Favorite author you discovered this year

Both of Alyssa Hollingsworth's stories that I read were extremely moving and really spoke to me. But Pádraig Kenny's books also had very resonant themes, and I admire Jonathan Stroud's prose a lot.

Author you read the most in 2023?

For regular books, Beth Brower and Phyllis A. Whitney, seven books each. For comics, Mark Waid (for Wally West and Barry Allen), Geoff Johns (for Chris Kent, Stargirl, and Grant Emerson), and Christopher Priest (for Ray Terrill and Will MacIntyre). Hard to quantify the amount for these since some were read as collected volumes and others as individual issues, but it was a lot.

Last Song I Listened To: So You Are Tired by Sufjan Steven's. Spotify alerted me that he had a new song out so I had to check it out! I used to be big into his Illinois and Michigan albums back in the day, and his first set of Christmas albums (though my roommates hate those) but I haven't really checked out his newer stuff. Good song. Sad, painfully fragile. Just what you want from him.

Currently Watching: We finally managed to get Only Murders in the Building to work on the TV so we watched the first episode of the new season tonight! Started Mentopolis last week, finished up the first season of Fantasy High this week, and my gym show is Kimi no Todoke because I needed something sweet and harmless.

Currently Reading: I just finished The Q by Beth Brower (who also wrote my best beloved Emma M Lion) so I'm sort of between books at the moment. I should probably start the next Annotated Austen, which looks like it will be Mansfield Park... which I read last year and almost don't feel ready to reread even with annotations? I might need a bit longer or to wait until I've finished one of the poetry books I'm in the middle of (Selected Poems of Mark Strand and Jenny Joseph's The Thinking Heart). ...and I'm following the Blue Castle book club tags, with no intention to follow along in the book because I reread that last year too. I just love seeing people's reactions! ...oh blast, and I forgot I still haven't finished Our Lady of Kingdoms.

Current Obsession: I'm back in an HP RPG, Marauder Era this time so... I'm really interested in the 70s at the moment and everything my characters are into (poetry, folk music, art deco jewelry, disco) even if I don't always have time to research. Deeply obsessed with D20 and Brennan Lee Mulligan (and Worlds Beyond Number! So good! Please release this week's episode!) And this feels like it's meant to be about media but in the summer I want to eat fruit all the time and right now I'm very into frozen grapes. So delicious, so refreshing.

The Real Face of 8th President Martin Van Buren.

An updated and more realistic version of the the reconstructed life mask of 8th President Martin Van Buren cast by sculptor John Henri Isaac Browere in 1833.

During the late spring of 1833, Browere embarked on a journey to Washington with the intention of creating a life mask of President Andrew Jackson. However, Jackson declined the offer to sit for the mask. Fortunately, Vice President Martin Van Buren stepped in and agreed to be the subject instead. Browere captured Van Buren's likeness in the form of a life mask bust, marking the the last known life mask to be cast by Browere.

The life mask of Van Buren presents a different image than what we are accustomed to seeing in his later photographs. Unlike the familiar portrayal of him with disheveled hair and large sideburns, the life mask captures him during a time when his hair was brown and he maintained a more polished and well-groomed appearance.

Browere's casting process was done with his subjects sitting upright using a lighter plaster mixture that did not distort the facial features.

According to David Meschutt's "A Bold Experiment: John Henri Isaac Browere's Life Masks of Prominent Americans","In preparing his subjects, Browere oiled the skin, eyebrows and hair, and put straws in the nostrils to facilitate breathing. He then warmed his mixture in order to make it more pliable and applied it in several light layers to the face and, in some cases, to the neck, shoulders, and chest of the subject. He allowed about twenty minutes for the plaster to set. When he removed the hardened plaster, he had a negative mold; by pouring plaster into the mold, he produced a positive cast of the subject's head. He then applied the mask to an armature and molded the torso in plaster. He refined the mask by by modeling open eyes and hair, but did not otherwise alter its appearance. The result was a startlingly realistic likeness, in no way idealized.

"The substance which Browere applied to his sitter's face was his own invention. Earlier sculptors had used plaster of Paris but that is heavy material and can distort the shape of the face. Browere experimented with different mixtures of plaster until he finally produced a light weight substance. The exact composition of the medium was a closely-guarded secret which Browere passed along only to his son Albertus and which Albertus transmitted to no one."

