SHARON TATE as ODILE DE CARAY for ‘EYE OF THE DEVIL’, 1966. 🤍
“SHARON was asked to play this very difficult role, of a rather witchlike person. It was asking a newcomer to do a lot. She takes direction beautifully. Very soon she began to realise that the camera was a friend. ‘Could she do it?’ that was all in our minds. We even agreed that if after the first two weeks, SHARON was not quite making it, that we would put her back in cold storage. We started work. The moment that SHARON appeared on screen in her first rushes, we knew that this wonderful personality was going to make out. We all realised that here was a girl who was tremendously exciting. She had that thing that you cant really explain, star projection. I think this girl is going to be a big star.”
—J. LEE THOMPSON (Director, Eye of the Devil, 1966.)

spooky tuesday is a (now not so new!) podcast where we’re breaking down all of our favorite slashers, thrillers, monster movies and black comedies on the new scariest day of the week.
after last year’s halloween fifth tuesday, many discussions were had about how to celebrate the occasion again in 2024 — but, ultimately, there was only one answer that everybody was definitely 100% on board about and excited for and agreedcloris leachman, eric mccormack, and meshach taylor. on our latest episode of spooky tuesdayd childhoods with double, double, toil and trouble (1993), the made-for-tv movie starring mary-kate and ashley olsen. the tiny twins may have been well into building their empire by then (after all, they started as literal infants), but they were still getting used to the acting game, and it showed in their adorable performance as they kept accidentally looking into the camera. that said, they still gave a masterclass in sass, and they held their own amidst stars like cloris leachman, eric mccormack, and meshach taylor. on our latest episode of spooky tuesday, we’re enjoying the autumnal vibes and trying not to get too bogged down in ‘90s era problematic elements as we go on a little adventure and learn the magic words: jacuzzi jacuzzi!
give spooky tuesday a listen on apple podcasts, spotify, iheart radio, or stitcher

Some good Phantom moments from 2022:
Phantom anniversaries! Broadway’s 34th anniversary also marked Emilie Kouatchou’s first official principal Christine show (which also made her the first black principal Christine on Broadway).
Sydney Harbour! The first outdoor production of Phantom, complete with a chariot, fire, and ‘Point of No Return’ in the rain.
Unofficial photos! Melanie Gowie (London Phantom dresser and former Carlotta) and Greg Mills (Broadway swing) continue to stun with their unofficial backstage/onstage photos.
Live performances! Probably the biggest one was at the Queen’s Jubilee.
Raoul’s, Raoul’s, and more Raoul’s! While John Riddle killed it in Titanique, Jordan Donica, Paul Schaefer, and Jason Forbach all took turns as principal Raoul. Jordan’s return also marked the first time more than one black actor was in the trio at the same time on Broadway.
Restaged Tour! After being put off for a year, the Australian Restaged Tour finally opened featuring former London cast members Josh Piterman, Amy Manford, and Bridget Costello.
Non-replicas! Several non-replicas had performances this year, including Hungary. Budapest also had (or eventually will have) their first big cast change since the production opened over 20 years ago.
Korean production! Cast was officially announced for Phantom’s return to Korea.
Chinese production! The first production to actually be performed in Mandarin.
Diversity, Role Swaps, AND New Productions! Besides seeing some real progress in diverse casting across the board, there were also tons of former cast members that returned to various productions (mos tof the time due to Covid cases). Australia saw Josh Robson (Sydney Harbour Phantom) as Raoul and Claire Lyon (former World Tour Christine) show up in Melbourne. They both had to re-learn the show as it’s different staging and did so in less than two days.

So in this episode, we once more return to Victorian London where we meet Mary Ann Cotton (nee  Robson) a lovely wife and mother with the unfortunate curse of having her husbands and children die around her.  Digging deeper,  we begin to discover she is a poisoner with a body count somewhere in the range of 15 to 20, mostly her children, husbands and lovers,  We discuss her life, her history, how easilty arsenic was available to people at that time.  We give our thoughts and along the way even manage to touch on a few other things in this Victorian true crime episode of the Family Plot Podcast!

