The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has issued a traffic advisory to ease the pressure of traffic gridlock in the state ahead of the All Progressives Congress, APC, presidential campaign rally scheduled to hold on Tuesday. The event is expected to hold at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere, with President Muhammadu Buhari expected to lead the APC PCC at the rally. In a statement, on Sunday, the LASTMA General Manager, Bolaji Oreagba, said the APC presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, party stalwarts, and supporters will also be present at the rally. According to Oreagba, the APC leaders will travel from the local airport through Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way, Maryland; Ikorodu Road (Idi-Iroko, Anthony, Obanikoro, Onipanu, Fadeyi), Jibowu, Empire, Moshalashi, Ojuelegba, Barracks, arriving at the stadium. Lagos Partners Julius Berger to Disinfect Major Roads, Bus Stops As part of continuing efforts to curtail the spread of Coronavirus, the Lagos State Government has partnered with construction giant, Julius Berger Plc to embark on the disinfection of some major roads across the State. Speaking at the flag-off exercise at Iddo Bus Stop during the weekend, the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tunji Bello, said the gesture from Julius Berger Plc underscores the determination of the present administration to secure the lives of residents. Bello gave an assurance that the government will continue to adopt measures to curtail the community transmission of the COVID-19 pandemic. While commending Julius Berger for providing trucks and tankers with dispensers, as well as some chemicals for disinfecting surfaces and hand railings at various locations, Bello mentioned that the disinfection will run through Iddo Market; Costain; Oyingbo; Iponri; Bode Thomas; Orile; Yaba; Jibowu; Maryland; Ojuelegba; and Ojota. Other areas to be disinfected are Ikeja Under Bridge; Computer Village; Agidingbi Bus Stop; Grammar School; and Ojodu Berger. In Lagos Island, the fumigation exercise will cover Tafawa Balewa Square, Outer and Inner Marina, CMS, Tinubu Square, Glover Road, Sura Bus Stop, Upper Campos Bus Stop and Obalende Roundabout. The Commissioner, who was represented by the Director of Sanitation Services, Dr. Hassan Sanuth, at the flag-off, explained that the chemicals being deployed for the exercise is a mixture of Hydrogen Peroxide and Chlorine. The expansion joints of the bridge have been repaired, and additional pedestrian bridges have been marked for routine maintenance. The administration is focused on reducing travel time, saving man-hours, boosting interconnectivity, providing better riding surfaces, and eliminating traffic gridlocks. Hamzat said; “Everybody keeps saying that maintenance of infrastructure is a challenge. But, in Lagos, we are saying it is not. This informed our decision to maintain this infrastructure and put it in good shape. The expansion joints which are necessary accessories for bridges were repaired and are now in good shape, and all the manholes that were stolen have been replaced. “But it is important to say that these new manhole covers are fibres and not metals. So if you steal it, it is useless. But the manhole covers protect people. It is to protect human beings so they don’t fall off bridges. This is a safety issue. It is no longer steel. It is fibre and so difficult to remove. And even if you remove it, it’s useless to you, and if you are caught, you will be prosecuted. “This administration is focused on road and bridge infrastructure to reduce travel time, save important man-hours that would have been otherwise lost to traffic; boost interconnectivity; provide better riding surface; eliminate traffic gridlocks and generally make life more meaningful to commuters. And because we place a high premium on the safety of lives, many pedestrian bridges have also been identified for routine maintenance.” Read the full article
