Twintig jaar geleden: "The worst week of my life"
Continue…

Cedric Davies, a geologist who has worked with both native title groups and mining companies in the Pilbara, including Rio Tinto, said he “wasn’t shocked that Rio had obtained a section 18 consent; that kind of thing happens all the time. But I was shocked at the scale of the site that had been destroyed and I was shocked that it was Rio Tinto … they had so long been considered to be industry leaders and I couldn’t fathom what they were thinking”.
“The events at Juukan exposed Rio behaving like the East India Company mark 2,” Davies said. “Ruthless asset stripping and shipping the profits overseas.”
He said mining companies received privileged treatment in Western Australia, down to the speed with which they can expect a response from government departments, and that makes everything much harder for Indigenous groups.
“If I ask for a map, if it’s for a mining company I usually get a map back within one or two days, with an apology if it’s later than that,” he said. “If I’m acting on behalf of an Indigenous group, it’s usually after follow-up emails weeks later.”
Bussell said the new draft Aboriginal heritage legislation will not correct that imbalance.
“I don’t see a single thing that would stop Juukan from happening again,” he said. “This is Western Australia. The mining industry is powerful. It’s a very good force for the country and for WA but when you bring it up against Aboriginal people and this remarkable heritage we have … you guys know as well as I know who is going to come out on top.”

Vampire falls chapter 3
chapter 3- two lost souls

Three towns over life seemed normal, the streets were busseling with people going about their daily lives- the shops were open and the lines seemed to be going to the other side of the street. The sun was beautiful as it beamed down on the streets.
Summer was on it's way out, the sun had been hotter a few weeks ago but like everyone else of the quiet town, one mason wood was catching the last bit of the heat before winter set in.
An nice afternoon out of school was exactly what the 16 year old needed.
"So nice that miss decided to cancel lessons" One of his friends said as she walked hand in hand with her boyfriend who didn't seem to share the sentiment that the sun was so nice
"Tailia we could be in lesson getting valuble knowledge for our college applications" he said attempting to get her to see reason, not exactly working
"Oh please it's the first month back after summer what on earth can they tell us now?"
Mason just walked along with them nodding every now and then whilst reading a book he had picked up from the school, like tailias boyfriend he was very much concerned with actually getting into a good college.
He wanted out of oregon.
He couldn't remember past age 13 when he randomly stumbeled into this town, he assumed that he had always lived here and quickly found himself back where he pressumed his home was, the orphanage.
He put it together that his parents must have not wanted him and just left him. Ever since then he had wanted to prove the system wrong, abandoned kids could make a life for themselves.
"Dipper"
He jumped upon hearing that.
It seemed to trigger something, he turned to see tailia shaking his shoulder- stupid birthmark gave him that nickname
"We're gonna go get some ice cream, fancy it"
He had to shake his head at that, he never was a fan of ice cream or stuff like that, it was a wonder whenever the two could actually convince the boy to get ice cream or something like that.
"Well guess we'll see you at school tommrow"
And with that he found himself alone again, oh well gave him time to find some tree and read against for an hour or two. He had a favourite spot near the park where children liked to play, the sun was blocked by all of the leaves on the trees so he wouldn't get sun burnt whilst trying to read.
Once at his regular spot he opened the book up finding a bookmark already in- he wasn't the nosy sort of person normally but today he seemed to be playing the role of the cat and peaked at the page
Triangular theroy- with an awful bright yellow highlighter.
Lovely
He looked at the triangle again and could swear he saw an eye.
With that images of some werid floating triangle flashed before his eyes with the same phrase repeating in his ear- trust no one.
Who, who couldn't be trusted and why did he feel like he knew that voice, it was grating and seemed to go right through him
He rembered standing in the mirror looking at himself in some sort of black suit, something like a preist would wear and his eyes were yellow, glowing almost.
He jumped back putting the book on the floor- he was not going crazy, maybe he had just not had the right amount of sleep for the past few nights. The mind starts to play tricks on someone when they have a lack of sleep - he just couldn't quite remember how much sleep it was until that started to happen.
It was like 5 days without sleep that it started right?
