Dead Voices On Air offers a spaced-out remix of The Drood song ‘It Must Needs Wither’

Feb. 2023 (DENVER, COLO.) — On Friday February 24th, seminal industrial sound artists Dead Voices On Air released a remix of The Drood song It Must Needs Wither on Emergency Hearts records to all major music platforms.

The original song was written, performed, and recorded by The Drood in Lafayette, CO US, and features Nathan Jamiel (Synths, Guitars, Vocals), Daniel Watts (Percussion, Synths), and Hayden Peltier (Bass Guitar). The remix was produced and engineered by Mark Spybey in Yorkshire, UK.

The song is inspired by Shakespeare’s Othello and dedicated to the memory of the people we know who died from COVID-19. All parts were initially recorded as live improvised takes. Post-production cleanup and punch-ins were added later but the core of this song is a captured ritual.

Dead Voices On Air is the solo project of Mark Spybey who is a founding member of the influential bands Zoviet France and Download (formed with cEvin Key of Skinny Puppy). He has collaborated with a variety of bands including Pigface and The Legendary Pink Dots and with individual members of Napalm Death, Can, Faust, Swans and Einstürzende Neubauten. His other projects include Reformed Faction, Beehatch, Gnome and Spybey and Propeller.

Download III clear / yellow splatter double vinyl (1997, 2017)

Skinny Puppy’s cEvin Key and Phil Western were always Download. The first two albums, 1995′s Furnace and 1996′s The Eyes Of Stanley Pain, with involvement by Puppy’s Dwayne Goettel, Dead Voices On Air’s Mark Spybey, and Throbbing Gristle’s Genesis, have such an wild and distinct technical wizardry that it has yet to be matched. That’s how amazing they still are. The third record, III? It’s amazing in its’ own right, more magical than anything. Twelves tracks will take you to a way distant and surreal place you couldn’t imagine. Goettel had just passed away and his own angle would forever be absent, leaving Western to provide the electronic spectacle and bewilderment that should be experienced.

Artoffact, a division of parent label Storming The Base, did what Nettwerk refuses to do by re-issuing some of Key’s works on vinyl in 2017. Two colored pressings in clear / yellow splatter vinyl and “orange illuminous insect” means all the allure and mysticism of III is more apparent.
