Chapter 4 - I Won’t Go Where You Can’t Follow

“Gale…I,” he started, but Gale cuts him off.

“No, Bucky, I know you’re hurtin’. I know it. I see it. I…,” he takes a breath, gathering himself. “You’re my best friend, John. If I thought we could escape – and live – I’d leave with you tonight. I need you, and I need you alive. I’ll take you however I can get you, even if that means you need to blame me for where your feet are. I always thought you were different than my Pa. You both beat me…” he trails off.

Bucky’s eyes widen in shock.

“He beat me with his hands, but you do it with your words.” Gale paused before continuing. “But honestly…the pain feels the same.”

Gale blinked hard and Bucky could see the tears shining in his eyes as he turned to walk away.

Ok but this Gale and this Bucky 🥹

I needed at least 3 reruns of MotA to distinguish all the supporting roles from each other; didn't really help that they wore masks for a big part of the flights...😁 But I watch movies and series I like several times as a rule and you see more of the finer details and maybe see a character in a different light the more often you watch.

I know that a lot of people wish they could go back and experience their favorite shows for the first time ever again, but I feel the complete opposite about the pacific (plus bob and mota but the pacific inspired this post). The first time you watch it you have little to no idea what is going on besides now they're in a gun fight and now they're resting and whoops now they are fighting again. You lose a lot of subtleties and even whole story beats because you have no idea who anyone is.

for example, when i first saw oswalt die all i thought was "who is that?" i just thought he was some random background character that dies for shock value. But, rewatching, i notice that he has a very good chunk of dialogue which definitely makes his death hit so much harder. it feels like watching the scene in an entirely new, more poignant light. this sort of thing goes for every character besides maybe the main ones. I mean, jay de l'eau has an entire breakdown and i STILL didnt recognize him on my first watch in the next scene when he ran away from the soldier in the cave!

tldr: the pacific and other adjacent hbowar shows only get better and better with each rewatch since you actually know what character is which
