Rewatching one of my favourite longforms from Shoot from the Hip. .
Did you know Chip's name in The Cardboard Stegosaurus was originally Bradley. . Then Sam changed his own characters name to Chip because Cliff and Chip would be funnier. . especially since the dead mom was called Marie Claire. Since I had forgotten that happened till I rewatched.

Jessica Biel & Jennifer Garner for Marie Claire, March 2010
"She's not that tall, but you can tell she's strong," says Jessica Biel, talking about her 55-pound pit bull mix — but she could just as well be talking about herself. Biel and I are discussing our love for our dogs (she sleeps with hers as I do with mine) as we wait for her new best friend, Jennifer Garner, to join us for dinner at Madeo, a legendary Italian restaurant in Beverly Hills where Al Pacino is said to keep a standing reservation. The hostess has seated us in a booth in the farthest corner from the door in an attempt to offer some privacy, but Biel's beauty can't go unnoticed. Fresh from a taping of The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien, Biel has her hair perfectly styled, her makeup perfectly applied. There are sequins sparkling on the T-shirt under her open cardigan sweater. And just moments ago, the whole restaurant watched as she gracefully strode toward this back booth.
Underneath the glitter and gloss, Biel is the real thing. At 27, she has been able to figure out how to take life seriously without taking herself so. I become aware of this when we continue our bonding over the climb she has planned up Mount Kilimanjaro. (I climbed the same mountain a few years back.) One of a group of environmental activists and artistic types who have named their trek Summit on the Summit, Biel is climbing the mountain to call attention to the world's clean-water problem. More children, she informs me, die from polluted drinking water than from AIDS and malaria combined — one child every 15 seconds.
A murmur sweeps through the room, a sound not unlike the low roll of wind along the high heathered regions of Mount Kilimanjaro, as a slightly harried Jennifer Garner rushes through the restaurant and slips into our booth.
"Sorry I'm late, but I got lost and—" Garner stops herself upon seeing the gussied-up Biel. "You look gorgeous!" she exclaims. "And look at me. I didn't even change my clothes to come here," she says in the exhausted-but-happily-so tone of a mother with two young children. Garner, 37, is dressed in a black cotton turtleneck and black jeans. She wears no makeup at all, and her hair is pulled back in a ponytail. She possesses an incongruous combination of sexual charisma and girl-next-door normalcy. There is no artifice about her — it is the essence of her appeal. She is Sandra Dee—nuded.
The two stars became fast friends on the set of the film Valentine's Day, a kind of American version of Love Actually with a roster of stars that includes Julia Roberts, Anne Hathaway, Patrick Dempsey, Bradley Cooper, Ashton Kutcher, Jamie Foxx, Jessica Alba, and Shirley MacLaine. Biel plays a single sports publicist who hates the holiday; Garner's character has an affair with an obstetrician played by Dempsey and discovers late in the movie that he's not what he appears to be.
"We don't work with a lot of women on our films," says Garner, explaining why she and Biel connected during the shoot. "And I haven't worked much at all lately, to tell you the truth. The two weeks I worked on this movie were the only two weeks I've worked in about a year-and-a-half because of being pregnant and now having a 1-year-old. But when I do work, it's always one woman and a bunch of men in my casts — maybe my character has a friend in the script, but not always. It's odd. So on this film, it was great to have someone like Jessica around, even though most of our scenes as best friends were over the phone."
"And do you find this true, Jennifer?" Biel asks. "I know I do: You never really bond with all the guys in your cast like they do with each other." Biel is nevertheless excited to tell Garner about her work "shooting N4 machine guns and 9-millimeter Berettas" on the A-Team movie she's making with Cooper, Liam Neeson, and Patrick Wilson.
The waiter approaches our table. "I'd like some wine," says Garner. "I never go out much anymore, so I'm going to have a glass of wine. This is living it up to me now." The women each order an appetizer, a main course, and an order of pasta Bolognese to be shared by the three of us.
"Oh, I heard the sweetest story about Violet the other day," says Biel, mentioning Garner's 4-year-old daughter (older sister of 1-year-old Seraphina). "One of Violet's classmates came up to her and said, 'I heard Jennifer Garner lives in your house.' And Violet said, 'No, she doesn't.' The other kid kept insisting, so Violet came home and asked you, 'Mom, who is Jennifer Garner and why are people saying she lives with us?'"
