The Mosley Review: Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins

If there's one film franchise that got off on the insanely wrong foot, its the G.I. Joe film franchise. I grew up watching the original 80's series from time to time and I had the 1987 film on repeat. Yeah the show was pretty over the top with the alot of action, a tone of vehicles that turned into toys, but there was a grounded nature to it at times. The camp was always there, but the themes of fighting evil and being good to one another was intact. The first live action film took the franchise into Michael Bay territory with so much CGI nonsense and Retaliation tried so hard to scale it back to a more realistic and grounded nature. Both films are still bad with Retaliation at least being a step in the right direction. Now comes this film and it had a chance to act as a soft reboot by learning from past mistakes. Well it did learn from the past, but it made all new ones. The action was cool when I could see it once the camera would stop getting so close and shaking. This entry into the franchise not only lost its identity after about 30 minutes in, but it bogged itself down with a pointless plot that you've seen a hundred times before and a scene that changes the entire film into a samurai version of Anaconda. I had a sliver of hope for this franchise, but man was I let down 10 minutes in.

Henry Golding is always great and he does an excellent job as Snake Eyes. I dug his revenge story and excellent fighting skills, but something really went wrong here. If Snake Eyes is the hero, why does he do so many villainous things and cause so much pain. Sure he learns his lesson about vengeance as the story progresses, but I ended up feeling like he was the villain in his own story. Andrew Koji was awesome as Storm Shadow and I loved his determination. I felt he was one note for the majority of the film and had nothing, but killing on his mind. The chemistry between him and Snake Eyes was good, but not amazing. Haruka Abe was awesome as Akiko and I thought she was one of the strongest parts of the cast. There's a history behind her character that I thought was intriguing and she’s a great parallel to Snake that I wish was explored more. Iko Uwais as Hard Master was cool and I always love seeing the man fight and that's all he really does in this film. Peter Mensah was wise and fun to watch as Blind Master. I liked the way he carried himself and he was particularly dangerous in a number of scenes. Samara Weaving was good as the G.I. Joe Operative Scarlett, but I felt this was one of her more wooden performances. Úrsula Corberó was alright as the Cobra Operative Baroness, but she was just there to be the face of the evil organization behind everything. Takehiro Hira was good and shady as Kenta. Its so obvious of a plot with him that its not even that entertaining. Eri Ishida brought some gravitas as Sen and the feud between her and Kenta could've been more fleshed out for something more fun.

The score by Martin Todsharow was cool and felt traditionally Japanese while mixing in modern tones and beats. The action in the film is plentiful and sometimes its awesome, but it is ruined because of the terrible camera work. Intense close ups and shakey camera don't make a fight scene all the more brutal or exciting. It just makes it more headache inducing. I really thought we moved past the 2010's style of action. Honestly, this film was a real let down and it got worse as the film progressed. The biggest problem is the fact that your lead is supposed to be the hero, but he is ultimately the villain and you end up hating him for what he does. That is the prime example of a story that didn't really want to know what it wanted to be. Maybe one day we'll get a proper G.I. Joe movie that's grounded in reality. XXI century. Somalia. A place forgotten by the world and people. There are no schools, shops, money or even homes. There is only dry soil, soaked in sand, poverty and the blood of little girls who are subjected daily to abominable circumcisions. People live there like beggars, day by day. They are brought up among goats, cattle and camels, surrounded by wild nature. Among them is a little girl named Waris. Her name literally means "desert flower". This beautiful plant grows very rarely and extremely shortly, only when it rains. This metaphor describing the portrayal of her name is identified with an incredible and awe-inspiring story that really happened. The life of this small, helpless girl, like a flower, arouses astonishment among people, but also sadness. In the case of a plant, it is associated with passing away, with the dying of a flower, and in the case of Waris with a great tragedy, which people living in a civilized world can not understand. Waris, as a five-year-old child, was brutally circumcised by one of the local ministers. She was lucky to have survived this macabre ritual. Three years later she was raped, and at the age of thirteen, my father ordered her to marry her old, unknown Nomad. In a fit of desperation, little Waris decided to escape from the "house". And so begins her adventure, during which at least a few times fate was extremely gracious for her, saving her a certain death. After many dramatic events her wandering is over. And all thanks to the photographer - Terry Donaldson (Timothy Spall), thanks to which he gains fame as a model and becomes an advocate for the abolition of the practice of female circumcision. All these stages of her life have been presented in the film, but not in a chronological order, which forces the viewer to closely monitor what is happening on the screen. The strong point of the film is definitely the performance of the leading actress (Liya Kebede) and photos, especially in scenes shot in the desert, as well as music performed by Martin Todsharow. For the best scene I undoubtedly consider the circumcision of tiny Waris. The actress playing her is so convincing that you have the impression that the treatment is being watched live. Despite the fact that the film is quite faithful in giving back subsequent events, it certainly does not slow the viewer from reaching for a book with the same title, which more accurately depicts the life of a Somali girl. .