SHARON TATE on the set of ‘VALLEY OF THE DOLLS’, 1967. 🤍
"I am like JENNIFER (SHARON’S character in ‘VALLEY OF THE DOLLS’) because she is relatively simple, a victim of circumstances beyond her control. But I have more confidence in myself." —SHARON TATE

The Last-Minute Sci-Fi Gift Guide
There's only one thing worse than procrastinating on getting gifts for your loved ones, and that's procrastinating on putting together a guide to help out everyone else with all those gifts. It's Dec 12, so you can decide for yourself which I'm doing.
Tumblr media
Art book: Worlds Beyond Time, $32
If you follow this blog, you might have heard of this one. I published Worlds Beyond Time: Sci-Fi Art of the 1970s this year after five years of work on it, and I think it's really good! 400+ images, 100+ artists, with lots of fun art history and jokes.
Also, it's just $20 right now if you order through my publisher and use the code SKIPTHELINE! Cheapest it's ever been!
Tumblr media
Card game: Coup, $14
In this "social deduction" card game, you play as a government official in a future dystopia who needs to backstab their way into power. Everyone starts out with just two cards in this bluffing game, so the tide can turn pretty quick when players start assassinating each other's cards. The fast pace makes it a good gift for someone who loves spies but thinks they don't like card games.
Tumblr media
Game to play over Zoom: Bad Spaceships, $3
If a bluffing game stresses you out, try Bad Spaceships: It's a collaborative world-building game in which you roll dice to see what area of your spaceship connects to another, forcing you to spitball exactly why this is the case. As the game puts it, you might fix the hull by playing Tetris, or charge your weapons in the swimming pool. You're basically getting weird prompts to tell a story that can evolve over the course of the game.
It's such an indie game that it comes as PDFs you download from itch.io, but you can play it just as well over Zoom, if you're looking for an excuse to catch up with your old digital nomad college friend.
Tumblr media
Movies/TV: Streaming service gift card
Gift cards are all well and good, but you can personalize them by recommending a few of your favorite shows as well. I suggest:
Hulu: Cowboy Bebop
Apple TV+: Severance
Criterion Channel: Ravenous, Paprika, Strange Days
Paramount+: Yellowjackets
Amazon Prime: The Devil's Hour
But to be honest, this entry is just an excuse to talk about the new Max show Scavenger’s Reign. Inspired by the work of French artist Moebius and with a clear debt to famed 70s animated film Fantastic Planet, this stylish sci-fi show features a bunch of humans trying to survive on a beautiful but hostile alien world. Perfect for lovers of fictional nature.
Tumblr media
Vintage sci-fi
This Etsy shop has some good stuff, like the 1971 Frank Kelly Freas NASA poster above, a bit of history that I even mentioned on page 167 of my art book.
Tumblr media
Penguin science fiction postcards, $28
These postcards have a ton of very cool sci-fi covers I've blogged in the past – great value if you want a lot of art for a low cost.
Tumblr media
Meteorite pendant necklace, $34
I think we all know what kind of rock your loved ones need around their neck: A chunk of meteorite straight out of the 1576 Argentinan meteorite fall.
Tumblr media
Book recs
For astronauts: Packing for Mars by Mary Roach, The New Guys: The Historic Class of Astronauts That Broke Barriers and Changed the Face of Space Travel by Meredith Bagby
For comedians: Gideon the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir, Even Greater Mistakes: Short Stories by Charlie Jane Anders
For sleuths: Six Wakes by Mur Lafferty, Drunk on All Your Strange New Words by Eddie Robson
For crafters: Knits of Tomorrow: Toys and Accessories for your Retro-Future Needs
For the resistance fighters: The Light Brigade by Kameron Hurley, An Unkindness of Ghosts by Rivers Solomon
For slasher movie fans: Clown in a Cornfield by Adam Cesare
Tumblr media
Syd Mead "Biomorph Vehicle" button down shirt, $49
T-shirts aren't classy enough for the world's coolest visual futurist, Syd Mead. I haven't actually bought this incredibly odd shirt, but I really need to.
Tumblr media
Art prints (and more) from 70s sci-fi artists
Artist shops can be surprisingly hard to track down on the internet, but here's a short list of ones I've come across. All of these artists are featured in my book (except one), so you can read up on them before you commit to a print.
Michael Whelan
John Harris
Syd Mead
Don Maitz
David B Mattingly
Peter Andrew Jones - Jones was one of just a few artists who declined to be included in my art book, but he has a distinct, colorful style that I would have loved to have featured!
Finally, here's one extra bonus, just for everyone who made it to the end of this article: The UK-based educational charity Centre for Computing History sells three big officially licensed John Harris posters featuring these three artworks, famous for their use as covers for Sinclair programming manuals.
Tumblr media
It's a great deal that I've never seen mentioned anywhere, and Harris' work has a timeless quality that makes it great for an unassuming wall decoration. If you're outside the UK, the shipping costs will be a pain, but there's no better deal for a classic sci-fi poster.

Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sister: That’s why they gotta stop announcing everything they do in this show, like...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sister: I feel like [Norma’s] just dead at this point.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sister: I feel like they’re leading up to him being like a mass shooter or something. Me: You think he’s gonna snap? Sister: He seems like the type...
Tumblr media
Sister: …I think being free would making him happy. I mean, [Toby] had that whole vision about being free that did not include [Chris], so I think he’ll be fine.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sister: You can just tell them anything and they’ll let you through…
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sister: What’s wrong with this guy? What’s he in for? Me: Hate crimes… Murder, officially, I think. Sister: Hate crime? What’s he sniffing people for? Me: He's just a perv...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sister: …That’s so gross… In my sickened state*, I can’t even summon a bleugh. Me: [Retching noise] Sister: Thanks. (*We got some booster shots yesterday and Sister always gets sick afterward lol)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sister: When are they going to address that guy whose wife also died? Me: Never. Sister: So why did they introduce her?! To spout off some facts and get shushed by the priest?? Me: Maybe there was originally supposed to be more of a story to it and it go cut. Sister: No, they just wanted to do their little after school special moment and then not deal with it. You know, if any of the Muslims should be having the issues in these episodes, it should be the other guy (Arif), not Mr. Said... Me: They could have issues together. Sister: Yeah. Kill the Nazi helper dude. The one who's egging everything on. Schillinger doesn't even really do stuff on his own anymore. Before, he didn't want to fight and wanted to become a Jesus freak and it was always that guy whispering in his ear. And now look.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sister: How we know he’s not gonna build a bomb in there? … Oh, I guess they took away all the cleaning supplies…
Stray Thoughts
Sister says Jia Kenmin and Li Chen’s plan to provoke Ryan so they could kill him in self defense was really not thought-out
Sister is convinced that someone is going to die for one of the dogs
Sister believes that killing Robson would get rid of most of the Aryans’ bite since she views him as being the worst out of all the Aryans
Final thoughts
The scene where Robson and what’s his face torture Lalar is the toughest scene to watch in the entire show, imo. And it pisses me off (like, I’m actually getting mad thinking about it right now, lol) that Robson gets more expansion in terms of character as the show progresses, too, because whooooooooo gives a shit about a Nazi?! They still haven’t followed up on Arif’s wife LMAO. Also Urbano gets introduced this episode and they don’t end up doing shit with him, really, either. But let’s learn about this asshole!!
Sister: I feel like they’ve run out of storylines with the Muslims and are just repeating past ones. Wasn’t it [Arif] who was the one complaining about Said’s leadership the last time? And then he couldn’t handle it which caused the whole thing… and now he’s doing it again? Me: I think they just don’t like when Said helps other people. They complained when Said was spending time on Beecher, too… Sister: Yeah, [Arif] is so needy… He’s like “you’re spending too much time with your roommate who you have to stay in a cell with” and also every time he is around, [Said] just wants [Omar] to be quiet anyway…
