Though British farming is arguably at the most precarious point in its long history – thanks to changes caused by Brexit and food industry subsidies, lack of clear food production policies and increased concern over environmental issues – more women than ever are choosing a career in agriculture and, more importantly, moving into leadership roles.
Back in the 1970s, Holly Collins was studying for her A-levels in Sussex. While her friends sent off their university applications, she wrote to the Royal Agricultural College asking for an entry form, hoping to follow her dream of becoming a farmer.
“They wrote back with the following answer: ‘Dear Miss Collins, we do not admit women.’”
Undeterred, she worked on a farm the following summer: “A lot of the tasks then were manual labour, so I’d just turn up at the farm gate and ask for a job. I was paid much less than the male students I worked with because I was female. The farmer’s father told him that, because I was the hardest worker, he should pay me the same as them – but he didn’t.”
Things, says the 64-year-old who now has her own upland farm, Hollin Bank, at the head of Coniston Water in the Lake District, have improved a lot for women in agriculture since then.
Though British farming is arguably at the most precarious point in its long history – thanks to changes caused by Brexit and food industry subsidies, lack of clear food production policies and increased concern over environmental issues – more women than ever are choosing a career in agriculture and, more importantly, moving into leadership roles.
Minette Batters, the first ever female president of the National Farmers’ Union of England and Wales (NFU), may have stepped down this spring after six years in office, but women are still well represented in the union, with Rachel Hallos, a South Pennines farmer, installed as NFU vice-president and Abi Reader as deputy president for NFU Cymru. The Great Yorkshire Show has just got its first female show director in its 186-year history – dairy farmer Rachel Coates takes over after this year’s show in July. In the field of specialist skills, the UK has also just appointed its first female wool grader. Amy-Jo Barton, 22, is based at British Wool (formerly the British Wool Marketing Board) in Bradford where she sorts wool by hand based on style and characteristics; a job she finds “very therapeutic”.
While women comprised 17% of farmers in 2019, data from the Office for National Statistics for 2023 shows that of the 104,700 registered farmers, 22% are female. In the broader category of managers in agricultural services, women make up 32% of the workforce. According to recent figures from the Higher Education Statistics Agency, 64% of agricultural students are women. For an industry that historically relies on father-to-son succession to pass on land and which used to exclude women from many of its educational establishments, farming has come a long way.
Coates, incoming director of the Great Yorkshire Show, says: “Women have always been the backbone of a farm. Now they’re no longer in the kitchen tied to the Aga, they’re at the forefront of the industry. It’s good to see this take-up of leadership roles.”
Louisa Dines, principal lecturer in agronomy at Harper Adams University in Shropshire, thinks farming has lagged behind in terms of gender diversity but is finally catching up with other industries.
“Farmers’ wives and daughters were always important – farms are typically family businesses and intertwined with home life – but women used to operate below the radar,” she says. “Historically local meetings were in the pub or village hall. Wives often weren’t invited or had to look after the children. Even if they did go, it can be intimidating walking into a room full of men, but new communication platforms – such as social media and video conferencing – have made it easier for women to take part.”
There are more than 14,000 members of the Facebook group Ladies Who Lamb and farmers such as the Yorkshire Shepherdess and the Red Shepherdess have huge followings on TikTok and Instagram. Dines says she recently attended an agritech conference to promote links between women in farming in Poland, Ukraine and England. Previously these women had worked in isolation but not had a sense of community. “It was so interesting to see how far we’ve come.”
Traditions need to change more, though. The average age of a British farmer is 59 and the business is still typically passed down the male side of the family. A 2022 survey in Northern Ireland found that inheritance was the second biggest challenge faced by women in farming. The biggest was male dominance.
Molly Lewis, whose family have farmed sheep on 250 acres of pasture in Powys, Wales, for 350 years, says this attitude is starting to shift. The 20-year-old plans to take over when her father and his brother retire. She splits her time between working in the family business and the local agricultural market.
“In the past, sometimes men felt pressured to take on the farm even if their heart wasn’t in it, but now it goes to whoever is interested. I’ve noticed a lot more women happily getting involved. It feels natural, especially here. We have an open hill farm in the Elan Valley, and do a lot of community work with all our neighbours. You see women and girls on the hills doing the same jobs as the men and no one thinks anything of it.”
Lewis also talks of the community’s fury at the Welsh government’s sustainable farming scheme – the post-Brexit plan for funding the industry which includes ensuring 10% of farmland is under tree cover.