Ok, maybe he was going crazy.
But why did it have to start now.
He looked up and saw a teenager girl watching him- he hair was bleached completely white and down, almost reached the end of her back it seemed in that braid. She looked to be wearing a black vest with a matching pair of jeans.
She wasn't wearing shoes though, from here it looked like her eyes were blood red as she glared at him. He couldn't seem to move any part of his body whilst looking at her
Pinetree
"Bill" he jumped looking around him before looking down at his arms where glowing yellow marks were making themselves apparent
At the base of his hands were weird looking pinetree markings
Pinetree... pinetree, he had herd that before from someone
pine...pines
Who was bill?
Wait that was a dumb question- bill was that stupid triangle who he had let take over his body.... Wait why was here and not back in
"Gravity falls, why am i here, i shouldnt be here" He said to himself realising something had happened to his memories... his last name wasn't wood it was pines... dipper pines and he had a sister, a twin sister. A twin sister who he had left in a town that was being taken over by the undead blood suckers
He looked up at the girl again, no question about it that girl was a vampire, by the looks of her a newly turned one too though that didn't explain the bleach white hair.
He stood up, leaving the book and walked towards her- he didn't pay his glowing arms much mind at this moment he could figure that out later. He put his hand out towards her "Are you ok"
She looked at his arms before looking up at her, she seemed affraid but that quickly shifted into something else. She smirked at him
"Gideon has mabel, and he's going to have fun draining away whatever life she has left....He's coming for you next pinetree" She cackled at the end of her sentace before stepping out into the sun- she seemed to glow for a second before bursting into flames- near the end she realised what was happening and started screaming for her life.... No one turned around
Compulsion- that was something he had read that vampires were able to do but never on this mass scale.
He shook his head looking down at his arms where the glow was gone but the marks were still their, they had turned a pink colour like they had been burnt into his skin
Mabel
She wasn't safe alone.
He looked around the park before using his phone to look up direction, texting some sort of excuse to tailia and leaving .... Back towards what was once his home
It was going to be a few days before he finally got to gravity falls

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The vampire had mabel pinned up against the wall, one arm against her neck whilst being stood on her feet, the other hand keeping her arms above her head. Her fangs were out in some sort of twisted smile whilst looking at her like she was about to bite mabel and take away her life
She wouldn't though
Gideon would have resevered that just for himself
Greedy pig
"I will never understand why you won't just let him turn you," She said pushing further with her arm which contricted mabels airways "You could stay this beautiful for eternity and be so powerful that no one would ever mess you, never look at you wrong again"
Mabel struggled against her grip managing to slip one of her arms free from the things grip
She was not a woman, she gave that up when she allowed herself to be bitten.Amelie reacted by pushing her body right up against mabels which kept her arm completely in place

"This heartless" She chocked out before angrily gritting her teeth together and glaring at amelie as she started to struggle again- she was going to be lucky to get out of this one, without the bruising. Amelie returned the look to mabel, the look was full of an intent to kill. Her nails dug into mabels arm scratching through a few layers of her skin which made blood run down her arm. It dripped down onto mabels face, running down her nose and lips.
Amelie restrained herself somehow, Mabel knew Gideon had use for the girl,a blood bank that he could have completely to himself- to be compelled to do what ever wanted
"Who has time to feel emotions" she answered practically growling at her, she never broke eye contact from her as mabel managed to move her arms enough to loosen her knife strap. She gripped onto the handle
She had to play the waiting game
"Emotions mean your human l" Mabel answered gripping tightly onto her knife ready to swipe it, possibly in the girls face.
No she needed to get the chest
"I said bye bye to being human a long time ago" She smirked moving her body away from mabel
Nows the time
Mabel's actions were swift, she plunged the knife into the vampires chest. She screamed stepping back before falling to the floor where she revived in circles attempting to get the knife out of her chest, her skin started to turn grey and cake over itself.

