Always Ever Only You Part 34 | Rooster x Reader
Summary: Without you at home, Bradley's big mouth is about to get him in trouble. As he counts down the hours until he can pick you up from the airport, you wrap up your trip to Maryland with a visit to your childhood home. However, you're not as smooth as you think you are. By the time you get back to San Diego, you are an absolute train wreck, and some secrets have been revealed.
Warnings: Swearing, pregnancy topics, angst, fluff
Length: 4500 words
Pairing: Bradley "Rooster" Bradshaw x Female Reader
This was written to accompany my series Is It Working For You? along with a bunch of my one-shots and other series, but it can be read on its own! Check my masterlist for the reading order. Always Ever Only You masterlist. Gorgeous banner by @mak-32
On Thursday morning, Bradley got to work a little bit early. He just needed to make a tiny detour to one of the database computers. He really wasn't sure if you realized that you told him Commander Patterson's first name last night, or if you let it slip by accident, but now that he knew it, he just wanted to check him out.
Every trip you took to Annapolis turned into some sort of disaster at one point or another. He couldn't imagine you were out there looking for trouble, but it sure did find you in the form of Derek or Josh. You were the most capable person Bradley knew, but he loved and respected you enough to know that sometimes you needed a break. Right now, he just wanted to bring you back home and take care of every tiny need or want that you or the baby might have. He'd honestly fucking delight in that.
As soon as he logged into the system, Bradley typed in your full name, complete with Bradshaw hyphenated at the end. A second later, your image appeared on the screen complete with lovely smile and gorgeous eyes. "That's my Baby Girl," he muttered, still captivated by this photo of you.
He forced his fingers back to the keyboard, but no results appeared when he looked for Derrick Patterson. He tried Paterson. Then he tried Derick. Then he tried Derek Patterson and saw the face of the asshole who made his wife cry over a steak dinner. Were you more emotional right now than perhaps you would usually be? Absolutely. But that was only because you were pregnant. As soon as you told him you had a positive pregnancy test, Bradley's number one concern in this world simply switched from his wife to his wife and his child.
This guy looked like a real tool. Forty-four years old. Ranked up to Commander two years ago. Worked in a simulation lab. Had the same degrees from the Naval Academy that you earned. "Yeah, well I can guarantee you're not as smart as her, you motherfucker."
He took another minute to memorize what he saw there before logging out. Maybe he'd ask Maverick about him. Cyclone and Warlock would be good resources, too. Bradley just hated that he wasn't able to make you feel safe and comfortable at the moment, but as soon as he picked you up tomorrow, he'd take care of everything.
When he started to head out to the tarmac, he literally ran into someone while he was adding steaks to the grocery list he saved in his phone. He didn't know how to cook a steak, but he'd get them just in case you were still in the mood for one. "Sorry," he muttered, not really looking up, too concerned with what else you might want.
"It's okay, Bradley."
Then he did look up into the dark eyes of Maria Wilson. "Hey," he said with a smile at your good friend. "I've been meaning to ask you... how's rooming with Bob going for you?"
"Great," she replied with a little shrug and a completely neutral expression. "He's clean and courteous, and I think the arrangement is going to work out really well."
If he didn't know better, Bradley would have believed nothing was going on. She was that good. But he did know better. He wasn't going to do Bob dirty, so he just nodded and said, "I hope it does work out. I've always felt a little bad about stealing my wife away from you."
She just laughed and said, "Like we didn't all see that coming a mile away."
He wandered off with a grin on his face after he said goodbye. He was planning on making a few stops on the way home before Jake showed up to workout together later. Bradley just had to get through one more night and then you'd be back.
----------------------------
You were an idiot for eating two steaks and seventeen pounds of sides and then passing out for the night. Sure, at the time, it seemed like the best idea you'd ever had. Derek's porterhouse hit the fucking spot like nothing else. The potatoes were creamy and delectable. The brussels sprouts? A thing of beauty.
But Thursday morning, you were back to your normal routine of throwing up as soon as you got out of bed. "I get it, okay?" you gasped as you sprawled out on the bathroom floor. "I understand," you added, letting your hand settle on your belly. "You miss your Dad. Well guess what. I miss him, too. Now will you stop acting out if I promise to take you home tomorrow?"
A soft gurgle as your stomach started to settle was the response you got, and that was actually better than you could have hoped for. When you heard tapping on your hotel room door, you knew it was Cat, and you wanted to cry. You were wearing Bradley's UVA shirt and a pair of your ratty underwear and nothing else, and she'd just keep knocking until you answered.
"I'm coming," you moaned, actually crawling most of the way there. You pulled yourself up and then cracked the door open a few inches, and you were met with Cat's appraising eyes. "Hi."
"I just wanted to know if you wanted to get breakfast with me," she said cautiously.
"No, I'm good, but thanks for asking." You tried to close the door, but her foot was immediately preventing that.
"Are you sick?" she asked. "I can bring something back for you."
"No, I'm okay," you told her. Your stomach lurched, and your eyes went wide. You had about ten seconds to get rid of her and make it to the toilet. You didn't know what to do as saliva pooled at the back of your tongue. You started to gag as your eyes filled with tears.
"Hey," she said softly. "If something's wrong, you can tell me."
But you shook your head and let go of the door, making a mad dash back into the bathroom. You barely made it to your knees in front of the toilet before you barfed again. "Why?" you moaned, wiping your mouth with toilet paper before rolling onto the bath mat which had become your best friend.
"Oh my god," Cat muttered as she walked right into your hotel room bathroom. She flushed the toilet and then turned to the sink and started to fill one of the disposable cups with water. "You're pregnant," she stated plainly. "You could have told me, you know. Congratulations, by the way."
As she knelt on the floor next to you, she helped you sit up. You accepted the cup from her and said, "It's just food poisoning." She blinked at you a few times, giving you no wiggle room to lie to her. "Fine," you admitted with a little smile, "I'm pregnant."
She ran the backs of her fingers along your forehead while you sipped the water. "How far along are you?"
"About nine or ten weeks," you whispered as you closed your eyes for a few beats. "I'm just really tired and really fucking sick. I felt good last night, but now I feel terrible again."
Cat took the empty cup from your hand and wrapped you up in a soft hug. "Thank you for holding it together for the presentation. Now you need to get back into bed."
You shook your head and said, "I need to get up and moving so I can go see my parents later."
