Bomb threats overwhelmed Czech, Slovak schools
Schools in the Czech Republic and Slovakia faced bomb threats, leading to school closures, schedule changes, and urgent investigations.
According to Czech police, a threatening email was sent to schools across the country. Meanwhile, nearly 270 primary and secondary schools across Slovakia received bomb threats.
We are currently investigating a threatening email sent to hundreds of schools across the Czech Republic, in which the sender claims the institutions have been mined.
Czech Interior Minister Vít Rakušan stated:
The police are handling the situation in a way that ensures the safety of both students and teachers while causing as little disruption to the school operations as possible.
The Czech Republic remains on high alert for school security following the December 2023 school shooting in Prague that left 14 people dead and 25 injured. In response to the new threat, some schools in Prague closed or changed their normal schedules on Tuesday. Police explained that the email spread “to approximately 500 schools nationwide.”
In another incident on Tuesday, two children suffered injuries when a girl attacked her classmates with a knife at a secondary school in the Czech town of Domažlice.
Bomb threats in Slovakia
In Slovakia, bomb threats led to the interruption or cancellation of classes. Police were deployed early Tuesday morning to search several schools, but no bombs were found or hazardous materials were discovered.
Interior Minister Matúš Šutaj-Eštok confirmed at a press conference Tuesday that police were actively investigating the threats. Police opened a criminal case and considered the bomb threats a terrorist attack, Rastislav Polakovič, vice-president of the Police Corps for Internal Order and Security, said.
Slovak President Peter Pellegrini stated:
Such reports are increasing in a number of areas, causing growing concern, complications and real economic damage, and deserve severe punishment. I trust the police will deploy all their forces to ensure the perpetrators are found and deservedly punished as soon as possible.
Several political parties also reacted to the situation, with leading opposition party Progressive Slovakia calling on Prime Minister Robert Fico to convene a security council.

Slovakia’s Constitutional Court has ruled that most of the criticised changes to the country’s Criminal Code are constitutional and can be implemented, a decision that could potentially jeopardise Slovakia’s access to EU funds. On Wednesday evening, Slovakia’s Constitutional Court ruled that parts of the country’s criminal code reform package, which includes a reduction in sentences for serious crimes, including corruption, a reduction in statutes of limitations and the abolition of the special prosecutor’s office, are not unconstitutional. “The statutes of limitations will be reduced where the reform has reduced them,” Constitutional Court President Ivan Fiačan told a press conference. Only those parts of the reform that interfere retroactively with criminal proceedings were found to be unconstitutional. The court also questioned the ruling coalition’s handling of the penalty of confiscation of property and ruled that the possibility of using illegally obtained evidence in favour of the accused was unconstitutional. The decision was quickly welcomed by Interior Minister and Hlas leader Matúš Šutaj Eštok. “Today’s decision of the Constitutional Court confirmed that neither the process of adopting the law nor the abolition of the Special Prosecutor’s Office – that is, the parts that the opposition was organising protests against (…) – violated the constitution,” Šutaj Eštok said. Meanwhile, the opposition parties KDH and SLOVENSKO continue criticising the reform, saying that the new criminal law is “against morality and will not have a good effect on society”. “Just because some parts of the reform are consistent with the Constitution, that does not mean that they are morally right and in line with the public interest,” said Gábor Grendel (SLOVENSKO), deputy chairman of the parliament’s defence and security committee.

The 71-year-old man who attempted to assassinate Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico last week may not have acted as a so-called “lone wolf”, Interior Minister Matúš Šutaj Eštok (Hlas) reported, adding he was not the one who deleted the alleged shooters Facebook history hours after the attack. According to the new information from the new team set to investigate the assassination, the 71-year-old Slovak citizen who allegedly shot Fico on 15 May and has since been arrested had his Facebook and communication history deleted two hours after the incident. “However, it was not deleted by him and apparently not by his wife either,” said Šutaj Eštok at a press conference on Sunday afternoon, which was focused on the security situation in the country and was attended by several government representatives. “Based on this operational information, we are therefore also working with the possibility that a group of people is behind the assault,” Šutaj Eštok added. Defence Minister Robert Kaliňák (Smer-SD) said that it was possible that the attacker had communicated with someone in his circle about the assassination attempt, making it more plausible “that he did not act alone”. Pavol Gašpar, the deputy director in charge of Slovak Information Service (SIS), warned that the security situation in Slovakia is serious and is “not made any easier by the fact that foreign media are here, and Slovakia is in the centre of attention now”.