Collins’s farm has low densities of mixed livestock and a nice sideline in educational courses teaching traditional farming skills such as dry stone walling and coppicing. It’s currently host to two masters students researching finance and birdlife. She brought in two women – Megan Jones and Katherine Andrews – to manage Hollin Bank alongside her.
She says she has had difficulties with “a lack of respect” from male farmers. “But I am learning at a late age and from the wonderful young women who work with me that you don’t have to instil fear in others to succeed in this very male world. We try to be warm and encouraging of anyone who is interested. I’m not sure this is a ‘female’ attitude to farming but I suspect it might be.”
None of the three at Hollin Bank grew up in agricultural families, bucking the tradition of succession. While Collins had a “striking ambition” to farm her whole life, her colleagues originally worked in conservation and nature restoration.
“As 70% of the UK is farmland, I wanted to understand how conservation and agriculture intertwine,” says Andrews. “I also believe we need to localise the food economy to save food miles, create jobs and deepen our connection to the land.”
If farming is in crisis it may be this new generation who look to change the status quo who will be able to find a resolution. All of them seem keen to evolve. Coates’s big ambition for the Yorkshire Agricultural Society is to engage young people because “we need to make farming relevant – there are going to be changes in agriculture over the next few years and we need to adapt”.
Dines points to the increased importance of marketing and communication – from farm shops and crafts to environmentally friendly farming practice – “all the public-facing activities at which women excel”.
Jones, who worked in restoration before joining Hollin Bank two years ago, also points to the need for communication within the indusry as well as with the public.
“We need to strengthen food systems that value farmers’ extensive knowledge of the landscapes they work in,” she says. “I think we need to listen to farmers and figure out what works financially and ecologically. How can we build resilient ecosystems?”
The reason so many more women have moved into farming is perhaps best explained when Jones talks about what she enjoys most about her work.
“My favourite thing about working on a farm is the daily and seasonal rhythms. Each day you adapt and respond to the environment and the animals. Days when we move the sheep or cows are always good days, walking with them is like a moving meditation. For someone who spent very little time doing practical work growing up, I find working with my hands very rewarding and empowering – especially as a woman.”

Studies from 2016 show that at least 15% of Roma people have a disability, amounting to over 1.6 million people between the European Union, the Western Balkans and Turkey. The available data highlights a high prevalence of disabilities among Roma communities, also due to the health inequality gap and poorer health condition of the Roma population. However, the information on Roma with disabilities is very limited.
To gain a better understanding of the discrimination and social exclusion that Roma with disabilities face in Europe, we have conducted a research study based on the data collected by the EU Agency on Fundamental Rights (FRA) and the research from the European Roma Grassroots Organisation (ERGO) Network. The outcomes and analysis are published in a joint EDF-ERGO Network briefing on discrimination and social exclusion of Roma with disabilities.
The briefing highlights a comparatively high risk of intersectional and multiple discrimination for Roma with disabilities, with the disability marginalisation adding to the systemic racial discrimination and antigypsyism that keeps them at the margins of society. Discrimination affects their access to basic services such as inclusive education, healthcare and long-term care, their integration into the job market and, in turn, their overall socio-economic condition.
Findings
Tumblr media
Available data clearly show that Roma with disabilities encounter more obstacles than the average to complete quality education, 81% of them dropping out of education early. Early school abandonment and inequalities in educational outcomes are partly encouraged by the bullying and harassment that young Roma people with disabilities endure in school settings and that, according to the FRA, affect 27% of them, as well as by a general trend to falsely diagnose Roma children with developmental and learning disabilities, leading them to be placed in segregated schools with reduced curricula.
As a result of the low average educational attainment, young Roma with disabilities encounter numerous issues entering the labour market. Within the age bracket 16-24, 63% of Roma with disabilities is neither in education, employment or training – with the percentage raising to 84% for the people of the same age with high support needs. The situation is further worsened by discrimination during job search and on the workplace: many respondents claimed to have felt discriminated against when looking for a job, largely because of being Roma.
The limited access to education, lower access to employment, and unequal access to social protection make so that Roma with disabilities stand an exponentially higher chance of living below the poverty line: 82% of persons with disabilities with moderate support needs, and 90% with high support needs, are at risk of poverty. The marginalisation of Roma with disabilities also reflects on their access to the housing market: inability to pay rent and anti-Roma discrimination when looking for housing are part of the reason why 55% of Roma with disabilities experience housing deprivation and 75% live in overcrowded housing.