"No," she said firmly, guiding you back to the bed. "You need to rest right now. You'll feel better if you do."
Part of you wanted to make sure your suitcase was closed so she didn't see your vibrators, but mostly you didn't even care. She had a certain way about her that was calming you down, and as soon as you were in the bed, she tucked you in. You almost believed her when she told you that resting would help you feel better.
"Where's your room key?" she asked once you were curled up on your side.
You let one hand sneak out from under the covers and pointed. "Next to the TV."
She patted your shoulder and promised she would be back soon, and then she was gone. You dozed on and off while your stomach gurgled, and you missed a few texts from Bradley. When Cat eventually opened your door and let herself in, you were actually feeling hungry. And that's when you noticed two bags and a cup carrier in her hands.
Quietly, she set everything down on your nightstand including some orange juice that almost brought a tear to your eye. Somehow she knew that was what you needed when you didn't even know yourself. You sat up as she poked a hole in the lid and handed it to you, and you drank half of it down in one sip.
"You need to eat something," she whispered, taking the cup away again. "I got you a bagel with cream cheese, an egg sandwich, a few different kinds of donuts and a muffin."
You reached for the bagel, and she unwrapped it for you. "I'll pay you back," you rasped, but she shook her head.
"Don't worry about it. Just make the baby happy, and we're square," she replied as she sank down into the chair beside the bed.
But you were definitely going to worry about it. Money was very tight for Cat and Jeremiah, so you would have to figure out a way to make it even. She probably spent about forty bucks on all of this for you, and somehow she knew that a sesame seed bagel with cream cheese would go down as happily as the steaks did. You devoured the whole thing and then took some bites out of the egg and cheese sandwich before finishing the orange juice.
Then you drank some of the hot tea as well and nibbled on a muffin, and you felt so much better. Cat asked you a few questions, but she didn't pry. "Bradley must be over the moon," she said softly with a sad smile.
"Oh yeah," you told her, knowing that her ex-husband did not have a relationship with Jeremiah. "He dubbed the baby the chicken nugget." When she laughed, you added, "He's very excited to be a dad."
"He'll be a good one," she confirmed with a nod. "Now why don't you rest for a few more hours, and then I can drop you off at your parents' house so you don't have to drive."
"You don't have to do that."
"I'll drop you off and then go to the outlet mall. There are some things I want to get for Jer, and then I can pick you up again." She probably knew it wasn't a good idea to let you drive like this, and you were honestly kind of thankful that she offered.
"Alright." You fell asleep again as soon as she was gone.
--------------------------
When Bradley left work, it was blazing hot out, and he had his aviators on while he walked to the parking garage. It was already late as hell in Maryland, and he was a little afraid you had already left your parents and gone back to the hotel for the night. But your phone only rang briefly before you answered his FaceTime call.
"Bradley," you sighed, looking better than he'd seen you in weeks. "Here, say hi to everyone."
You turned your phone to reveal both of your parents along with Cat, sitting around the dining room table in the house where he was finally getting used to spending his holidays. They all greeted him warmly before your mom took the phone and asked him at least a dozen questions.
"Are you eating enough without her at home? How's work? How's Tramp? When can we come visit again, because she's not giving us a clear answer?"
She said nothing about the baby, so Bradley assumed you were holding yourself together well enough that it hadn't been mentioned. "I've been subsiding on cereal. Work is great. Tramp is great. I've been thinking about starting a project to expand the upstairs into another bedroom or two, so hopefully after that's finished, you and dad can stay as long as you want."
Bradley knew they would feel like a handful for him if they stayed at the house again, but that was only because he liked being alone with you. He really wanted to take a minute to talk to you privately, but your dad took the phone next so he could show off his latest painting project. When he finally got handed back to you, apparently it was time for you and Cat to head out.
"I'll let you know when the flight leaves tomorrow," you told him. "Love you, Roo."
And that was it. With a deep sigh, he started up the red Bronco and headed to the store on his way home. He hated shopping in his uniform; he always got a bunch of looks from people, mostly women. He tried to make it quick, but it took him a little time to gather up steaks, potatoes, garlic, your favorite coffee, and all of the yellow flowers in the floral section.
He barely had all of the food put away at home when Jake knocked twice on the front door before letting himself in the house. "It's like he fucking lives here," Bradley muttered to Tramp who had been waiting for his scoop of dinner before he ran to see Jeremiah.
"Hey, man," Jake called out. He had Cat's son tucked under one arm and some weird contraption under the other, and he was wearing gym clothes. "Did you just get home?"
"Yeah," Bradley replied, unable to keep himself from smiling when Jeremiah reached out for him. He took the little boy in his arms and told him, "I had to get some stuff for my wife. You remember her. She's your favorite babysitter. She read you some books while you fell asleep, because her voice is the sweetest thing in the world."
Jake rolled his eyes. "Angel made you soft, old man."
Bradley pointed to Jeremiah. "And this little thing made you soft, so you don't have a leg to stand on."
He just kind of shrugged in response and took the child back as he said, "Go get changed. I'll meet you in the garage."
As Jake disappeared through the sliding glass door, Bradley headed to the bedroom. He stripped out of his uniform and put on some shorts and a Top Gun shirt that was starting to fit a little snug across his biceps and chest again. This was a good sign, because he wanted to bulk up as much as possible. He'd be ready to haul the baby and all of the gear around so you didn't have to.
His thoughts were on you and the baby. You. Baby. You. Baby. He couldn't wait until both of you were home tomorrow. When he walked out to the garage, he found Jake doing a few pushups while Jeremiah played with a stuffed tiger while he sat in some sort of portable crib.
"What is that thing?" Bradley asked as he reached for his lifting gloves. "A mini crib?"
Jake jumped to his feet as he said, "It's called a pack 'n play, but yeah, it's kind of a mini crib that folds up."
"Huh," he replied, eyeing it up so he could search online for that kind of thing later. "Looks handy. We're definitely going to need one of those."
Jake was frozen in place, eyes wide and jaw hanging open. "Is Angel pregnant? I knew her ass looked bigger." A grin curled along his lips, and that was when Bradley realized he had fucked up.
"Oh, shit," he muttered as his heart rate sped up and he started to sweat. You were going to be so upset. Your own parents didn't even know yet, but now Jake did, and it was all his fault.