Oooo this is tough. I have a bunch of lists of favorite quotes within different themes, and I never really pick a single favorite. For this I’ll just pull out a recent quote I liked from my list “quotes that speak to me spiritually”

I like that it makes optimism into a conscious and deliberate choice to combat the dire situations of this day and age. It’s optimism but not blind optimism. It’s carefully weighed and considered, and I just love that scientists are engaging with that now, recognizing that it’s wiser to keep our spirits up than to allow ourselves to drown in all the negative data.

21) Favourite character?

ALSO tough. One character I will always admire is Annabeth Chase. But a FAVORITE character.. hmm hmm hmm. I am a’pondering. I’ll always love Mark Watney (The Martian by Andy Weir), Pi Patel (Life of Pi by Yann Martel), Cress Darnell (Cress by Marissa Meyer), and Karana (Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O’Dell). They’re all my favorites!!!

Also, one of my friends wrote a brilliant story a while back with a character who might just be my actual all time favorite. I don’t know if she’d want me to mention the character by name or story details, but she knows how much I adore him. Yea, I think that’s my answer. Him.

30) Book recommendation?

For you, I recommend Instant Karma by Marissa Meyer, The Comfort Book by Matt Haig, & The Library of Babel by Jorge Luis Borges. Also maybe Among the Beasts and Briars by Ashley Poston? I realized in writing this I really don’t know your taste in books all too well beyond a few of your favorites but I think you could like those!

October Daye Series, Seanan McGuire

October Daye is a changling-- half fae, half human, living in San Francisco. As a knight, she does heroic things, ends up in the middle of politics she'd rather not be in, and generally ends up saving the day.

Admittedly I have not finished the series, I have I think three books to go? The beginning of the series was good-- nothing ground-breaking, but a solid urban fantasy read about faeries. The romance is light and slowburn, but there. There was enough mystery and questions in the beginning to keep up my momentum with the series, but now on book 14 I'm a little bored. In such a long series, it can be difficult to keep characters and situations fresh and interesting. The author has certainly tried, though. Decent fun series!

The Residence and First Women, Kate Andersen Brower

Kate Andersen Brower interviewed first ladies, White House residence staff, former executive branch staff, and former first families for these two books. The Residence is about the people who work for the White House and the things they witnessed and did for, in some cases, decades of work. First Women is a profile of modern first ladies, starting with Jackie Kennedy. Some materials is taken from The Residence for First Women.

I liked The Residence more than I liked First Women, maybe because I read it first. I thought the insight into the inner workings of the White House was interesting. The absolute dedication that these people have to their jobs, at the expense of their personal lives, can be astonishing. First Women was an interesting look into many first ladies, but I didn't feel like it offered anything super new or in depth. Granted, it is hard to fit a lot of information about so many remarkable women into one book.

Heart of the Damned, Lisa Edmonds. Alice Worth Series

Love the Alice Worth series! One of my candy books! And I get to be an ARC reader! Yippee!

Alice is a mage private investigator, investigating crimes with the help of her ghost sidekick and going home to her werewolf boyfriend every evening. I was worried about this series after the last book, Heart of the Pack. That felt more novella, but I think it was a set-up book for this one, which was good.

Edmonds juggles all of the problems that Alice faces in this book very well. Each issue gets pretty good coverage, and in the end it either resolves nicely or is tidied up and ready to be picked up for the next installment. If there's any complaint I have about the series, it's that things happen very fast. Alice gets a lot of shit done in one day, and I think this book took place over the course of two? Maybe three days?

The supernatural threat was interesting and suitably threatening. The way Alice solved the mystery and dealt with the issue was clever, and her struggles along the way made for a satisfying read. Romance was good, though not a stand out in this book. Alice, as a character, has grown a lot from the first book of this series and now is helping others grow and heal. It has the potential to be saccharine or to on-the-nose, but Edmonds did a really good job of toeing that line when she talked about healing. Sometimes, admittedly, she doesn't hit that mark.

One of my favorite things about the Alice Worth series is the whump-- Alice gets beat up, deals with magical backlash, gets into car accidents, and even her healing spells hurt. Don't ask me why I like to see my main characters beat up. Good news is that she has wonderful friends and family to patch her back up!

"Recent research in social psychology has stressed the fundamental role of space, place, and environmental categories in the constitution of subjectivity and the regulation of social interaction. Mostly assuming a discursive epistemological framework, this emerging trend encompasses a varied set of approaches interested in the social construction of space. The main topics investigated include the normative meaning of morally connoted spatial discourse regulating neighborhood relations; the language of place as a system of rhetorical warrants reproducing ideologies of racial exclusion; the role of place-discourse in women's narratives of identity; or the value of landscape rhetoric in the construction of nationhood... Building on a well-known idea in environmental psychology and human geography, according to which personal experience is unavoidably located, the main point made by the bulk of these studies is that our individual and shared interpretations of space and place-behavior are also culture-bound discursive resources that accomplish functions in larger sequences of social (inter)action, often echoing broad ideological processes...