The Roma experience an overall poorer state of health than the majority of the population, with a higher prevalence of chronic illnesses and a lower life expectancy. Deterring them from accessing healthcare and long-term care are not only the high cost of treatments and the lack of information, but also discriminatory attitudes informed by antigypsyism. The ethnic discrimination intensifies for those with some form of disability: 18% of Roma with disabilities with moderate support needs and 17% of Roma with disabilities with high support needs felt discriminated against in accessing healthcare, compared to 12% of Roma without disabilities. It is also important to note that the inaccessibility of healthcare system and healthcare services create another discriminatory barrier for Roma with disabilities.
Conclusions
While some of the issues highlighted in our briefing could be addressed by separate Roma and disability policies, the current legal framework adopted by the EU does not offer a comprehensive protection for people facing intersectional and multiple discrimination, e.g. on grounds of ethnic discrimination and disability. Because of this, Roma with disabilities are left with limited protection of their rights and limited legal remedies to respond to their marginalisation.
We therefore, together with ERGO Network, recommend the EU and Member States to adopt targeted actions, in particular:
Increase the visibility of Roma with disabilities and address policy gaps at the European and national levels
Adopt a comprehensive EU equality law to prohibit intersectional and multiple forms of discrimination
Collect equality disaggregated data on people living in institutions in the EU;
Invest in housing first initiatives and targeted outreach measures to improve access to healthcare and long-term care services for Roma with disabilities;
Involve Roma with disabilities and their representative organisations in designing, implementing and monitoring policies that affect them.

is there some type of decline in maturity in sk? these idols over recent times dont exactly uphold the most normal people in the idol scene in fact some of our faves barely finished school as it is and im thinking with tiktok aiding idols to be excused from putting real effort into something even if effort is put in there still seems much drama around them, be it made up from staff or another agency trying to sabotage another groups idol, lots of copyright claims, sex crimes and over the years having idols off themselves or be offed doesnt exactly bode very well and it generally seems very hmm shit its the only word i can think of to describe it.
is this why theyll never be taken truly seriously nor be up for a grammy? cause it seems like a literal hellhole and i truly question why parents willingly allow kids to sign up for it knowing that some idols have passed on youngish due to some extremes in the idol scene. its not somewhere id feel comfortable debuting i was debating the other day would u pick simon cowell or jyp?
if u wanted to debut in a group, yet theyre both equally awful but the idol scene reputation has gone down considerabely yet theyre still churning out groups and luring in the kids kinda sounds like something diddy would do. and if i had a child id absolutely say no no way would anyone allow child to endure what the other idols have had to endure. the thing is tho some of them genuinely suit being on the stage and in their groups they fit in well so its 50/50 but its still so weird how the parents are ok with what they let their kids do in terms of them wanting to be idols very young.
Frankly, I feel like there has been a maturity decline all over the world, not just SK - and yeah, I'm not sure if I would call it a "maturity" decline exactly, but more so an "intellectual" decline maybe? A "common sense" decline, perhaps? lol Once influencing and being a "social media personality" started to prove to be solid careers, where people could just do nothing major, know nothing much, and get tons of money off of being good looking, fitting into some sort of standard or catching people's attention somehow, that's when kids (and not only!) stopped wanting + seeing the need to pursue education (as a whole, and not just higher education) and to educate themselves on general matters. So, if people don't educate themselves and just follow these easiest paths to money and stability and success… you know... this is what we get. Plus, there's a dream being sold to these people, and the sick marketing behind it is what keeps the machine alive. Who would prefer to have a 9-5 job, working for someone else whom they might or might not hate, after wasting 3-6 years in university and all that? Being young (!!) and getting payed to travel the world, take some pictures, put on some cute outfits and making friends with relevant people just seems way better, no? When it comes to kpop, more specifically, though, it's pretty much the same thing, except here we have more of a giant, ruthless popularity contest - and that's what these idols are mostly being trained for. These companies have realized that being obsessed over by the public makes way more money than being talented or intelligent, and so that's what they are looking for and what they have in mind when they put out these groups. Everything's a product. It's rarely about the music; it's about how easy and well they are able to sell something. And here I wouldn't blame the industry completely or the parents and idols/trainees themselves, though. I think it's a 50/50 thing, really. And, of course, we have to keep in mind that the entertainment world has never been fair or particularly ethical! Everywhere you look, at any point in time, there is always something messed up that we know of already or discover. And then, as for the parents allowing their children to get into this business and them wanting to be in the business, despite knowing everything that happens or could happen, well… that's up to them. The risks are known. But, of course, when you start something new, you always try to be positive and to assume that nothing bad will happen, right?