"She's pregnant!" Jake practically shouted. "Congratulations, Rooster," he said, pulling Bradley into a hug and slapping him on the back. "You finally figured out which hole to put it in, huh?" he asked with an absolutely obnoxious grin.
Bradley glared at him. "Seriously. Nobody else knows about this yet. She might murder me if she finds out you know."
"I won't say shit about it," Jake promised, cuffing him on the shoulder before releasing him. "Damn, she must be excited. I know you both wanted this."
"Yeah," Bradley rasped, just knowing his face must be flushed pink. He ran his fingers through his hair. "I'm so fucking happy and scared and nervous, I can barely make it through a day without her here, you know?"
Jeremiah roared and held up the tiger for Bradley. He took it and made it roar back before pretending it was kissing Jeremiah all over his face. His laugh was infectious, and it left Bradley smiling.
"Damn," Jake drawled. "I think you're ready for the parenting thing."
"I know I am," he replied, fixing him with a serious look. "I'm ready."
Jake sighed and nodded. "But you still have a lot to learn. Do you know about outlet covers?"
Bradley's eyes went wide. "No. What are those?"
"How about white noise to help a baby sleep? Do you know what a convertible car seat is?"
"No," Bradley whispered, "No, I don't."
Jake settled back onto the bench and reached for the barbell. "Spot for me, and I'll tell you everything I've learned."
------------------------
It was finally Friday morning, and Cat was knocking on your door with another round of food and orange juice before you were even out of bed. When you let her in, she set everything up on the nightstand while you went to use the bathroom, and you were pleasantly surprised that you didn't need to throw up while you were in there.
"Eat as much as you can," she told you. "I asked them to give you a late checkout, so you can stay here until noon, and then we'll head to the airport."
"You're a saint," you told her with a mouth full of bagel. "I owe you so much money for this, you have to let me pay you back."
She just shook her head. "I'll let you babysit Jer so Jake and I can go out one night. Assuming I'm still in a relationship after we get bad to San Diego later tonight."
"You will be," you told her as you sipped the orange juice. "Jake isn't stupid." You paused before you set the juice down in favor of a donut. "Well... he's kind of stupid, but not when it comes to this."
Cat reached into the bag for another donut. "Seriously, if he and Bernie can't figure their shit out, I'll pull the plug and never look at another man again."
"Sometimes they really aren't worth the aggravation," you remarked, thinking back to every guy you dated before Bradley. "But sometimes they surprise you."
She didn't say anything else as she finished her donut. Then she let you take a nap, and when you got up and got dressed, you felt pretty amazing. Your stomach was gurgling quietly, and you looked okay enough to skip the makeup today.
You dragged your suitcase out into the hallway and texted Bradley, letting him know you were going to be heading to the airport soon, and he responded almost immediately.
Bradley Rooster Bradshaw <3 <3 <3: i'll meet you in baggage claim sweetheart. i can't wait to have you and the nugget back home with me
You practically moaned, and also started tearing up as Cat met you in the hallway. "When willI I be normal again?" you whispered. "All I want to do is have rough, frequent sex with my husband, but every time I think about how sweet he is, I start crying."
She laughed and said, "You won't feel normal until about six months postpartum. Just have fun running that man ragged."
You nodded and wiped at your tears. "Where's our equipment bin?"
"Already in the car."
"You weren't supposed to move it alone! It's so heavy."
"And you shouldn't be carrying anything like that at all," she scolded, pushing you gently toward the elevators. "I took care of it. I'll take care of it all day, and I'll get your suitcase when we get to the airport, too."
You sobbed the whole way down in the elevator and most of the ride to the airport. When you said thank you, Cat told you to be quiet which made you smile and also cry more. You'd get Bradley to agree to watch Jeremiah for a whole weekend. It would give the two of you some practice, and it would give Cat and Jake time alone. There was no way he was going to mess anything up.
--------------------------
Bradley parked the red Bronco at the airport with a vase of flowers in the cup holder and an ultrasound picture tucked into the visor. Your flight had been delayed a few times, and he figured you were probably starving now. He picked up the container of peanut butter crackers he prepared and started to head inside, still a little too early but with nothing better to do.
He found an empty bench, and it wasn't long before Jake came strolling in with Jeremiah in his arms. Bradley stood up, jostling the snack container as he muttered, "You're not going to say anything to her, right?"
"Relax," Jake replied as Jeremiah reached for the crackers. "I won't say a word about her being pregnant. You can count on me."
That actually made him feel a lot more nervous as he opened up the container, broke a cracker in half and handed it to Jeremiah. "Okay. Just pretend you don't know a thing about it."
He watched Jeremiah get crumbs all over Jake's shirt as Jake checked his phone. "Sure. Hey, they landed. Cat said they're walking off the plane now."
Bradley checked his phone, but there was absolutely nothing from you, which was really strange. "Huh." He stood there awkwardly as he'd been left out of the loop, handing the other half of the cracker to Jeremiah when he reached for it.
He watched Jake typing one handed, and then he said, "Apparently there was a ton of turbulence. Angel got pretty sick." When he met Bradley's eyes, he kind of shrugged. "Sounds like she's in bad shape."
Bradley ran his fingers through his hair until it was sticking up at an odd angle. "What's that supposed to mean? How is she in bad shape?" He looked over toward the partition that blocked off the area he wouldn't be able to get past without a boarding pass while he started to panic. Was he going to have to take you to the hospital or something? The cereal and potato chips he had for dinner started to sour in his stomach as he started walking in that direction.
Then he saw you, and he started running. Cat had her arm around you, and she was carrying your tote bag along with her backpack while you sipped a can of ginger ale through a straw. Bradley could see fresh tears in your eyes as they met his. "Oh, Sweetheart."
"Roo," you croaked, and he closed the rest of the distance to you and carefully took you in his arms. "I was horrible."
Cat took the ginger ale from your hand, and you collapsed against him, a sobbing, shaking mess. "It's okay," he promised you. "You're home now, and I will take care of everything."
You nodded against his chest, and he let you cry. "I threw up so much. I was fine, but then it was really rough, and the baby hates me anyway." You cried harder, and then Jake was there with Jeremiah. He took the container of crackers so Bradley could rub your back with both hands. You hiccupped against him and mumbled, "You can say what you want. Cat knows. She guessed it. Then she took care of me."
