Shobhit Rajan says, "Double world champion Nikhat Zareen might be India’s best chance for a first-ever Olympics boxing gold".
Fuelled by a strong desire to challenge stereotypes and societal norms, India’s Nikhat Zareen took up boxing as a 13-year-old.
The young fighter from a quaint neighbourhood in Nizamabad in the southern state of Telangana dreamed of becoming the best female boxer in India, but little did she know she would exceed even that lofty aspiration.
Zareen’s promising career began with a resounding victory at the Youth World Championships in 2011. And 11 years later, in 2022, she clinched gold in the 52kg category at the senior World Championships – a feat that positioned her alongside the legendary boxer Mary Kom, who won India’s first-ever Olympic medal in women’s boxing at the 2012 London Games.
In a strategic move, Zareen transitioned to the 50kg category in 2023, aligning with the weight class featured in the Paris 2024 Olympic roster, and promptly secured her second IBA World Championship gold medal.
Having consolidated her position as the boxer to beat in her division, Zareen has emerged as one of the strong medal chances at the Paris 2024 Olympics, which begin on July 26.
Only two Indian female boxers have ever won an Olympic medal: Kom’s 2012 bronze came in the Flyweight division and Lovlina Borgohain collected a bronze in the Welterweight division at Tokyo 2020.
An Olympic gold medal for Zareen would elevate her into the pantheon of Indian boxing greats alongside the six-time world champion, Kom.
Ahead of the Paris Olympics, Zareen spoke to Al Jazeera about her early days in boxing, growing up in an orthodox family and her goals for the future.

"All Parties Welcome": Wrestlers On #MeToo Protest In Delhi Change Tack
"This time, all parties are welcome to join our protest whether it is BJP, Congress, AAP, or any other party," Olympic medallist Bajrang Punia said.
New Delhi: India's top wrestlers have resumed their protest in Delhi's Jantar Mantar against Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief and BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, accusing him of sexually harassing several athletes. The wrestlers who called off their protest earlier this year after assurances that a committee would probe the allegations say that they will remain at the protest site till police file a complaint against Brij Bhushan.
"We will not believe anyone blindly. Last time we were misled. We hope this time there is no politics in this case," says Vinesh Phogat, the first Indian woman wrestler to win gold at both the Commonwealth and Asian Games.
The protesters also said that this time they will not turn down anyone, and whoever wants to support their protest could come and join them. In January, the protesters had request left leader Vrinda Karat to leave the stage as it was an "athletes protest".
"This time, all parties are welcome to join our protest whether it is BJP, Congress, AAP, or any other party. We are not affiliated with any party," Olympic medallist Bajrang Punia said.
Seven women wrestlers have filed a sexual harassment complaint against federation chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh at the Connaught Place police station in Central Delhi. The protesting athletes claim that no action has been taken yet and they will continue their agitation till the police register an FIR in the case.
The wrestlers claim that they had ended their protest in January over "false assurances."
"We will sit here day and night. Till the time we don't get justice. We will sit here," Ms Phogat said, after spending the night on the footpath.
"We have been trying to contact them (Sports Minister Anurag Thakur and other relevant authorities) for three months. The members of the committee are not responding to us, sports ministry has also not said anything, they don't even pick up our calls. We have won medals for the country and have put our careers at stake for this," she added.
In January, the sports ministry formed a five-member committee, which was headed by Olympic medallist boxer MC Mary Kom, to investigate the complaints. The committee had been instructed to submit its findings within a month.
Wrestler Sakshee Malikkh expressed frustration over the report on the issue by the panel not being made public yet.
"We want the report, which has recorded women wrestlers' statements, to be public. It's a sensitive issue, one of the complainants is a minor girl," she said, adding that the names of the complainants must not be leaked.
The government panel submitted its report in the first week of April, but the ministry is yet to make its findings public. However, sources said the wrestlers could not prove the sexual harassment allegations against the WFI boss after several hearings.
Several wrestlers had gone public with the accusations against federation chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh on January 18. The elite wrestlers had said they weren't satisfied after talks with the government and "won't wrestle another day" till their demands are met. Alleging mismanagement in the functioning of the federation, they demanded a complete overhaul of the federation.
Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh has said that he will not contest for the president's post in the WFI election on May 7 but hinted that he might look for a new role within the federation. He has served three four-year terms as president in a row and according to the Sports Code after completing 12 years as WFI chief, he is ineligible to contest for the top post.

