"Ice" episode: Mulder's hand on Scully's back was a bit "boyfriendish" and protective. The moment is tense and Scully is looking at Da Silva with concern as if there is concern that Bear might be unsafe. There is the tension of 2 men going up against each other. Scully moves in closer to Da Silva to have the women centered in the scene facing each other as if it's the women against the men. Essentially, the set-up is that each woman has a man to back them up, but it's Mulder who essentially comforts Scully and also says "I'm her peotector". But, Dr. Berkeley doesn't come back to protect his partner or provide comfort.
Did Da Silva kill Murphy and out him in the fridge? Did we ever get that resolution. Or are we to make the assumption because she had the worm. She hadn't been acting aggressively before. OR, did Murphy know something was wrong and went into the freezer to protect the others?
This episode is quite tense between Mulder and Scully beyond the closet touching one another scene. One of the first scenes where they are working on a table has Mulder stand next to Scully and resist placing his hand on her. The "good night" to one another after a tense argument is fire. Mulder and Scully's argument vs DaSilva's and Berkley's argument is also an interesting contrast.
Someone else has already mentioned that Scully caresses Mulder's hand instead of soothing Da Silva when she is held down to insert the worm in her ear.
It's a great episode and can see how an audience would have been hooked to find this gem of a show in the beginning. However, this was at the beginning of the show so what was going on? Would they have been allowed to add in their character? Was this intensity just 2 actors trying hard or letting themselves and personalities come thru? Was the hand blooper just a blooper or left in for another reason?
I like that this episode is mostly set in a tight space. It is controlled. Just a tiny bit- reminds me of Hitchcock's "Rope" because of its limited scene, intensity of story line, and we get the "thriller" from the acting.
I don't think we ever had a conclusive ending for Murphy. Pretty sure he was murdered; which means I'm pretty sure Da Silva had to face some sort of punishment. Perhaps it was lightened by her imbalanced state of mind?
If I recall, there's a moment where Berkley(?) rubs DaSilva's shoulder to comfort her (I think when Mulder and Scully were tackling Bear; or around then.) So, yeah, they were definitely set up to contrast Mulder and Scully, professionally and wink wink, nudge nudge.
Gonna keep an eye out for that hand massage moment the next time I see a gif set floating around. It was likely a Gillian mistake, but the possibilities for Scully's character exploration are right there.
This was definitely an episode gem: you can tell a ton of elbow grease went into the script and execution. It hooked me-- I went from Squeeze to Ice to Fire, then doubled back to watch the whole season through. :DDDDD It was my The Thing before I saw The Thing (yes, I am a pop/mainstream culture noob.)
DD and GA were probably still learning the acting ropes; but they were also, in my opinion, more clearly Mulder and Scully here. Both of them (and the crew and cast) probably put a lot of work into getting these scenes right.
#asks#anon#Ice#S1#interesting#definitely going to keep an eye out for the caress#probably a mistake by GA#but it's a nice thought that Scully would already be so in tune with Mulder and his limits/struggles#xf meta#thoughts#thanks for droppin in!

So Much Relies On An Open Door, Or Window
My mother cried on the phone last night—it seems that everything I do will make her cry these days. I made a reservation for a restaurant as a surprise for my parents' wedding anniversary and she reports that she was too stunned to speak for five minutes, surrounded by the table candles, the pretty bathroom, the flowers. She said she always walked past it, wondering what was inside, but never venturing in—I am happy to hear this. She texts me this morning, Sorry for crying so much yesterday. I was really moved. I say it's okay as long as she was happy. These days, I would do anything to make anyone happy.
Today, I brewed a pot of genmai-cha in the new Kinto One-Touch. I am excited to be able to make tea on the daily. My life seems to lack a form of meditation now that the somber glow of smoking cigarettes or drinking a glass of wine is mostly flickered-out. I am looking for a ritual that will ease me. The tea is a gift from my parents from when they traveled to Japan last summer—it bloomed a vibrant shade of green in the beginning and now the pieces of roasted rice are plump and soft. I am listening to The Velvet Underground and thinking of my old morning shift at the radio station, leaning back in the ugly green swivel chair and closing my eyes while Lou Reed's crooning voice massaged my ears through the heavy-duty headphones. "Massaging" is a funny word, but it's the perfect one for this moment of quiet—it feels like the whole world is dead and you're sending music out to an unidentifiable audience, a cranium of dark. I don't know if anyone's out there, if anyone is listening, if anyone cares, and that's okay.