Notre commentaire : “Friend Request” est un film surnaturel d’horreur allemand datant de 2016, co-écrit et réalisé par Simon Verhoeven. Les acteurs principaux sont Alycia Debnam-Carey, qu’on a pu voir dans “Into the Storm” (2014), William Moseley, qu’on a pu voir dans “The Veil” (2016), Connor Paolo, qu’on a pu voir dans “Stake Land” (2010) et Brit Morgan, qu’on a pu voir dans “Free Ride” (2013).
À l’origine, ce film était intitulé Unknown Error, cependant, il a été renommé ultérieurement en Friend Request pour la distribution internationale, afin d’éviter toute confusion avec le film “Unfriended” paru en 2014. Cependant en Allemagne, le film est intitulé Unfriend, puisque le film “Unfriended“ avait été diffusé sous le nom de Unknown User dans ce pays.
Le film a été tourné à Cape Town, en Afrique du Sud. Bien que le film ait été produit par le réalisateur allemand Simon Verhoeven et des sociétés de production allemandes, le casting est largement anglophone du fait de la volonté que le film soit tourné en anglais. Le tournage s’est achevé en mars 2014.
En dehors du fait qu’il y ait un imbroglio avec le titre dans sa version d’origine (Allemagne) et la distribution internationale pour éviter la confusion avec “Unfriended” (2014), l’histoire qui nous est proposée par “Friend Request” y ressemble fortement. La différence significative résidant dans le fait que “Unfriended” était proposé en found footage et proposait une vue essentiellement basée sur des images d’un ordinateur portable et des discussions à partir d’un logiciel du type Skype. 
Dans ces deux métrages, on nous rappelle qu’internet peut être un endroit particulièrement sombre. Certaines personnes n’hésitant pas à partager une multitude de choses via les réseaux sociaux, là où d’autres se sentent plus à l’aise pour communiquer derrière un écran d’ordinateur plutôt qu’en face-à-face avec les personnes. L’utilisation de cette obscurité comme sujet avait donc déjà été utilisée, mais c’est encore loin d’être maîtrisé.
Le préambule de “Friend Request” est plutôt sympathique et le segment “2 semaines plus tôt” est brillamment conçu et met en place ce qui aurait dû être un excellent film. Malheureusement, par la suite, les choses s’effondrent rapidement. Les personnages commencent à faire et à dire des choses qui n’ont aucun sens, et le développement des dangers de l’utilisation abusive des réseaux sociaux passe par la fenêtre. 
Pour le côté horrifique du film, il repose essentiellement sur des jump-scares plutôt bien orchestrés, ou tout du moins qui ont parfaitement fonctionné sur nous, puisque nous avons sursauté à plusieurs reprises… Le concept reste archi-classique avec des apparitions soudaines de tronches pas possibles dont le maquillage est pleinement efficace. Cependant, il faut avouer que les scènes où, certains des protagonistes passent de vie à trépas, sont d’une grande déception en termes de suspense.
Le casting, bien que nous étant complètement inconnu, offre des prestations correctes. La photographie est plaisante, même si Simon Verhoeven, le réalisateur, utilise un peu trop facilement l’obscurité pour construire ses jump-scares, ce qui les rend finalement prévisibles. La bande originale est plaisante. On relèvera que bien que toute l’histoire tourne autour de Facebook, ce n’est pas explicitement mentionné.   
“Friend Request” va faire l’objet d’une édition en DVD ainsi qu’en Blu-ray, à paraître le 5 avril 2017 chez Warner Home Vidéo France. Pour de plus amples renseignements, n’hésitez pas à consulter la fiche du film sur le site DVD.Fr.
En conclusion, “Friend Request” est un film d’horreur disposant d’une histoire qui se rapproche fortement de celle proposée par “Unfriended” (2014) avec une intrigue relativement basique. Le rythme est assez cohérent et la distribution nous livre d’honorables prestations. Les jump-scares sont usuels mais reste efficaces, permettant à ce métrage d’être un film d’horreur supérieur à la moyenne, mais malencontreusement décevant par le gaspillage de potentiel.

Max (Til Schweiger), ehemaliger KSK Soldat, muss Nina (Luna Schweiger),Vollwaisin und einzige Zeugin eines furchtbaren Verbrechens, besch?tzen. Beide sind auf der Flucht vor einem ?berm?chtigen Gegner (Heiner Lauterbach), der nur ein Ziel hat: Nina zu t?ten. Auf der Flucht n?hern sich Max, der ein Einzelg?nger ist und Nina, die in ihrem kurzen Leben noch nie einem Erwachsenen vertraut hat, an. Aus anf?nglicher Distanz wird Freundschaft. Aus Unsicherheit wird Vertrauen. Max besch?tzt Nina und Nina besch?tzt Max. In einer schier auswegslosen Situation finden die beiden Zuflucht, zuerst bei Max besten Kameraden aus Kriegszeiten Rudi (Moritz Bleibtreu) und schliesslich bei Max gro?er Liebe Sara (Karoline Schuch). Max Ex-Freundin, die mittlerweile als Staatsanw?ltin arbeitet, setzt mit den beiden die Flucht fort. Es kommt zu einem fulminanten Showdown, bei dem wir nicht wissen, ob unsere Protagonisten ?berleben werden.
