Masala Bonds – A New-fangled way of raising money
Tumblr media
A term which has recently gained momentum in the financial market is termed as Masala Bonds. They are the bonds issued outside India but denominated in Indian Rupees, rather than the local currency of that country. They are named after the Masala Spice, a mix of spices used in India. Unlike dollar bonds where the borrower takes the currency risk, masala bond investors have to bear the risk. The first Masala Bond was issued by the World Bank backed International Finance Corporation in November, 2014 when it raised Rupees 1000 crore bond to fund infrastructure projects in India. Later in August 2015 International Finance Corporation for the first time issued green masala bonds and raised Rupees 3.15 billion to be used for private sector investments that address climate change in India.
About Masala Bonds
“Masala Bond is a kind of financial instrument through which Indian entities can raise money from overseas Markets in rupee and not in foreign currency. Indian rupee denominated bonds issued in offshore Capital markets.”
Masala Bond is a kind of financial instrument through which Indian entities can raise money from overseas markets in the rupee and not foreign currency. These are Indian rupee denominated bonds issued in offshore capital markets. The rupee denominated bond is an attempt to shield issuers from currency risk and instead transfer the risk to investors buying these bonds. In a way Masala Bonds is a step to help internationalize the Indian rupee. Investors in these bonds however will have a clear understanding and view on the Indian rupee risks. Therefore, stable Indian currency would be key to the success of these bonds.
The currency risk in the Masala Bonds lies in the hands of investors thus the investor demands a currency risk premium on the coupon and hence borrowing cost for Indian corporates through this route would be slightly higher. However, it may still be cheaper if one considers the currency risk. Though raised in Indian currency, these bonds will be considered as part of foreign borrowing by Indian corporate and hence would have to follow the RBI norms in this regard. Under the automatic route, companies can raise as much as Rupees 50 billion per annum through Masala bonds.
Pricing of Masala Bonds
There are two critical factors for the success of such bond : (a) coupon rate and (b) liquidity of Indian currency. India is rated BBB- by global ratings agencies — a notch above junk rating. Sovereign rating will influence pricing of these bonds. HDFC, for example, had recently borrowed in the domestic market through a three-year bond at 8.35%. HDFC expects to fix a coupon rate at least 10 basis points lower than the domestic rate for the masala bonds. It was observed that Indian banks were borrowing US dollar-denominated loan at under 4% in later half of 2015. If HDFC were able to issue masala bonds at 8.25%, it would imply a currency risk premium of above 4% per annum. Overseas investors are yet to decide their preferred coupon rate for the Indian masala bonds. Generally, given the view on Indian currency, investors are expecting a higher coupon from the issuers, which may make these bonds costly for Indian borrowers. This is the main reason holding back issue of masala bonds. If US Fed increases interest rate, that would make Indian masala bonds less attractive.
Allowing Indian firms to raise rupee-denominated loan from overseas market is a step towards full convertibility of Indian currency and the Indian central bank is supportive of this experiment. Despite initial glitches on pricing, masala bonds have potential to raise $5 billion in next two years. British government is wooing masala bond issuers and would like to position London as the global hub for offshore rupee financing.
The success of masala bonds would demonstrate overseas investors’ confidence on Indian currency. In other words, successful issue of these bonds by Indian corporate would imply faith on country’s macroeconomic fundamentals and the central bank’s role in currency management.
Regulatory Regime for Masala Bonds
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has paved the way by permitting the issuance of rupee — denominated bonds as part of its Fourth bi-monthly Policy statement for the year 2015–16 on September 29, 2015. While the RBI pronounced on the issue from the perspective of foreign exchange regulation, particularly that governing external commercial borrowings (ECBs), several other issues…

Please think about why you don’t consider BAME British people or immigrants to be ‘really’ British, and why I might have included those food cultures on purpose.
Hey, I didn't mean to imply that they're not British. I am Indian myself, and I always believed that that the food had Indian roots, not European roots. The whole "thin ice" comment was mainly a joke based on my surprise, but I'm sorry if it offended anyone.
