Remember when comic book heroes starred in fun video games? The Punisher on Sega Genesis was one of the best.
Released in 1994, this side-scrolling beat 'em up let you play as Frank Castle, the gritty vigilante from Marvel Comics. The gameplay was simple but satisfying - punch, kick, and shoot your way through waves of bad guys across gritty urban environments.
What set The Punisher apart was its combat system. Unlike most beat 'em ups of the era, you could pick up and use guns. This added a whole new dimension to the action. Suddenly you weren't just punching thugs, you were blasting them with shotguns and machine guns. It felt true to the character.
The graphics were impressive for the time too. The character sprites were large and detailed, capturing Frank Castle's rugged look. Levels ranged from grimy streets to fancy mansions, all rendered in that distinctive 16-bit style we loved in the 90s.
Of course, it wasn't perfect. The difficulty could be punishing (pun intended), and the gameplay did get repetitive after a while. But for comic fans and beat 'em up enthusiasts, it hit the spot.