All in ~one~ women That person's an "all in one", such an all-rounder! Well! We have discussed a lot of all-in-ones, now let's talk about "all in women". No no, it's not something I made up, well, maybe I did! But duh! Look how creative and so apt! Women are themselves and so much more. They hold such great power and enthusiasm. They have commitment and are strong enough to live up to it. They are everywhere and even excel the field they strive for. Such a powerful gender, it surprises me. What can't a woman do? They can work and run your family. They are bosses, they are captains, they fly, they can dive. In the work today where people still debate on feminism, women work despite the validation. You may not know these women or notice them but they are fighting and winning everyday. From the maid who works to take care of her kids on her own to the CEO of your favourite byju's app your kids depend on, these women are setting examples in every field. You question a woman on courage? Flight Lieutenant Avani Chaturvedi, a young Indian Air Force officer, became the first Indian woman fighter pilot to fly the ‘MiG-21 Bison’ solo. The MiG-21 Bison is known for its highest take-off and landing speed in the world at 340 kmph. You question a woman on strength? Mary Kom is also the only woman boxer to have won a medal in all seven world championships, making it a world record. You question a woman on speed? Hima Das is the first Indian athlete (sprint runner) to win gold at the IAAF World Under-20 Athletics Championship in 2018 You question a woman on self reliance? Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw is ranked 60th on the Forbes’ list of most powerful women in the world and is the richest self-made woman billionaire of India. You question a married woman's career? A graduate of IIM, Ahmedabad, Falguni Nayar start her own health and beauty brand, now famously known as Nykaa. Today, Nykaa is evaluated at $750 million. If I start writing, the list won't end. This was just a sneak peek into the "all the women". Told you right? This gender is capable and charismatic! - Ynri War from @just.lemmebe https://www.instagram.com/p/Ca4og8yJV5E/?utm_medium=tumblr

All right, day 7 of women’s boxing at the 2020 Olympic games is going to begin in a bit so here are some good things to know. We got two divisions going today - lightweight and welterweight.
Women’s welterweight is having its quarterfinals meaning that the women that win tonight will have officially won a medal for their country as the winners advance to the semis and are guaranteed at least bronze.
If you’re an American, the boxer you’re probably pulling for is Oshae Jones. The 23 year old Ohio native won her first fight in the round of 16 after a bye round and is a former Pan Am games champion. She’ll be facing off with a familiar opponent, a woman she beat at the 2019 Pan Ams en route to gold there, the Dominican Republic’s María Moronta. Unfortunately for India, Mary Kom was eliminated yesterday meaning her Olympic career has come to an end. There is a 23 year old trying to replace her as the face of women’s boxing in the country in Lovlina Borgohain. She’ll be facing Taipei’s Chen Nien-chin. Rounding out the other two quarterfinals will be silver medalist at the world championships Gu Hong of China as she faces off with Acinda Panguana of Mozambique and world champion Busenaz Sürmeneli of Turkey facing off with Ukrainian Anna Lysenko.
Women’s lightweight is were a lot of the best talent is so it’s going to action packed. They’re completing the round of 16, so we have 8 fights on the docket.
Tournament favorite, Kellie Harrington of Ireland is set to make her debut at the games as she faces off with Rebecca Nicoli of Italy. American Rashida Ellis has a tall task ahead of her as she’s going to be facing off with rising star Caroline Dubois out of Great Britain. Brazil’s Beatriz Ferreira, a 2019 world champion, will also be making her Olympic debut against Wu Shih-yi of Taipei. 2016 silver medalist Mira Potkonen of Finland (last women to beat Katie Taylor) will also be fighting, as she’s set to face off with Korean Oh Yeon-ji. Bunch of other good fights too at the weight but you get the idea.