#i suppose it's along the same lines as me considering tex mex as having roots in mexican food despite not being exactly mexican ykno?#like yeah i can understand if tikka masala originated in britain then technically it is british#which is why after googling i was like 'ok yeah i guess'#but not being british means it definitely caught me by surprise when i found out it's quite popular there#actually I've been thinking about this and to add on:#define british food to me pls bc i don't actually know what is considered culturally british#if i were to make a dish inspired by indian cuisine i would market it here as indian food not american food#but america is a hodge podge of cultures and very few things are actually considered culturally american in this country#i had thought even in britain tikka masala would be considered indian food of a sort because it is heavily inspired by indian cultural food#just like we have the separation of chinese food indian food mexican food italian food french food etc. here#and even in some places there is separation between cultural international foods and 'american' international foods#like I've been to asian restaurants that label cultural foods on their menu vs for example 'american chinese food'#so to me tikka masala would be 'british indian food' and not solely british food because the indian part is still important there#anyways this became a bit of a ramble but at the end of the day#i understand that there is rampant anti-immigrant sentiment going around that is important to combat#but please don't drop in my inbox acting like i am immediately racist for having a modicum of disbelief#i really did not appreciate waking up to what felt like an attack on a monday morning#im sure you meant well and are probably tired of seeing actual racism in your notes#and as a child of immigrants i appreciate you sticking up for immigrants#esp since you may be one yourself idk#just please keep in mind that people do have different experiences and perspectives that aren't characterized the same as yours#because it did come off a little abrasive

King Baldwin iv x Time!traveler!reader
chapter 2
Chapter 1 | chapter 3
Tumblr media
You get up from your bed and sit on the floor cross-legged. “System, I have the ability to by clothes from you right? Can you show me a few of the clothes available at your store?”
Sadly Miss Y/n, when I meant you can buy clothes through me, I meant you can buy the fabrics only. It showed you a plethora of fabrics, ranging from cheap cotton to colourful silk.
Now this is annoying. You might have basic skills to stitch a button and all but making an entire dress from scratch? Yeah, that’s impossible. Not to mention tailoring machines don’t even exist. Now you have no choice but to buy from traders
When you began your mission the system gave you some money as an achievement for starting the main quest, which was more than enough to rent a room at the inn. But now that you have a place to sleep for some time you should probably start thinking about how to finish that small side quest you started.
After calculating the benefits and losses of the decision you’re about to make, you snap your fingers at the thrill of discovery and lean towards the screen. “System show me the food products you have available.” Within seconds it shows you all forms of food at the online shop. You scroll down a few times and find exactly what you’re looking for. Pepper, chilli powder, chat masala and many more spices were shown and you clicked buy, buy, buy on all of them. Considering the fact that most of the spices here weren’t even discovered in this timeline you have some faith that they will blow off in the market when you sell them.
I think I know what you’re gonna do to finish the side quest miss Y/n…
Last night
“Sadly this seems to be a bad time for you and your father to set up your shop madame.” The man held a cresset lamp, which illuminated the path while his wife helped you walk across.
“Why do you say so sir?” You’re confused. He seemed a bit hesitant to say this and signs his wife to reply.
“Many people in Jerusalem have been going sick. And it’s no ordinary sickness, no, people’s legs are getting swollen, they bleed at the slightest of injuries and the gums inside their mouth become tender to the point that their teeth start to fall off. Most doctors call it ‘The Barlow's disease’ or something along those lines but most of us just call it ‘The loosener of teeth’”
Yeesh that was a gruesome description. People here have less immunity as it is and something like this ain’t gonna help them much.
“Is it really that bad?” She nods a yes. “The sick have increased to a point where the king himself has taken notice. Although he has hired physicians from other lands to cure the sick, most of the people who have the sickness don’t have the money to visit them.” She sighs in defeat.
