Thanks for archiving and sharing all these cool pics. I think you mostly scan from magazines and such, so i was curious what is your favourite magazine for taking scans of?

i actually scan more books these days, but it used to be primarily magazines… i’d prob say marquis had the best imagery. skin two + secret (and similar publications, like zeitgeist) get honorable mentions. there was definitely a Golden Age for fetish mags, as with fashion ones, and it’s long gone.

speaking of which, digging through issues to find anything cool in a fashion mag is tedious + usually unrewarding; the same tends to go for playboy + penthouse. hustler is obviously “problematic” but at least it was interesting and not painfully self-serious.

I had a dumb idea to run a poll about which Wildbow character would make the "best" star for a Bachelor/ette-style reality show. But given how I am nowhere near the demographic for that kind of show, I figured I should ask for suggestions first. And that is what I am doing now: Asking for suggestions.

Some picks that seem amusing to me:

Laird Behaim: Manipulative, cruel, and power-hungry. In other words, a normal cop. But he also knows magic.

Robert "Beast of Burden" Burton: He's a bit-part character notable for being a brutish Brute and for getting murdered.

Amelia Dallon: She was so fucked-up over her first crush turning her down that she went to jail for it, and then she got worse.

Duncan Foster: Pre-character-development, he's uncharismatic, bland, and a bit oblivious...kind of like a harem anime protagonist, except without luck that keeps putting him in ecchi situations and then clobbered. And he's less oblivious than they are.

Bianca, aka Goddess: She's a ridiculously powerful parahuman who appointed herself god-queen of an entire planet; she surely has nothing better to do than star in a reality TV show. Also, she has a brainwashing power that works through video.

Professor Ibbot: He built a tween-girl-shaped cephalopod assassin in part to be a living sex toy. Worse, everyone knew that was part of why he designed Project Galatea the way he did. He's more fucked-up than Amy, and barely better at hiding it.

Maggie Holt: I will not clarify whether I'm talking about Mags or the other one, that's part of the absurdist appeal. (Remember that reality show about a guy who the producers pretended was Prince Harry?)

Lord Infante: Self-explanatory, I feel.

Natalie Matteson: The only normal person on this list. One of the few normal people associated with parahumanity.

Reverend Mauer: Reasonably handsome, aside from the mushroom arm. Active political agitator against the Crown. Probably took a vow of celibacy.

Khan "Conquest" Quest: Just for the jokes about "Who will conquer Conquest's heart?"

Gregor T. Snail: The top Worm Tumblr Sexyman (according to brocktonbay's poll). His legal middle name is "The".

John Stiles: A personification of wartime trauma and violence who's also a single dad? Very much not Bachelor material. (I assume.)

Tattletale: Sure, put the aroace queen of the Megalopolis at the center of your romantic reality TV show. An aroace queen known for manipulating people into unanticipated self-destructive spirals. What could go wrong?

Blake and/or Rose Thorburn: Feels self-explanatory. Can't decide if it would be funnier to make them a package deal, or to make one the Bachelor(ette) and the other one of the contestants.

Toadswallow: I need to look up a synonym for self-explanatory. Um...unambiguous? That doesn't feel like it means the same thing. Self-evident sounds too similar. Let's go with "straightforward". (He's in a committed relationship, but Bubbleyum's a goblin; she'd probably open it up if she thought it would be funny.)

Mark "Marquis" Wies: The top Worm Tumblr Sexyman (according to parahumans-online's poll). No known legal name. It's possible he inherited an actual French aristocratic ti—wait, they did the guillotine thing. Um...it's possible he inherited an actual French-Canadian aristocratic title.

Dr. Jessica Yamada: The show would constantly get sidetracked by Yamada's attempts to untangle the contestants' issues, much to the dismay of the producers.

Who else should be considered?

(For the sake of argument, let's stick to characters who were adults in a significant portion of their source texts. The idea of a romance reality show featuring magical middle schoolers and/or underaged science experiments does sound funny, but I feel like most of that comes from the "underaged Bachelor/ette" part than the actual characters.)

