The country filled with cricketers also gave birth to Mary Kom (Boxing), PV Sindhu (Badminton), Manu Bhaker (shooting) The Phogat sisters (Wrestling), Neeraj Chopra (Javelin), Men's and Women's hockey teams across the ages. Even getting a Bronze medal is a huge deal for us because from a young age we are taught, "Padhoge, likhoge tho banoge Nawab. Kheloge, Kudoge tho bange kharab" (If you study, you will live like a king but if you play, you will go bad). But these amazing people have showed us that Khelne aur Kudne se bhi ham Nawab ban sakte hain (We can become kings by playing also). While I was thrilled to see fellow Asian countries like Turkey and South Korea get positive rep for their shooters, the Indian shooter, Manu Bhaker, won 2 bronze (10m singles and 25m mixed) and came fourth in 25m singles, be ignored. This actually were our first medals in shooting after 12 years and our first in mixed pairs. The only ones who reported it were the desiblr and Indian reporting sites.

All parents and schools care about are how well you can mug up stuff. Talent is stifled because of the pressure of grades (there is a guy in my class who is a national champion in Table Tennis and has participated in many inter-state Football championships while representing his state and attended many National Football camps but he is not allowed to play during games period because he gets 25/40 as an average in our tests)

There is so much investment in Cricket and Football but there is hardly anything in niche sports like Shooting, Archery, etc. The players have to work 2 jobs and then come to practice. There are unfair calls (Hockey Quaterfinals) and when we try to protest against said unfair calls, a key player gets banned. There is also a case of racism where a Woman is disqualified from the finals for being 100 fucking GRAMS overweight for 50kg wrestling category where usually if a person is 50-100g overweight they are allowed to compete

But still we are on those podiums with necklaces of success around our neck. Still there is a kid who dreams to stand there one day. Still there is hope for just one more medal, still there is hope for one more record. Still there are prayers of thousands. Still we are there and we will always be there.

"First world" countries will never understand how much an Olympic/world championship medal means to Brazilians (and other "developing nations").

There are barely any scholarships for athletes, there are barely any endorsements or sponsorships. There's no infrastructure, no incentive...

"Biased" Probe Panel Trying To Protect Brij Bhushan, Allege Wrestlers

The government-formed six-member panel, led by the legendary Indian boxer MC Mary Kom, had submitted its report to the government but it was not made public.

New Delhi: The women wrestlers have questioned the intent of the oversight panel that probed the sexual harassment accusations against WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh and alleged that it was biased towards him, said the charge-sheet filed by the Delhi Police in the sensational case.

The outgoing WFI chief is scheduled to appear before a trial court today in pursuance of summons issued against him and the Federation’s Assistant Secretary Vinod Tomar.

The government-formed six-member panel, led by the legendary Indian boxer MC Mary Kom, had submitted its report to the government but it was not made public.

The complainants, in their separate statements, alleged that the panel appeared biased towards Singh, who is also a BJP MP.

The charge-sheet that runs into 1599 pages, contained statements of 44 witnesses, besides six statements by the complainants which were recorded under CrPC 164.

“Even after giving my statement before the (oversight) committee whenever I visited the Federation office, the accused looked at me with distasteful and lustful eyes and made wrong gestures which made me feel insecure,” said one of the complainants.

“Even the video recording was being switched off and on while I was giving my statement and in spite of my request the committee did not supply me a copy of my video recording. I fear that my statement may not have been recorded in entirety and may also have been tampered with to protect the accused,” the statement of the wrestler read further.

Another complainant said that she was made a part of the WFI sexual harassment committee to look into such cases without her consent. All national sports federations are supposed to have Internal Complaints Committee.

“I was never issued any formal communication informing me about such approval, nor was any formal communication was received by me seeking my approval to be part of the sexual harassment committee of the Wrestling Federation of India.

“The accused, in conspiracy with accused №2 and other unknown persons, has deliberately done this to suppress my voice and allegations against him. He has, without my approval or consensus, made me part of the said committee and is now alleging that in spite of being part of the committee, I am falsely alleging to be a victim myself,” said the complainant.