Wait a minute…Swollen gums? Falling teeth? Barlow's disease? You’ve studies about this before in history class, it’s scurvy! It affects people with a lack of Vitamin C in their diet that is, sailors and the poor. It can be cured simply by eating food which has the vitamin. A wave of relief washes you since you definitely won't be getting it.
“I don’t think it’ll be a problem anymore madame.” You smile softly while the screen shows a pop up.
Side quest unlocked! Cure all people in Jerusalem from Scurvy.
Present
The stall for your shop was quickly set up, partially because the last owner just left the shop as it is. Within some time, all the spices were neatly displayed. By looking at other shops it was easy to decorate your own and it’s safe to say, yours was the most organised. It was extravagant, but not extravagant enough to drive the common people away.
Good job Miss Y/n! I’ll help you in whatever way I can to make the mission easy for you. I’ll try my best to get a discount on the rates in my store so you won't have to spend too much money on this!
“Thank you screen, that’ll help a lot. Honestly I’m doing it mostly for the money I’ll get after completing the side quest.” You remark while the screen giggles with its emoticon mouth. “By the way, just refer to me as Y/n. Miss Y/n feels too formal. Talk to me casually! You’re the only person that connects me to my time anyway.” You dryly chuckle, looking at the containers sadly. Even now you’re mind is not able to comprehend the fact that you’re in the past. It’s still trying to convince you, you’re in a foreign rural village.
“Excuse me.” you look at the young girl standing in front of your shop. “Do you have any pepper available?” So cute! She has such chubby cheeks too!
But immediately you notice her teeth. They look like as if they are about to fall; multiple of them. Her gums are also swollen, indicating she has the disease. So that's why her cheeks are chubby! Now you feel kinda bad for thinking its cute. “Yes we do darling how much do you want?”
“About 2 Livre (pounds) please.” She waited as you wrapped it up for her. “Do you wish to pay with your money or win it for free in a contest?” She squints her eyes. “Contest?”
With a bright smile you say “Yes a contest! This contest is an eating contest that only the people with Barlow's disease can contest in.” You show her a plate filled with oranges. “If the person is able to eat these oranges before the hourglass stops the person gets whatever they wish to buy for free! Remember, the more you want to buy, the more amount of fruit you have to eat.” You point out. At first you were a bit worried whether the girl would openly admit she has the disease since it’s considered shameful to openly admit a person is sick, but considering how her mouth was watering when she looked at the oranges, it was quite easy to determine she’d do anything for free food.
“W-Well…” She lifts her skirt a bit to show her swollen legs. “I have the sickness. Can I contest? If so, will my name be revealed for having the sickness??” Oh my god her cuteness is crushing your heart! “Oh no dear, nobody’s name shall be revealed, winner or participant. Do you want to contest?”
The girl nods vigorously as you set up the hourglass. The moment you tell her to start, she shoves all the slices of oranges into her mouth, making her choke. You panic and tell her to spit it out but she ignores your pleas and swallows them all, making her oesophagus hurt from the pressure.
You shift your demeanour and hand the pepper over to her. “C-Congrats! You won the contest! You can have this for free.”
She however is in a state of shock. To get good quality food for free is a miracle, a gift from God really.
“Did I…really win this?”
“Yes love you did! What you ate was quite a large amount too. Well done!” It wasn’t. You calculated time and time again this morning to get the orange slices proportional to the food they were buying in such a way that anyone with weak teeth could win it. You even used the son of the man and wife you met at first as a guinea pig, by making him eat them in the name of ‘A thank you gift.’ His sickness decreased drastically and his teeth became strong sometime after the meal, which was quite startling to see since you’ve never seen anyone recover that fast.
The little girl looked at you with doe eyes. “Can I contest again?”
“No love, a person gets only one chance per day. You can come tomorrow to try!”
“I will!” She squeaks. “I loved that fruit too. It’s flavour was unlike anything i’ve eaten, being sweet and tangy at the same time.” Damn it's hard to believe she was even able to taste it after seeing the way she shoved it in her mouth. “I’ll come again tomorrow to try nice lady!”
