these are literally my oc’s and I was shitposting to a friend at the time I made these a few months ago. I just tweaked their names and outfits a little bit and got a little too into the joke 🚶‍♂️

Cried when I realized how it fits their personalities and some of their colors schemes

Some fun facts I guess:

Everyone except scal and meadow were genderbent to be enby and had their names changed (scal and meadow were already enby though so they just remained the same)

Scal and Cho are twins that probably fell at the same time

Prawny is the twin’s older sibling that went looking for them

Fun fact, if you want to see some old comics featuring some of these characters (mainly abi, scal, vie, and prawn), I made a webtoon a few years ago called An Unconscious Effort featuring them. Don’t expect anything good from the chapters though, they were primarily made to be a learning experience about making longer comic strips and suffer a lot in terms of quality. I do wish to officially start the comic one day, but for the time being I’m just working on trying to finalize the plot

Welcome to Let’s Talk Whump, a series of interviews that spotlight the amazing people in our whump community! I’m Malice and I’ll be your host today. 

Here today to talk all things whumpy is the fabulous @flowersarefreetherapy!

It’s an honor to have you here! Do you want to start us off with a fact or two about yourself?

Hi! I’m Marz, I’m a baby adult, and newer here to the whump scene! My favorite color is blue and I enjoy a huge variety of music. I have a Golden Retriever named Guinevere who is five years old and loves swimming, chasing tennis balls, and running through corn fields. Yeah, that’s about it! 

Let’s get straight to the point. What does whump mean to you?

As much as I love the hurt part of it, whump to me is about healing. It’s about picking yourself up even after life has beaten you into the ground. It’s finding your people who will help you and stand by your side on good and bad days. It’s taking those little steps towards healing, then looking back one day and realizing just how far you’ve come and how much you’ve accomplished. The pain and whumping of characters is horribly fun, but it’s the recovery and knowledge that there is something to lose that makes whump for me. 

How did you find the whump community and what made you want to join? 

So, I found the whump community purely by accident by jumping through writing blogs on Tumblr about three years ago, I think?? It was around 2019-2020 and I was looking for writing prompts when I stumbled onto @ashintheairlikesnow’s blog and learned there was a whole community dedicated to the hurt/comfort plotlines I had been reading all my life. Really what made me want to join was seeing there was an audience for the whump I was writing and the acceptance of OCs I was struggling to find in other writing circles. So I lurked for a while and then made the decision to join!

Do you think that your view of whump has shifted since you discovered it?

My view on whump has stayed the same, but what I write about has expanded. I’ve been exploring the BBU sandbox with different characters and different perspectives. It’s been a good challenge and one I look forward to continuing! 

Everyone’s favourite question: what are your favourite whump tropes?

Dehumanization and noncon are two of my favorites. What makes them so appealing to me is the loss of autonomy and the way it can fully break a character. Not only that, but it allows for some very fun power dynamics that I really enjoy in whump. Alongside that, those two tropes lead to the characters learning how to rebuild their world, their trust of other people, and what kind of life they want to make as part of their future. The healing that’s involved in both these tropes is messy and hard and something that is fought for, always with the support of those around them.

Would you mind sharing a favourite piece you've written? Hype yourself up, we want to hear it!

This is one of my favorite pieces! I love Thad’s breakdown here and while writing it, having that insight into how his past training impacts how he sees himself and sees the kids they’ve taken in. Another really fun piece I love is this one, mainly for the emotion and heartbreak of it all. 

Aww Thad! So much emotion in “You Are My Sunshine” ! Do you have a standard writing routine?

Chaos!! *evil laughter here* Just kidding (mostly). I tend to write when the inspiration strikes and knock out large chunks of writing at a time. Sometimes I’ll write bit by bit, especially when life is crazy, but I prefer to have the uninterrupted chunks of time. Usually I have caffeine with me as well to help the writing process speed along, in which my poison of choice there is Dr. Pepper!

And do you find some things are easier to write than others?

