Hailing from Chicago’s renowned Wax Trax! Records stable of recording artists, MY LIFE WITH THE THRILL KILL KULT have been conjuring up sonic tales of sex, blasphemy and kitschy horror since 1987. Along with label mates such as Front 242, KMFDM and Ministry, TKK (as often abbreviated), helped develop the industrial music genre, but they themselves continued to evolve, creating one of the most diverse repertoires in modern day music. Their sound can be described as electronic rock, heavily influenced by both disco and funk. One of their most distinctive characteristics is the use of spoken-word samples lifted from B-movies laced throughout their songs. Since debuting, they have released 13 studio albums, and their music has been featured in a variety of films, television/cable shows and soundtracks, all the while making a reputation for themselves as one of the most notorious and controversial cult bands of their generation.
Artist Franke Nardiello and musician Marston Daley, two Chicago neighbors who enjoyed late night burritos while watching foreign horror movies on VHS rented from the corner store, began conspiring to make a trashy B movie (in the style of Russ Meyer and John Waters) to be called “My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult”. While the film itself never came to fruition, they also wrote some music to be the accompanying soundtrack. Both worked at Wax Trax! Records in Chicago, and when the label heard the tracks, they were intrigued and eager to release it.
The duo took the title of the film as the name for their band, and decided to focus on the musical group full time. Taking the stage names Groovie Mann (Nardiello) and Buzz McCoy (Daley), they worked on creating an occult-biker meets disco-rock influence look for the project, which included a bevy of voluptuous back-up singers and dancers known as the BOMB GANG GIRLZ. The New York Times wrote, “Sex, blasphemy, big beats and go-go dancing; they’re all in a day’s work for My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult ”. This attracted the attention of indie fans and the ire of religious groups in practically equal measure. They released their first album I See Good Spirits And I See Bad Spirits in 1988 followed up by the hard-hitting dance floor classics “Kooler Than Jesus” and “A Girl Doesn’t Get Killed By A Make-Believe Lover Cuz It’s Hot,” which featured no-wave chanteuse Lydia Lunch on vocals. By the time they released their second album, Confessions Of A Knife (1990), they were far and away one of the biggest selling acts on the label.
In 1991, the band embarked on the decadent “Sexplosion! Tour”, titled after their third album. Alternative Press reviewed the show as “Sin-sational!”. The tour was a success and the record sold so well that they signed a deal with Interscope Records shortly afterwards, and the single “Sex On Wheelz” became a sizeable radio hit.
Hollywood also embraced the group, recognizing the unique cinematic aspect of their sound. The band’s music has appeared in a slew of films and tv/cable shows including, director Ralph Bakshi’s “Cool World”, Paul Verhoven’s saucy “Showgirls”, MTV’s “Beavis And Butthead“, and the cult film classic “The Crow”, in which the ensemble make a cameo appearance performing their song “After The Flesh”. More recently the KULT was written into the story line of the 2014 film “Sexy Evil Genius” starring Seth Green.
THRILL KILL KULT continue to release new material via their own SleazeBox Records label (sleazebox.com) and tour extensively with a rotating cast of musicians and dubious characters, however the core of the project has always been Nardiello and Daley, both on record and in the live act. Their performances sizzle with sleaze and infectious grooves, as Melody Maker once described, “A red hot cabaret from Hell”.
They begin their 4th decade this year with the release of a new album, In The House Of Strange Affairs on February 14th, and a North American tour commencing May 5th in Las Vegas. The current line-up is Groovie Mann (vocals), Buzz McCoy (keys), Mimi Star (bass), Justin Thyme (drums), Arena Rock (Bomb Gang Girl).