Garner downs almost half her glass of wine at hearing the story. "Wow. That's true," she says, then pauses, considering whether to give more credence to it. "She just knows me as Mom, so I did have to explain to her for the first time about the difference." She takes another sip. "I'm just holding down the fort while Ben works right now," she says, mentioning her famous husband, Ben Affleck, who has 10 more days of filming The Town, a movie he wrote, is directing, and stars in. "I'm so impressed by his discipline. He gets up and works out every day at 4 a.m. before heading off to work. Every day. I used to do that sometimes for Alias," Garner says of the television show that made her a star (and won her a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Drama Series as well as a SAG Award and four Emmy nominations). "But not every day. And I'd do it for 30 minutes, maybe 45. He does it for an hour-and-a-half. He comes home and collapses, and then rewrites scenes for the next day, then crashes and does it all over again. He's worn out. Jon Hamm is in it, too. It's kind of a heist movie, and Hamm plays the FBI guy."
"Mmmm ... Don Draper," says Biel, invoking the name of Hamm's character on Mad Men. "I'm fascinated by Don Draper. But I hate him."
"Like every other woman, do you want to sleep with him?" I ask.
"No!" she says emphatically. "No, I don't. Not at all."
Garner giggles and orders another glass of wine.
"Both of you have very famous men whom you really do sleep with," I venture. They are reluctant to talk about their famous significant others (Biel has been dating Justin Timberlake since 2007, and Garner married Affleck in 2005), but I have to ask. "Does that double your own fame? Does it become part of your girl talk?"
"Well, we don't need them to be famous ourselves," says Garner. "It's not like I go to Jessica, 'Oh, how's your famous boyfriend?'"
"But come on," I prod. "You have to be aware you have really cool partners."
"Yeah, from time to time we talk about swapping," Garner deadpans.
It's Biel's turn to giggle now, but then she turns serious. "It does help to have a partner who understands what fame is about and can share that with you. It's a hurdle you don't have to get over."
And how do the women cope with fame? "I think I have it all in perspective," says Garner. "If you're healthy and happy and you have a roof over your head, then that's what's important."
Her own roof, however, is pretty impressive, she and Aftleck recently purechased producerr Brian Gower's palatial Pacific Palisades estate for a $17 million. And yet such luxury doesn't seem to have gone to her head. Instead, it has made her realize, yes, how blessed her life is. "Sometimes I think my brain is going to melt away into a pool of butter. So, I have The New York Times Nicolas Kristof’s blog on my Google reader. Gail Collins is another New York Times Op-ed writer I love. I'm reading Kristof’s book Half the Sky right now. He wrote it with his wife. Sheryl WuDunn. It’s about the oppression of women and girls in the developing world and what we can do to help." "Oh my God"' says Biel. "I'm reading that book right now. too! it’s on my bedside table." "No way!" says Gamer. "No way!" "Yes! They're thinking of making a documentary-like movie based on the book and taking differents actresses to meets the girls Kristof and his wife write about. You and I have to get involved in this project. Jennifer. We have to."
Garner interest in social issues is not unrelated to her husband love of politics. If he evr runn for public office, would she support his choice? -Isn't that what the whole deal is about —supporting each other? I mean, I'm not that hungry for him to run for office, but if he did, I don't have any illusions about what the last few years must have been like for Michelle Obama." “Is he really thinking about running for office?" asks Biel. "No --but it’s almost impossible for it not to be talked about, because he in smart and articulate and politically active. So you can't help but feel it's lurking out there somewhere." says Garner. "But the kids have to grow up a bit." I tell her. "And you have to grow out of your ponytail stage and into your chignon one." Garner smiles and flicks her ponytail at me in flirty defiance. "People do tell me I'd be a good politician’s wife I’m such a Pollyanna and a Goody Two-shoes,' she says. Honey I never thought of you that way" I say "I've always thought of you as a kickass broad? "Well, thank you. I like that better." She admits, then goes back into mommy mode. "I just have to check my text message and see if the nanny and kids are all right." Seeing, Jennifer with her husband and children, does it make you long for that in your life also, Jessica'?" I ask. Garner deeply sighs at such a question. "Sorry.," she says to her friend. 'It always goes that way, doesn't it? As a single woman, you're always asked that, aren't you'?" Biel herself now sighs. "I'm just happy with my life right now' she finally says. "I don't know the answer to that. I mean.,I look at you, Jennifer, and I am a bit in awe. I feel like all my seconds are full all day long, and then I look at your life. and I wonder how you do it. How do you have it all?" Garner laughs at such a thought. “Well, I haven't showered today," she says. I just want to throw that into the conversation. So I'm not sure I do have it all."