The same ‘victim’ also alleged that the oversight panel did not provide her the recording when demanded.

“I had serious doubts that that my statement on video may not have been recorded in entirety or may have been altered in an attempt to protect the accused and thus I requested for a copy of the video recording. However members of the oversight committee flatly turned down my request.” Delhi police had justified not arresting the accused, saying both Singh and WFI Assistant Secretary Tomar complied with the law by joining the investigation.

“Results of digital/electronic devices and exhibits seized and deposited with the concerned Forensic Labs are yet to be received and shall be filed through supplementary police reports. The analysis of requisitioned CDRs etc., as found appropriate for the purpose of prosecution shall also be submitted expeditiously,” the police said in the charge-sheet.

Women’s panel summons Delhi Police for failing to arrest Brij Bhushan Singh in POCSO case

The Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) chairperson Swati Maliwal issued a summons to Delhi Police for failing to arrest Brij Bhushan Singh in connection with the two FIRs registered against him for sexual harassment.

Over the past several days, wrestlers have been protesting at Jantar Mantar in Delhi, demanding the arrest of Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan, accused of sexual harassment.

On Tuesday, the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) chairperson Swati Maliwal issued a summons to Delhi Police for failing to arrest the accused person in connection with the two FIRs registered against him on April 28, pertaining to sexual harassment allegations, including violations under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

Singh is accused of sexually harassing women wrestlers, including a minor. The wrestlers had gone to the Connaught Place police station on April 21 to file a complaint against him. However, the police did not register an FIR back then.

Thereafter, the women approached the Supreme Court. Then, on April 28, two FIRs were registered, one under the POSCO Act for sexually harassing a minor while another FIR was registered for sexual harassment with other complainants.

After the DCW learned that no accused has been arrested in the matter to date.

In this regard, DCW chief Swati Maliwal issued a summons to the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) New Delhi district and has sought an explanation in the matter. The Commission has sought details of arrests made in the matter and has asked for reasons for the non-arrest of accused persons.

Furthermore, the Commission has asked for reasons for failing to record statements of survivors under 164 CrPC along with details of action taken against concerned police officers for failing to record the statement. The Commission has asked the DCP to appear before the Commission on May 12 with an action taken report.

DCW chief Swati Maliwal stated, “It is very unfortunate that no accused in the matter has been arrested till date. Also, Delhi Police has failed to record statements of survivors under 164 CrPC even. This is very serious. The accused should be arrested immediately and statement of survivors should be registered. Also, action should be taken against concerned police officers for failing to record their statement under 164 CrPC.”

Several top wrestlers, including Vinesh Phogat, Sakshi Malik and Bajrang Punia, have been protesting at Delhi's Jantar Mantar seeking Brij Bhushan Singh's arrest and ouster from the federation.

In the face of growing protests, Brij Bhushan Singh, who has remained defiant of not quitting his post, said he would hang himself if even a single allegation against him is proved.

Top wrestlers first came out in protest against the WFI chief in January, accusing him of sexual exploitation. They had demanded that WFI be disbanded and its president be removed. The sports ministry then formed an oversight committee headed by boxing great MC Mary Kom on January 23 and asked it to submit its findings in one month. The government is yet to make the findings public.

On May 3, a scuffle broke out between the wrestlers and some police personnel, leading to head injuries to a couple of protesters. The wrestlers alleged they were manhandled by the police personnel, but Delhi Police denied they used force against the grapplers.

Elaborate security arrangements have been made at Jantar Mantar. Security forces have been deployed and activities at the protest site are being monitored round the clock through CCTVs to ensure that no untoward incident takes place.

Serious matter: Supreme Court issues notice on wrestler's plea seeking FIR against Brij Bhushan

The bench said and ordered redaction of names of complainant wrestlers from judicial records with a view to suppress their identities.

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Tuesday issued notice to the Delhi government on a plea of seven women wrestlers seeking direction to the Commissioner of Delhi Police of registering FIR against WFI President Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh for allegedly assaulting women wrestlers.