Dialogue! I love writing every bit of it! Using the words to both reveal and hide characters’ motives, changing what they want to say into what they can’t, playing around with hidden meaning in the phrases chosen: all of it is so good and makes it so fun to write! If I could write scenes that are all dialogue I would 

Is there anything you're working on at the moment?

Something I’ve been working on for a while is the next part of my Hold On series. It’s about to get sticky and complicated, so I'm working on how to get all the characters going the way I want them to. Of course, that’s not going to happen, but I’m trying to at least plot a path for the characters to run down.

Do you have a joke or pun you would like to share to spread some smiles today?

. . . . . . . wish I could be hilarious on command, but sadly I am cursed to not be.

That’s fine! Do you have any writing advice you’d like to share?

Love your writing, even the bits that seem weird or you think no one will like them. There are people who will love it and read it and scream about parts you didn’t even think were that good. You will find your writing groove and you’ll find your audience. Also, don’t delete anything! That is really important! You can always go back and edit a choppy scene or reuse a bit of dialogue, but deleting something means starting from a blank slate. Scenes can always be reworked, so keep them!

Oh man, oh man, there are so many people I could highlight! Seriously, this community is fantastic and wonderful and so welcoming! I had heard that about the whump community, but experiencing it for myself has been an honor. Okay, so people to shout out:

★ Marz (MD OC) ★

Marz is built like a disassembly drone but as the appearance of both a worker drone and disassembly drone. His direct species hasnt been figured out quite yet, he has different qualities and features from both varieties of the existing murder drones series species

He wears a hand drawn or hand crafted mask to hide his multi color eyes. Which to most is weird and odd. Since most of the drones in the series have mainly one set of colors for their visors.

His other exclusive unique feature is the void hands on his back, he's often seen using them to pick up certain item, and to basically assist him in certain day to day tasks (the hands are able to materialize from the air mainly) how this works is the toxic air pollution gives Marz the ability to manipulate the particles into a physical item, that is able to both touch and grab stuff.

His personality consists of being quiet and shy, usually avoiding being seen by others, and is always sneaking around to avoid being spotted or discovered

His clothing choice is alot like Serial designation N's outfit, due to the fact hes not got many outfits, and has the abilities to most likely copy others outfits with the same ability that lets him manipulate time to create his void hands.

🍊 What is your OC’s favourite meal? Snack? Dessert? Drink? Any reasons behind this besides liking how it tastes? What is your OC’s most hated food? Stuff they can’t stand to eat or drink?

GOURD really likes skewers. any kind of skewers. you can put anything on it so it's kind of cheating but he likes spicy lamb and fish skewers the most. also laghman. and uhh fish soup with the whole fish and its bones so the broth turns white...he doesn't get to eat it again until he reunites with his birth mom like 15 years later though. He had tried a couple of times to replicate the vague memory of the recipe before then but never could.

For snacks, he likes jerky or any fresh fruit or roasted chestnuts. He got used to eating jerky on the road and on the contrary found fresh fruit to be a treat. Dessert wise, he actually really likes fairly simple confections like caramels or konpeito...and he likes fruit juice. hes jice. He's really not picky and doesn't really HATE anything, but he's not suuuper fond of ishgardian fare, especially their dessert dishes...he doesn't like the jammy sickeningly sweet heavy syrupy stuff. The big exception to Ishgardian stuff is gingerbread cookies.

STRIKE REAAAAALLY loves anything with coconut milk...coconut cod chowder, hamsa curry. His favorite Thavnairian restaurant got blown up with rabanastre so he's upset about that. He also likes spicy food like Gourd. For snacks, he likes chews made of flowers you can find growing around the golmore...he likes floral tastes? In this vein, he likes floral teas and alcohols, and likes luxurious liquor chocolates lol. He avoids too much fried food because he feels like it slows him down & even though he likes the taste eating big game makes him feel lonely. because he remembers having people to share the huge amount of meat with Lol & tons of memories of hauling and skinning and preserving hunts alone. he likes to go eat fancy dishes and recipes that obviously take a lot of different sources to make.

💙 What did your OC want to be when they grew up and why? Did they have any lifelong dreams or ambitions they never got to work on or are they currently working to achieve this dream? Has their life taken a very unexpected turn and put all these plans on hold for a while or have they given up on any dreams?

