I love this so much. He's just as handsome as Katrine. ❤️ I like to imagine that they shared a very long and happy life after the war. I guess it took some time for Chuck/Amal to get accustumed to life in France but he's an open-minded guy and he trusts Katrine blindly.

Oh, this gives me so many ideas... Based on the actors' ages, Katrine and Chuck would've both been born around 1900. That means they both lived through not only one but two world wars.

I think it made especially Katrine grow up fast. Her father and fiancé (Justin) died on a mission in the last days of WW1 while she had to look after her mother and early teenage sister, Phoebe.

I imagine this experience of hardship made Katrine decide to live her life to the fullest, which is why she moved to Paris in the 1920ies and threw herself into the party scene. She tried to make a living as a bar singer but - while talented in many areas - had to realise that singing wasn't among them (just watch Kate Mulgrew as a country singer in "Dallas". 😄). It's still a sore spot for Katrine which is why she's a tad too salty with Mademoiselle DeNeuf.

Interwar-Paris is also the time and place where Katrine becomes politicised. She meets and befriends Tuvok (a highly educated man from one of the French colonies in Africa), who introduces her to the political circles that will later form the Resistance. It's also where she meets Mark, who becomes her second fiancé.

When Nazi Germany takes over Paris in 1940, Katrine and Tuvok flee to St. Claire in the south of France, where they open the 'Coeur de Lion' to run their Resistance cell. Mark joins the French Army and is soon lost. When Katrine meets Chuck, Mark has been missing for over four years and she has to assume that he's dead. When Mark returns, Chuck and Katrine were just married and run the 'Coeur de Lion' together. After an emotional reunion, everyone's just happy that they're all still alive and remain friends. Mark moves to Québec to start a new life.

Ah, I think that's enough for now. 😄 I'd like to have Chuck a background as a Native American but I don't know enough about how that might play into the WW2 scenario and how he grew up.

There are also many questions still open: Do Katrine and Chakotay have a child? What do they do in the 1950ies, 60s, 70s and 80s?

I'm pretty convinced they'd be a part of the civil rights movement in the 60s/70s. How do they eventually die?

I feel like the pain of him moving on compounded by the manner in which he did it must have been a one-two punch. Regardless of her feelings for him when she found out (I’m partial to romantic love having withered into fondness), the fact that Mark did the precise thing Janeway felt she couldn’t — enter into a romantic relationship with someone he works with — had to be a twist of the irony knife.

(I’ve written two short fics about this. One focusing on Janeway’s J/C-oriented reaction to the “woman he works with” and one focusing on the complex emotions of separation for a post-Endgame Janeway and Mark. So I’ve given this a lot of thought and I’m glad you brought it up, OP.)

WIP game

The gloriously talented @regionalpancake has tagged me to share a few lines from a WIP.

Gosh, I remember those.

Anyway, despite the stress-induced mental logjam of my creative process (I’m fine, just life as an American in 2021 — an American with a shit-ton of privilege so I’m quite fortunate as these things go), I do have a handful of WIPs that I peck at every so often.

This one probably will see heavy revision if it ever makes it to AO3, but, for now, I can share:

“Come in.” Kathryn’s arm extends, expecting Chakotay to hand her yet another padd listing crewmembers cleared for departure — a crew that had become a family bleeding away, bleeding away, bleeding away, into the coldness of space.

The door opens.

Footsteps, but she won’t look up from the computer terminal on her desk. There are reports to sign off on and ship system shutdowns to approve and ...

Something flat-bottomed and round settles into her palm.

Round and cool, like a metal canister.

Round and cool and … familiar.

Kathryn’s head snaps up. Brown eyes she’s seen only in a photograph and dreams for the last seven years meet hers and there’s no air, no air, no air.

“I made it with the good beans.” Mark’s fingers are still wrapped around the silver thermos in the palm of her hand. “Ground them this morning. Your coffee grinder. So many people told me to recycle it, but I —”

“How the hell did you get on this ship?”

Fuck.

She imagined this moment so many times. An embrace. Sweet words. Her thumb stroking his cheek, smooth-shaven and soft. Clothing falling away.

But words tumble out and there’s steel in her voice.

“Only personnel cleared by Starfleet can board this vessel. You don’t have security clearance or medical permission or …”

No, no, no. She’s the crier. Not him. The corners of his eyes become wet and she can’t — she can’t —

“Kath, Admiral Paris asked me to come aboard. He’s … he’s worried about you.”

i had more thoughts bouncing off of this wondering whether or not she’d wait to tell him all of what physically has happened to her until they reunite in person or if she’d spell it all out in a letter to him while shes still stuck in the DQ hehe undecided but i kinda like the idea of thinking shed wait just bc shes nervous and vulnerable teehee! i suppose if the conversation of his some came up maybe shed open up a little about her own kids but also kinda beat around the bush of her love life (or lack thereof) and how she came about becoming a mother of three hahaha OR MAYBE SHE WOULD bc obviously leads into the question of who the father is :)