Bradley wasn't surprised in the least that someone who had been pregnant before was able to tell that you were now. "Okay," he whispered, kissing the top of your head. He held you close and gave both Cat and Jake a stern look. "Do you want to go ahead and tell Jake?" he asked carefully.
"Yeah," you groaned, leaning toward Jake slightly. "I'm pregnant."
If Jake didn't get Bradley out of this debacle safely, he was going to ban him from the home gym. But he should have known that above anything else in this scenario, Jake was going to have your back.
"Aww, Angel," he crooned as Jeremiah climbed into Cat's arms. "I'm so happy for you, mama." Then he kissed your cheek and winked at Bradley. "You'll be a natural, and ol' Rooster here's gonna be a class act. Now why don't you let him take you home? I can get the bin of your work stuff."
"You sure?" Bradley asked, giving Jake a discreet fist bump as you buried your face against his chest again. You were half burrowed inside his tropical print shirt at this point, and his undershirt was damp; he just wanted to get you home.
"We'll take care of it," Cat promised. "She's dehydrated. Make sure she drinks water or gatorade. And she needs to try to eat something." Jake handed the crackers back to Bradley. "Yeah, those might work, but she really needs to keep drinking."
"Got it," Bradley replied, kissing your forehead. "Thank you, Cat."
"It was my pleasure," she said with a smile as she cuddled Jeremiah.
"Let's go, Baby Girl," Bradley whispered, leading you to get your suitcase as you sipped the ginger ale and nibbled on a cracker. He kept his hand at the small of your back as you sucked in deep breath after deep breath. "I'll get you home and into bed as quickly as possible."
You sniffed and looked up at him. "I just want you with me. That's all I wanted all week."
Your lips quivered, and Bradley leaned in to kiss you as softly as he could. "That's all I wanted, too. I'm not going to leave your side." He kept you right there with him as he scooped up your luggage, and then he had his arm around you until he got you to the Bronco. With a kiss to your perfect cheek, he opened the door, helped you in, and buckled your seatbelt.
"Thanks, Roo," you sighed, eyes closed as you leaned back against the headrest, already looking more serene now that you and he were together.
"I would do anything for you." He stroked your belly with his fingertips. "Both of you."
Five minutes into the drive home, you were sound asleep, your fingers laced with his.
------------------------
I can already feel how much calmer she is just knowing she doesn't have as much to worry about with Bradley by her side. And he's going to be so much less stressed with her at home. It's looking like next chapter could be the last one in this series!!!! I'm hoping to do some one-shots for them and then pick up with another series? Please let me know what you'd like to see during and after her pregnancy. And thank you for reading! Thanks @mak-32 and @beyondthesefourwalls

Hey, how was your day? Tired from work? Annoying boss? Come to reso- music! We'll heal you with music.
We gonna share some classic folk songs with you today. Folk music has always had a unique way of connecting with people, and they often feature slow, simple, repetitive melodies that allow the lyrics to take center stage and convey a message.
🎵
Can't get enough of 《Five Hundred Miles》.
Melodic, natural and fresh. Life is hard, and you're not 500 miles from home. If you listen to it when you are lost and confused, your mood will be calmed down...
If you miss that train I'm on, it's the one I've left alone and in dismay; listen to the whistle that stretches for a hundred miles, a hundred miles, and a hundred miles ......
🎵
《Take Me Home, Country Roads 》 is a 1971 song written by American folk singer John Denver with Bill Danoff and Taffy Nivert.
The inspiration for the song came from Bill Danoff, a musician friend of John Denver's, and his wife, Taffy Nivert, who told him that he was accompanying Nivert on a trip to join her family in Maryland; on the way there, he remembered a tune that would be suitable for a folk ballad.
After hearing the demo tune, John Denver was intrigued enough to talk to Danoff and Nivert about revising it for his next album, Poems, Prayers and Promises.
Every time we hear this song, it always evokes strong feelings of homesickness. country roads, take me home, to the place I belong... No matter how unsatisfactory life is, as long as the home is still there, our souls and bodies will have a place to return to.
🎵
...How to appease the lonely soul on a long night? In the face of the darkness of silence, natural contemplation is the greatest solace, the stars in the hazy moonlight, full of dewdrops of flowers, have given us the freedom of tolerance, soaring thoughts, so that loneliness has become a kind of enjoyment in the journey of life.
Accompanied by the melody of the bass, loneliness becomes a rare luxury. In loneliness you hear the sound of gurgling spring water? In loneliness do you see the round dance song gliding through the grass on a summer night? “Hello, darkness, my old friend, I've come to talk to you again.” ...... Let's use the key of 《The Sounds of Silence》 to open the door of loneliness in our hearts, and in loneliness, experience the depth and breadth of life, and welcome the bright dawn of your own.
As the theme song to the Academy Award-winning film 《The Graduate》 and one of the most iconic pieces of music of all time, this song has touched the hearts of millions of people around the world, spanning more than half a century, and has been sung for a long time.
🎵
Every time I hear this song 《Valder Fields》 by Toams Wells,
It's like sitting alone in the soft grass.
The warm afternoon sunlight is spreading gently on you.
White clouds roaming in the blue sky
The breeze smells of earth
and caresses your face.
In front of you are mountains and lakes.
Cows and goats are grazing.
It's peaceful and quiet.
The upbeat yet serene rhythms and gentle yet moving lyrics quiet every restless soul.
🎵
This is a Scandinavian ballad about a two-way crush called 《Say Hello》, sung by Roise Thomas and Sufjan Stevens.
The whole song is sweet and youthful, perfectly illustrating the nervousness, hesitation and anticipation of a crush.
If you meet someone you like, look them in the eye and say hello.
🎵
《Happy (I Used To Be)》,sung by the Norwegian singer-songwriter Egil Olsen, unique Nordic temperament, warm and continuous voice, slowly flowing with the sadness of the lazy mood, with minimalist and moving songs known as one of Norway's best live performers!
This song is a slow way to grieve, perfect for a quiet night or drunk moments to enjoy.
————
Listen to reso-music! Listen to how folk songs make the world feel right. Joy, sadness, frustration, secret love, homesickness, friendship, etc., there is always a feeling that can RESOnate with you.