GOURD...wanted to be one of the Spires forever, so just a merc do-gooder. And well....he's kind of living the dream as an adventurer LMFAOOOO he's never felt unsatisfied as one. He's never had big dreams? He's wanted small stuff like "I want to learn how to use the bow like Berg" or "I want to learn how to weave like Yulie" and his interest in those things coupled with the fact that he usually took an interest in them because someone next to him was doing it, who was willing to teach him, made him pick up a lot of skills. That's kind of all he wanted. When they died, those dreams froze with them, but throughout his travels he's learned that there are tons more people out there willing to share these things with him. One particular one was that he was supposed to set out on a yearlong journey with the 2nd youngest member of the Spires when he was 16, as their own way of learning to grow up outside the nest, but he vanished in the wake of the Calamity as well.

STRIIIKE. ok sicko joke he wanted to be a wood warder. Like he was enthusiastic about it. heartfelt. He loved the idea of fulfilling his part in protecting the village. He reveled in the fact that he was EXTREMELY talented at all the skills required to be one, he loved the praise and faith others showed him...when they were around to do it. It's just the fact of this one core tenet of being a warder aka Being Extremely Alone Forever was completely unbearable to him. He was unable to stand it and gave it and everything else up. He knows he will never get that back and he hates that he wasn't able to endure it even if he acts like he's totally confident and over it. After being given access to a library that belonged to a Sharlayan researcher & her gleaner apprentice, his dream is to experience a bunch of new and crazy shit and go anywhere he wants because he can now and if he gave up being a warder then he should at least totally live it up out here. His real dream at the core of this is to find a place to belong with people who love him. Lol.

He does absolutely live up to it though, he's trawled around a good area and seen and done a lot of things that he never could have in the wood. He's extremely well read and worldly despite his like...attitude. He's learned a lot of languages, even without the echo. unfortunately a lot of this time was spent sellswording to armies in the areas he went to and he saw like...actual war and mass death and shit for the first time. which was like okay so i guess the village wasn't lying about how ugly shit can get out here. After some unfortunate incidents he goes and sort of fixes himself in Rabanastre & takes on smaller scale jobs & is honestly a bit adrift until he gets freaky friday'd which sets off the chain of events that leads him to meet gourd.

UghH, Courtnees portayal of one shark baby is SO GOOD and my Kami is head over heels for the sweet bean. We started off talking about the rocky set up with their traitor verses and came to realize that the two would literally go through hell and back for each other. They’re two good boys trying their best!

We love the “smart one and dumb one” ship, now don’t we? Tenyas patience with Kaminari gives me life! They compliment each other so well and keep each other grounded. Yes, they have had their differences but I think their clashing personalities work and kamis head over heels for the class pres.

What's your artistic process like?

I'm a great deal into both traditional and digital art, but I've found that in both cases using the loomis method for people and/or power lines for animals has really started to boost the quality of my art. My inspiration seems to usually stem from music (Perhaps due to my synesthesia), and blooms into a story based on the words and feel of the piece. It took a few weeks of me listening to the song I chose for my Zine to finally get a clear vision of what I wanted.

Tell us a little bit about yourself!

Greetings! I'm a closeted Non-Binary person who prefers to go by the name Marzen on the internet though the nickname Marz I also seem attached to. I've been absolutely engrossed by LoZ games and everything else they have to offer since I first played Botw in 2018. How real and fleshed out the world feels really brought me to what you could call a release from responsibilities. And, since I have diagnosed ADHD, botw just so happens to be the only puzzle-focused game I've ever 100%ed! Sorry Skyward Sword. I love the colour gold, not like jewellery or riches, no, like a bright gold against a black background. Red through green are colours I am also delighted to see. I'm a dog person with an infinity for reptiles and birds. And Bugs! Maybe crustaceans as well... and arachnids. Well, you get it! I'm a sucker for angst, love the Hunger Games books, laughs at everything, allergic to just about everything as well, middle school student who's thinking of joining the Canadian Military just to make enough money to pay for school- I would give anything for a scholarship to RingLing college of Art and Design! I want to work on video game rigs when I come of age!

