Francisco Pham

Born to Vietnamese immigrants, Francisco Pham is a Baltimore-based artist who earned his BFA in Painting from the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA).

“Duc Me La Vang” (2022)

Riya Devi-Ashby

Riya Devi-Ashby, born in Silver Spring, Maryland, received her BA in Studio Art from Wesleyan University. She is also classically trained in Kuchipudi dance, which deeply influences her visual art.

So I started an AmeriCorps program this week where I get to teach underprivileged youth in Baltimore City about comics! I’m so excited! It’s a program started w the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA- one of the best art schools in the country) where I get to use their post office, print lab, and most importantly, their libraryyyyy (I can rent out 50 books at a time for SIX WEEKS) .

Here is the art I made the first week. I think the self portrait I made with glitter acne and removable mask are particularly inspired. On the back of the portrait (which is about the size of my entire upper back) I wrote on the left how I describe myself, and on the right is what fellow AmeriCorps members think of me.

Linling Lu

A Baltimore-based artist, Linling Lu holds a BFA and MFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA). Her works are included in the collections of The Phillips Collection, the Baltimore Museum of Art, and Johns Hopkins University.

“Agitated Meditation, No. 21"

This piece, created from found fabrics and objects from Southwestern China and the US, reflects Lu’s exploration of memory and place. Drawing inspiration from crazy quilting, the work weaves together fragments of time and geography, offering a meditative journey through textiles.

Sookkyung Park

Born in South Korea and now living in Maryland, Sookkyung Park specializes in paper-based artworks. After founding an Arts & Crafts studio in 1982 and later moving to the US, she earned an MFA from Towson University. Her works have been recognized in regional and international exhibitions.

“Wave V”

In this sculpture, Park folds thousands of small paper pieces to create a unified structure, symbolizing the strength found in human connection. The wave motif, representing resilience and hope, reflects the idea that society’s greatest strength lies in its unity.

"Ellen Lupton is a writer, curator, educator, and designer. Lupton is the Betty Cooke and William O. Steinmetz Design Chair at MICA (Maryland Institute College of Art) in Baltimore, where she has authored numerous books on design processes, including Thinking with Type, Graphic Design Thinking, Graphic Design: The New Basics, and Type on Screen. She serves as a senior curator at Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum in New York City. Recent exhibitions include Herbert Bayer: Bauhaus Master, Face Values: Understanding A.I., The Senses: Design Beyond Vision, Beauty—Cooper Hewitt Design Triennial, How Posters Work, and Beautiful Users. Her book Design Is Storytelling was published by Cooper Hewitt in 2017. She received the AIGA Gold Medal for Lifetime Achievement in 2007. She was named a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences in 2019."

María Fragoso (b. 1995, Mexico City) lives and works in Mexico City. She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Maryland Institute College Art (MICA) in Baltimore. Her residences include Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, Yale Norfolk School of Art, Vermont Studio Center Fellowship and Palazzo Monti. She attended the Studio Arts College International (SACI) study abroad program in Florence, Italy. Fragoso is represented by 1969 Gallery, New York, where she made her debut in Routine Malfunction, curated by Coady Brown and Pat Phillips.

2020 Campaign: Art+Activism

When we selected the theme of Art+Activism for the 2020 campaign, we could not have imagined what has happened this year. Despite the fact that many of our events were forced to be canceled due to the global pandemic, there is still much to celebrate!

In 2020, we celebrated Art+Feminism events in 6 continents, in 27 countries and 20 different languages.

We’ve spotlighted a few events in Peru, Brazil, Turkey, and Germany on our website. Participants this year created articles for Irma Poma Canchumani, Mavi Doñate, Rhina Toruño, Group Material, Kantarama Gahigiri Hertha Sponer, Marian Pastor Roces, Gabrielle L'Hirondelle Hill, Ingeborg Kahlenberg, People's Flag Show, Anne Marie Komissar, Kasturba Gandi, Guadalupe Rosales, Jota Mombaça, Bety Reis, Joana D’Arc da Silva Cavalcante, Djuena Tikuna, Olga Mariano, Lina Bögli and Anne Boyer, to name a few. We also want to acknowledge and thank all the organizers and partners whose events, unfortunately, weren’t able to move forward this year as planned. We recognize and celebrate your labor and efforts, as well. We are truly thankful for our global community!

As we continue to navigate virtual space together, we’ve created a Collaborative Virtual Resource Guide, along with Accessibility Considerations. We’ve also created a Remote Learning Resource List for teachers and professors preparing for the fall semester and beyond. We are actively creating and consolidating information for organizers for our next campaign.

And as we find ourselves simultaneously in a pandemic and in a civil rights movement, art + activism seem more pertinent than ever. We created a Collaborative List around the George Floyd Uprisings. We also recognize our own internal learning and unlearning that is necessary within our organization as we all strive to center interactional feminism and anti-racist practices. As part of that journey, we’re currently engaging internally with restorative practices training facilitated by harp+sword and the first phase of strategic planning with Wayfinding Partners.

Leadership Transition

Jacqueline Mabey and Siân Evans, co-founders of Art+Feminism, are stepping down from their roles as co-lead organizers involved with the day-to-day operations at the end of August. Even though this has been a planned transition for over a year, it’s bittersweet for the organization. What they started as a passion project among friends has grown into a global organization, and we’re forever grateful. They have both graciously served for seven years and we wouldn't be the organization we are today without their kindness, dedication, activism, and collaboration. They’re both already doing big things -  Jacqueline is starting a PhD in History of Art at University College London. Siân has recently stepped into the role of co-chair for the Staff Empowerment Council at Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA), where she is a librarian, and wants to spend more time on her writing and research. Please join us in celebrating them both and extending gratitude for all their tireless efforts. They will be missed.

We are delighted to share that in Fall 2020, the co-lead organizing team will consist of Amber Berson (Montréal, Quebec), Mohammed Sadat Abdulai  (Accra, Ghana), and Melissa Tamani (Lima, Peru). We are also happy to share that Project Administrator Nina Yeboah (Stone Mountain, GA) will be joining Kira Wisniewski (Baltimore, MD) as Art+Feminism’s full-time staff in the role of Program Manager starting this fall.

Regional Ambassadors play a key role in the development and success of a project that promotes editorial and content inclusivity in Wikipedia. At the core, Regional Ambassadors work with their region by establishing and nurturing relationships and managing communication and project pipelines alongside the leadership team. Regional Amabssadors have strong project management skills, a demonstrated history of work in social justice/community organizing, an interest in the arts and feminist work, and a working knowledge of the Wikipedia community or other online technology community. I hope everyone is KILLING their quarter or semester! I’m so sorry I’ve been MIA for nearly a month -- let’s just say it’s been the most hectic few weeks known to man.

In these past few weeks I have finished my thesis (at a grand total of 71 pages and more to go!), I have gotten accepted to TWO GRADUATE PROGRAMS, and I am planning on moving back to Colorado on 13 March. Which means I absolutely need to finish the rest of my undergraduate education with a completed 100 days of productivity!! Even though I haven’t counted the last month into my total, I really want to dedicate these last two weeks to completing that milestone, as well as the milestone of getting my BA degree from UCSB!!*~

The two graduate programs I’ve gotten accepted to?:

- University of Edinburgh College of Art - MSc Modern and Contemporary Art: History, Curating & Criticism

- Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA), Baltimore - MFA Curatorial Practice

I literally am beside myself -- I have worked so hard for this opportunity and I’m finally realizing all of it. It is also extremely surreal considering it is my last two weeks at UCSB, and I am trying to complete everything on my UCSB bucket list! Of course, going to the top of storke tower was the ultimate. <3
