“The modern gentleman is, above all, a self-made man” 🌹
It’s my take on Marlowe Lune’s DTIYS!
Tumblr media
Yes I have a million other things to work on at the moment, but when I saw Marlowe’s “Modern Gentlemen” illustration and the wonderful concept behind it I couldn’t help myself. I had to take a stab at it. So I went at it from my own perspective, deriving inspiration from some of my favourite things from the beginning of the XX century (1920s-30s movie posters, ballet dancer Vaslav Nijinsky, German expressionist cinema, Leyendecker’s illustrations and William Morris’ botanical decorations among them) to create a poster/magazine cover for a supposed upcoming ballet, featuring its transmasc lead dancer as the focus of the piece.
This was challenging to put together but I’m overall very pleased with the results, and I can’t wait to hear what you all think about it!
Also, here’s a secret, alternate version with a light background and the original artwork by Marlowe:

hi uh, i really enjoy your art and your sewing, I'm even subbed over on youtube, but I jsut wanna say thanks for being you. It's really cool to learn you're trans, and it's revitalizing my desire to get back into historic sewing. I didn't know if or how big the trans communityw as in the recreation sewing, but knowing we're out there in this community too is really assuring. I'm super excited to start working on patterns and styles I haven't been able to do before. Thank you for all you do!
Hello, thank you!! There are quite a lot of trans people who are into historical sewing! I can't think of very many here on tumblr - there's @rowzien who does lovely early 19th century stuff, and I'm sure plenty of trans costuming people will say "same hat!" in the comments of this post.
There are a lot more that I know of on instagram, so I'll just list a bunch off. (I pretty much never look at my instagram feed and don't remember the names of most of the people I follow, let alone their genders, so I likely missed some but ah well.) Some of these are more cosplay, larp, or vintage focused accounts, but there's some sort of sewing and/or costuming on all of them.
jonesyollie (friend who made the timesheet from the previous post!), bequeermakestuff, evilqueenbeecosplays (sadly there aren't many ladies in this post, but I'm sure there are more out there!), ora_lin (they sell patterns!), noodle.stitch, ashlgcostumes (they have a lot of youtube videos and a nice speaking voice), rose_prince_lee, qtcostumer, enby.vintage, kiyoteacups, transcending_time_costuming, slightly_teddy (he's also on tumblr but hasn't posted in ages), angryhistoryguy (he once said in a facebook comment that he has so many transmasc reenactor friends that they could make a Monstrous Regiment), woodsmokeandwords, and marlowelune (SUCH good historical/fantasy everyday clothes, agh! love their wardrobe and illustrations!).
Honourable mention to matthewpcarlsen and dario_princiotta, who haven't put pronouns in their bios and I don't want to speculate on anyone's gender, but it's some good gender juice either way. Matthew pairs a bushy moustache with perfectly fitted Victorian gowns and looks amazing in them, and Dario is really into tightlacing and weird sculptural corsetry.
This is, alas, not a particularly diverse list of people. Like the costuming community at large, it skews towards white and afab, but that does seem to be gradually improving over the years - I certainly see a lot more people of colour doing historical costuming now than I did a decade ago. (I've been into historical sewing since approximately 2010).
As your ask demonstrates, when people don't see themselves represented in a space they're more likely to avoid it/assume it's not for them, which is the entire reason I occasionally mention being trans in my posts!

“Peacock” comes from @marlowelune’s nonbinary gender presentation system. Stag/fox/swan for masc/andro/fem, sparrow/crow/peacock for less to more ostentatious.
can you give me a link to the post? this seems kinda cool imo

✨Introducing: A new collaborative project between Marlowe Lune and Old Growth Alchemy!
✨The Storyteller's Treasury is a celebration of beloved fairy tales and the feeling of slipping into a land once upon a time. In this ongoing project, @oldgrowthalchemy and @marlowelune will guide you on an enchanting (and delicious) journey into the lore that continues to resonate through the centuries, and it begins with: The Storyteller themself.
✨The artwork above for “The Storyteller’s Treasury” will be August’s Postcard of the Month for the Merry Blackbird Postcard Society! Crow Collector and Raven Dandies will receive a 5x7 postcard of this piece!
✨Old Growth Alchemy has brewed up a companion tea to accompany you on many a long night by the storyteller's fire listening to tales spun from your favorite books of old. The Storyteller will be available exclusively through their monthly tea club, the Old Growth Alchemy Tea Guild, as August's member blend. The Guild opens on August 1 and closes August 5 to new members, so follow along to be alerted when the membership is open once more! The twitter algorithm did something good for once and gave up this beautiful piece of art. It’s by the illustrator Marlowe Lune (who appears to have all but left tumblr) but you can find their twitter here: @MarloweLune

Soooooooooooo I'm making something.....
Tumblr media
Well yesterday I stumbled upon a drawing by @marlowelune, a fanart of another drawing by Edward Gorey. And I immediately felt obliged to make a fanart of this fanart with my characters, I admit that the version of @marlowelune It was the one that inspired me the most, so it has the most similarities with it.
I'm testing ways to illustrate the story for my TCC, this is the first test, I'll see how it turns out and see how manegeble it is, after all I need to illustrate at least three chapters.
Probably tomorrow I'll be posting the finished results.