What kind of mediums do you like to use?

If I had any money at all I would use it for cosplay and/or and apple pencil, I was able to scrape together enough last year for a Wild costume to be made but I have greater aspirations for when I'm old enough to get a job ^^ For now, I've been spending my time memorizing Richard Williams "The Animator's Survival Kit" so I can get a head start in animating. Just wait until I get an apple pencil! I'll be animating 24/7 now that I'm out of dance!  

What got you into art? what inspires you to keep creating art?

Art for me is the ability to create ANYTHING! There's no limit with a pencil and paper. I mean, the LU wouldn't exist without it! There's so much power to be harnessed in being able to draw anything. You can tell stories, make gifts, brighten people's days and bring life to worlds that couldn't exist otherwise. It took me all 15 years of my life to figure out how much art can mean to people. It's so much harder than it looks, and yet, when you finally get it right, a lot can come from that!

What's your favorite/least favorite subjects to use in your art?

I love drawing cats. That's it. They came easily to me! In fact, learning the ways cats move was the key to me figuring out how to use power lines! I'm not great at fan art, I've fallen victim to the whole 'The sketch looks better than the final piece' thing which is sincerely frustrating sometimes. Really, creating completely randomized OCs help teach me how to draw much more than trying to paint Legends hair from 11 different angles.

What's the worst thing you had to draw?

I tried to draw curly hair once... never again. That's what I need to work on the most.

Is there something that you struggled with that made you grow as an artist?

Currently, I've been working on attaching legs to human figures a little more seamlessly. My big breakthrough came with finding the inspiration to learn from others. I've never had 1on1 help when it comes to art, but watching YouTube videos have provided me with an archive of vital information. Learning the way torsos worked in general on a person was a big turning point. That's when my art went from 2d, staring directly at the audience doing nothing, to being able to picture how I want the character to move in my mind and translating that with fancy angles and weight distribution accounted for. That either came from me watching other people create art or I just unlocked that part of my brain during puberty. I will admit though, I can draw the shape of a head really well but I struggled to capture the right emotions.

If you have any fun stories about the pieces you made, please do share!

I did an art swap with a friend a few months ago, while I gave her Warriors to draw, she gave me a furry and two weeks to complete an "exciting" scene. Now, I have nothing against this type of art, however, I had absolutely no clue how to draw non-humanoid characters in that format. I forked over ALL of my free time to learning how to draw fluffy people and it honestly drained my soul. The piece didn't even turn out good.

An AU Idea For Our Muses: okay for edith, i feel like?? leanne would be involved in one of those closed room murders and would help her figure out clues - in a modern setting. she has prob good intuition with people despite her demure and almost naïve nature. also thought for theodore (or either of them) - they’d be involved in an escape room kinda deal - like the zero escape/999 games?? always fun. 

A Song For Our Muses: Calm Afternoon Arrange ( PL VS AA !! OST !) I feel like it’d work with her and Edith? The vibe is calming and it’d be during them? possibly?? Talking over tea or something.

Do I Ship Our Muses?: Nope, because we haven’t really done much with these kids and Leanne yet LOL. But I’d be open to discussing stuff!

What I Think About The Mun: Between your chicago kids, oz, and your witches, I really?? Enjoy and revel learning more about your kids ? It’s always nice bouncing ideas off of you and you’re a real pleasure to talk with Toh?? I like how you’re p much open to anything. I also enjoy the depth you’ve put into your witches and chicago kid’s setting, slowly revealing facts about them…?

Oc fun facts!!! Valentines day edition!!!

Valentines is Rose's favorite holiday, so she'll give her friends a box of chocolates and a flower that reminds her of them. For example, Charlotte would get an orchid, and Max would get a alyssum.

Charlotte will give everyone in her class a heart shaped lollipop. On the other hand, she'll give Max a box of chocolates because Max doesn't like lollipops.

On the other hand, Max would forget about Valentines day until the day of it. She'll quickly put together some cards.
