#VoxPop The long-running radio quiz program Vox Pop broadcast from theaters throughout the United States. These theaters frequently announced the Vox Pop appearance on their marquees.
On December 3, 1946, Vox Pop broadcast from the Cleveland Masonic Temple in Cleveland, Ohio, to interview members of the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartet Singing in America (SPEBSQSA). Here, audience members are shown passing under a banner announcing the show as they enter the building.
Designed by the Cleveland architectural firm Hubbell & Benes, the Masonic Temple opened in 1921 at 3615 Euclid Ave in Cleveland. It featured a 2,000-seat auditorium that hosted Masonic activities as well as movie screenings, concerts, and theatrical performances. In 2001, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Cleveland Masonic Temple continues to host concerts and performances: https://www.templelive.com/cleveland

[TOUR] King Diamond announces North American dates with Overkill

For the first time in five years, metal legend King Diamond is hitting the road, embarking on a 35-date North American tour aptly titled Saint Lucifer’s Hospital 1920.
Set in a 1920s mental institution, the brand new stage show is based on The Institute, King Diamond’s forthcoming double LP in 2025, and promises to be the Mercyful Fate frontman’s most elaborate production to date. The new music tells a horror concept story, and the accompanying onstage visuals are guaranteed to rock and shock in equal measure.
“We have been busy putting this ever-growing horror story together, and it’s still growing,” said King Diamond in a statement. “I know the end of it, but how we will get there will be a long trip. There are so many characters, and so many unexpected things along this journey.
“There will be some horrific surprises taking place on stage, but we are not to be held responsible since we are on a whole different timeline in 1920. It was back at the time when medicine was going through a dark period with lots of testing on human beings in order to progress medicine. This is Saint Lucifer’s Hospital, also known as The Institute, enter if you dare!”
Joining the King are New Jersey thrashers Overkill and Ventura, California power trio Night Demon. Additionally, Danish solo black metal artist Myrkur will provide backing vocals and play the organ on select songs throughout the night

Jacob Goldsmith House Site
2200 E. 40th St.
Cleveland, OHHHH
Open land on the western side of the 2200 block of E. Fortieth Street in Cleveland, Ohio, was formerly the site of the Jacob Goldsmith House, which was built on a scale comparable to that of the mansions that once lined Euclid Ave. The building has been attributed to Cuddell and Richardson, architects. This mansion, considered a "superb example of Eastlake style architecture," had a polychromed exterior of brick and stone. The house was built for Jacob Goldsmith, who lived there until just after the turn of the century. He was a leading clothing merchant and the firm he headed eventually evolved into the Joseph and Feiss Co.
By 1908 the house had been turned over to institutional use, housing the Jewish Infants Orphan Home, which provided shelter and care for homeless, primarily preschool, children. At this time an auditorium was added at the southwestern corner of the building. Not long after, however, The Orphan Home was later absorbed by the Welfare Assn. for Jewish Children. It was not until 1923 that the house became the headquarters of the Cleveland branch of the Universal Negro Improvement Association. From 1923 on, 2200 East 40th Street was the home of the UNIA Division 59 and later Division 133. That organization had been founded in 1911 by Marcus Garvey, a black nationalist and businessman.
In later years the Cleveland branch of the UNIA was headed by Mason A. Hargrave. Hargrave fought to keep the building from being demolished, and led an attempt to restore the building and convert it into a African American cultural and community center. It was listed with the National Register of Historic Places on March 8, 1978. The house was severely damaged by an arson fire in Nov. 1988. The following month, Hargrave died, and in Jan. 1989 the Goldsmith House was demolished. Although destroyed, it has not yet been removed from the Register.

