Your House (new Sojourn song)
Sojourn Music (Louisville, Kentucky) presents a song inspired by the award-winning children’s book Thank You, Omu! (Oge Mora) and Luke 14:15 (“Blessed is the one who will eat at the feast in the kingdom of God”), “Your House” is an illustration of the banquet that awaits us.
Our acceptance of God’s holy invitation welcomes us into his kingdom, his presence, his house.
This song conveys the bright future for those overlooked and abandoned on earth. After living a life on the margins, Jesus Christ, the ultimate outcast, died outside of the city gate—a man rejected by his very own friends and put to death by his own people. And yet he rose from the dead, exalted! In doing so, he has bestowed upon the weak, the oppressed, and the abused the honor of a feast with him!
Belonging to God’s house will outlast being the outcast.
“All those who sow weeping will go out with songs of joy” (Psalm 126:6).

VERSE 1 Blessed are the ones who will eat at the feast In the Kingdom of God Blessed are the blind, they will finally see In the Kingdom of God Blessed are the poor, oppressed and abused Blessed are the weak, distressed and accused When you strike up the band CHORUS Your house will be full, the walls will shake With laughter and dance and praise Every sibling of all time and place Your house will be full with praise to the King Let all the redeemed come sing Every promise fulfilled as we wonder aloud The stones can stay silent The people will shout VERSE 2 Blessed are the ones who will eat at the feast In the Kingdom of God Blessed are the prisoners, they will be free In the Kingdom of God Blessed are the broken, frightened, ashamed Blessed are the slaves – you will shatter their chains When you say, “Come and dine” CHORUS Your house will be full, the walls will shake With laughter and dance and praise Every sibling of all time and place Your house will be full with praise to the King Let all the redeemed come sing // Every child who was ever without Every dialect joining the shout Every promise fulfilled as we wonder aloud // The stones can stay silent The people will shout

A humor halott - Sétáló Agyhalottak (2015)
A humor halott – Sétáló Agyhalottak (2015)

The Walking Deceased
THE WALKING DECEASED is the Scary Movie of the zombie genre, ripping on the biggest and best of zombie pop-culture, arguably the most crazed genre in the world. The story follows a group of survivors from all walks of the apocalypse – an idiotic Sheriff with definite coma-induced brain damage, his hardass son and a hobo with only a crossbow to stave off the walking dead, four squabbling friends…

Bible bashin and the Virgin Mary
Tuesday was the funniest day of my mission.  We went to Sister Oglesby's house in Sunnyside and she has her niece, Rotania, that is living with her.  We sat down and started chatting.  Rotania was saying the funniest things.
1. "I do NOT go to the southwest side. There's too many black people (she's black), I like it over here, there are some Asians (never seen any Asians in Sunnyside), white people (maybe 2), its just more diverse!"
2. Then there is this big tapestry of Jesus at the last supper with his disciples on the wall.  I’ll see if I can get a picture the next time we are there.  She says, "You see this tapestry. What many people don't know is that the Virgin Mary is sitting on Jesus right hand side.  See the V between her and Jesus! And see those men flirting all up on her. Yes, this tapestry is in good condition (looks like an average rug), she could sell it for millions, it should be in a museum in Europe somewhere, not just any museum....the holocaust museum or something." It was so funny!  I had a hard time not laughing.  Rotania wants to feed us this next week so I'm sure I’ll come up with some good stories again.
Then, we went to a park to use the porta potty and picture this.  I get out of the car and this black man is playing basketball by himself and as I'm taking a few steps toward the porta potty he stops and looks at me and then does the catholic cross across his chest just as I reach for the porta potty door.  haha, people think we're nuns out here.
THEN, we met this guy who is a mason.  He showed us all of his jewelry and I was AMAZED!  The symbols on his bling are the same symbols from the temple!   I'm super interested to know what the masons know.
We ended up stopping by the Boudreauxs house who are a less active family and their two kids aren't baptized.  When we went over, the mom just unloaded on us and said how she doesn't want to force religion on her kids, (who are only 9 and 11). So we are going to be teaching them a few times a week!  Hopefully it works out okay.  The boy has autism and is super hard to work with. Sheldon is getting baptized in 2 weeks.  He is super prepared.  It’s so fun to teach him because he will read through the pamphlet as we teach him and make sure he understands every word.  We taught about the temple and he says, "This pamphlet only hits the tip of the iceburg on temple sealings. Will you send me more information on it?" No one EVER says that.
For the past few weeks, Ive been trying to memorize where bible verses are that I can "bible bash" but not really because we aren't suppose to do that.....I just need to know my stuff to defend my religion. Ya know....   Anyway, it paid off because on Saturday night, we talked to this guy and he is super kind but he turned out to be a minister at a church.  It’s weird because everyone here recognizes that all churches interpret the bible differently but no one thinks that their way of interpreting it is wrong..... He started talking about the Holy Ghost and that if you have the Holy Ghost then you have the authority and that you get the Holy Ghost because it comes upon you like the wind (according to some bible verse). So I said, "Well, I have the Holy Ghost, does that mean I can baptize?"  He paused, I could tell he wanted to say no but that would ruin his point so he said Yes.  He says, "if someone wants to be baptized, are you going to wait to find someone else with authority?" We responded, yes, because God won’t recognize it. He says, (with a sly "gotcha" smile) "What if they die before they can be baptized?"  OOHH, OOOOHHH, PICK ME! PICK ME!---(That's what I said in my head) Then we started to talk about the temple.  I love it when I have the answer to things!  This church is sooooo true!  Everything makes sense and the more I learn of other religions....it’s just a greater testimony for the need of the restoration of Jesus Christ’s church and a prophet.  I wish this story ended well, and that he is getting baptized but he was being too stubborn.  Someday.
Much love,Courtney