Titanic: A New Life pt. 10
Trigger Warning: Domestic Abuse
There it was a ticket for the Titanic was in her hand. She was holding her way out. Then, as fast as the hope came, reality set in.
“Lara, I can’t possibly take this.” Claire insisted.
“Of course, you can Claire.” Lara replied.
“But this is too much. You obviously bought this for yourselves. Use it.” Claire was trying to hand the ticket back.
“Claire, it’s not going to be used by us. We were going to use it to move to New York so Jacque could set up his own practice. However, my grandmother has fallen on her death bed and I can’t leave her now. You know how close she and I are. So, Jacque has graciously agreed to postpone moving and setting up his practice. At least for the time being.” Lara explained.
“I thought Jaque had to take over the family business. How can he do that in New York?” Claire inquired. Hoping she could change the subject matter.
“Well, eventually he will. His parents are reluctant to have him leave England. He had to make a deal with them.” She explained as she rolled her eyes and shook her head. “He can go to New York,” she stated, “But he must do so with his own money. Then, when the day comes, he must return to England to take care of the family business. That is why the “second-class” ticket.” Lara explained.
“So, you were just going to up and move? Without telling me?” Claire knew this trick would work. She hated manipulating her friend, but the subject matter had to change.
“Claire. No, I wasn’t going to leave without telling you. How could you even think that?” Lara questioned. “These plans have been in motion for a while. I wasn’t going to tell you until things were finalized. When my grandmother fell deathly ill, we had to change plans. So, I didn’t tell you. Don’t think I have forgotten the whole point. The ticket is yours. Please say you’ll use it.” Lara pointed out.
Claire couldn’t contain all the emotions nor the questions she had no answer to anymore. “But how can I possibly do this?” She said as she quickly rose to her feet. “I have nothing packed, no money and nowhere to go when I get there.” She hadn’t noticed that she was shouting and pacing across the floor.
“Well, Claire, if you would sit back down and breathe, I would be happy to go over all of that.” Lara gestured to the seat beside her. Claire was too nervous to sit but she did stop pacing. “Now, Bradley is at work, yes?” Claire nodded. “Good. We can go over there pack a trunk and you can stay here for the night. Then, we wake up early and take you to the docks tomorrow morning.”
“But what happens when Bradley gets home and sees that I’m not there. This is the first place he’ll go to look for me.” Claire said through the tears and short painful breaths.
“Well, he simply won’t be able to find you darling.” Lara said with a slight grin. “Follow me.” Lara said, reaching out her hand and grabbing the hurricane lamp off the table with the other.
Claire grabbed her friend's hand and followed her up the stairs to where the guest bedrooms were. They passed all the black and white to sepia photographs leading to the paintings of the St. Du Bois line. Each hanging in a golden frame that set against the emerald walls. As they climbed the stairs Claire’s eyes dried and her breath grew calmer.
“Ah, this is it.” Lara said, stopping abruptly in front of a bookshelf. “Now where is it?” she asked waving her fingers across the many book titles while holding the light with her other hand. “Ah, here it is!” She proclaimed as she stopped her finger over Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein.” “Let’s see pull twice and.” As Lara pulled the book a second time a loud clicking sound sprang from behind the shelf making it ajar from the wall.
Claire couldn’t believe her eyes. She had heard of older homes having secret rooms and stairways but had never seen them in person before.
“Oh my god! A secret room?” Claire asked flabbergasted.
“Yes!” Lara replied. “These stairs lead up to the attic where there is a secret space. So secret, in fact, that you cannot tell that it’s there even from standing in the attic itself. I have always wanted to use it and now seems like the right time and purpose.” Lara pulled the shelf away from the wall to reveal the staircase behind it. “Shall we?” Lara asked.
Claire was in too much shock and wonder to even think about hesitating. They climbed the narrow stairwell up to the secret room. Lara took out the two different keys and unlocked both a lock above and below the doorknob.