They are going to milk this for all it's worth. It wouldn't surprise me if it was a rival from the same party that arranged the attempt.

“Lone wolf” could not be acting alone – Slovak Interior Minister
The “lone wolf,” a 71-year-old suspect in the attempted assassination of Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, might not be acting alone, according to Euractiv.
Interior Minister Matúš Šutaj-Eštok spoke at a press conference on Sunday on the security situation in the country. He stated that the gunman was not the one who deleted the alleged shooter’s Facebook story hours after the attack.
However, it was not deleted by him and apparently not by his wife either. Based on this operational information, we are therefore also working with the possibility that a group of people is behind the assault.
Defence Minister Robert Kaliňák stated that the lone wolf might have communicated with someone in his inner circle about the assassination attempt. This made it more likely “that he did not act alone,” the minister added.
Pavol Gašpar, the deputy director in charge of Slovak Information Service (SIS), warned that the security situation in Slovakia was serious and was “not made any easier by the fact that foreign media are here, and Slovakia is in the centre of attention now.”
It cannot be ruled out that we are a breeding ground for the activities of intelligence services from abroad.
As of Sunday evening, Fico was still in hospital in Banská Bystrica, according to the hospital’s deputy director Milan Urbani. The prime minister’s life was no longer in danger, although his condition remained serious, he added.

Tusk receives death threats after Fico shooting
As Slovakian PM Robert Fico fights for his life, his Polish counterpart Donald Tusk unveils a death threat he has received on social media.
Fico remains in stable but critical condition in hospital after the shooting in a town northeast of Bratislava. On Thursday, one man was charged with the attack. Although his identity remains officially unidentified, media speculate that he is a 71-year-old writer, whom Interior Minister Matúš Šutaj-Eštok described as a “lone wolf.”
The minister also confirmed that the gunman did not belong to any political groups, despite the political motivation of the attack.
I can confirm that this person is not a member of any right-wing or left-wing radical groups.
A day after the attack, Prime Minister Donald Tusk shared a screenshot of one of the anonymous social media posts on X praising the perpetrator and calling for Tusk’s assassination.
Slovaks gave us an example of what to do with Donald Tusk if he fails on the CPK [the Central Communications Port].
The announcement implied a project by the former Law and Justice (PiS, ECR) government to build a new airport about 40 kilometres southwest of Warsaw.
Other European leaders also got death threats following the attack on Fico. These include Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić, President of the Serbian Republic in Bosnia and Herzegovina Milorad Dodik, and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. Kosovo’s Prime Minister Albin Kurti is also on the list.

Slovakia extends border checks with Hungary until December 23 amid growing migration pressure
Slovakia decided to extend internal border controls with Hungary for another month, until December 23, in response to a surge in migration along the Western Balkans route.
Slovak Interior Minister Matúš Šutaj Eštok stressed the need to fight organised criminal groups involved in human smuggling as one of the arguments in favour of extending the measure. He stated that border controls would prevent any illegal movements.
“Despite the fact that we have recorded a decrease in the number of detained persons who have an unauthorised stay in our territory, we want to continue our vigorous approach to all smugglers and thus continue to send a signal that they will not easily pass through our territory.”
Eštok further stated that by extending border controls, the country wants to ensure the safety of all its citizens, as well as prevent the entry of anyone who might pose a security threat. He also noted that the checks are a response to events in Serbia, where more than 6,000 migrants have been detained, as well as people suspected of smuggling and other criminal activities.