Mabel stood over her and watched as her eyes turned a blue colour rather than the red colour she had always known them to be, her hair returned to some sort of blonde colour
Mabel looked down at her before pulling out her own knife and picking up something blunt to put into her chest. She moved it around a little bit attempting to make the hole in her chest bigger
She couldn't chance it
She stopped when she was sure it was safe, she put her knife back into the strap, picked up her bag and walked out- hoping to return to the safety of the mystery shack.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Gideon closed the door to his study before turning to look at the man wearing a black pair of trousers and a shirt with a pastel yellow waist coat. His back was to gideon "You remember the deal, I get those pines twins- drained of blood. You can do the draining of who ever you like" He turned around to look at gideon, one of his eyes was covered by an eyepatch while his other eye was glowing yellow "And i will reward you by making all the huamans bow down to you"<
Gideon nods at him "I already have all of the other pillars in serperation being worked away at- wendy, mabel and dipper are loose ends" The man nods before looking at gideon
He was the only one of the pillars that had been drained centuries ago, he was the one to set off this- he made the deal
"Good"
Bill turned around to look at the ruins of the town that had once been the central place of weirdness "One more thing, i'll be taking mabel once she's a floating soul"
Gideon didn't fight it- his life could easily be taken away for refusing.

Not The Marrying Kind
I could never marry Nigella Lawson. Every night she’d sneak out of bed to raid the fridge. How bad would it be to come down stairs every morning and find out all your Rice Krispies have been used to make biscuits? Why can’t she just wake up in the middle of the night and go on Facebook like every other normal person? Equally annoying would be Strictly’s, Darcey Bussell who would mark everything you did out of 10… Shopping, 7. Cooking, 8. Housework, 4. I’d be scared as there are some activities I wouldn’t want marked in case she held up a minus number card. And, much as I love Countdown’s Susie Dent, I’m not sure I’d want to be with someone who corrects and analyses everything I say. I couldn’t sit on the sofa watching football and drinking beer whilst she just sits there in her chair in “Dictionary Corner” reading her favourite book. The same book she’s been reading for 25 years. She’s so brainy, you’d think by now she’d have learnt how to spell her own name? Surely, it’s “Suzy” not “Susie”? You’d think she’d have looked that up in her dictionary? I also couldn’t marry weathergirl, Rachel Mackley because, nice as she is, she’s just like a little old lady, always banging on about the weather. “It’s too hot” or “It’s too cold.” Just give it a rest. Another weathergirl, Becky Mantin, is also lovely but – and I’m not sure if I’m imagining this – she always seems to wink at me at the end of her forecast. It’s really freaking me out. Next, she’ll be brushing her hair and crawling out of the tv like that girl from The Ring films. Luckily, I’m not famous enough to marry any of them – although I am famous for being totally unknown. But I did once go out with “Miss Rear of the Year.” And I couldn’t wait to see the back of her.

“Appearing on ITV's This Morning today (Tuesday, May 28), Craig revealed that Strictly will be following in the footsteps of the Australian version of the show.
This year's series will see the judges take part in a choreographed routine with the celebrity contestants and their pro dancers. "This year is going to be very interesting because like Australia, they are taking a leaf out of Australia's book and Dancing With The Stars in America, the judges will be dancing," Craig explained. "I don't know that Shirley Ballas knows that yet but she will be. "We dance with the contestants, you put yourself on the line, so to speak."
The so-called 'Judges' Team-up Challenge' on Dancing With The Stars in Australia saw each judge perform with two couples. The routines were then marked by the three other judges.
Craig, who is a judge on the Aussie version of Strictly as well as the British series, said: "I absolutely loved it, it was great, with Courtney Act, which was absolutely fantastic.
"I loved it. To come into the room, to choreograph, to actually create an entire scenario and star in it yourself. And be judged, that's sort of the big thing. "But I loved that, I thought it was really great fun. And I'm up as most people know for anything."
Meanwhile, a much bigger change to this year's Strictly will be the addition of a new judge after Darcey Bussell stepped down.
Craig confessed: "I was shocked. I had an inkling but there was only a slight suggestion on the tour but nothing more and I never thought that would actually happen because she's one of my best mates and I love sitting next to her, I love the fact she was whacking people with paddles."
He claimed that her successor has already been chosen but not yet revealed to him.”