As requested by references (a) and (b), specific data substantiating the recommendation of the award of a Navy Cross to LT John Kelvin Koelsch, U.S.N. (Dec) is submitted herein. 2. LT John Kelvin Koelsch was very well known by me, personally, both before and during his entire period of service in the USS PRINCETON (CV-37). I was his commanding officer, when he was on duty in Attack Squadron 75 and I was Air Officer in the PRINCETON during his period of service in that vessel. I agree wholeheartedly with the comments of Captain W.O. Gallery, U.S.N. with request to LT Koelsch contained in reference (b). I, too, firmly believe that LT Koelsch was a real naval hero. I believe that LT Koelsch merits the award of the Navy Cross (posthumously) for repeated acts of exceptional heroism as a helicopter pilot attached to the USS PRINCETON during the period from late October, 1950 to June, 1951 and, subsequently, as a pilot of a helicopter, while attached to a helicopter unit (designation unknown) operating in Korea. 3. LT Koelsch reported to the PRINCETON as officer-in-charge of the helicopter detachment of Helicopter Squadron ONE about three weeks prior to the PRINCETON’s departure from the United States, on 9 November 1950, for the Korean Theater. The PRINCETON operated five days in the Hawaiian area for operational training COPY TO CAPT W. O. Gallery, U.S.N. Nick and Hazels house
It has been 5 years, 2 months and 22 days since Nick and Hazel ran away from home. They packed their things and left the night of the dreaded dinner. With two duffel bags filled with clothes and two backpacks filled with other supplies they left to Maryland. Nick took his savings from the multiple student jobs he did for years to buy two train tickets to Maryland. Hazel left a note for Benjamin, telling him how much she loves her brother and that she will try to keep in contact with him.
The couple didn’t know what their parents would do. If they would let them be or inform the cops and started looking for them. The only idea that the two teenagers could think about was changing their appearance. Before the train left they bougth hair dye and scissors. They changed hazels beautiful longe blonde hair in short black locks. Nick went a little bolder with his hair. He dyed one part of his hair blue and the other part black. Hazel though he looked very good. They both wore glasses and hats to hide more of their identity. They also left their phones at home, not wanted to get tracked.
When they arrived in Maryland. They applied to have their name changed. Again a plan of them to hide their identity. Nick got accepted into the naval academy and he knew his dad would know if his surname was still Bradshaw. Their changed names: Nicolas Peter Bradshaw became Nicolas Peter Bradfield and Hazel Alexandra Seresin became Hazel Alexandra Serpell. With the acceptance, he had to change his hair color again, since multicolored hair wasn’t allowed. He decided to go blonde.
Had they taken this a little too far? Maybe. But they were determined to raise this baby the best that they could.
After living for 3 months in a homeless shelter, they found a small apartment. It wasn’t in the best neighborhood, but it was affordable with the small amount of money the couple earned with their small jobs. Nick worked as a construction worker for 2 months before finding out he was accepted in the academy. Hazel worked at a small café and managed to get into an evening school to finish her high school degree.
They may haven’t had much, but they were happy. And their little family got bigger on November 25, 2041 when their kids were born. Yes, kids. The couple had twins. Twin boys to be specific. Their names: Benji Theodore Bradfield and Mac Adrian Bradfield. Their firstborn was named after Hazels brother, who she kept in contact with. Occasionally she would send a letter to her brother and Benjamin kept them away from his parents. He didn’t take it very well when he found out that his parents were going to force his sister to have an abortion.
When their parents found out their kids ran away, they went out of their way to look for them. The dads were determined to find their kids, while their mothers were worried more about the dangers they could be in. After a half year of looking for them, their hope left little by little. The fathers, who weren’t really good friend anymore after the dinner, realised their mistakes. It took a while for them to become friends like they were before, but they were as good as they could be after losing their children. The Bradshaw family were lucky with Sparky. A reminder of their son while it took the Seresin family a little longer to accept the disappearance of their youngest and only girl.
After 2 years the couple moved out of their apartment to a smaller house in a nicer neighborhood. Nick had still 2 years left of his education in de academy. During the first year he had received the callsign Dash. Hazel couldn’t stop laughing when he explained the meaning behind the name. Dash: Dumb Ass Shit. Given to him by a friend after Nick threw up all over a commanders officers shoes after a night out.
Hazel found a better paid job in a clothing store. Having a low paid serving job and trying to save as much money as possible. Hazel tried to save money with upcycling baby clothes from the thrift shop. She realised that she had a talent for sewing and designing clothes. Apart from her job in the clothing store she follows an online course for fashion design. The lives of the couple went well and they never regretted leaving their homes at such a young age.

Nick and Hazels house
Back to the present
Hazels age: 21, Nicks age: 23, the kids ages: 4
It was almost 5:30 pm and Hazel was making dinner for her family. The two 4 year old brothers were in the kitchen with her. Benji was coloring a Bluey coloring book while Mac was playing with a kids puzzle. Benji was the loud one out of the two while Mac liked to stay in the background. They were a perfect combination of both Nick and Hazel. They had Hazels Natural light blonde hair and Nicks dark brown eyes. Even though they had Hazels nose, you could tell they were Bradshaw boys. Hazel became very fond of her short dark black hair and decided to keep it. Nick didn’t mind, because he thought she looked very sexy with her bright eyes and dark hair. Nick let his hair fade back towards his light brown color.
“Baby! I’m home!” A deep voice came from the hallway. The front door closes and Hazel called back that they were in the kitchen. Nick came into view. He was wearing his flightsuit and had a big smile on his face. “Here are my favorite people” he said. “Daddy!” The young boys at the dinner table rushed off their chairs and jumped into the opened arms of their dad. “My boys! How was your day?” He asked, hugging his sons close to him. “Daddy! I read a whole book today.” Mac told his dad, while smiling brightly. “A whole book?! Wow kiddo, you’re becoming as smart as your mom.” Nick said smiling up at his girlfriend. After talking about their exciting day in kindergarten, both boys went back to their activity.
“I have news” Nick said, hugging Hazel from behind while she was sturing a sauce in a pan. “Good news or bad news?” She asked, turning her head slightly to look into Nicks eyes. “Both, I guess” Nick put his chin on her shoulder. “Me and T-rex got into Top Gun” he said. Hazel eyes went wide and she turned around in his arms. “That’s amazing honey!” She said exciting, hugging him with her hands around his neck. “I’m so proud of you and T-Rex.” she said. T-Rex, government name: Connor Malcolm Oxland, was Nicks backseater. He got his callsign after eating two full racks of BBQ ribs faster than anyone else ate one. Someone commented that it was like watching a Tyronnosaurus eat.