“Spread a good word for me!” You yell as she waves goodbye. It didn’t take much time for your shop to go popular. You told about this contest to anyone who entered your shop. Many were disgusted at the fact the sick have come here but others saw this as an opportunity to get free food. The sick came to you in disguise at first but within the span of four days they didn’t even hide  their sickness anymore. People started viewing your shop as a clinic at some point, an they started lining up, some even carrying family members who’ve lost their ability to walk.
It got to the point where all of this was happening at a loss, so the best course of action was to sell the oranges to other fruit traders. It not only gave you a huge profit but also made sure the cure was spread to all corners of Jerusalem. Your oranges were rumoured to be ‘The miracle cure’ so they sold out of shops within seconds. The poor still came to you for the free ones but the rich considered it a luxury product due to its high rates at shops. Funny how these were the same people who were disgusted at your idea at first.
Within one and a half months the sick decreased drastically. Your name became popular which worried you alot since you’re probably under the radar of assassins or someone more dangerous. Your quest too was finished, and the system gave you a heep of money which was enough to buy a moderately big home. While people were being cured, your anxiety surged more and more. You were certain your life was under a threat.
One faithful day while you were instructing the new employees on how to take care of the shop, the crowd became silent. They made way for a bunch of men on horses. It was the crusaders.
Everyone including you bowed slightly as they made an announcement.
“Madame Y/n, the king has noticed your efforts on eradicating the Barlow's disease. He has decided to meet you at the royal court to thank you properly. We shall be heading there NOW.” Two guards came up to you and dragged you inside a carriage like vehicle, which was poorly made.
This wasn’t an invitation to give you rewards. The KING himself has decided you’re a witch and has demanded your presence in court, to decide how to execute you.

I have freshly turned 50. This year is quite special to me, and being in Good Omens fandom accounts for much of that. Your open sharing of emotions and life stories helped me think over some of my problems, which most importantly resulted in me being diagnosed with ADHD this year. My past may be a dark place, but now I see a ray of light when I look in the future. To mark this change I treated myself to Good Omens trip to London, culminating with seeing David in Macbeth.
I owe all of you thanks, because it's your posts, arts and fanfics, made me bold enough to do this for myself.
Shoutout for great filming locations posts of @fuckyeahgoodomens which helped me tremendously with planning my trip.
I begun with romantic park of St.Dunstan-in-the-East:
Tumblr media
and lunch at the Sky Garden:
Tumblr media
I went both to the Tavistock Square:
Tumblr media
and to the real Berkeley Square (there is the Bentley’s dealer there, how fitting) and stopped at the Enterprise:
Tumblr media
I went to see Heaven and Hell main entrance at the Broadgate Tower, the escalators are quite visible from the outside.
I spent charming morning at St.James’s Park, the Bench was only partially sanded, but I was happy that the lock was still there. Heart rendingly only black swan from the usual black and white pair was present.  Was it also abandoned by its mate?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I went to Battersea Park, to see the Bandstand:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I may be Crowley-coded, but I really love books and made some lovely purchases at Aziraphale’s competition – heartily recommend (also for beautiful interiors) Daunt Books at 83-84 Marylebone High Street (https://dauntbooks.co.uk) and Hatchards at 187 Piccadilly (https://www.hatchards.co.uk  - they opened three years before our angel’s bookshop). If the weather is fine, Southbank Book Market under the Waterloo Bridge is always nice place to visit.