Courtney is mentioned in this interview with Craig Revel Horwood - May 28, 2019

Relief with Enthroned Ruler
Artist: Chakalte' (Guatemalan or Mexican, active ca. A.D. 750–800)
Date: late 8th century
Geography: Guatemala or Mexico, La Pasadita
Culture: Maya
This Maya landmark was likely the carved lintel of a doorway from the site of La Pasadita in northwestern Guatemala carved in the early A.D. 770s. The relief panel would have been installed parallel to the floor of the entrance of a temple at La Pasadita. Visitors to the building were thus forced to look upward to view the monument, and perhaps even had to light the surface with raking torchlight in order to read the image and the text. The Metropolitan lintel is striking for the amount of pigment preserved on the surface. A variety of red, yellow-orange, and blue-green pigment remains to give clues about the original brightly colored appearance of the lintels. The jade jewels of the main characters and the details on the ruler’s throne glisten in blue-green, a color that symbolized the ‘first/newest’ and most precious materials. In the 8th century, the small hilltop site La Pasadita was caught between the power struggles of the self-proclaimed divine kings of the river kingdoms of Yaxchilan (modern-day Chiapas, Mexico), and Piedras Negras (Guatemala). During the Classic Maya period (ca. A.D. 250-900), the two major royal courts vied for power, paid tribute to one another, intermarried, and engaged in conflict with subsidiary local lords. Loyalties sometimes shifted, boundaries between the two city-states were often fortified, and artistic programs sponsored by the lords and ladies served as propaganda to stake claims on the contested landscape. The Yaxchilan kings and queens favored elaborate sculpted doorway lintels at the royal capital, and they made sure their local allies marked their palaces in the same way. At least a dozen related lintel reliefs are known from subsidiary sites around Yaxchilan. Likely commissioned by the Yaxchilan rulers themselves, most show the ruler from Yaxchilan in the company of the local lord in a supporting role in some ritual, making an overt statement of political sovereignty. The Met’s lintel depicts three protagonists: the figure seated on the right is faced by two standing ones to the left. The main figure offering an elaborate headdress to the seated leader is the La Pasadita ruler named Tiloom (ti-lo-ma), who ruled from approximately A.D. 750s-770s, using the title of sajal, a title for subsidiary regional governors. Tiloom is represented on at least three other known doorway sculptures: one in the Ethnologisches Museum in Berlin (IV Ca 45530), one in the collection of the Museum of Ethnology in Leiden (3939-1), and one in an unknown private collection. The Berlin lintel dates to A.D. 759, and the Leiden monument dates to A.D. 766; the private collection lintel dates to A.D. 771. Based on the known sculptures of Tiloom, the Metropolitan lintel is contemporaneous with the private collection lintel, probably carved between 769 and the early 780s. Tiloom was a loyal provincial ruler to the final two major kings of Yaxchilan, the father and son rulers of Bird Jaguar IV and Shield Jaguar IV. Bird Jaguar IV ruled from A.D. 752-768, and Shield Jaguar IV from 769 to around the turn of the 9th century. Bird Jaguar IV dominates the Berlin and Leiden lintels, in which Tiloom assists in a captive presentation and a scattering of incense, respectively. The ‘Sun Lord’ captive depicted in the Berlin Lintel is likely from Piedras Negras, and is the final portrayal of the many war victories of Bird Jaguar IV, who referred to himself as ‘he of 20 captives.’ In the Leiden panel, commemorating an event that occurred seven years after the Berlin captive presentation scene, Tiloom assists Bird Jaguar IV with a ‘scattering’ ritual in which the king drops blood or incense into a basket. The lintel from 771 in which Tiloom dances in a bird costume alone perhaps signals a shift in authority from one overlord to the other; Tiloom celebrated his own right to rule rather than his supporting role to the Yaxchilan king. The Metropolitan Lintel also dates from the early 770s; in fact, the same sculptor carved the two lintels, an individual by the name of Chakalte’. Sculptors’ signatures are relatively rare in Maya art, though many are known from the area around Yaxchilan and Piedras Negras. Chakalte’ was probably a sculptor who worked under the