Claire couldn’t believe her eyes. This room was spacious, well-lit with golden sconces and decorated to the nines. There was a bed big enough for the king himself, a sitting area and three bookshelves that were built into the walls. Just like the walls below, this room too, had the emerald green and gold aesthetic.
“Lara this is. I can’t. Wow.” Claire knew more words but couldn’t seem to express them at that moment.
“Claire, I know things right now seem scary and uncertain. But” Lara sat the lamp down to grab her friend’s hands, “my dear friend don’t think about the right now and start thinking about the future. What will happen if you stay?” She asked. But before Claire could answer, Lara answered, “Yes, there is a possibility that he could change. It is very small and most likely will not ever happen. What happens if he takes it too far next time? What if you don’t wake up?” she asked, trying not to let her friend know how upset she truly was. “I would be so lost if you left me here.” They were both starting to cry, again. “Claire, you are my best friend. Don’t be afraid to leave. Be afraid to stay.” Lara said looking into Claire’s watery eyes.
“Lara. I still don’t...” Claire started.
“Claire, please do this for me!” Lara broke as she lost all the sense of dignity that she had had up till this moment. “I can’t bear to watch you die! Not when there was something I could do to stop it!” Lara embraced Claire in a hug. “Please Claire! He’ll kill you and I can’t!”
“Lara, I’ll be okay.” Claire said softly as she wrapped her arms around her distraught friend as she started to cry harder than before.
“No!” Lara Screamed. “No, Claire you won’t!” Lara’s voice was booming, her words broken by sobs and erratic breaths. “Claire, please, please do this for me. Okay? This weekend was too close! You say you’ll be okay, but you won’t be! You’re too special to die! So, please? Please? You’re my best friend and I won’t be able to live with myself!”
Claire could not deny her friends anymore. “Okay, Okay,” she whispered her agreement. “But we still have things to iron out.”
“That’s fair.” Laura said through her sobs as she and Claire released each other. “What else is there to iron out?” She asked as they made their way to the small sitting area.
As they sat on the couch Claire began to think about everything all at once.
“Well, I have the ticket, the room and we can get my clothes. But what about the after? I will still have no money and no place to go once the ship gets to New York.” Claire stated.
“Claire, we have thought of that too.” Lara proclaimed proudly. “Jacque and I have already purchased the new manor in New York City. Until my grandmother passes, we will need someone to help keep the house organized.” She pointed out. “There will be a small handful of butlers and maids, so you won’t have to do much. And we would be glad to have you live with us for a time. We have also set you up with a bank account that has two-thousand American dollars in it.” Lara explained.
“Wow you two have seriously thought this through.” Claire exclaimed. “This is still a lot to take in. In just one single afternoon, I am just to change everything.”
“Yes, but what you are leaving behind is better left in the past.” Lara said.
“Well then. Do you have the time?” Claire asked.
Lara pulled on the golden chain that her watch was attached to. The time was a little past ten in the morning. Claire knew that if this was going to happen, they needed to go now.
They rode to Claire’s house in a nice horse-drawn carriage. Lily was brought along to help speed up the process of packing. As they rode Claire could not ignore the knots in her stomach and the thought racing through her head. What am I doing? This can’t be happening. What if I fail in New York? What if he’s right and I can’t make it without him? Who will love me now? Is it, really, as bad as it seems? Claire knew the answer to that one but was still afraid of the truth.
Suddenly, Claire felt Lara’s hand grab her own. As if her friend knew that she was a nervous wreck. Claire could breathe and relax a little with this simple gesture from her friend.
They reached Claire’s house and chills hit their bodies. Bradley was standing at the door.

Which families would like more members, and what FCs would be recommended?
Ooh! I love to make some FC recommendations!
mary queen of scots' mother & uncles would be a fabulous edition, and would be worthwhile allies to the young queen and the french royal family (amy bailey, bradley james, david dawson, david oakes, jaime olias, joe alwyn, laura carmichael)
bridget & henry parr's father, the marquess of northampton would surely be loved by our their writers! (damien lewis, nikolaj coster-waldau, viggo mortensen)
jane & richard boleyn's patriach & rest of the family! they are, without a doubt, the most powerful family beside the crown and can really be the most influential if you play your cards right! george boleyn (james frain, linus roache, toby stephens) to rival the influence of the percys, alongside the countess of essex & her husband (kylie bunbury, antonia thomas, ruby barker, aaron cobham, bay gbadamosi, corey mlychreest). mary carey (essie davis, claire forlani, alexandra moen) the sister to anne boleyn herself!
