Alandra Pereira Masvidal

Alandra Pereira Masvidal, born 21 December 1999, is a Brazilian Formula 1 racing driver who races under the number 13 and credits sponsorship in Aryton Senna’s name for supporting her leap into Formula 1. Masvidal first got her start in Formula 1 under Alfa Romeo Racing Ferrari in 2021 alongside 2007’s World Driver Champion Kimi Raikkonen. Masvidal would then make the move to Alpine Renault for the 2022 Formula 1 season before moving, again, to Aston Martin Aramco for the 2023 season which looks to be a continued partnership for the 2024 Formula 1 season. 

Masvidal is often credited for making Formula 1 more accessible for young women, as seen when she and Haas’ Laila Borelli endorsed the F1 Academy efforts. Masvidal, while noteworthy for her involvement, is also known to have somewhat of a media temper and has made a habit of biting back at journalists or other media personnel in debriefs and post-race interviews alike. 

Masvidal is known to be seen with Charles Leclerc, Laila Borelli, Max Verstappen, and a few others in free moments in the paddock. Masvidal has a total of 8 podiums with her highest finish being 2nd (3x). Masvidal has yet to achieve any pole positions in her career. Masvidal is the third youngest Brazilian driver to be entered in a Formula 1 Grand Prix. 

Masvidal’s first season in Formula 1 was driven with Alfa Romeo Racing Ferrari. Her partnership with Alfa Romeo would end in 2021 despite out-qualifying her WDC teammate 13:7. Masvidal achieved her first point in Monaco with a 10th-place place finish. She would then set her personal best in Formula 1 at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix with a 9th-place finish. Masvidal would end 18th in the Championship with only three points. 

In the 2022 season, Masvidal signed with Alpine Renault along with teammate Esteban Ocon. Masvidal would then equal her personal best finish at this point in the opening race of the season at Bahrain. Masvidal would continue to prove her mettle with consistent points in races like Monaco before achieving a new record of 5th in Silverstone which she would repeat in Belgium and again in her home race at Brazil. Masvidal finished the 2022 season outqualifying her teammate, again, this time 12:10, despite having equal race results (8:8). Masvidal would end the season 9th in the Championship with 81 points. 

Following the upheaval caused by Alpine signing Oscar Piastri before notifying Alandra Masvidal of her contract release, Masvidal would find a last-minute seat with Aston Martin Aramco Mercedes. Despite Piastri’s legal dispute over the claim he would race for Alpine, Masvidal was not invited back to race with Alpine and was instead replaced by Pierre Gasly. 2023’s rookies included the second woman on the grid in the form of Laila Borelli for Haas Ferrari with Oscar Piastri at McLaren and Logan Sargeant at Williams Racing rounding out the rookie crew. Masvidal would go on to make Alpine regret their decision to replace her as she achieved not only her first podium but eight podiums throughout the season. Masvidal proved herself a consistent sight on the podium and in the points and finally completed the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix after the previous two DNFs. Masvidal, for the third time in as many seasons, outqualified her teammate, Lance Stroll, 19:3 and outraced 14:2. Masvidal ended the Championship with 206 points tied for fourth place with, ironically, her partner Charles Leclerc. 

Masvidal has decided to continue racing for Aston Martin for the 2024 season beginning in Bahrain on 2 March 2024. Aston Martin’s driver lineup contains no changes and will round out with Alandra Masvidal and Lance Stroll.

Right-wing media have amplified conspiracy theories and bigotry from Ultimate Fighting Championship figures including UFC President Dana White and a number of high-profile fighters.  In doing so, these media platforms have mirrored former President Donald Trump's efforts to use the prizefighting league to boost his 2024 campaign. They’ve also provided a megaphone for White and his current and former fighters — some of whom have expressed support for QAnon and claimed the U.S. government orchestrates mass shootings — to espouse racism, anti-LGBTQ bigotry, false claims of election fraud, and a claim that Pfizer-sponsored athletes are “taking handouts from the devil.” 

UFC fighters have delved into right-wing politics and fringe conspiracy theories like QAnon, finding allies in conservative media

An MMA journalist noted that a number of UFC fighters have repeatedly used their public platforms to court conservative fans and endorse extreme right-wing conspiracy theories, including QAnon. MMA journalist Karim Zidan has reported that dozens of MMA figures have embraced fringe beliefs like QAnon, COVID-19 conspiracy theories, mass shooting denialism, and even 9/11 trutherism. He has written: “MMA's embrace of outsider sports fans and right-wing politicians has helped create a wave of athletes activating around extremist causes and conspiracies.” [Bloody Elbow, 9/15/20; Global Sport Matters, 10/20/22]

Former President Donald Trump employed endorsements from UFC fighters in the 2020 election and now sees the organization as a major component of his 2024 campaign, as his team hopes to target “young male audiences with little interest in politics.” During the 2020 election cycle, a number of fighters endorsed Trump and joined campaign events like the Trump Jr.-led “Fighters Against Socialism” bus tour; the former president’s 2024 campaign is now doubling down on this strategy, which Trump aides say “puts him in front of potential voters who may not closely follow politics or engage with traditional news sources.” [Politico, 10/29/20; The Guardian, 8/5/23; The Associated Press, 12/15/23]

Right-wing media have previously defended bigoted commentary from UFC fighters, even backing middleweight Sean Strickland after he described being transgender as “a mental fucking illness” and suggested he would have “failed as a man” if he reared a gay son. A number of right-wing figures, including podcaster Steve Bannon and white nationalist Nick Fuentes, also championed UFC star Conor McGregor after his anti-immigrant commentary came under investigation by Irish authorities last year; Fuentes notably told McGregor to “rise up” because “it’s either going to be the Irish or it’s going to be the blacks. Outside of direct interviews with these fighters and figures, some right-wing media have attempted to harness what Bannon’s War Room called “one of the last patriotic sports left” for political gain. Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk, for example, has advocated for the Republican Party to embrace “the alpha male culture of Joe Rogan, Dana White, and the UFC” in order to “win over millions of other voters,” even suggesting he would contact White in an effort to “get voter registration and ballot chasing at every one of these UFC fights.” [Bloody Elbow, 4/14/21; Real America’s Voice, The Charlie Kirk Show, 7/10/23, 6/3/24]

UFC President Dana White is a Trump ally and donor who has repeatedly used the organization to benefit the former president’s political ambitions. Besides directly endorsing Trump at the 2020 Republican National Convention, Karim Zidan reported in September 2020 that “White, along with a select group of UFC fighter[s],” had “spent the last few months advocating for the incumbent president in an attempt to ensure his re-election. The UFC continues to be a bastion of right-wing extremism, conspiracy theories, and bigotry. Dana White, Joe Rogan, and co. set the tone for that style.