patronage of Shield Jaguar IV. That leader was known to send out sculptors to the other provincial lords, such as the rulers of the well-known site of Bonampak. Sculptors were sometimes important members of the royal courts; at Piedras Negras it seems that a master sculptor oversaw an atelier of apprentices who all signed the same works. Many hands thus crafted these royal portraits. Chakalte’ composed the Met’s lintel scene so that the visitor would be first greeted by the enthroned ruler, Shield Jaguar IV, facing the interior of the structure. The king leans forward towards his visitors, wearing an elaborate feathered hair ornament, a feathered nose plug, and a beaded jade necklace with bar pendant. Tiloom then stands proudly presenting the Yaxchilan holy lord with a headdress and what could be packets of incense or a plate of tamales. Tiloom wears a jaded headband and human head pectoral, with an elaborate woven skirt with a geometric pattern. A third personage stands behind Tiloom in a similar outfit but with a type of sombrero associated in other scenes with travelers or merchants. The text names the Yaxchilan "divine" lord with his pre-accession name of Chel Te’ Chan K’inich, which he changed to Shield Jaguar early in his reign because it was a namesake of ancestral rulers of the kingdom. The text naming Tiloom as the sajal, provincial lord, is squeezed in next to the ruler’s arm and the offertory headdress, almost as if Chakalte’ had not originally planned to include it. A bowl of sliced fruit with seeds visible sits under the throne, presumably part of the offering brought to the seated ruler. La Pasadita was visited in the 1970s by renowned explorer and monument recorder Ian Graham, but subsequently became dangerous for scholarly visits because of border conflicts during the decades-long civil conflict in Guatemala. Land mines and security problems prevented archaeological work until 1998, when Charles Golden and colleagues performed reconnaissance in the area. Even today the site lies within a troubled zone suffering the effects of narcotrafficking and illegal settlements within the national parks in the Usumacinta River drainage. The Metropolitan lintel provides key information for the understanding of Classic Maya politics on the eve of institutional collapse at the end of the 8th century. It shows the final major Yaxchilan lord receiving tribute in the form of food and regalia from a lord loyal to his warlord father, known as "he of 20 captives." But by the beginning of the 9th century, the dynasty at Yaxchilan ceased to build temples or commission monuments, silencing the voices of La Pasadita lord Tiloom and his sculptor of choice, Chakalte’. Ripples on the sand
And tiny little scratch marks
Sideways these little soldiers crawl —
Dance.
Light ballerinas in slow, scientific movement until they stop
And meditate on the centimeters they’ve moved, on the shadow they feel or whisper of wind that’s swept them.
In and out of their burrows as a bulldog passes by.
A bigger crab makes their way …where?
Toward the ocean, but it’s a long way.
It’s scurry marks pass right by my feet, where she must have busseled by minutes before I got there.
Busseled like she’s in New York. But nothing here is like New York

Reading The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood, I was a bit daunted by how to create a menu in theme with the book. In a dystopian society, what do they eat? How do they eat? How do they cook? Thankfully, Miss Anya Spector came to my rescue. “Why don’t we do a Birth Day Party?” Duh. A Birth Day Party. Though this is an oppressive society, they seem to splurge when it comes to the day their Handmaid’s gave birth. This fact opened up options for me. Here, I want to explain my research, as well as my choices for the menu for this week. The three stages in this process are as follows: research, prep, and cooking.
1. Research
The background of the book is a bit vague. We don’t really learn what happened to the US until page 174 of the Anchor Books edition. I tried to mark down any mention of food, but I also found a list on the website Bookmenus.com. There were many foods mentioned, but the most mentioned were oranges and coffee. Because Anya Spector and I live on coffee, this would automatically make the menu. It is now tradition to begin a recording session with a strong cup. Oranges, however, stumped me. I knew we should do a luncheon, but what savory options would be included?