Last Friday
Tumblr media
On Friday I attended a designer run of Significant Other. Holy smokes! This is the first designer run I’ve attended one of these as spectator rather than director in the last 25 years. As a director, I have always considered these runs excruciating.
Typically, they usually happen 10 days before tech. Typically, they are often the first time through the entire show. I would have my list of “to-dos,” usually dozens of items long. It includes things like:
Correct top of show timing
Set up Character A as more defensive in II, iii
Figure out why end of play is anticlimactic
Fix the following 198 staging moments…
Make sure no one sees this yet! MAYBE NOT EVER!
The room is full of people I respect seeing the barest, roughest outline of the show I am imagining. Admittedly, they are all there to work on specific problems: checking movement against their understanding of the set, rough plotting lighting areas, looking at actor movement for costume changes, etc. They are certainly not there as audience. And yet, I always panic while exposing such incomplete work. The room is not the same size. The viewing angles are dreadful. The scoring needs work. Etc., etc. Here’s a picture of director Keira Fromm suffering in my place right before the run started.
Tumblr media
But on Friday, freed from my usual egomaniacal paranoia, I was able to see how much of the play shines through. Obviously, there is plenty of work (and ample time) remaining for the actors and director to polish, but I did not appreciate how vivid the work would be at this stage.
The afternoon was sheer pleasure. The performers were alternately hilarious and heartbreaking. Keira Fromm’s staging is deft and has a keen feel for the alternating rhythms of the play. Similar to Bad Jews, the play focuses on dramatising a particular experience that I had never seen on stage. Where Harmon’s earlier hit Bad Jews was about the assimilation and identity challenges facing Millenial Jews, Significant Other is a show about the presumed joy of attending weddings and the real panic of loneliness as your closest friends partner off and leave you behind.
The first time I read the script, I immediately thought of one particular actor—Alex Weisman—for the lead role. I’d admired Alex’s work and open humanity on stage for years. What I didn’t realize until the run was how much Alex loved this character. He’s doing incredibly funny and compassionate work. He’s paired with (one of his real-life closest friends) Amanda Drinkall, last seen at Theater Wit in a Jeff-award winning performance in Last Train to Nibroc. She’s freaking luminous. Their moments on stage together (their last as Alex heads off to NY to be in Harry Potter in December) are insanely charming and painful. Cassidy Slaughter-Mason, Tiffany Oglesby and the rest of the cast had me hiccuping with laughter at various points.
Tumblr media
At the end of the designer run, I was sitting with tears in my eyes. Both kinds. You will be too. Believe me when I tell you that this is going to be one of those shining evenings in Chicago theater that people will be talking about all season. Seriously.
And that’s what I know after only two weeks of rehearsal and a single run-thru for the designers. I can’t wait to see the final form. I especially can’t wait to share it with you all.
And now I love designer runs.