INTEREST CHECK & ACTIVITY CHANGES!

Don't worry, we haven't forgotten activity checks! Lindsey and I have been working behind the scenes at ironing out some changes to how we do activity checks, to give you guys a little more leniency while allowing us to stay on top of things with less stress / guilt.

Starting on Monday, May 8th, our activity requirements will be changing. Any account inactive for two weeks will be automatically unfollowed. Accounts that are inactive for one week, display inconsistent activity and/or are not replying to open starters will be warned. Checks will be done twice a month -- once at the beginning/end, and once in the middle. That should give people plenty of time in between and also a little more structure. I will have a more detailed post on this on Monday, as well as adjusting our rules then, so if you have any questions, please ask!

Another thing that we are introducing at this point in time is our 'extended reserve for future use' section, in which players can now reserve one face that they plan on developing a character around. Only one, however! We don't want to encourage face hogging, and if a significant amount of time passes, we will reach out to check and see if you're still moving forward with said character. We know (from our own current experiences!) that it can sometimes take much, much longer than one week to properly research and develop a character, and want to extend that courtesy to our writers.

So! To get everyone on the same page and with a fresh, clean start, we are giving everyone this weekend to contact us and interact with this post. If you are good to go, just like it, we'll cross you off the list and your roles are yours. If you need to drop or swap, or pause anyone, or make any changes, let us know! Happy to help.

Aside: Web of Language.

Lovecraft's entry into writing fiction coincided with the rise of the cheap pulps. These magazines presented exciting & sensual adventure stories in various, sometimes weird, genres.

It was these mags which soon connected HPL with a # of admiring fans & with clients for his revision services.

Sadly, the editors of these magazines payed their writers rather poorly.

To make matters worse, Lovecraft wrote in long, serpentine sentences, he loved dry exposition & used an arcane vocabulary mixed in with old British spellings.

HPL relied on 1st person narration a bit too much. He'd use implausible background details to fill in for the character's dialogue.

And, Lovecraft failed to show, rather than tell...

In fact, his fictional scribblings are more like the Marquis de Sade works than Poe's! Both, HPL & de Sade, used dense atmospheric styles, depicting worlds of misanthropic violence.

Freedom, for both writers, was a kind of madness. But, for Lovecraft, it also meant the end of human folly.

In other words, his works were a really tough 'sell.'

Now, with all of his family's mental & emotional problems, it's only natural for HPL to be afraid of being affected. So, his main characters must also stumble along the brink of madness!

Lovecraft's preferred 'hero' was a cold, sexless & solitary know it all - who, it turns out, didn't know well enough to not get 'involved' with whatever's going on! They rarely have any internal or external lives.

Characters exist to investigate mysteries best left alone. Curiosity leads them into journeys of discovery & horror!

Traveling thru dark continents & darker alley ways, they suffer from weird dreams & skirt bloody rituals. All the while, going thru reams of books & related paperwork, maps, etc...

Then, they go & learn way too much, straining their once sane minds. A mental shock delivered by some devastating & overpowering 'truth'...

(Sanity Fail!)

Then, things get worse!! The cosmic - or personal - danger rarely fails to do the 'hero' in...

In the end, they're just another victim, quickly swallowed by the night - if they're lucky enough to get to commit suicide!!

They're just targets for whatever hideous unknown - or body horror - that HPL has concocted.

And yet, we still want more! We don't want the story to end...

That's why most people alive today, believe that the Necronomicon is a real book!

What can one say against such utter madness?!!

Bahagi ito ng kanilang outreach program na pinamagatang “Hawak Kamay” at umikot sa temang “Dominikanong sama-samang tumutulong para sa pag-asenso ng kapwa Pulileño.”

Layunin ng programa na malinang ang pakikiramay ng mga Dominikano sa kapwa, maghatid saya at tulong sa mga nangangailangan ngayong Kuwaresma, at ipalaganap ang mga korporal na gawa ng awa sa pamamagitan ng pagpapakain sa mga nagugutom, pagpapainom sa mga nauuhaw, at pagdadamit sa mga walang kasuotan.