That’s when I found an interview with the production crew of the new Hulu TV adaptation. A lot of research went into making decisions of what to include in grocery stores like Loves and Fishes in the show. Production designer Julie Berghoff said to a Marie Clare writer visiting set, “Every piece of fruit had a thought process behind it—when she gets oranges, the implication is, ‘Okay, they conquered Florida.’ If they had artichokes, it meant they conquered California. The evolution of Gilead was always in mind.” So that was it. Oranges and artichokes were enough inspiration to start a menu.
In Gilead, there seems to be a black market where rich wives can find luxury gifts, from cosmetics and lotions, to exotic cheeses and canned goods. Following the logic of Berghoff, assuming Florida and California had been conquered, and the Marthas had access to their agriculture, as well as some black market items, they could create a bountiful Birth Day banquet, fit for a Gilead luncheon.
One thing that stood out to me in the books was that cooking had become a bit more pure. No longer are there processed, pre-made foods in Gilead. Everything is homemade, so that was something that we wanted to emphasize in our own work… Not that we’ve actually served anything store bought other than the Harry Potter Candy. However, the homemade bread from P&P, and homemade macarons are very different. Everything to follow is made by us.
2. Preperation
Because I agreed to make quite a big spread for this book, my preparation began days before our actual recording. Quick tip: most soups can be made in advance and frozen! Almost all soups have a base that can be separated and frozen, while garnish can be made the day-of.
So I made the soup first. Butternut squash is hard, so make sure you have a sharp knife, sharp peeler, and strong grip. When roasting, make sure you dice vegetables as uniform as possible for even cooking. Metal spoons work wonders at scraping out squash. Save the pulp for a squash bread, especially pumpkins. The seeds can be roasted and salted for a healthy snack! When roasting the squash (see recipe below) toss roasting vegetables in the combination canola oil and EVOO. This mixture lowers the smoke point and help avoid over caramelizing the vegetables. Then I place a small piece of butter at each end of the roasting sheet for the nutty browned butter flavor. Finally, just barely cover the roasted vegetables with vegetable broth. You can always add more, you can’t take it out. However, if your soup becomes more like a puree, thin with more broth. Remember the more you thin, the less seasoning it will have so be sure to continue to taste. Separate into servings and freeze for freshest taste. Thaw the morning-of.
Next I prepped the artichokes. Artichokes have a low yield, so we try our best to avoid cutting the yield down further by wasting much of the plant. Cut the stems off to make the artichokes sit flat on a cutting board. Next cut tips off, at least an inch and a half down the artichoke. Trim the other untrimmed leaves with kitchen sears. Soak in water with fresh squeezed lemons, and be sure to rub the leaves and stem in lemon to prevent discoloration. I’m soaking mine for half a day. When they are done, I will steam them until the are tender, around half an hour. The day of the book club meeting, I will stuff them and roast them.
For the chicken, the oranges can be sliced the day before. Beware! You will smell like oranges all damn day. The Brussels Sprouts can also be cleaned. I tear the outside leaves off the sprouts, cut the stems off, and slice them in half. Store in water and lemon to prevent discoloration. The chicken can also be cleaned and trussed the night before. Run under cold water, and pat dry. Stuff with garlic cloves, onion halves, lemon and orange halves. Truss chicken to prevent the stuffing falling out. Rub in butter. Salt and pepper the chicken just before it is cooked. Pan sear for a beautiful golden brown color. For the gravy, make sure you pre-make the veloute base (blonde roux with stock, reduce until thickened. Skim the scum it creates to reduce floury flavor!). Mix veloute base with drippings and reduce.
Finally the fruit. For your fruit salad, make sure you have a good arrangement of fruit. Too many tart fruits together will make your mouth turn inside out (i.e. pineapple, oranges, grapes, green apples, raspberries…). Instead, mix with softer flavors like strawberries, red apples, melons, etc. For the “can”-died pears, we’re using canned fruit so it is already soft. Don’t overcook these, or they will turn to mush. You only want to heat these up. Immediately mix in the butter with spices. Finish with the whiskey. Be careful! Any time you are cooking with a high-alcohol content liquor, there is a chance it will go up in flames! This is called flambe. Don’t panic if it happens. Enjoy the pretty colors! Alcohol burns off very quickly. As long as it stays in the pan, you are safe. If you try to fling it into the sink, you risk spilling it on something that will actually catch fire. Instead, tend it carefully and it will go out.