A particular strand within this set of studies has more recently been concerned with "the political significance of people's psychological representations of space, accepting that "these shape people's understandings of who belongs, the rights and freedoms that people may claim and exercise, decisions where we feel 'at home' and 'out of place,' where we may move to, or avoid, and much more besides" (Hopkins & Dixon, 2006, p. 174). According to these authors, places are relevant not just because they afford and shape psychological experiences, but also because such "psychological constructs" may be socially deployed to provoke particular political effects aligned with people`s individual or collective interests and demands. This justifies Hopkins and Dixon's claim for political psychology "to recover the micropolitics of people's everyday constructions of place and space" (p.174). This task involves both acknowledging the representations of place which imply psychological notions of who we are, where we belong, and to whom we are committed, as well as the discursive processes that make place-representations work as symbolic devices with a political value This twofold political and psychological value of place representations is particularly clear

....A third psychological notion which is deemed important to public space dynamics is "territoriality," "a pattern of behavior and attitudes based on perceived, attempted, or actual control of a definable physical space that may involve habitual occupation, defense, personalization, and marking of it" (Gifford, 1987, p. 120). Public spaces may work as territories whenever people try to exert control over it, eventually leading to spatial conflicts that shed light on the two main functions of territoriality: regulation of social interaction and the display of identity (Brower, 1980). In neighborhood and community spaces, territorial behavior primarily indicates and reinforces an ingroup sense of who belongs to the place (i.e., Lalli' s urban-related identities). Also, competition for a public site as the only space available for carrying out incompatible activities might lead to struggles over the uses of that site, sometimes involving occupation, eviction, aggression, and violence . Political violence will appear via territoriality "when all other means have been exhausted, when an individual is unaware of alternatives, or when an individual is denied other means - such as when some groups, through poverty or discrimination, are denied equal access to the justice system". Similarly, Merelman (1988) underlines this political facet of territoriality asserting that "territory is an important resource in the struggle for power and status liable to political manipulation" (p. 579). Hence, both psychologically and politically speaking, through territorial behavior space reifies power and organizes the identities of, and social interactions between, the controlled and the controller (Sack, 1986). Power imbalances become visible in public spaces whenever socially disadvantaged individuals (e.g., homeless, squatters, drunks, etc.) are sanctioned and removed from the urban territory for using it in ways that defy the dominant conception of order in the city-space, breaching a micropolitics of the urban environment that calls for disciplined sociospatial behavior. Power reveals itself then as an imposed or self-applied restriction of freedom of action in the public space (Lukes, 2005)."

Notes: These are the main excerpts from a text that encapsulates some concepts I've been investigating about the hegemonic undercurrents of public and private urban/standardised design/architecture. Synthetic lights and liminal spaces come into play with these ideas as centres of passive or typically disengaged social spaces that in ways, are unregistered by users when moving through (in-between spaces, by which few things occur, and direct one between one place and another, in isolation). I have been developing an interest in handrails and the guidance that they provide to bodies in public spaces- for stabilisation and assistance, safety, and direction. Handrails guide bodies and let the mind rest or disengage while holding on. What happens when we disengage, when objects guide us more than ourselves? What occurs psychologically when the urban environment is imprinted into our understandings of movement and activity, when people live within the structures and systems formed by commercial and state agendas?

Instead They hired investigator Mark Milton to beat me into ICU out of Blue Shield Insurance, home, kids, Support, assets, etc. And screamed "crazy" at legitimate appraisals & pre-approvals from lenders on buy out of 1067vNeptune Ave. Beachcomber in Encinitas, cA 92014.

Atty Ashby Clark Sorrenson and Paralegal Grant Funk lied about defending my real estate and family. 

They're not licensed for those two important legal tasks so quit with restraining orders and attempted life with X's team of attys dozens of times coupled with slumlordingd and financial cyber abuse to hide complicit lies; similar to #FreeBritney in extreme psychologicial warfare and abuse.

I passed mental competency numerous times and what National Board of Realtors and I have found- as a Realtor for over 20 years in California- is that these attys failed to practice "Ethics" and "Race" laws with officers and judges on endless bribes and slumlordings/murders!
