Have some Super God Masterforce screenshots!
Tumblr media
Man, I wanna be their third.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's nice to get to see more of Phoenix's personality. He's been the least present of the four Pretenders.
Tumblr media
I think this was from Overlord's first actual appearance in the show.
Tumblr media
I just love that they have the little rain guy hanging from their umbrella.
Tumblr media
I found this an interesting sentiment from Overlord. It does make me wonder about a more direct translation from this scene?
Tumblr media
Metalhawk can be a real good big brother/surrogate father figure! 😭 Look at the way Minerva is hugging him and he has a hand on her to reassure her!
Tumblr media
Honestly, Nick Roche giving Overlord the most kissable lips is really just following the spirit of the original.
Tumblr media
This is perhaps one of the most terrifying images of Overlord to exist. (And there's BlackZarak.)

I've seen enough “Overlord being a super-violent-for-the-sake-of-it Megatron fangirl” bring back “Overlord who is caring and parental but is still an unequivocally evil living WMD”

My Transformers writing metas of characters who a lot could be done with continues with a character that actually did get a lot of attention in the previous comic run with IDW, but did so as essentially an original character, since IDW, as we've previously established, did not like human characters or Japanese concepts. That being said, there's probably a lot you can do with the character in the new Energon Universe.
Tumblr media
Overlord in Transformers Masterforce is the ultimate weapon of the two leaders of the Decepticons on Earth, the humans Giga and Mega. A Double Godmaster (namely a Godmaster that requires two Godmaster engines to function) Overlord beat Ginrai to within an inch of his life the first time they fought, forcing the Autobots to create the God Ginrai powerups to actually have any hope of fighting him on equal footing. It's actually interesting because a human mastermind (or two in this case, the husband and wife team) stepping onto the field with a Decepticon that made Megatron look lightly armed was a turning point for the conflict in the series.
For what it's worth, while it's not outright said, the Overlord in the Earth Wars gatcha game is implied to be this version, not the IDW version.
Tumblr media
IDW chose to dismiss the human connections in favor of a Cybertronian who was a combat-loving warlord without any Godmaster/Powermaster abilities or human control. He's essentially a Caligula figure, happy to kill people for sport in his arenas and proclaim his own glory without any care for the people he hurts or the other Decepticons who are shown to barely stand the guy. Overlord's portrayal in the IDW series is often considered a highlight to show the cruelty that the Decepticon ranks create.
There's also his appearance in Power of the Primes, but that was widely considered a dumpster fire of a production with the writers, Machinima, having gone out of business years ago. I'm sensing a pattern with the writers Hasbro hires for their adult animation takes on the franchise.
Anyway, with a character that has had two very distinct portrayals, with more recent work trying to get away from the latter portrayal, there's definitely a lot Skybound could do with him, although much of it may not be feasible till a few years down the road -
Overlord, Decepticon Powermaster looking for a vestigal empire:
If the writers are a fan of the IDW portrayal but don't want to completely abandon the Powermaster/Godmaster concept, the best idea may be to have Overlord be someone seeking human or even alien aid to increase his own power. Cybertron has been shown to be in a pretty sorry state, but there's nothing to say that he couldn't have started his own empire somewhere else. This keeps Overlord as his own bot, and allows him to still have the Powermaster trappings of human partners while still keeping the Caligula trappings of IDW of someone who could have ran Cybertron instead of Shockwave, but was more concerned with personal power and fighting strong opponents than any sort of formal authority. This also leaves a lot of ideas for new characters that could bounce off of him.
2. Overlord: Transector of SKAR:
Now that the Energon Universe has somehow, against all odds, gotten people excited about Cobra-La of all things, it may not be long before in an attempt to further differentiate itself from Larry Hama's original GI Joe comics, begin digging for other ideas that have been declared unusable. And when it comes to GI Joe ideas that aren't looked upon fondly, even more so than Cobra-La, there's SKAR, the main villains of...GI Joe Extreme.
youtube
Yes, this was real. Season 3 was even going to connect it to the original series with SKAR being revealed as a front for Cobra, with Iron Klaw set to butt heads with Cobra Commander before the show got canceled.
If you were going to go the "Overlord is a Transector" route, rather than have Giga and Mega on their own, considering that the Decepticons will still be around, it may be worth it to mine the existing characters they have and adapt them to the concept. So in this case, the function of Giga and Mega as masterminds overseeing a conflict until Overlord allows them to go directly into battle could easily be filled by SKAR's two leaders, Iron Klaw/Count Von Raimi, and his second in command, Steel Raven.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Funny enough, they seem like they could take the roles of Giga and Mega quite easily from a visual standpoint.
Tumblr media
So I think the ultimate question concerning Overlord and how he gets portrayed boils down to one question. Is he his own character or is he a proxy for others? Either one could be used here while heavily involving human characters in a way IDW didn't. But this is just my looking at a concept in the Powermasters I feel deserves a chance to shine.