“Yeah, we were very honored to be chosen especially since we only finished the academy a little longer than 1 year ago.” Nick and Connor were one of the best pilot and WSO duo the Navy had seen in years. It didn’t surprise Hazel that they were chosen to go to Top Gun. “Well what’s the bad news then, Lieutenant?” She asked kissing Nick on the cheek. Nick smiled. Ever since he got promoted to Lieutenant, Hazel couldn’t stop saying his rank. “I heard some officers talking in the hallway” he started. “The were talking about the Top Gun teachers that still won’t retire” Nick could feel Hazel stiffen up. Nick swallowed before continuing. “I’m 99 percent sure they were talking about our dads”

s1 episode 15 thoughts
oh boy this was a juicy one! after the previous mulder's ex reveal in 01x12, we get scully's ex reveal now! surely this indicates something...
so it starts with a bank robbery where jack and the robber get shot, the robber shot by scully herself. she means business! do not stand in her way!
then we see the jack in the hospital and they give up on trying to revive him, but she says that if they don't try, she'll do it herself. another example of dana scully NOT messing around. many such cases!
and it seems to work! miraculously! as the other fellow dies at the same time and a tattoo is seen leaving his skin!!! you know what that means: it's possession o'clock!
our now dead guy gets his fingers ripped off as possessed jack wants his wedding ring back, which lead me to writing in my notes, "scully you can't serve looks in a morgue" but by golly. she sure did. decorum be damned, she was serving.
when mulder makes a pit stop with scully to the classroom of a biologist at a maryland university, a question formed in my head: how many random faculty members of colleges and universities does mulder have easy contact with? because i feel like this happens A Lot. he must keep a list somewhere.
"the plot thickens," says mulder, upon learning that jack is scully's ex! they dated for a year, and he was her instructor at the academy! now surely that cannot be a thing that is encouraged. the FBI HR department must have been in a tizzy.
(in all honesty though. gross vibes from this man before and after possession. dating students, current or former, is generally frowned upon)
to try and prove that jack is possessed, mulder gets him to sign scully a birthday card, but that leads to a scene where he gives it to her and she pauses for a few seconds before telling him he's two months early.
now, i would have LOVED to be in her head for those few seconds. the "initial confusion -> at least he thought of me? -> hurt he didn't know my birthday -> ohhh this is one of those fox mulder schemes" train of thought must have been a roller coaster.
she thinks it's possible that he genuinely forgot her birthday- she says she even forgot her birthday once (which is Feb 23rd, by the way! a pisces!) because she was studying for her medical exams!
(i expect them to celebrate bountifully in her honor two months after the events of this episode to make up for that lost time!)
this jack fellow is very much possessed and he is VERY demanding to scully. she seems surprised by this, so i don't think he was like that pre-possession, but still, not great vibes off this guy with the whole instructor-student thing.
and then he switches up and kidnaps her. and i'm not sure which was worse: the fact that scully was handcuffed to a radiator, or that she had to sit through the guy who put her there explaining to a woman that he is actually her dead ex in a new body. another moment of great scully suffering.
when the kidnappers let mulder speak to scully, he calls her "dana" again, twice. his concern was showing!!!! i am a sucker for the "only calling someone by their last name to maintain formality until Something Bad Happens and their first name slips out" trope so this was adjacent to christmas for me! (and i eagerly await the first distressed yelling of "fox!")
AND THEN! he says to the kidnapper "listen to me, you lay one hand on Scully and so help me God..." OKAY! so since scully said something along those lines in episode 12, now BOTH of them have threatened to kill whoever hurts the other! <3
(and scully did it first! despite mulder being more outwardly protective! let's psychoanalyze THAT!)
we also witness the FBI agents being mean to mulder when he leaves the room :( spooky mulder the alien guy :( they don't see his vision :( workplace cliques are still a thing in the FBI :(
but he tells everyone that this mission is really important to him so they have to do their best which was. another emotional moment for me!
using a bible salesman as an undercover agent to confirm the kidnapper's identity was so funny. now every single time a missionary comes to my door i'm gonna think of that.
scully tried to get possessed jack to remember their times together in order to snap him out of the possession and he remembers their journey to his parent's cabin :( but he slowly dies due to a lack of insulin and then shoots his former accomplice which puts scully in a very difficult place emotionally. where do you even begin unpacking that?
mulder gives her the watch she had given jack as a birthday present and she notices that it stopped at the exact moment he was being revived, which mulder had earlier suggested was a sign of possession. she asks what it means.
mulder, in his infinite wisdom, waits and says, "it means whatever you want it to mean"
(which, i think, is the right thing to say. how do you tell your coworker that you think her ex was possessed upon the revival she insisted upon? how do you tell scully, who has a strict worldview shaped by science and facts, that someone she loved was lost beyond recognition? that the pain jack inflicted upon her wasn't even done by jack himself? how do you tell her that the man she once loved and spent the winter in a cabin with was gone long before he put a gun to her head, and that their last moments together weren't even genuine?
you don't. you set aside how desperately you want her to see the world as you do, as a place inhabited by unexplained phenomena just waiting to be studied. you tell her, gently, to make of it what she will, let her endlessly spinning mind search for a logical conclusion of her own to find her peace in. just once, you don't tell her you think it was otherworldly, no matter how long you've tried to get her to believe so in the past. you have some compassion, you sense her grief is heavy, and you tell her goodnight instead.)
#got emo with the last bit#not even sure i conveyed what i was trying to but i was very much trying to convey something#sigh it's about holding space for grief it's about letting people see the world in a way that brings them comfort#it's about setting aside your pride really#because he's the aliens and ghosts and ghouls guy but now he knows it's time to keep his mouth shut. that this one is too close to home.#let her rationalize it like she always does. it's enough grief to carry without implying the universe is fundamentally misunderstood.#hmm. do u see what i'm trying to say?#overall a good episode!#juni's x files liveblog#1x15#the x files#txf

From Austin
a/n: I wanted to try something a little different. Inspired by Zach Bryan’s song From Austin. You don’t have to listen to the song but it is a good song so you should. ;)
Pairing: Jake “Hangman” Seresin X Reader
Warnings: angsty-ish, questionable military accuracy
Word Count: 1100 ish
Summary: Jake reflects on his failed relationship.