Noting that there are serious allegations in the plea, a bench of CJI DY Chandrachud and Justice PS Narasimha while seeking response from GNCTD posted the plea for Friday. Court also directed for redacting the identities of the petitioners.

Appearing for the wrestlers, Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal though they have been complaining of sexual harassment by Singh, the authorities have not taken steps to register FIR against him. “Even the police persons can be prosecuted for not registering an offence of this nature. On allegations of sexual assault, no FIRs have been lodged,” Sibal said.

Many renowned Indian wrestlers including Vinesh Phogat, Bajrang Punia and Sakshi Malik in January had accused Singh and WFI coaches for sexually harassing female grapplers.

After meeting with the wrestlers although the Sports Minister Anurag Thakur on January 24 had announced the formation of an oversight committee led by MC Mary Kom, the committee was tasked with overlooking the day-to-day activities of WFI and the allegations against Singh. But the stir was renewed on Sunday at Jantar Mantar where the wrestlers sat on dharna pursuant to them being unhappy with the committee’s report and Delhi Police’s inaction in filing the FIR.

The complaint was filed by seven of the country’s top wrestlers, Olympic medallists and multiple world championship, medalists including a minor.

"This time, all parties are welcome to join our protest whether it is BJP, Congress, AAP, or any other party," Olympic medallist Bajrang Punia said.

New Delhi: India's top wrestlers have resumed their protest in Delhi's Jantar Mantar against Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief and BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, accusing him of sexually harassing several athletes. The wrestlers who called off their protest earlier this year after assurances that a committee would probe the allegations say that they will remain at the protest site till police file a complaint against Brij Bhushan.

"We will not believe anyone blindly. Last time we were misled. We hope this time there is no politics in this case," says Vinesh Phogat, the first Indian woman wrestler to win gold at both the Commonwealth and Asian Games.

The protesters also said that this time they will not turn down anyone, and whoever wants to support their protest could come and join them. In January, the protesters had request left leader Vrinda Karat to leave the stage as it was an "athletes protest".

"This time, all parties are welcome to join our protest whether it is BJP, Congress, AAP, or any other party. We are not affiliated with any party," Olympic medallist Bajrang Punia said.

Seven women wrestlers have filed a sexual harassment complaint against federation chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh at the Connaught Place police station in Central Delhi. The protesting athletes claim that no action has been taken yet and they will continue their agitation till the police register an FIR in the case.

The wrestlers claim that they had ended their protest in January over "false assurances."

"We will sit here day and night. Till the time we don't get justice. We will sit here," Ms Phogat said, after spending the night on the footpath.

"We have been trying to contact them (Sports Minister Anurag Thakur and other relevant authorities) for three months. The members of the committee are not responding to us, sports ministry has also not said anything, they don't even pick up our calls. We have won medals for the country and have put our careers at stake for this," she added.

In January, the sports ministry formed a five-member committee, which was headed by Olympic medallist boxer MC Mary Kom, to investigate the complaints. The committee had been instructed to submit its findings within a month.

Wrestler Sakshee Malikkh expressed frustration over the report on the issue by the panel not being made public yet.

"We want the report, which has recorded women wrestlers' statements, to be public. It's a sensitive issue, one of the complainants is a minor girl," she said, adding that the names of the complainants must not be leaked.

The government panel submitted its report in the first week of April, but the ministry is yet to make its findings public. However, sources said the wrestlers could not prove the sexual harassment allegations against the WFI boss after several hearings.

Several wrestlers had gone public with the accusations against federation chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh on January 18. The elite wrestlers had said they weren't satisfied after talks with the government and "won't wrestle another day" till their demands are met. Alleging mismanagement in the functioning of the federation, they demanded a complete overhaul of the federation.

Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh has said that he will not contest for the president's post in the WFI election on May 7 but hinted that he might look for a new role within the federation. He has served three four-year terms as president in a row and according to the Sports Code after completing 12 years as WFI chief, he is ineligible to contest for the top post.

Mary Kom has been the subject of a few negative headlines over the past few months. She has been battling her way through all of them in front of cameras and microphones but now, she is getting back in the ring, where she has managed to squat away most of the challenges that have come her way in a nearly two-decade long career.
