1. What is the coolest math concept you learned about this year?
17. What was your favourite math video this year?
:))
Unfortunately the concept and video I was going to answer with (Defining the integers and rationals through equivalence relations and this video about it by Another Roof) happened last year so I can't answer with that.
Instead for 17, although it's sort of a physics video, is "Cursed Units" by Joseph Newton.
youtube
Part of the reason I like it is because of some of the weird stuff in it. The other half is the excellent use of the piano playing backing music to communicate suprise and confusion (I'm not explaining it very well but you'll see what I mean) In terms of maths concepts there's a few:
The cross product is also possible for 7 dimensions. This is more of a fun fact than a concept as I don't really know much more about it, but aparently it's related to octurnions in the same way the regular cross product is related to quaturnions.
There was a talk I went to recently about the Reimann Hypothesis and Random Matrix Theory. There was this moment where the guy doing the talk showed a two curves on a graph, one from random matrix theory and another from an area of maths more closely related to the Reimann Zeta Function (I can't remember what it was exactly). There was a good 10 seconds where I was waiting for the second curve to be overlayed before realising that they were both there and matched perfectly.
Learning the peano axioms was cool. I understood the basic idea of "every natural number is either one or the successor of another natural number" but to see the rigourous definition was cool (although I do feel like it was kinda thrown at us with little explanation)(part of me wants to do a series of posts on this and constructing the other number systems like integers and rationals)
As someone who hated A-Level statistics, I was not expecting to enjoy my statistics module as much as I did. It was really cool to see the basic rules of probability functions and how they could be used to construct stuff like random variables, mass/density functions, distribution functions, expected values and variances, the law of large numbers and even the central limit theorem.
All in all, lots of good stuff.

Biocomposites: A Sustainable Future for Architecture
As the world shifts towards sustainable practices, the construction industry is exploring new materials to meet growing environmental demands. One of the most promising innovations is biocomposites, which blend natural fibers and biodegradable or synthetic resins to create a versatile, eco-friendly alternative to traditional construction materials. This article delves into how biocomposites are shaping the future of architecture, highlighting their benefits, applications, and challenges in the construction industry.
What Are Biocomposites?
Biocomposites are composite materials made from a combination of natural fibers—such as hemp, flax, or bamboo—and a matrix that binds them together. This matrix can be synthetic, like plastic, or bio-based, making the material partially or fully biodegradable. Unlike traditional composites, which rely on non-renewable resources like fiberglass or carbon fiber, biocomposites prioritize sustainability by utilizing renewable resources and minimizing environmental impact.
This innovation in material science presents an opportunity to significantly reduce the construction industry's carbon footprint. By leveraging abundant and renewable natural fibers, biocomposites offer an alternative to reducing dependence on energy-intensive materials like steel, concrete, and plastics. The potential environmental benefits of biocomposites make them an attractive solution for architects committed to green building practices.
Environmental Impact and Sustainability
The environmental benefits of biocomposites extend beyond their use of renewable materials. Culturing natural fibers used in biocomposites typically requires less water, pesticides, and fertilizers than traditional crops. Plants like hemp and flax also capture carbon dioxide from the atmosphere during their growth, acting as a carbon sink. This natural sequestration process helps offset the emissions of harvesting and processing the fibers.
Additionally, many biocomposites are biodegradable or recyclable, reducing waste in landfills and lowering the overall environmental impact of construction projects. In cases where synthetic resins are used, hybrid biocomposites are still a more sustainable option than traditional, fully synthetic composites. As the global construction industry strives to meet sustainability targets, biocomposites present a promising avenue for reducing the environmental toll of building materials.
Notably, biocomposites can also contribute to the circular economy by encouraging the reuse and recycling of materials. End-of-life biocomposite components can be composted or recycled into new materials, reducing the need for virgin resources and promoting resource efficiency. As more architects and builders adopt circular economy principles, biocomposites will likely play a significant role in sustainable construction.
Versatility and Performance
Biocomposites are not just environmentally friendly; they are also highly versatile in terms of their applications in architecture. Depending on the specific fibers and matrix used, biocomposites can offer a range of mechanical properties suitable for various construction needs. For example, flax-based biocomposites are known for their tensile strength and can be used in load-bearing structures, while hemp-based composites offer excellent thermal insulation.
Architects and engineers increasingly incorporate biocomposites into structural elements, façade panels, roofing systems, and interior finishes. The materials are lightweight yet strong, reducing the overall weight of buildings and lowering transportation and installation costs. Moreover, biocomposites' resistance to corrosion, pests, and moisture makes them durable in various climates and conditions.