Pinangunahan nina Bb. Arriane Garcera at G. Paul Marquis Garcia ang palatuntunan para sa nasabing outreach activity. Si Bb. Maria Rosario De Leon naman ang nanguna sa panalangin na sinundan ng mga pagsayaw ng mga estudyante, guro, at mga bata.

Carla Veronica Villaseñor at Bb. Daenielle Sotamiento. Binigyan naman ang mga bata ng mga rosaryo at papel na ginuhitan nila ng kanilang mga hilling at sinulatan ng kanilang liham para kay Hesus.

Nagkaroon din ng mga palaro tulad ng ‘stop dance’ at ‘the boat is sinking’ kung saan nagpamigay ng iba’t ibang premyo ang mga estudyante sa mga manlalaro. Pagkatapos, naganap ang pagbibigay ng mga pagkain, inumin, damit at mga laruan sa mga bata. Habang naghihintay makatanggap ng pagkain, ilang bata ang nagpasalamat sa kanilang mga ate at kuya sa SDA.

Ipinaabot ni G. Gerald Simbogan, guro at campus minister, ang kanyang mensahe ukol sa naging programa.

25. What is a weird, hyper-specific detail you know about one of your characters that is completely irrelevant to the story?

i honestly don't have many of these, most of my thoughts end up getting worked into a story at one point or another lol. i was about to put one about mag, but then i realized it’s gonna be mentioned in the next chapter of FOM, sooo..... *zips lips*

27. Who is the most stressful character you’ve ever written? Why?

"stressful" is an interesting word.... there aren't many characters i consider stressful to write. even a character as shitty as mag, i kinda enjoy writing. and if a character stresses me out, i probably won't write about them a lot. some of the ones i find more Difficult to write, though, are probably.... mick (bc he's funny and i'm not funny) and any OC i write into a fic (bc it's entirely on me to make them likeable/memorable to the readers, who have no backlog of feelings towards them for me to fall back on)

i'll do you one better: i'll give you a passage that doesn't exist anymore, from the first draft of separate but syncopated, and then explain how/why it changed lol. this is how nureyev and his first love marquis originally met, with some bits cut for brevity:

When Nureyev runs into a band of rebels talking animatedly around a fire in the slums after a few weeks of petty thefts, he tries to turn up his nose at them. Don’t they realize it’s pointless? Whatever they’re fighting for, they won’t obtain it. Or if they do, they’ll treat the new downtrodden just as badly as they once were treated as soon as they have power.

[...] As it turns out, one of them has stood up and positioned himself on top of a crate. He has auburn hair and sparkling eyes, and everyone has stopped to look at him, as though mesmerized in his wake. They know this man, trust him--perhaps he’s their boss. He doesn’t look much older than Nureyev, but he’s got the air of a leader.

“From the beginning of time, there’ve been have and have-nots,” the man says, and his voice is rich and loud. “There have always been people like us. Always been hungry, always been downtrodden. We have nothing, and yet they still take from us. Take and take and take. For what? And why? Why do they deserve it? Why should we starve while they eat?”

All the rebels cheer, throwing up their hands.

“Tell me!” the man yells. “Why should we starve while they eat?”

The question becomes a chant, ringing through the night air. The words are simple, nothing revolutionary. Yet the sparkle in the man’s eyes has become a flame, and there’s spit flying from his mouth as he shouts, silhouetted by the planet’s moons. His passion and rage are so familiar. Nureyev remembers a time only a few years ago when he’d been filled with that same rage, before his life once more became nothing more than a bid for survival.

He thinks he’s hidden in the shadows, outside the reach of the fire’s light, but then the rebel leader’s eyes fix on him and he stiffens.

“Who do we have here?” the man says, stepping down from the crate and strolling lazily past his underlings, who have fallen into a tense silence. He stops right in front of him. He’s at least a few inches shorter than Nureyev, but somehow Nureyev still feels like he’s being loomed over. “A voyeur?”