Masterlist
Jake lets the whiskey roll over his tongue before swallowing; the rye burning his throat and settling heavy in his empty stomach. The pictures went up on social media today. Pictures of you in a white dress in the same cut you had worn to senior prom. You were smiling, dancing, and kissing the groom. A man who wasn’t him. He couldn't blame you, he was the one who had ended it and you had finally gotten what you wanted. Jake took another drink, at least the burn of the whiskey let him feel something.
When you and Jake had graduated he had given you a promise ring and left for the Naval Academy in Annapolis the same week. For four years you had flown to Maryland every chance you had to see him, and he had flown home to Austin just as often. That is when the fights had started. Not big fights but little arguments, you wanted more of him than the Navy would let him give. He should have known his relationship was doomed then, but he was blinded by love and the promise of a future with you.
After that it was flight school. He had done everything in his power to get stationed at Corpus Christi but his papers said Florida. You had cried, but it was only six months. You had spent four years apart. What was six more months?
He was flying and studying so much in those six months he barely had time to call let alone plan some type of visit. You had planned to come up to surprise him for his birthday. He had had last minute training scheduled and he hadn’t gotten to see you. You had called him from the airport while boarding the plane back to Texas. All he could do was apologize while you cried into the speaker.
Intermediate and advanced training was more of the same. He had requested Kingsville, Texas. Anything to get him in the same state as you. He remembers your face when he told you he was training in Meridian, Mississippi. “Ok,” was all you had said, “we will plan for when you are done training.”
Your disinterest had hurt more than your tears. You had gotten a job in a bank and had been working there for over a year when he was finally done training. You had built a life in Austin without him and you didn’t want to leave. He had begged you to come with him to Lemoore. His squadron was on Shore Duty for one more year when he was assigned. Eventually you had relented and the two of you moved in together.
It had been one of the happiest times in his life. The two of you rented a little bungalow and he got to wake up to the smell of your shampoo and the feel of you in his arms. There were little fights but he had been apart from you for almost six years at that point. It was natural that there would be an adjustment period. Your smile was the same. The spark that would light up your eyes when he came home was still there. There was still love in your kiss. He gave you everything the Navy didn't take first. But, in hindsight, it wasn’t enough. There was never enough of him left for you.
It was during the year in Lemoore he had bought the engagement ring. A halo diamond with diamonds in the band. Forget four months' salary. He had been saving since the Naval Academy. But the time was never right for the proposal. He would have weekend training, or you would have a bad day at work. Either way he never got around to it.
You had a hard time finding a job in Lemoore and ended up underemployed working as a receptionist. You hated the job, hated Lemoore. You loved him and that was the only thing keeping you there. When he was called away for training for a few weeks here and there it had not helped. The frustration in your eyes, when he packed to leave, was evident.
When he was up for deployment you were actually happy. You made arrangements to return to Austin while he was still in work ups. During his deployment contact had been infrequent. You had even declined to meet him in Hawaii when he had shore leave there. You had work and couldn't get away, or so you said. It was during that deployment he realized the relationship was over; it had felt like a punch to the gut.
Sitting across the table from you upon his return from his first deployment he knew he would have to be the one to end it. You loved him enough that you would never leave him but that was it. The commitment of a southern girl who wanted a life and a family he could never give.
Being a Navy wife wasn’t for you and Jake wanted to stay in the Navy after his initial commitment was up. You had been with him for over a decade and most of it was spent in different time zones. People ruin people. How much more of this relationship could you stand before you got bitter? Before your love turned to resentment?
He thought back to the day he had given you the promise ring. You had thrown your arms around his neck and kissed him, swearing you would never take it off. And it still circled the fourth finger on your left hand. After over eight years on your finger there was an indentation where it sat, an imprint of the love you had once shared and the vow of a future that would never be.
Jake took the ring off for you, releasing you from your promise. You didn’t fight him. You had just nodded in understanding and agreed it was for the best.
When he packed his truck and drove past the city limit sign of Austin he knew he would never be back. He could still see you in the passenger seat, the way you had looked when the two of you had first moved to Lemoore. The ghost of your smile living in his memory.
You had kept the promise ring but the engagement ring was currently sitting in the box in front of him with the lid open. The ring is still perfect, no scuffs and dirt from the love of everyday wear and tear. He picks up the ring and drops it in his glass before draining the contents, the ring rattling at the bottom with the ice until he adds more whiskey.

A past life
Bruce Whitefoot circa 1993
I’d like to honor the memory of my friend and past fire chief Doug Lorenson to this episode. Doug lost his long battle with leukemia at the too young of age of 35, and survived by 2 young children, and his Wife. Doug got on this department barely out of high school.
Thru the years, I’ve been a part of many organizations. Some of the day to day house keeping of these organizations was pure torture. Where as the main theme was glorious. I still support emotionally and spiritually at times the Fire Dept. But honestly, do not miss it.
The above shot, is 1993, before our house burned down. I had attended the National Fire Academy twice. Been fire chief. With some exciting stories to tell. Can of skoal in shirt pocket. National Fire Academy hat. And a huge fire/rescue belt buckle.
I was hard core fire dept member from 1978 to 1994. Then asked to come back again in 1999. In 99, I was going to make an attempt to get 20 years under my belt. In 99, I just barely made it as a member/chief another year, and just had to get out. I just couldn’t do it any more.... note “burned out”.
Initially, joined just after Luke was born. No idea what I was getting into. Didn’t know if I could handle fire fighting or rescue. But thought that I’d just give it a shot, and do the best I can.
The at that time the current, Dept. was poorly trained at best, and had the best of intentions of “surrounding and drowning” all fire incidents (good ol’ boy syndrome), which wasn’t all that uncommon with rural depts. across Nebraski. Some are still that way today.
There was no Waverly Rescue then, .... we depended on Greenwood for rescue, and we would be first responders until they arrived. The “trauma” kit consisted of bandages from the early 60′s (free Civil Defense over stock), and a demand valve on a small tank. No one on the dept, had any medical training to speak of except for one member (Mike Danley), maybe others with a little first aid. Sorry but he couldn’t make every call.
Mike at this time was just starting to organize funding/approval for Waverly to start their own rescue squad. It was very early stages here. Mike had been on another rescue squad in the past, and saw the need.
Greenwood rescue, over 48% of all of their medical calls were to Waverly at that time. So they were all about us getting our own too.