One of the key advantages of biocomposites is their ability to be molded into complex shapes, giving architects greater design flexibility. This property allows for creating innovative building forms and façade designs that would be difficult or costly to achieve with traditional materials. Additionally, biocomposites can be easily adapted to various building techniques, from prefabrication to on-site construction, making them a versatile option for new and retrofitting projects.
Challenges in Adoption
Despite their many advantages, biocomposites' widespread adoption in the construction industry faces several challenges. One of the most significant hurdles is cost. While the natural fibers used in biocomposites are often less expensive than synthetic alternatives, the processing and development of biodegradable matrices can be costly. In some cases, the price of biocomposites is higher than that of conventional building materials, which can deter architects and builders from choosing them.
Another challenge is the durability of biocomposites in harsh environmental conditions. Natural fibers are prone to absorbing moisture, weakening the material over time. To address this issue, ongoing research is focused on developing treatments and coatings that improve water resistance and prevent degradation. However, once these solutions become more widely available and affordable, some builders may hesitate to fully embrace biocomposites in projects where durability is a primary concern.
In addition, standardized regulations and building codes for biocomposites are currently needed. This lack of regulation makes it difficult for architects and contractors to know how biocomposites will perform over the long term, leading to uncertainty about their use in large-scale projects. Establishing industry-wide testing, performance, and certification standards will be crucial for increasing confidence in biocomposites as a reliable building material.
Future Outlook: Advancements and Innovation
Looking ahead, the future of biocomposites in architecture is promising, with ongoing advancements likely to address the current limitations. Innovations in biocomposite formulations, such as using new natural fibers or more durable bio-based matrices, are expanding the range of applications for these materials. For example, scientists are exploring the potential of agricultural waste products, like straw and coconut husks, as new sources of fibers for biocomposites, further increasing their sustainability.
Biocomposites are also expected to become more cost-competitive with traditional materials as research progresses. Economies of scale, driven by increased demand for sustainable building solutions, will likely drive down production costs. Additionally, governments and organizations worldwide are offering incentives for green construction, which may accelerate the adoption of biocomposites in mainstream architecture.
Collaborations between material scientists, architects, and engineers will be essential for realizing the full potential of biocomposites. By working together, these professionals can develop new applications, improve material performance, and create innovative building designs that highlight the unique properties of biocomposites.
Biocomposites represent a significant step forward in the quest for sustainable architectural materials. Their environmental benefits, versatility, and performance make them a compelling choice for eco-conscious builders and architects. Although there are challenges to overcome, the ongoing development of biocomposites promises a future where sustainable, renewable materials play a central role in construction. As the architectural world embraces sustainability, biocomposites will likely be at the forefront of innovative, eco-friendly design solutions.

I would say the only people we dont need striking are farmers, but that everyone else should go on strike and start guerilla farming
(Not land clearing; urban and suburban disrupted habitat ie previously developed or agricultural land)
Wait ok lets keep emergency medical, libraries, water/power techs, ISP staff, and the fire depts (which, maybe they need some kind of volunteer auxiliary labor whether thats currently structured or not: like uber still exists as a rideshare thing and theres priority for vital service providers etc)
But like manufacturing, retail, education, entertainment, extractive industry, construction, private maintainance......people dont die without these so youre not killing anyone by stopping to focus directly on subsistence
Within civ, the matrix, the system, whatever....the food we grow goes a lot further if we're not using it to feed other animals we want to eat later, its just the math of it, of collapse....lets make it a planned demolition instead of going mad max with it
Or you could farm just the right ratio of pigs and yams to live like a king, on your roof. Godspeed you unhalal* emperor
(*This is a complicated and toneless joke about how indonesia is bombing new guineans, who are really good at farming meat actually, because they have eden to do it in and reasonable expectations/demands of that environment vis a vis carrying capacity and livestock/crop choice)

Benefits / Cost vs. Value Impact / Tax Break Factors of Remodeling Your Home
There are many benefits to remodeling your home; at the top of the list is pride of homeownership. For so many of us, we have to remodel our home in stages or as various home products reach obsolescence or disrepair. If you do not have an urgent need to remodel due to unexpected events (ie. leaking roof, structural damage, etc.), how do you decide what takes priority? Lets review some of the relevant factors to consider when evaluating renovation needs.
Benefits of Remodeling
Increasing the Value of Your Home
Reduce Utility Cost by Increasing Your Homes Energy Efficiency
Make Your Home More Comfortable
Reduce Maintenance Repair Cost
More Effective Use of Space and Storage
Correct Obsolete Products or Home Disrepair
Correct Poor or Ineffective Home Design
Create a Safer Environment for Aging Members
Fit Your Lifestyle Better
Greater Homeowner Pride
Cost v Value Relationship on Major Remodeling
According to REMODELING magazine, the following home improvement areas were measured to reflect the cost vs value relationship within the same year of completing. These pricing matrix were measured for the national housing remodeling market and the Houston housing remodeling market analyzing both midrange projects and upscale projects. The national average for payback for a composite of renovation projects range was 64% - 74% in the same year.