The man laughs. “I’m Marquis Prouvaire,” he says. “Marq, to some.”

“Herzog. Ken Herzog.” Nureyev comes up with it on the spot, and it’s no Marquis Prouvaire, but it’ll have to do.

Marquis smiles. “Welcome to the rebellion, Ken.”

so yeah, if you’re familiar with SBS this should look VERY different lol. their entire way of meeting is way more simple and boring, without the drama of marquis saving nureyev from falling into the gases, and his revolutionary ranting is more general instead of specifically being about the discrepancy between the under and over cities. that’s because in the first draft of SBS, daksha was a completely normal planet. it wasn’t a gas giant, the under and over cities didn’t exist, and so neither did the anti-grav devices. as soon as i did that world-building work, i was able to make this section Way more unique and interesting.

the lines marquis says are actually taken, near-verbatim, from lines mag says in the original drafts of angel of brahma. that was an intentional parallel, obviously, if maybe a little weirdly freudian in retrospect lol.

speaking of, you’ll notice marquis introduces himself as marq. he was originally going to be primarily called marq (because that sounds more normal and makes the royalty vibe of his name more subtle), but then i realized it was too close to mag and the parallels between him and mag were strong enough already :’D 

i always knew he’d be a revolutionary leader, though! that bit was important to me, given nureyev’s attraction to moral outrage and past as a revolutionary, himself.

Alternate season 4 where Martin and Jon begin emailing after Jon’s harassment complaint. Explores Martin’s descent into the Lonely versus the very real danger of the Extinction. Beautifully written, totally heartbreaking, includes a nice bit of hurt/comfort. Highly recommend.

I don’t think it’s explicitly a sequel to the next one on this list, but I’d recommend reading that one first and then reading this one. It’s just so incredible. I love it with all my heart.

SHARONE Releases Official Music Video for "Diamond"

Denver based, Dark Rock artist SHARONE has released the official music video for the fourth and final single, “Diamond,” off of her upcoming LP, Morbid Illusion, due out May 28, 2021 via Devil Inside Records. Directed by Kyle Lamar, and SHARONE herself, “Diamond” features Johnny Romero on drums, Zach Barrera on bass, and Spencer Simpson and Travis Owen on guitar.

Merrock's a town known for giving back… which is why we're spending an entire week doing just that! We have some suggestions for places that you can spend time volunteering, but you're not completely limited to these if you have some ideas of things around town that you would like to do yourself!

cityview park -- spend some time cleaning around the historic park in downtown Merrock.

hospital center -- dedicate your time to doing whatever it is that the staff might need your help with.

merrock railway -- do some clean up along our very own rail system in town, keeping it sparkly and new. ish.

aquatic conservatory -- help the conservatory staff out with feeding and looking after the many wonderful sea creatures.

the lighthouse -- spend some time volunteering to help clean up the area surrounding the lighthouse.

the marina -- help boat owners with tours and cleaning up around the docks.

the swimming beach -- every beach is always in need of a little bit of cleaning!

aster playground -- that playground equipment might need some work, get repairs done, clean up the flower beds!

community center -- there are always a million things to do at the center to help out.

memorial library -- help our team of librarians with whatever they need.

new haven daycare -- visit the youngest kids and volunteer to help with their needs!

ruff around park -- do a little tidying and cleaning up and play with puppies!

school district -- help out with various tasks that need done around the elementary, middle or high school.

animal sanctuary -- help our workers with the animals that need them the most.

harmony ranch -- spend time embracing your inner cowboy… or cleaning out some stalls!

lake malory -- keeping our lake clean and pristine is a big goal for this year… go ahead and help out!

paradise gardens -- help take care of the many, many plants in our own botanical garden, and learn something along the way.

state park -- there's always something to do around the state park to help out!

Auburn went live today and we learned some things.

We’re less than a week into fall camp, and the Auburn Tigers have scrimmaged in upon themselves. Gus Malzahn led an 84-play practice today and we discovered that in the game of football, practicing against yourself will often yield mixed results.

