On the Care and Keeping of Grad Students

Did you know, that when you take a MM candidate, deprive them of enough sleep, and let them loose on the world, you get really interesting results?

For example, tonight, mine was folding one load of the massive amounts of laundry that needed doing when it suddenly discovered a lone sock.

It looked at this article in distress before loudly proclaiming “THE MOON! THE MOON HAS STOLEN MY SOCK! THE SCOES!”

With complete seriousness, I should add.

And then I got the very odd look when I did not understand what were clearly, to the MM candidate, entirely logical words.

I was also just informed that I spelled its word incorrectly, and that while the pronunciation of my spelling would be technically correct, it prefers this spelling, because “it looks like scores”.

Once again, with full sincerity.

This is a PSA: be nice to your masters candidates, of any discipline. They are very fragile creatures.

So, there's this awesome person I know. I met them when I was a young, goofy, impressionable freshman in college who was still somewhat in the "I'm back at the bottom of the ladder and therefore EVERYONE OLDER THAN ME IS AMAZING AND INTIMIDATING" stage of freshman year. 

Our paths intersected a few times in small ways at first - they lived on the same floor as me, as a member of the same scholars group I was in, and they recommended that I attend a meet and greet for one of the on campus groups, which I did. We hung out, along with a group of several of their other friends, on the first trip the scholars group took that year, to NYC.

We spent a night chatting out of the blue in the lounge on the floor about all kinds of great nerdy things. We grabbed dinner and talked about all sorts of random things.

I'm not really entirely sure when it happened, but somewhere in there we became friends, so that was cool. We also chose to live together the next year. And... well, let's be real, it really just sort of spiralled out of control from there... in the best way possible.

Mark is one of my closest friends (and my QPP to boot) and I'm so glad we had those random encounters early on, because I don't know what college would have been without our friendship, but it sure wouldn't have been halfway as fun. This past almost-year has been incredibly weird, as we've seen a lot less of each other in person than I'd gotten used to, but we find random odd times where our schedules intersect and we make it work. And I'm so glad we do, because it means the world to me still to have someone so awesome in my life, who accepts me readily no matter what, and who has never been anything less than supportive.

So yeah... I could say more, but really, all of this is mostly just to say... hey, markspants.
