Happy Frankenstein day!
Mary Shelley, author of "Frankenstein, or the Modern Prometheus", which was first published in 1818, was born on this day in 1797 🥳
I don't really want to post my art directly to this Tumblr, but I'm still deciding what my first post should be on my art blog, so I decided to just post it here just this once.
I am currently reading the 1831 updated version of the novel for the first time, after a year and a half of searching for the "right copy" (a decent-looking hardcover copy that wasn't insanely priced!).
I drew this over the last few days, using graphite and Aquarelle pencils 🫀
I did my best to copy her signature for her name at the bottom ✏️

ohhh to be a 19th century writer in a group with friends and alongside your lover, where you’re all writers.. and you all have a little competition to see who can write the best spooky story…. ~sigh~

Happy 226th birthday to Mary Shelley!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
“It is not singular that, as the daughter of two persons of distinguished literary celebrity, I should very early in life have thought of writing. As a child I scribbled; and my favourite pastime, during the hours given me for recreation, was to ‘write stories.’ Still I had a dearer pleasure than this, which was the formation of castles in the air — the indulging in waking dreams — the following up trains of thought, which had for their subject the formation of a succession of imaginary incidents. My dreams were at once more fantastic and agreeable than my writings. In the latter I was a close imitator — rather doing as others had done, than putting down the suggestions of my own mind. What I wrote was intended at least for one other eye — my childhood's companion and friend; but my dreams were all my own; I accounted for them to nobody; they were my refuge when annoyed — my dearest pleasure when free.”
— from the 1831 preface of Frankenstein.

My copy of Frankenstein. I reread it about a month ago. Mesmerized by the prose and vision of Mary Shelley again after all those years.

I just discovered that Mary Shelley and Kunikida share a birthday (August 30th), which is funny because Asagiri also made them similar in other ways (blond, glasses, abilities related to creating things, have beef with the government, etc.)

saddest part of college is we have no specific books that we're going through for class, just The Readings. no literature, just snippets from textbooks and papers about how to write. not even a short story in the mix. only The Readings.