I had been on WFD for less than a year, when I joined up with the beginnings of the Rescue Squad and became a charter member. Helping promote funding, and starting training. Mike’s presence then was a beast. Ultimate respect for him. Big guy, with a huge sense of humor, and tons of knowledge.
We got the rescue up and running. We were separate from Fire, not common, but you’d see it here and there. So I became a dual member. In some ways it was a rough go. Not all fire or rescue members got a long. BUT every call it appeared everyone was attempting the same goal.
The local Rural Fire, and the City Council had never ever spent so much money in budget before. That was a battle to convince them to make the plunge. Members of both groups wanted the rescue, but didn’t want to spend the money. Good folks made hard choices.
Thru the years... experience flew in my itty bitty head, and a lot stuck/stayed there. I’ve done CPR 4 times, actual hands on, with 1 surviving, and 2 of them coming back for a short period. Several actual structural fires (we didn’t really have that many, but we were called by neighboring FD to assist [Mutual Aid]). Car accidents full of carnage.... nightmare fest. Chemical incidents. Hazardous matericals, law enforcement incidents, Etc. Etc.
Attended State Fire school in Grand Island every year I could. Took a few classes a couple of times.
Attended Rescue Schools in Kearney.
Attended National Fire Academy in Emmitsburg Maryland twice.
I was Doug Lorensons Assistant Chief on the FD, when we found out thru the grapevine we were considered “the best” fire/rescue this end of the State, and in the top 5 of the whole state, for volunteer FD and Rescue.
We could rock it.... oh lordy were we something back then. We held open seminars to any Dept’s that wished to attend. We trained heavily. Went to National Fire Academy.
A tiny fraction of our achievements: First rescue to learn “shock trousers”. Awarded Rescue Dept. of the year. Farm equipment rescue seminar (Waverly sponsored). School bus rescue seminar (Waverly sponsored). Pump class sponsored. Fire Fighter 1 class sponsored. Free CPR classes for members and general public and groups. Emotional stability class sponsored. Jaws of life class sponsored. Air Bag rescue class sponsored. Mutual aid water hauling class sponsored. First in our area to sign on with Bryan Heart Team (they were pre paramedic). First volunteer dept, in this area with their own air compressor (LFD would come out to Waverly to fill tanks time to time) .... Hi angle rescue training. on and on, simply amazing
Our money by this time (late 80′s) was rolling in from a Bingo Parlor sponsor. So our equipment was nothing short of top shelf. All the schooling a member could handle.
These were the days that employers would support employees that belonged to civil service groups.
For example I worked at Lincoln Hoot and Hollar. I could be working anywhere, and if I got a fire/rescue call, they would get me there if needed, and they would pay me, no questions asked.
LTT was not the only company that did this. It wasn’t uncommon. In this area now, you never hear of it, and folks would think you were nuts to even suggest it.
Week day calls were tough back then, even worse now. Members who could make these calls were over worked and rarely appreciated. Never enough folks for support. Mutual Aid calls were common, just to get physical bodies to help.
Calls as one can suspect, very unpredictable. Have a call everyday for months. Then go 6 months with nothing. Participated in days where we would have 5 in 1 day. 8 on a weekend.
Often appeared on big holidays were almost a promise. My house fire is a prime example.... Xmas morning.
One Xmas holiday we had 2 structure fires (2 mutual aid fatalities) and a frost bite call all within 24 hours.
Lots of blood and guts with I80 running thru our district. Upwards of 50% of our calls were on I80. Those calls could be very interesting also. Some very tough. One had several of our members reevaluating “what are we doing?”.
I won’t get into details here on these type of calls. They are not for open discussion to the public. More of a private conversation....
Still have some friends on the FD/rescue. But mostly I don’t know any of them. And I’d suspect they have never heard of me... especially since I’ve been gone since 1999.
Chief 2 times for total 3 years. Held every office of both organizations at one time or another. And a member of a separate appointment by the city council to “emergency preparedness”. CPR and Red Cross Safety Instructor for over 10 years. I taught to private groups and at LTT.
I do miss it at times. Believe it to be the adrenaline side of it. Miss that rush. Plus the afterglow when we really did something cool. Don’t miss butting heads with the government, or pig headed people.
President Reagan, did go out of his way to try and recognize and find money for the Volunteer Emergency Services of our country. At that time 85% of all emergency services were volunteer in our country. Other than being recognized I don’t think anything ever became of it.
Don’t know those numbers how they apply to todays world here in Waverlyland. I do know that they suffer dramatically on weekday calls.... worse than back then. I’ve heard because of this issue, it has taken its toll on existing members attitudes.
Find myself lucky to have survived all of this, and kept my head screwed on. Tough go at times.
Who knows what the future brings

Jim Lovell
James Arthur Lovell Jr. (/ˈlʌvəl/; born March 25, 1928) is an American retired astronaut, naval aviator, test pilot and mechanical engineer. In 1968, as command module pilot of Apollo 8, he became, with Frank Borman and William Anders, one of the first three astronauts to fly to and orbit the Moon. He then commanded the Apollo 13 lunar mission in 1970 which, after a critical failure en route, circled the Moon and returned safely to Earth.
A graduate of the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, in the class of 1952, Lovell flew F2H Banshee night fighters. This included a Western Pacific deployment aboard the aircraft carrier USS Shangri-La. In January 1958, he entered a six-month test pilot training course at the Naval Air Test Center at Naval Air Station Patuxent River, Maryland, with Class 20 and graduated at the top of the class. He was then assigned to Electronics Test, working with radar, and in 1960 he became the McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II program manager. The following year he became a flight instructor and safety engineering officer at Naval Air Station Oceana in Virginia Beach, Virginia, and completed Aviation Safety School at the University of Southern California.
Lovell was not selected by NASA as one of the Mercury Seven astronauts due to a temporarily high bilirubin count. He was accepted in September 1962 as one of the second group of astronauts needed for the Gemini and Apollo programs. Prior to Apollo, Lovell flew in space on two Gemini missions, Gemini 7 (with Borman) in 1965 and Gemini 12 in 1966. He was the first person to fly into space four times. One of 24 people to have flown to the Moon, Lovell was the first to fly to it twice. He is a recipient of the Congressional Space Medal of Honor and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. He co-authored the 1994 book Lost Moon, on which the 1995 film Apollo 13 was based. Lovell was featured in a cameo appearance in the film.