The Left Alliance and the Greens are now the only political parties in parliament which clearly oppose Finland withdrawing from the Ottawa Convention banning anti-personnel landmines, the news group Uutissuomalainen reports.
A survey of parliamentary party group leaders found that the National Coalition Party, the Finns Party, the Christian Democrats and Movement Now are in favour of withdrawing, while the Social Democrats and Swedish People's Party are willing to discuss the issue.
The Centre Party did not respond to the question.
However, Ilta-Sanomat points out that the Centre Party's chair, Antti Kaikkonen, told the party newspaper Suomenmaa at the weekend that anti-personnel mines must be re-evaluated if the Finnish Defence Forces (FDF) demand it.
The debate on anti-personnel landmines was reopened at the weekend by the FDF's commander, General Janne Jaakkola. He told Finnish news outlet MTV the changed security environment is now different from when Finland joined the Ottawa Treaty in 2011.
Prime Minister Petteri Orpo (NCP) told Iltalehti on Sunday that the nation's foreign policy leadership is discussing the land mine issue. Defence Minister Antti Häkkänen (NCP) said on Monday that he launched a study on the need for anti-personnel mines already this past summer.
The government is currently finalising its latest defence policy report. The report is due to be submitted to Parliament during before the end of the year.
More resources for police
This past autumn, the government decided to increase the budget for the Interior Ministry by 19 million euros, of which around 11 million will be allocated to the police, in particular to fight street gangs, juvenile crime and the grey economy.
The additional resources are expected to be allocated to police departments in the capital region and in Central Finland.
Hämeen Sanomat is among the papers reporting that the number of police officers is expected to increase by just under 60 members next year.
Additional personnel have already been recruited for operational police tasks, in particular for criminal investigations, and operations targeting gang crime and cybercrime.
According to preliminary estimates, 310 new police officers will graduate from Finland's Police University College this year and 250 next year. The number of openings for police training was increased to 500 this year, up by 100 over previous years.
Over 100,000 foreign students
The news agency STT takes up figures published by the Finnish Education Employers organization (FEE) showing that there were more than 114,000 foreign students studying in the country last year.
The number of foreign students in vocational and other higher education and has doubled since 2014 and tripled since 2009. The number of foreign children and pupils has also increased in both early childhood education and other forms of primary and secondary education.
"The fastest growth has been in vocational education and training, where there were over 40,000 foreign students last year. The internationalisation trend is positive and necessary, as Finland needs immigration for work and education," FEE Managing Director Susanna Niinistö-Sivuranta said in a release.
The number of international teaching staff also increased at all levels of education during the past year, according to the FEE report.
Home purchase discounts
The new housing market remains stagnant, new houses and flats are selling poorly and builders are now more willing to negotiate discounts on list prices, reports Helsingin Sanomat.
According to the paper, there are more than 3,000 new homes for sale in the capital region.
Among the sellers interviewed by HS was Markus Heino, CEO of JM Finland, who said that right now it is difficult to sell new homes without negotiating over price.
According to Heino, how much can be cut from list prices is a case-by-case matter, depending on factors such as overall supply in the area.
"Some discounts are very small, others can be more than 10 percent," he told HS.
JM Finland has also adjusted its list prices, but Heino added that it is unlikely that the market will see big price reductions.
There are already small signs of an upturn in the market for older homes, and Heino said he believes this will soon be reflected in the new housing market, as well.
Cold and colder up north
A new record low temperature for this early winter season is possible in Lapland on Wednesday night or early Thursday morning.
The coldest temperature so far this season was -22.5 Celsius on 21 November in Utsjoki in the far north of Finnish Lapland.
A forecast carried by Iltalehti looks to chilling daytime temperatures in Lapland this week of 10-20 degrees below zero.
According to Foreca weather service meteorologist Joonas Koskela, if skies remain clear, part of Lapland may see the thermometer dip down as low as -25 Celsius overnight.

Interview round 3 here we go! Today!!! This is their final interview according to their process.
