As someone who grew up in Alaska, I get really angry whenever i see people getting upset at Ingenious people for hunting because people don’t realize how expensive things are in Alaska.

I’m going to start by stating that you can’t farm that far up. Sunlight is too inconsistent, and it can get up to 46 degrees Fahrenheit in the summer, and in the winter is as cold as -44 degrees Fahrenheit. “Well they could make a greenhouse or a building to farm in”. No, they can’t. They don’t have trees in Utqiagvik, it’s a tundra. It’s a frozen desert, there are no trees or supplies they could build with.

If they wanted to make a building for a farm, they’d have to have supplies shipped up to build it. To add to that, this imaginary farm would have to feed over 4,000 people, which would cost millions to make. Making a farm isn’t feasible, but Hunting/fishing is since they’re surrounded by an ocean from 3 sides.

So you can visualize this and see what I mean by there’s no trees, here’s Utqiagvik in the Summer and in the Winter. Yes that’s the Ocean freezing over

Alaska is one of the few places you can say that people truly need to hunt to survive. Food in Alaska is incredibly expensive. I lived in the Mat-su Valley, which is one of the most populated areas in Alaska, and food was still incredibly expensive.

I’ll give you an example. I’ll go to the Walmart app and get the same three items:

a gallon of whole milk

a 4 pound bag of oranges

A pound of butter.

This is the price for my local Walmart

This is the price of the same items in Wasilla, Alaska.

Now, I don’t know if that’s a super fair comparison. Wasilla is in the Mat-su Valley, which is one of the most populated areas in Alaska.

Let’s looks at Utqiagvik (formerly Barrow) which is where the Inupiaq (or Inupiat) people have lived for over 4,000 years. This is the group that The Anonymous person and @systlin were talking about, that relies heavily on hunting, particularly hunting whales, to survive.

If the Inupiaq people decided they wanted to stop hunting and hit up the local grocery store. There’s only two larger stores in Utqiagvik, Stuaqpak and Alaska Commercial Company. Stuaqpak doesn’t have any prices listed online, so I’m going to use Alaska Commercial Co. as our store to shop at. We have to make a few adjustments here, to get the same amount of the same items, but we got them nonetheless. So let me break this down for you.

A Gallon of Whole Milk: Milk is only sold in 32 oz Cartons at this store, and they only have 1 brand to buy, which is sold for $6.19 per carton. To get a gallon of whole milk, you have to buy 4 32 oz cartons of boxed milk, which makes a gallon of whole milk $24.76.

A pound of butter: Luckily, they do sell butter in the normal 32 oz (1 pound) boxes. Those are $7.29 per box for a generic brand.

Lastly, is the 4lbs bag of Oranges. They only sold oranges in 5lbs bags for $19.99 each, 3lbs bags for $11.99 each, or by the pound for $2.29 per pound. I went with the per pound option, because it was the cheapest option and I wanted to save some money. This put me at $9.16 for 4lbs of oranges.

This is how much it would cost to get those same products in Utqiagvik, Alaska.

$46.21. That’s how much someone in Utqiagvik would have to pay for three basic items. When people say that the Inupiaq people should stop hunting, I don’t think they understand the cost of that. If they don’t hunt, they won’t be able to eat. The Inupiaq people hunt to survive in one of the harshest environments in the world. They use every bit of the animals they kill, because all of it has use. You need hides for clothes and shelter, the blubber from a whale is used to make fuel for fires, soap, and wax for candles. Whale bones are used to make special hooks for fishing nets, and the meat from a whale can feed people for a very long time. It also provides income if they sell the ambergris alone, which is still used for expensive perfumes. If the Inupiaq stopped hunting, they’d lose all of that, and would most likely die a cold, miserable death before their farm supplies would even arrive.

As an Indigenous person, millitant vegans drive me nuts, especially in their trying to stop seal hunts/whaling up north. Like, okay, I just wanna lock one of these fuckers in a freezer with a 20$ bill, a cell phone with no signal, and a piece of seal meat and see how long they last. And the soonest they can get a head of lettuce is 6 weeks from now, for 38$.

I've legit seen the argument that indigenous people in the far north should go to growing crops and i'm like

listen maybe I just miss mountains that were friends. I miss mountains I knew the names of; mountains that HAD names at all. I miss Denali, Hunter, and Foraker. I miss Pioneer Peak and Twin Peaks. I miss landmarks and formations that I could recognize on sight: Long Lake, the Susitna River, Hatcher's Pass. I have to tell you, I hate not knowing what anything is anymore. I hate having to constantly wonder, does anything have a name? or is it just me? am I the only thing around me with a name?

(or maybe just. disconcerting idk) that stretch of road going past Long Lake on your way out of the Mat-Su valley, where the road is basically along a cliff face with a VERY STEEP drop down to Long Lake and there's NO FREAKING GUARDRAIL. i have nightmares about that road.

you know, I'm not sure how recently I've been on that road, so I don't have any distinct memories of it, but you're right that it sounds hella intimidating. kind of weird that the state hasn't at least installed guardrails, honestly.