**Macaron vs Macaroon
Okay let us get one thing straight. There is a difference between these two cookies, so let me educate y’all. For this podcast, Hale graciously cooked us macarons and we put them on a painted foam tree for pictures. However, many people will think they are macaroons, which would be untrue. Many of you may know the double-O Macaroon. This meringue cookie is popular in the US during Passover, and to understand that you need to understand the history of the cookie and how the French macaron became the coconut macaroon you find in cookie tins.
So the “French” Macaron actually came from Sicily (shout out to my fellow Sicilian co-host Hale). Macaron is actually related to the Italian word ammaccare, meaning “to crush.” This relationship probably refers to the act of crushing almonds into powder, the process necessary for your perfect French Macaron. However, until the 18th century, the cooks in the United States could not get their hands on many nuts or nut powders. Instead they substituted potato starch for a bit of texture, and substituted coconuts for almonds or other nuts, which were more perishable. Because the cookie has no leavening agent, they are considered acceptable for Passover! Thus, we have tins of chocolate dipped coconut macaroons for Passover in the US! However similar in history these cookies are, in the 18th century with the rise of French cuisine, these cookies deviated from each other. Though both are egg white meringue based cookies, the “flour” used is quite different. The French style is said to be more tedious and particular. Below you will see the difference between the coconut macaroon and the French macaron, respectively.

Johnson & Johnson shots are paused in the U.S. while federal health officials look into cases of rare blood clots. Photograph By Michael Ciaglo, Getty Images
What We Know About the Super-rare Blood Clots Linked to the J&J Vaccine
Experts are figuring out how to rapidly diagnose and treat the unusual clots linked to both the Johnson & Johnson and AstraZeneca shots.
— By Linda Marsa | April 14, 2021 | National Geographic
Scientists are beginning to unravel what is sparking the rare but severe blood clotting reaction that has now been associated with both the Johnson & Johnson and the AstraZeneca coronavirus vaccines.
Called cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST), this condition occurs when clots form in veins that route blood from the brain, causing strokes or other brain damage. Yesterday federal health officials recommended pausing the use of Johnson & Johnson’s single-shot vaccine after reports that six women in the United States suffered from blood clots in the brain within two weeks of vaccination. One of them died; another is hospitalized in critical condition. The pause comes on the heels of similar reports of CVST in patients in Europe who received the AstraZeneca vaccine.
Blood clots are typically treated with the widely used blood thinner heparin. But that drug can make these vaccine-related clots worse with this syndrome, because the body reacts to heparin in a way that prompts it to make more clots instead of reducing them. That’s why experts say it is vital to distinguish these clots from the more common type and determine what underlying conditions make some people more vulnerable to developing CVST.
Experts stress that people who’ve already gotten the vaccine shouldn’t panic. Nearly seven million Americans have already received a Johnson & Johnson shot, which means these adverse reactions are extremely rare. However, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration advises people who received the Johnson & Johnson vaccine to contact their doctor if they experience severe headaches, serious abdominal pain, leg pain, or shortness of breath, all of which could indicate the presence of blood clots.
“In most cases, there is a clear pattern of serious symptoms—it’s not like, I didn’t sleep well—and there’s a very tight window of about six to 14 days after vaccination, which is very helpful in diagnosing this,” says James Bussel, a pediatric hematologist/oncologist at Weill Cornell Medicine in New York City.
According to current reports, the chance of experiencing this complication is only about one in a million cases, and experts say the benefits still far outweigh the risks of remaining unvaccinated.
Pausing use of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine was done “out of an abundance of caution” and because of the unique treatment that these clots require, according to a joint statement from Peter Marks, director of the FDA’s Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research, and Anne Schuchat, principle deputy director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Johnson & Johnson also decided to pause ongoing clinical trials and delay the rollout of their vaccine in Europe while “working closely with medical experts and health authorities” and “reviewing these cases with European health authorities.”