Project Improvements Cost Recouped (same year)
Window Replacement (vinyl or wood)   74%
Bathroom Remodel   60%
Major Kitchen Remodel   66%
Two Story Addition   71%
Master Suite Addition   60%
Family Room Addition   69%
Marwood Construction cost vs value advise for their clients, based on these results, that it is best if you are planning a major remodeling project that you consider living in your home for at least 5 years after your remodel. Beyond 5 years the effects of inflation on new construction cost and the rising cost of land in most metro areas, remodeling can show an attractive return on investment.
There are many other cost factors to consider as part of the home remodeling investment equation when assessing your renovation needs. This is such a case when you are considering alternatives such as moving instead of remaining in your home and remodeling. The cost associated with placing your home for sale on the market include sales commissions, closing cost and moving expenses should be weighed as part of the entire financial picture.
Another major financial disadvantage of selling your existing home is that the accumulated capital gains you experience from your existing home are lost in the transaction of buying a new home. Whereas if you were to remain in your home and remodel or build on an addition, your existing homes appreciated value would increase at a greater rate amount.
Other considerations of remodeling are the current tax breaks that should be considered when evaluating financial considerations of different renovation project needs.
Current Tax Breaks
Cash for Clunker Appliances
Starting this fall, as part of the economic stimulus plan under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, the “Cash for Clunkers” extends to Appliances. Basically, purchase a new energy efficient appliance and get a tax credit of $200. Just like the “Cash for Clunker Automobiles” there is a set dollar amount set aside for this program and once the money is gone, the program is over.
Appliance companies should have available to you the list of products they carry that qualify. You may have to surrender your existing appliance in order to receive the benefit.
Energy Efficiency Tax Break
Install a solar panel to provide your home energy and not only will you see a substantial tax credit and your electric usage drop, but you may even be able to sell energy back to the electric company.
For those of us who are less adventurous – upgrade your boiler, heater, furnace, air conditioner, windows, roof, or insulation and you will not only see savings on your gas and electric bills.
The credit covers 30% of the energy saving improvements, capping at $1,500 for 2009 and 2010. The credit may no longer be available after 2010. When you complete your tax return be sure to include Form 5695. The IRS website gives more information.
Potential Future Tax Breaks (Pending Extension 2017)
The Home Improvements Revitalize the Economy (HIRE) Act of 2009
Provides a tax deduction of up to $2,000 per family, or a tax credit of $500, for the purchase of certain materials and home furnishings. If you use green products that meet LEED (or other recognized standards) the tax deduction would actually double. Purchases excluded from the HIRE Act are major appliances, house wares and electronics.

6 Tips for Turning Your Garage Into an Outdoor Kitchen
There are many reasons to convert your garage into a kitchen. Especially if it’s attached to a garage you rarely use. It can become just another place to put your crap. So why not convert that space into something that can be used to cook outdoors year round??
You’ll be able to create more square footage in your home and maybe even have a dining room. If your original kitchen was too small, you’ll be able to expand your work area and create the kitchen you’ve always dreamed of having. Once you’ve decided you want to turn your garage into a kitchen there are a few things you’ll want to keep in mind as you go about your project. Here are a few tips.
Understand the Basics of Your Conversion
Make a list of all the things you currently keep in your garage. You’ll want to find homes for all that stuff. If you are storing stuff that could easily be stored in a shed and you have one, then it’s just a matter of moving that to the shed.
If you don’t have a shed, you might consider renting a storage unit or building a shed on your property. There are many big box stores that sell storage shed kits that will suit your project nicely. You’ll also want to understand the total cost of your conversion. You’ll want to research how to finance home improvement because you’ll most likely be getting a loan to complete this project.
You’ll also want to research any building codes or permits you may need to obtain through the city, county, or HOA you belong to. There may be restrictions you aren’t aware of and could cause you heartache and more expense if you don’t follow the rules.
Look at Your Load Bearing Walls
If your garage and kitchen share a wall and you are considering knocking out the wall between them, you’ll want to review your building plans to make sure you aren’t removing or damaging a load bearing wall.
A load bearing wall is one that is critical to holding the whole structure up and in place. If you happen to remove the wrong parts, you could risk part of your home collapsing. Most homes have plans that have been submitted to the city or county offices and can be reviewed.