charles butler (the earl of ormind & our current lord of misrule)'s family would be a wonderful way to begin to flesh out a previously untouched family. his wife (claire foy, annabel scholey, jodie turner-smith) and the rest of his brothers & sisters (though bare in mind that the countess of ossory is from the howard family, and so would be a white fc) (habiba ummi mohammed, lashana lynch, ebonee noel, ali nuhu, gendry white, paapa essiedu, stephanie levi-john)
the dudleys (both of leicester & warwick) have close ties with the royal court as of december 1559, though we have a few we would love to see more to take advantage of the prestige that comes with the earl's close council with the princess elizabeth (hulya avsar, beren saat, berk cankat, burak ozvicit, tolga saritas)
and finally the percy dukes & duchesses of the family! we have been blessed to have the three percy siblings who have created their own fair share of drama. clearly, they are on track to stir the most ambition not seen since the ascension of the boleyn family! (joanne whalley, james frain, lucy lawless, richard pepper, ion gruffudd, rachel weisz, rosamund pike, kit harington, lea seydoux, michiel huisman, olly rix, rafaelle cohen)

books i read in 2024
Okay so last year I made a post where I was like, wow, I only read 12 books in 2022, but in 2023 I managed to read 30, isn't that impressive...
So, um, this year I hit 75 by the end of June.
Quite a bit of reading got done during a slow period at work in January. Then the autism/adhd found the challenges on Storygraph and got a bit hyperfixated - my two biggest months were May and June, with 15 and 20 books respectively.
Things slowed way down after October, since I've mostly been reading Agatha All Along fanfiction, which sadly doesn't count toward my total. I did manage to limp my way to a grand total of 125 by the end of December.

Review:
The Duke’s Christmas by Anna Bradley
Drop Dead Dukes #3
This is a solid light historical romance with an engaging female lead character with what other reviewers call a Pollyanna-like persona that I see as slightly more mature than the teen-Disney-character but still a fairytale type sprite who meets a gorgeous man when kicks in her door. He is icy and reserved, perhaps broken, and could benefit from a dose of Rose. Will he be able to leave his desire for revenge behind and instead find his way forward to…a perfectly happily ever after with the woman that he was hoping to wrest a home from and overcome his painful memories?
The good thing is that there is a happily ever after and though this is not the book I hoped to read, it is well written and could lead to future books in the series or it might be the last.
I did like Rose, never really totally warmed up to Max but had hopes he could change and the two of them could provide a happy future for their children in the future if they had any.
Did I like this book? Perhaps
Would I read more by this author? I think so
Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC ~ This is my honest review.

BLURB
Against the Bridgerton-era backdrop of Regency London, Anna Bradley’s witty and sexy trilogy sets fiercely alpha dukes against the duchesses who are determined to transform their delinquent husbands by any means necessary. A delight for fans of Mary Jo Putney, Sabrina Jeffries, Ella Quinn, Diana Quincy and Julia Quinn. For one determined duke, there’s nothing like coming home for Christmas—even if it means kicking open the door—and finding the key to his own long closed heart on the other side . . . Alarmed by the sound of an intruder, Rose St. Claire fetches her pistol. She’s shocked to discover that the trespasser is a handsome gentleman—one who states that the house, which Rose recently inherited from her late benefactor, was stolen from his father decades ago. He claims it is now his. And it is—but not entirely. As it turns out, Hammond Court has been left to them both—and neither can evict the other without forfeiting their right to the property . . . Wealthy and ruthless, Maxwell Burke, Duke of Grantham, has spent years regaining the many properties his father lost to bad wagers. Only Hammond Court remains. But Rose has no intention of leaving. In fact, as Christmas draws near, circumstances force Max to plan a holiday party, and Rose is all too happy to help. Max despises such merriment—until he sees it as an opportunity . . . Max will forgive the debt of another young duke’s family if the attractive gentleman woos Rose at the party, ultimately marries her—and returns her share of the estate to Max. It’s foolproof. Except that Rose’s spirited joy is seductive, recalling within Max long ago feelings of happiness—and awakening a deep attraction. Has Max cooked his own Christmas goose—or is there a chance love will prevail? . . .