From what we can glean, the defense led the day. It’s not surprising when you consider what they’re capable of doing and how much room the offense had to go to get into game shape after last season, but when you hear some of the positives coming out of the first few practices it does get a little disheartening that the offense struggled.

To be sure, practicing in shells and helmets has a much different feel (and much less pressure) than running an actual scrimmage. That said, we remember what Joey Gatewood and Bo Nix did in the spring, and we’ve heard the glowing reviews over the first week of camp. Unfortunately for them, they’ve got to learn against one of the best defenses in the country.

Today, you can say that the defense took the young kids to freshman orientation. Here are some of the notes from Gus Malzahn afterward.

Auburn HC Gus Malzahn said the first-team defense "dominated" the scrimmage. He says it forced three turnovers — two interceptions, including a pick-six.

Eli Stove and Will Hastings were limited in the scrimmage, "by design." Auburn knows what it has in them, so used the scrimmage to see what it has depth-wise. Malzahn mentioned Zach Farrar, Marquis McClain and Shedrick Jackson.

Auburn HC Gus Malzahn said the two quarterbacks will need another scrimmage before he can make a decision on a starter. The Tigers are scheduled to return to JHS next Wednesday.

If you had to put money on it, there’s little doubt that the defense would’ve been the favorite to control the first scrimmage. They’ve got continuity, and they’ve got experience, not to mention some of the best talent in the land. When the Auburn offense has to go against Derrick Brown, Marlon Davidson, Nick Coe, the seasoned secondary, and a linebacker group that’s as talented as can be, it’s not going to be easy.

For the offense, they didn’t have some of their biggest playmakers. That’ll never help. Missing D.J. Williams (who’s expected to be quite the participant this season), and letting guys like Will Hastings, Eli Stove, Anthony Schwartz (broken hand), and Seth Williams have little to no work in this scrimmage won’t do the offense any good when they compete against the first team on the other side. Scrimmages often work that way, though, and coaches can’t exclusively play the first string in practices just to confirm what the veterans and starters can do. They got valuable tape on some of the new faces around the team, and Auburn’s going to need as much help as they can get since the depth in many spots isn’t fantastic.

As far as the biggest issue of fall camp — the quarterback race between Joey Gatewood and Bo Nix — it sounds like we’ll have to wait at least another week. Neither player separated themselves from the other today, and with the lack of key offensive starters, it’s not super hard to see why. Word is that the offensive line had trouble getting a push (not surprising), but that’s difficult to tell whether it’s because they’re still at the 2018 level or because the defensive front is that good.

Auburn returns to Jordan-Hare Stadium next Wednesday for more scrimmage work, and Gus Malzahn hopes to be able to have a better idea on the starting quarterback then. After all, we’re only going to be two-plus weeks away from kickoff at that point.

However, there are some (unnamed members of the College and Mag group chat) who think that maybe... just maybe Gus already has it figured out. Maybe this whole waiting to name a starter is a smokescreen. Maybe he’s got a guy ready to name right now (Cord Sandberg, duh). If you listen to this past week’s episode of Orange and True, you’ll hear Ryan Sterritt pick Auburn to go 11-1 this season. That won’t be possible if we don’t have a quarterback ready to go for week one.

Why would we wait to make that call, though? Well. If you thought that the loser would start to explore the transfer market, then you might wait. You also want the biggest element of surprise to not be a redesigned Auburn logo that looks a little too stretched.

Those reasons are a little too tinfoil hat for me, however. It’s perfectly likely that our defense is awesome and the offense struggled while missing a few of the key pieces. When our quarterbacks don’t have their favorite receivers, and the offensive linemen are going up against the best defensive line in the country for real, one unit is better than the other. As a noted optimist who thought that even the 2012 offense had serious weaponry, I have a much more positive feeling about this year. Whichever quarterback starts will be fine, and the task ahead of them is a defense that’s not nearly as good as the one they get to see every day.

In the end, scrimmages don’t tell you much at all, because every positive has a negative, except one.