If you had your home built, you’ll probably already have a set of plans that were used to build it. You’ll want to review it with a contractor to ensure you’re removing or changing the right parts to a load bearing wall.
Don’t Forget About Insulation
Most newer homes have well insulated garages, but there are still a few homes around that don’t. You’ll want to be sure to get the right R-rating insulation to keep your new kitchen insulated from the cold outdoors. Depending on where you live, you’ll need to research what R-value insulation is appropriate.
Getting the wrong insulation means a colder room and higher heating bills. Not to mention the possibility of water pipes breaking. Your kitchen will have plumbing fixtures that will need to be protected.
Check the Windows
If your garage has windows, you’ll want to consider upgrading them to good solid double pane windows. If you’re going to be installing windows, you’ll want to review where your electrical wires run so you don’t end up having to reroute or cut lines. You don’t always have to buy new windows to get what you need. Many construction outlets will have returns and craigslist is a great place to search for the right window at the right price.
Decide on Kitchen Appliances
Are you going to replace all your kitchen appliances? Perhaps you just bought that new dishwasher a year ago and it still runs like a dream. Consider smaller appliances like a sink disposal and trash compactor when you’re planning your layout.
All of these types of appliances will need to be situated to best utilize the existing structure. Perhaps your kitchen drains are easily accessible once you tear down the wall between the garage and the kitchen. If this is the case, then you’ll want to situate your sink where you are able to plug directly into the existing drains.
This saves a bunch of time and money from having to route new drains to the exterior. Your water faucets will probably be the same, too.
Don’t Forget the Time Factor
When you’re planning this conversion, consider that at some point, your kitchen won’t be available to use. It could take a few weeks to get everything in place to work again. If you don’t have a plan for this time, you might be in hot water with your family, let alone uncomfortable yourself.
This doesn’t have to happen. You can consider working in stages, so that each stage has a short period of time that the kitchen isn’t used and then it’s usable again. Repeat this until you’ve finished the project. Or you may consider putting your family up in a rental while you finish the job. If you’re able to afford that, it’s a viable option. Whatever the outcome, don’t forget that at some point, both your garage and your kitchen won’t be usable.
If you aren’t using your garage for its intended purpose and you’ve decided to make use of that space to extend your home and build a kitchen, you’ll need to remember these tips to help you create the best experience for your project and for your family.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a garage typically included in the square footage of a house? In most cases, the square footage of your home includes only livable spaces. So, a garage would only count toward the square footage of a home if it is finished (with flooring, walls, heat, and electricity) and has been legally converted into a living space.
Can I convert my garage without a permit? The answer depends on where you live and the scope of your project, so check with your local zoning department before making any changes. If you are making structural or electrical changes, moving or adding plumbing, or installing HVAC, you will likely need a permit.
Will converting my garage add value to my home?Again, the answer depends on where you live and what type of space you are building. If your garage conversion is properly permitted and performed professionally, it can add interest and valuable square footage to your property. If, however, your neighborhood has limited street parking or your home has limited storage, a converted space might negatively impact the value of your home.
How much does it cost to convert a garage? On average, it will cost between $5,000 and $26,000 to convert an unfinished garage into a livable space. If you are installing new floors, HVAC, electrical, and plumbing, that cost could climb to $50,000 or more depending on the project and the size of the space.

With the rise of online shopping, it's become even more important for mattress manufacturers to provide clear and accurate information about their products. One way manufacturers can ensure transparency is by providing detailed product descriptions on their websites. This should include information about the materials used, certifications obtained, and compliance with safety standards. It's also important for manufacturers to disclose if their mattresses contain any potential allergens or hazardous materials. In addition to product descriptions, manufacturers should also provide independent third-party certifications to validate their claims. Certifications such as CertiPUR-US® and GREENGUARD Gold can provide reassurance that the mattress has been tested and meets certain safety and environmental standards. Best Practices For Consumer Awareness Consumer awareness is key to making an informed decision when purchasing a mattress. By following some best practices, consumers can ensure they are choosing a safe and transparent product. One of the first steps is to research and compare different mattress brands and models. Look for reliable sources of information such as independent reviews, industry publications, and consumer advocacy websites. These sources can provide valuable insights into the safety and quality of different mattresses. When researching, pay close attention to the materials used in the mattresses. Look for certifications and disclosures that validate the safety and transparency of the product. Avoid mattresses that have questionable or vague labeling. Finally, don't be afraid to reach out to the manufacturer directly if you have any questions or concerns. Reputable companies will be transparent and responsive to consumer inquiries. Remember, your safety and satisfaction are paramount when shopping for a new mattress.