My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult - Blue Buddha (1993) *NEW VIDEO from MUNROW'S RETRO on VIMEO on Vimeo.
Another strange trip back to the early 90's when I was a subscriber to a monthly VHS alternative rock series (yes, those hoary old days of magnetic tape in a video cassette and desktop publishing). Hard to believe this song will be 28 years old this autumn.
In late 1993, this song stuck out from the crowd so to speak, hypnotic, incessant, and wholly seductive (and in some ways reminiscent of Dr. John's early Night Tripper period). The original video was very weird, a bit macabre and occult-like, but I haven't watched it in a long time and didn't refresh my memory by viewing it while making this video as I wanted to be as original as possible. Like "Blue Buddha" does musically through spoken word-samples, I also engage in "sampling" bits of retro, although visually, to complement them. Thus, it is a virtual potpourri of retro from almost every genre that would fit the wild unpredictability and inherent darkness of this track. But who is the young dancer whose moves lead us on earlier in the video? LOL. Yeah, even she is reto now, and this song came out less than five years before her first big hit.
From Wikipedia: "My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult (often shortened to Thrill Kill Kult or TKK) is an American electronic industrial rock band originally based in Chicago, Illinois and founded by Groovie Mann (born Frankie Nardiello) and Buzz McCoy (born Marston Daley). They became known in the 1980s as pioneers of the industrial music genre – although by the early 1990s they had changed to a more disco-oriented sound – and as a frequent target of censorship groups, including the PMRC, which objected to the band's humorous and satirical references to Satan, Jesus and sex in their song lyrics and stage shows. During the early 1990s, Thrill Kill Kult had several hits on the U.S. dance club and alternative charts. They also contributed songs to several movie soundtracks and appeared in the 1994 film The Crow."
Like Screaming Trees' song "Butterfly" (which I made a video of at YouTube in 2019, and it is here as well), I first came into contact with My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult, not by radio airplay or MTV oddly enough, but through a monthly VHS series I subscribed to during the early 1990's called Rock Video Monthly. Each tape profiled music videos by largely alternative rock bands and artists like Concrete Blonde, Dinosaur Jr., Counting Crows, Screaming Trees, Spin Doctors, and Eve's Plum. On average there were ten artists on each VHS tape. I still own a small library of the tapes and they are in excellent condition.
"Blue Buddha" was released on the 1993 album 13 Above the Night.

Music Review: My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult Drop ‘The Chains of Fame’
My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult will drop a new album, In The House Of Strange Affairs, February 14. As a precursor, the band just released “The Chains of Fame.”
Formed in 1987, My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult (TKK) is the brainchild of Franke Nardiello and Marston Daley, who wanted to produce a trashy B-movie. Naturally, they would title it “My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult.” They even composed a soundtrack for the movie. Sadly, the movie never was made. But Wax Trax! Records liked the soundtrack enough to release it.
Borrowing the unmade movie’s title as the name of their band, the duo went with an occult-biker meets disco-rock vibe, complete with a group of sultry singers and dancers called the Bomb Gang Girlz. Fans loved it, while religious types despised it. TKK dropped their debut album, I See Good Spirits And I See Bad Spirits, in 1988, and followed with two singles, “Kooler Than Jesus” and "A Girl Doesn’t Get Killed By A Make-Believe Lover Cuz It’s Hot," featuring the glorious queen of no-wave music, Lydia Lunch.
TKK’s third album, Sexplosion, dropped in 1991 to massive success, which led to a contract with Interscope Records. Hollywood lapped them up, including their music in movies like Cool World, Showgirls, The Crow, and MTV’s Beavis And Butthead.
Made up of Groovie Mann, aka Franke Nardiello (vocals), Buzz McCoy, aka Marston Daley (keys), Mimi Star (bass), Justin Thyme (drums), and Arena Rock (Bomb Gang Girl), TKK hits the road on a national tour in May 2019.
“The Chains of Fame” opens on a thumping groove rife with tight industrial energy, as slick, yammering vocals flow overhead. Shimmering synths colors give the harmonics a swelling, tumescence both potent and infectious. A gleaming, psychedelic-flavored solo section deploys stylish spoken-word samples, adding mock-synthetic tension.
TKK still has it going on, producing infectious industrial dance music with powerful rhythms and wicked vocal tones.

 “MY WONDER WOMEN”

MY LIFE WITH THE THRILL KILL KULT Still Going Sexy with 'In the House of Strange Affairs'
Industrial sexy is a rare breed in today’s music world, but legendary electro-rockers are back, once again, to ensure that it’s never forgotten. Their newest offering, In the House of Strange Affairs, a seductive if downtempo continuation of their electronic dance beats paired with iconic front-man Groovie Mann’s patented erotic growling and obscure horror samplings, is proof that if it isn’t broke, don’t fix it. If you love Hit and Run Holiday or 13 Above the Night, and “Sex on Wheels” and “Blue Buddha” in particular, then In the House of Strange Affairs should be on your top ten for 2019.
Track List: 1. Gold to Grey 2. Forbidden Saints 3. Treat Street 4. The Chains of Fame 5. Strange Affairs 6. It’s Me Holly 7. Studio 21 8. Year of the Klown 9. Royal Skull 10. Hanging Hearts 11. Under a Crown 12. Am I Dead