Made some walks though Soho and Mayfair. Here is photo of comic bookshop Gosh! on the corner of Berwick and Peter street – which was named as theoretical location of Az’s bookshop by him who shall not be mentioned:
Tumblr media
And festive angels on Regent Street:
Tumblr media
As I was alone, I wasn't in the mood for tea at the Ritz or dinner at the Masala Zone, but to stay loosely in Good Omens theme decided on lunch at Mercato Mayfair. It is St Mark’s church on North Audley Street, deconsecrated in 1974, now housing two floors of bars and restaurants, and... flower shop in the entrance, strong Crowley's wibes here: https://mercatometropolitano.com/mercato-mayfair
Also found this unexpected gem at the British Museum, just look on this drawing of this uncanny familiar couple 😊 presenting iron age gold jewellery from the Winchester Hoard: https://www.britishmuseum.org/collection/image/20030001
The peak of my stay was seeing David in Macbeth on 8th of November.
Tumblr media
This was incredible and I am so happy I was able to secure the ticket, although I was sitting far from the stage, and he wasn’t doing the stage door that day either, but, even from the distance, it was still great to see him perform live. I have mixed feelings as to the sound arrangements though. On one hand, it was incredible to hear actors practically whispering to your ear and I liked the special sound effects, on the other hand I felt this as kind of technical barrier between actors and the audience diminishing in a way live aspect of the play. Certainly it was something I have never experienced before and really worth trying.

You seem like a good sort of person to ask; how does one go about building up a good spice rack? Not only just having the spices, but knowing what they are and how to use them, when and in what quantities, and developing a wider spice palette in general? I grew up in white suburbia and my mother has no idea how to use anything other than salt and ground black pepper, and I want to start making my foods more flavorful. I am tired of utterly flavorless dry roast pork! But I have no idea where to begin lol.
I'd say to start by trying a lot of foods that use a lot of different spice profiles and seeing what you like. If you like Thai food, look into Thai spices and try cooking a few recipes. If you like Indian food, try Indian recipes. If you don't know if you like a particular kind of food, go out and try it and see if you do.
I think the best way to build up your spice rack is to do so slowly over time as you familiarize yourself with different flavors. Don't go out and buy a ton of stuff, go out and buy cumin and make a rice recipe that calls for cumin and see if you like it, then next time maybe add another spice like cayenne pepper to the recipe and see if you like it.
Spices can be really expensive, but they can also be really cheap if you're looking in the right places. Try to avoid the shiny organic spice jars, and see if there are packets of spices in the various "ethnic" food sections of your grocery store (in California it's pretty common to have a Mexican food section and an Asian food section in the store and you'll often find stuff like a packet of cumin for 70 cents that's got the same amount of spice as the organic jar that costs five bucks in the spice aisle).
Once you've got some basics down, start branching out and seeing if you've got any good markets nearby that have more unusual spices. Large Bastard and I get most of our bulk spices from a Middle Eastern market around the corner from our house or at an Indian market a few miles away because it's WAY cheaper to get allspice or turmeric or garam masala from those stores than it would be from the grocery store.
And if you're starting at the basic-basics, like how to season a simple pork roast, check recipe blogs. Find different bloggers and test their recipes until you find someone you trust, then follow their recipes. One good place to start is with Chef John and Food Wishes - he has a wide variety of cuisines that use a lot of different spices and has recipes that range from very simple to very complex.
youtube
Large Bastard really likes Food Wishes and trying recipes from Chef John - he cooks less than I do and has less of a sense of what to add to a pot to get something to taste the way he wants it to, but he's gotten very good at taking Food Wishes recipes and tweaking them or adjusting them and figuring out how to mix and match flavors.
Just cooking - finding a recipe that looks interesting and following it - is a really good way to get better at this kind of thing.
That's actually one of the reasons that I think meal kit boxes like blue apron can be worth it for people who want to learn how to cook - they give you recipes you wouldn't have thought to look for and provide small amounts of the required ingredients so you can sample them and figure out if you like them. My dad and sister got blue apron for like two years and it has significantly improved their cooking skills and ability to mix and match flavors.
It just takes time and money and trial and error. Easy, right? (It isn't, but there's also no way to make it faster other than doing more experiments. Thankfully there are ways to make it cheaper, and yeah looking at local specialty markets is a good way to save on spices)