“We want to get this worked out as quickly as we possibly can and that’s why you see the world pause, in other words, you want to hold off for a bit,” Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said at a media briefing on Tuesday. “We want to leave that up to the FDA and the CDC to investigate this carefully.”
Good News: It’s Treatable
When millions of people get vaccines, physicians expect several thousand will develop blood clots. But CVST is such an unusual case, according to Theodore Warkentin, a professor at McMaster University in Ontario, Canada, and an expert on rare clots caused by heparin.
He’s convinced the vaccines are the culprit because of a combination of factors. For one, the complications occurred within a week or two of the shot, and the extremely rare blood clots that formed in the veins that drain blood from the brain are indicative of CVST. Patients are also displaying a dual phenomenon of falling platelet counts while high quantities of antibodies attack the host platelets, a component in the blood that helps with coagulation.
In two scientific papers that appeared last week in the New England Journal of Medicine, a team of European and Canadian scientists evaluated several clotting cases that cropped up in Europe with the AstraZeneca vaccine; one team found this condition resembles an unusual side effect, called heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT), that is triggered by the drug.
Because of the similarity to HIT, researchers are now calling the new disorder “vaccine-induced immune thrombotic thrombocytopenia (VITT).”
“The vaccine is clearly linked to this rare complication,” says Warkentin, who is a coauthor on one of the NEJM papers. “We have a smoking gun.”
We don’t know as yet if there are some genetic determinants or other obvious predispositions that might make people more susceptible to developing this condition. “We know from HIT research that we can’t predict who will develop this disorder,” says Warkentin.
What is known is that it tends to strike younger women. All six patients in the U.S. were women between the ages of 18 and 48, and the vast majority of patients in Europe were less than 60 years old. Experts can’t say for sure, but they do have some clues as to why.
“It is not yet known whether oral contraceptives are the common denominator,” says Nigel Key, director of the hemophilia and thrombosis center at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine. He adds that other possibilities might make women more susceptible to clots, such as previous pregnancies.
Symptoms of VITT are relatively easy to identify, and there is a combination of tests that can determine whether a patient is experiencing this rare blood clot.
A blood test can determine if platelet counts are low, for example, and imaging tests, such as an MRI, can confirm if there is neurological damage. A therapy called intravenous immunoglobulin, a blood product that is used to shore up antibody deficiencies, given with non-heparin anticoagulants could break up the clots.
“This is a serious condition if one gets it, and the severe forms can be quite dangerous,” says Warkentin. “But it is treatable.”
New Insights into the Real Culprit
Researchers are gaining some insights into the mechanism behind the blood clots by studying the similar reactions to the AstraZeneca vaccine, which is formulated using the same technology as the Johnson & Johnson vaccine. As of April 4, EudraVigilance, the European Union’s drug safety database, had reports of 169 total cases of CVST in some 34 million people in Europe and the U.K. who had been vaccinated with the AstraZeneca shot.
It still isn’t clear why one type of vaccine causes these dangerous side effects while the others don’t, although some scientists believe the strategy used by both AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson may play a role.
All the current coronavirus vaccines are designed to provoke the immune system into making antibodies against a key protein on SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. This spike protein sits on the surface of the virus and binds to the ACE2 protein on human cells. Both AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson vaccines use fragments of DNA to instruct human cells how to produce the spike protein. Both also use modified cold viruses, called adenoviruses, to deliver these bits of genetic material to the recipient’s cells.
When cells receive the genetic instructions, they churn out spike proteins. The immune system sees the spike proteins as foreign intruders and dispatches antibodies that will recognize the real SARS-CoV-2 viruses and block them from binding and infecting cells. By contrast, the Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech vaccines use messenger RNA technology to deliver genetic instructions to make the spike protein, and don’t use adenoviruses or DNA.
The clotting syndrome itself is now believed to be triggered by an intense immune system reaction to the vaccine, which somehow prompts the production of antibodies that activate platelets.
“This is such a peculiar constellation of things,” says Alfred Lee, a hematologist and program director for the hematology/oncology fellowship program at the Yale School of Medicine in New Haven, “that it’s probably a real mechanism specific to the vaccines.”