This sounds like I'm waxing poetic. I apologize.
---
I am thinking about the title of my next chapbook. I realized that all of them, up to date, have been two words exactly. I want to move away from this trend. I am thinking about the Serbian-American poet, Charles Simic, (fun fact: he was co-editor of the poetry section of The Paris Review)—his collection The World Doesn't End (1989)—more specifically, the poem "My Secret Identity Is":
The room is empty,
And the window is open
Very short. But lately I've been thinking about the best form of identification for myself—I have settled on "half-open window". Seems like I've always been a little obsessed with the concept of a window—for example, the forward of Angel Dwellings talks about eyes as the window to the soul—know that mine...are like a still pond in spring. Windows as having the quality of frankness, clarity and to be open means a form of welcoming. But I don't think I'll ever be a fully-open window, to be perfectly honest. I'm still working my way up to that. I like to think of the lack of punctuation in the last line as a concept of potentiality, room for growth—it's like the window is open, open still.
So the working title of the new chapbook is THE VIEW FROM A HALF-OPEN WINDOW. This is because of my self-identification as the window, so this is a collection of my observations, hence "the view from". And at the same time, I hope to bestow these images onto you, so that you may see and understand for yourself—hence, the title --> you, my reader, standing at the window, looking out. Hopefully, this makes sense. It is still very much amateur-ish work, but I am dedicated to it.
---
I still think about Louise Glück, what it would've felt like to have her as an instructor. For those who don't know, she was supposed to teach a poetry workshop at UC Berkeley for Spring 2024, my last semester of college. When I heard that Glück was teaching, I bent my head over my desk for weeks while I cranked out a short manuscript—the workshop was competitive and the applications called for things like manuscripts and essays. Part of me felt guilty that one reason why I was so gung ho about applying was because Glück was so popular, a name on coffee tables and dusty bookshelves. I didn't even finish reading The Wild Iris. I am selfish in that I want my work to be read by someone important, I want to be known. A few days later, her name was taken off the course site—a week later, the news broke out that Glück had passed on October 13, 2023. I thought of the email she sent in 2017 to one of her students, GennaRose Nethercott:
Writing is as painful as life. I feel that even after decades. Doesn't get easier, which surprised me... And then there are the miraculous times when fluency is effortless. Or even the times of just being absorbed deeply... I regret being unable to occupy that state constantly but to be there at all seems a marvel beyond all others
See you in spring
I like the way she ended the email. See you + time. Maybe I should use that more often, over "Best" or "Regards" or "Love". Leaves a sense of expectation—like I will be there. An RSVP for the future, a promise to meet again

After Wolf had fallen into a fitful, restful sleep, Snow finally washed off all the blood.
Ting-Ting had let her use her shower. As soon as she'd stripped and stepped inside it, Snow had fallen to her knees and let the water pour over her, let it massage her neck and turn her hair into thick, heavy curtains. She watched as the water ran red and dirty. At one point, she thought how very weird it was that she couldn't tell Wolf's blood from John's. Here in the aftermath, it was all the same.
She let the water take it all, until the water was clean. But Snow didn't feel clean. She was certain the blood had found a way to seep inside her through all of her most delicate cracks. It would take the river to sweep it away.
But she turned off Ting-Ting's shower and climbed out anyway.
Ting-Ting had given her sweat pants and a Berkeley shirt to change into (it was one that Snow recognized-- a shirt she'd left behind, probably forgotten in the bottom drawer of her dresser in her childhood bedroom). She put it all on and glanced in the mirror, glimpsing a younger, hungover version of herself from a different lifetime. Except for the bruise rapidly forming on her throat, Snow could have been that girl.
She came back downstairs to Ting-Ting making tea.
"I'm so sorry," were the first words out of Snow's mouth, as water dripped off her hair onto the kitchen floor.