Queen live at Uris Theatre in New York, NY, USA - May 11, 1974
(x)

These shots of Sam Goody and the Uris Theatre in NYC around this time are from Super 8 footage shot by Mott The Hoople keyboardist Morgan Fisher (who would later play with Queen in 1982).
This is the sixth and final concert at the Uris Theatre, and the last time they would open for Mott The Hoople. During the encore of Mott's set, Queen joined them to provide backing vocals on All The Young Dudes.
Shortly thereafter, Brian May collapsed from pain. It turns out he had developed hepatitis from a tainted needle he received when the band got their required inoculations before going to Australia in February, and he had been in considerable pain throughout this tour. It soon developed into gangrene, and at one point there was a chance that his arm would have to be amputated. The band were forced to abandon the rest of the shows on the tour. Here's a newspaper article on the subject.
Many years later, Roger Taylor recalled the day: "Poor Brian was yellow, bright yellow, and I was amazed we managed to shepherd him through the immigration queue at JFK in New York. The poor fellow could hardly stand and we got him on the plane, got him home, and got him to hospital. He was very ill. We were devestated. The tour had been cut short, you know, cos it was our first trip to America, so there were mixed feelings about that, but also very worried about Brian on the other hand."
Here's the full list of shows with Mott The Hoople that were cancelled (including a couple Canadian dates):
1974.05.13 - Boston, MA, Orpheum Theatre (rescheduled from April 26)
1974.05.15 - Washington, D.C., DAR Constitution Hall
1974.05.16 - Charleston, SC, Municipal Auditorium
1974.05.17 - Atlanta, GA, Fox Theatre
1974.05.18 - Knoxville, TN, Coliseum
1974.05.20 - Detroit, MI, Masonic Temple
1974.05.21 - Chicago, IL, Auditorium Theatre
1974.05.22 - Milwaukee, WI, Auditorium
1974.05.23 - South Bend, IN, Morris Civic Auditorium
1974.05.24 - Toledo, OH, Sports Arena
1974.05.25 - Cleveland, OH, Allen Theatre (7pm and 10:30 shows)
1974.05.26 - Columbus, OH, Mershon Auditorium
1974.05.27 - Toronto, ON, Massey Hall
1974.05.28 - London, ON, London Arena
1974.05.30 - Pittsburgh, PA, Syria Mosque
1974.05.31 - Philadelphia, PA, Schubert Theatre
1974.06.01 - Philadelphia, PA, Schubert Theatre
1974.06.02 - Richmond, VA, The Mosque
The US prog rock band Kansas replaced Queen in the opening slot. At the show in Detroit on May 20 (just prior to the release of the first Kansas album), there was no announcement that a different band was opening up for Mott The Hoople. A fair portion of the crowd was there for Queen, so Kansas ended up playing to constant boos and shouts for Queen. After a song or two, one of the members of Kansas grabbed the mic to shout, "Queen's not here, so shut the fuck up and listen."
Furthermore, a double bill with Blue Oyster Cult at the Santa Monica Auditorium had even been booked for June 7. Nazareth filled in for Queen.
A proposed Queen tour of North America for September would also be postponed until the new year.
While recovering in hospital, Brian would write a few songs while the band worked in the studio on their next record. During this time, Brian was approached by the band Sparks to join them, which he declined. He was committed to Queen, although worried that they might let him go. Of course the thought didn't even cross their mind, as Brian was such a key element of their unique sound. After he regained his health he would join them to finish their third album, Sheer Heart Attack.

Cleveland Masonic Temple and Performing Arts Center
3615 Euclid Ave.
Cleveland, OH
The Cleveland Masonic Temple and Performing Arts Center at 3615 Euclid Avenue in Cleveland, Ohio, was completed in 1921. The original plans for a high-rise office building addition to the temple, however, were never implemented. Designed by Hubbell and Benes, architects, it contains 2 large organs (Austin opus 823 and a Wurlitzer Opus 793). The Masonic Auditorium was home to the Cleveland Orchestra for ten years prior to the opening of Severance Hall in 1931, and it continued to be used as the setting for most of the orchestra's recordings long thereafter as a result of its fine acoustics. The venue has been home to various other performing arts productions and live music events over the years. The building also is home to the Cleveland Masonic Library and Museum, as well as budding arts groups like Dancing Wheels (a wheelchair ballet group), RED: An Orchestra (an avant-garde ensemble) and The Singing Angels (a youth choir). It was listed with the National Register of Historic Places on August 17, 2001, and is still going strong today.