Do you have a dream project? Do you like creating character designs or world building better? What artist influences your style the most?
Hello! First of all I'm so sorry this has literally taken me MONTHS to answer, I got a bit overwhelmed at the be dinning of the year and wanted to give a proper answer,maybe add a doodle, and then that kept me from actually answering which is... Ridiculous.
So here I am, and here is my answer, at last!
Dream project? Right now there's two that come to mind:
1) I'd love to co-create a comic/webtoon/graphic novel with my partner revolving around Lux and Oz, two of our OCs (for whom we have a lot of lore written down).
2) It would be amazing to get hired for some sort of visual novel / point and click adventure game or any game mostly based around 2D illustrations. I'd be ecstatic to work on a cast of characters to bring a story to life. Maybe one day!
Characters or World building? I definitely enjoy characters the most, but also exploring how things might have lead to them being that way and extrapolating from an idea into a bigger world. So I guess I go from character (or concept) to world-building.
What artist influences my style the most? There are so many in this department, many of them contemporary artists I've met right here on social media. I'll try to edit this with a detailed list at some point in the future, but here are some names (just be aware that their tumblr might not be their most active social media):
@iliothermia
@eliotbaum & @vivtanner
@sacrxm
@houndsaint
@marlowelune
@fionastaples
Hope this was fun to read and sorry again about the wait!

mARTch 31: Free Choice
“The Modern Gentlemen is, above all, a self-made man.”
Decided to do a DTYIS for this last one! The artist is @marlowelune on Twitter (and insta I believe). Their artwork and sewing projects are absolutely beautiful and blow me away every time, so go check them out! The DTYIS isn’t held here on Tumblr, but I still wanted to do it bc it looks super cool, and I am very proud of the result!
Also, we’ve reached the end of mARTch! Another year, another month done (it’s April I know my internet was out yesterday and I couldn’t post but uhhhh). Thank you @bweirdart for this challenge. I wasn’t as consistent as last year (y’all didn’t even see it tho so 🤷🏻‍♀️), but that didn’t stop me. I’m very proud of my art through this month, and it has really helped me practice. Even if I didn’t do it every day, I put quality first when I had the chance to sit down, and I think it paid off. See y’all next year (or in October for another challenge)!

Patreons I Support
Between the impending Twitter collapse, the growth of unethical AI applications in creative spaces, and [gestures broadly at the world], I’m trying to more regularly uplift the art and artists I admire—and in this case, materially support.
Many folks are familiar with Patreon. If you’re not, Patreon is a membership platform that allows creatives to earn a monthly income and deliver rewards to their subscribers. Ko-fi, Buy Me a Coffee, and Memberful are similar alternatives.
A lot of Patreon creators offer tangible perks but personally, even if they didn’t, I would still patronize them! Below are the Patreons I currently back:
Tumblr media
Kelly Turnbull
https://www.patreon.com/coelasquid/
I’ve been a fan of Kelly Turnbull’s work for over a decade, starting with her webcomic Manly Guys Doing Manly Things and then everything I’ve seen from her since. Turnbull is an animation director, cartoonist, and remarkable storyteller. I’m not familiar with most of the media she makes fan comics for and I still adore all of it; her capacity to convey complex character relationships is a masterclass in dialogue writing and visual narrative. If I ran a major animation studio I would give her an absurd amount of money and tell her to do literally whatever she wanted, that is how strongly I feel about her work.
Tumblr media
Marlowe Lune’s Merry Blackbird Postcard Society
https://www.patreon.com/marlowelune/
Marlowe Lune is an illustrator of very trans historical and fantasy subjects. Their art style is stunning, unique, and thoughtfully researched, and subscribing to their Patreon comes with the perk of regular postcards of their prints. My partner and I have a lot of Lune’s art up around our house, and though we cannot put up anymore lest our abode just become a Marlowe Lune tribute gallery, I remain subscribed because I’m a big fan of what they do and the postcards make great gifts.
Tumblr media
max graves
https://www.patreon.com/maximumgraves/
I read the webcomic What Happens Next earlier this year and immediately went and subscribed to graves’ Patreon because it’s that fucking brilliant. It's an ingenious exploration of queer victim culture and (absence of) accountability and true crime and so much more. One of the main characters is a trans guy who was an accomplice to a murder but won’t delete his My Little Pony tumblr. There’s actually no explanation I can give of WHN that will convey how remarkable it is so you should just go read it. This comic is really special and I’m really looking forward to seeing where graves goes with it and what he creates in the future.
Tumblr media
Possum Creek Games
https://www.patreon.com/possumcreek/
If you’re a fan of even one Possum Creek Games title (I am a fan of many) or indie tabletop roleplaying games writ large, supporting the Possum Creek Games Patreon is some of the best money you could possibly spend. It gets you access to the wonderful community that is the PCG discord, some behind the scenes stuff, first looks/early access to games, and some really thoughtful more academic-type writing about ttrpgs and storytelling from their Editorial Director, Jay Dragon. Possum Creek is a strong positive force in the indie ttrpg scene and I really appreciate their generative, nuanced, and people-first approach to everything.
Tumblr media
Snake Discovery
https://www.patreon.com/snakediscovery/
Snake Discovery is an educational reptile YouTube channel (and now zoo). There are a lot of deeply unethical animal content creators and so I appreciate that the people behind the channel, Ed and Emily, are thoughtful, transparent, and very specific about standards of care. I really love reptiles but do not presently have one or plan to have one in my care any time soon, so I enjoy living vicariously through the dozens of videos of baby snakes they share each year.
There are other wonderful creators out there whose work I greatly admire but unfortunately I cannot support infinite Patreons. If you love an artist’s work and you have the means, I strongly encourage you to find a way to regularly support what they do, whether that’s via Patreon or some other means.