I’m very torn between these two jobs. They’re extremely different. I have the second interview with the other job tomorrow.
Company A
For profit
Referrals from an insurance company
A little sales based / clients don’t know we’re calling / May not want help
Adults with possible undiagnosed mental illness but could be anything
Only background we have is their medical history
Company car
Would have an office / paperwork is computer based
My territory is one city
Potential for case load of 100
Need to build brand new connections with agencies/market to these agencies for partnerships
Company B
Non profit (I think- need to ask Thursday)
Client led referrals from agencies
Child welfare working with the parents/guardians and helping to manage behavior or other challenges with the kids
Can get background from the agency
Fully remote
Work From home office but fully computer based
My territory is the whole state
Case load is dependent on severity of current case load
Need to build some new connections in other areas / have a huge connection to child welfare based agencies due to my previous job/umbrella network/supervisor
I think after interview 2 I am leaning more toward company b just because it’s not cold calling again with clients who don’t want help/don’t know they’ve been referred. I also know the child welfare agencies and education system in the majority of this state, would just need to learn more about the south end. My old supervisor is a great resource and could help initiate connections for me in a lottttt of this state. I also already have some connections built in three counties. The territory is larger but most of the agencies cover multiple counties. Our umbrella agency was over the whole state. Their only downside is that is likely grant based verses the first where it’s extremely secure and connected to big companies.
Company A I would need to put in a little more work, but also my roommate has many connections too in this area, but maybe not as in-depth.
They have comparable salaries, but I have the potential to be hired on at a higher rate with company B, but I think it’ll only be by 1k. So, same thing really.
I turned down the last agency. They took less than a business day to decide, only talked to ONE referral, and offered it to me literally right after they hung up the phone with her. She was messaging me about the call as they were talking to me about the offer. Red flaggy, like how desperate were you to fill the spot? I read reviews and they have extremely high turn over.
Anyway, things are looking up. Not trying to get ahead of myself, but I think I have a lot to offer both agencies experience wise and connection wise. I’m feeling very confident.

"Invisible Chains: Unveiling the Hidden Forces Behind Human Trafficking"
Human trafficking, including the trafficking of children, is a complex and devastating crime that occurs worldwide. Several key factors contribute to its occurrence, and understanding these causes is crucial in combating this heinous practice.
Tumblr media
Economic Factors: Poverty and lack of economic opportunities are major drivers of human trafficking. People living in impoverished regions often become vulnerable to exploitation, as they may be lured by promises of better jobs or higher wages. Desperate circumstances can push individuals to accept risky opportunities without fully understanding the risks involved.
Tumblr media
Demand for Cheap Labor and Sexual Exploitation: The demand for cheap labor and commercial sexual services fuels human trafficking. Industries such as agriculture, construction, manufacturing, and hospitality often rely on low-cost labor, making them potential hotspots for trafficking. Similarly, the demand for prostitution and the sex industry creates a market for traffickers to exploit vulnerable individuals, including children.
Tumblr media
Social and Political Instability: Conflict zones, regions with weak governance, and areas affected by social unrest provide fertile ground for human trafficking. Displacement, breakdown of law and order, and the breakdown of social support systems create an environment where traffickers can operate with impunity. The chaos and desperation that follow such circumstances make individuals, particularly children, more susceptible to exploitation.
Tumblr media
Gender Inequality: Women and girls are disproportionately affected by human trafficking, primarily for sexual exploitation. Gender discrimination, lack of access to education, limited job opportunities, and societal norms that devalue women contribute to their vulnerability. Gender-based violence, including domestic abuse and sexual assault, can also make individuals more susceptible to trafficking.
Tumblr media
Lack of Awareness and Effective Law Enforcement: Inadequate awareness and weak law enforcement systems contribute to the persistence of human trafficking. Many victims remain hidden due to fear, stigma, and lack of knowledge about their rights. Insufficient resources, corruption, and inadequate coordination among different agencies hinder the effective identification, prosecution, and rehabilitation of traffickers and victims.
Tumblr media
Addressing the causes of human trafficking requires a comprehensive approach that involves improving economic conditions, addressing gender inequality, strengthening law enforcement efforts, promoting education and awareness, and providing support and rehabilitation services to survivors. Efforts must focus on collaboration between governments, NGOs, and international organizations to implement strategies that prevent trafficking, protect victims, and bring traffickers to justice.
