he’s in a simulation interacting with NPC’s i find it hard to believe that he would become so attatched to CJ knowing that this was a simulation buttttt i might just be nit picky. I also think it’s interesting that he refers to himself as having PTSD for the first time in the show despite the fact that he’s clearly had it for a long time now. I think it’s sad that he only validated his own trauma after experiencing the stereotype of what causes PTSD but that’s a whole new rant.

Watching Morty stand up to rick as this grown version of himself and give Rick a taste of his own medicine was satisfying and a well deserved growth in his character after he traps rick in his own Matrix. It’s especially refreshing to see the writers show off exactly how smart morty is and what he’s capable of making with the tank and the insta-death charger. I was also fully expecting them to finally make Morty bi when they introduced the CJ plot line LMAO but despite that I do like that after erasing his memory he’s still left with the physical reminder/scar of another fucked up experience rick has given him in the form of the tattoo. I hope they continue to make nods to that in the future of the show. Finally I loved the way Morty and Summer were able to make up in the end and Summer being fully truthful with her brother was oddly heartwarming ? Still fucked up but a great scene overall.

Rick’s behavior throughout this episode was the least interesting in my opinion. He acts exactly as evil as he did in Vat of Acid and continues to ignore the problems he starts the minute that Beth tells him not to reset Morty and Summer. He knew exactly how this was gonna end after he fried their brains too long in the Matrix and continued to let them suffer with that trauma anyway. Idek which is worse at this point 😭 I did think it was funny that all this was started over a fucking phone charger when I’ve barely seen rick use a phone in the show anyways. I did really enjoy as well that the writers continue to let Rick actually get hurt. Between getting outsmarted by Morty and literally getting his skin melted off by radiation it’s still nice to watch him get knocked off of god status every now and then.

All together i did really enjoy the episode and i probably have more thoughts but it’s almost 1 am and my brain is fried from overthinking this damn show (again) so let me know what y’all think ❤️