Character breakdown; Overlord
Character Breakdown:
How I feel about this character: I love his mocking attitude in IDW, but I also love how serious and commanding he is in Super God Masterforce. If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend it, but I'd start with the Headmasters cartoon since it came first.
All the people I ship romantically with this character: Himself. I'm a fan of the Masterforce iteration where he's a duocon made up of a husband and wife team. He gives me Garnet vibes but as an evil human combiner duo trying to help an evil orb take over the planet. I even made designs for their individual transtectors in mech form once, which I'll probably redo at some point on my art blog. If that's something you're interested in, just give me a holler.
My non-romantic OTP for this character: I don't think he has many friends since he's an asshole and all his close connections were cut off for a mirad of reasons, but in my AU he was friends with Double Punch while they were in the gladiatorial arena in Kaon together. They were both top champions for a long while.
My unpopular opinion about this character: He should be two people more often. I think it adds an interesting element to his character, and I would be interested in seeing him be revealed to be a combiner duo later on after being introduced to his character. It would explain a lot of things about him, like why he was so hard to beat, and why he's such a mysterious powerhouse to others.
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: I wanted to see more of his gladiator days. It's supposedly where he got his hatred for failure in IDW1, because Megatron kicked his ass and he's had a fear of losing ever since. I think seeing what kind of a person he was before Megatron would give a better sense of how he changed over time. We know he was forged on Luna 2, but other than that, what was his function? What job did he have? How did he end up in the arena? I have a whole backstory written for him if anyone's interested.

Why does Weiss from Dirge of Cerberus/Intergrade reminded me of Overlord from Transformers when Talking about Stuff like "Garroted and Impaled"??
(i'd like to read the wreckers comic again)

actually wait fivemind tf au being based off the masterforce continuity makes sense because masterforce was essentially a henshin hero show
fivemind transformers au set in the jp g1 continuity, somewhere in between masterforce and victory...i can kinda see them being one of them transtectors that was given sapience kinda to parallel the rebirth aspect of their mainverse (in the process they may have killed their own headmaster tho)

The Trigger collab animation came out and it’s the best thing Transformers has done in the current decade.
Truly a love letter to Transformers from G1 to EarthSpark, it squeezes in everything it possibly can from most media. However the catch is that it’s only animated media and the live action movies, the comics (any assorted manga, Marvel, Dreamwave, IDW & Skybound) aren’t referenced, while some Japanese exclusive stuff gets a lil’ bit more attention (understandable since it’s, y’know, Japanese fans being nostalgic about the anime they grew up with).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Transformers Go, Q-Transformers, and the Beast Wars anime got particular attention.
Tumblr media
This shot of Liger Megatron and Green Lion Lio Convoy is especially cool.
I think initially I was expecting a Trigger animated greatest hits from select moments from each show, and while they still technically do that in spots…
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It’s mostly a mega crossover with different characters interacting otherwise.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And it’s all the better for it.
I mean where else are you gonna find TFA Optimus about to smash Masterforce Overlord’s face in?
Tumblr media
There’s no real narrative, it’s just random cool shots though the closest thing to a framing device is the PV opening with Vector Prime looking down on Cybertron across all time lines.
Regarding EarthSpark’s contributions to the short, they’re minimal. The Terrans and Mandroid don’t appear at all, which is a little bizarre.
ES Megatron appears among the other Decepticon leaders instead of being with ES Optimus on the Autobot leader side.
Tumblr media
You’d think Mandroid would be there next to BWII Galvatron instead, but I guess not. Sadly they omitted RiD15 Steeljaw too, instead using RiD15 Megatronus Prime’s floating head.
SatAM Robotnik voice: Ah well, life is not perfect.
The main ES rep are the Maltos.
Tumblr media
This just reinforces ES needed to be 2D, because they actually look good. Roche’s style doesn’t work in 3D.
Anyway the human cast they chose for this final shot amuses me.
Tumblr media
Love seeing my favorite Clays being included. The lack of RiD Steeljaw (G1 Steeljaw did appear with Lio Junior and RiD15 Aerobolt though) is forgiven.
Anyhow, the specific use of the Clays, the (S3) Witwickys, the Maltos and the Onishis (this is especially funny since Koji’s mom never met her universe’s Optimus) is somehow very random, but also kinda appropriate. Like I get Spike and Dot’s families, since it serves as bookends, but the Clays and Onishis still feel a bit random. Still, including both Robots in Disguise families is a nice touch in my book!
The short ends with a different bookend as mentioned.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
What starts out as G1 Prime & Megs transitions to ES Prime & Megs shaking hands. The old with the current series. It works~! I admit I’m surprised they didn’t include TFONE somehow. I know it’s technically not out yet, but there’s enough material to have had Orion and D-16 have some kind of tussle. It would’ve been an interesting way to tie it into the above scene and this one:
Tumblr media
When it comes to general rep, the stuff that gets the most focus is G1, Beast Wars, Animated, & Galaxy Force. Cyberverse doesn’t really get anything beyond the leader shot, but there is this awesome but very random shot of Croaton over looking Holi’s Rescue Patrol walking on a beach littered with the dead bodies of the generic Decepticons from “War Dawn”.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sucks to be you guys.
It also occurs to me the Rescue Bots cartoons appear to be omitted along with BotBots, but that might partly be due to them not having Japanese releases? I’m not sure, but it’s funny how Q-Transformers is acknowledged of all things, but not Heatwave or Burgertron. Maaaaybe that’s for the best on the later…
Still the PV is a blast and is pry the most earnest passion project that GETS Transformers vs what we’ve been getting post Aligned cartoon wise.
I still hope this leads to a proper TF anime series made by Trigger, like what happened with Gridman. We need a return to good 2D animated TF shows and not more CGI slop like WFC or S2 ES. That Beast Wars and Machines are still superior despite being retro by today’s standards says something…
The catch however is the original video is region locked…
Tumblr media
but some fans have ripped it and posted it on their YT:
youtube
So go check it out while you can! It’s pure Energon-y goodness!
