Lesser Known Mountain Climbing Spots in Japan

If you love mountains, Japan has more than a hundred of them. But few are as famous as Mt. Fuji. These iconic peaks are just the tip of the iceberg. The country also has 300 other famous mountains, which are referred to as "100 Famous Mountains." You'll find familiar peaks in the Alps and the Maritime Alps among the three hundred. But some mountains are less well-known and less-visited, and those that are rarely visited are full of the real pleasures of mountain climbing. You can find more information about 日本百名山

The Akaishi Mountains, which are located in southern Honshu, are a prime example. The region contains numerous peaks on the list, and many are popular hiking and climbing spots. The Chugoku Mountains, located in the Chugoku region of southwestern Honshu, contain 1,760 named peaks, including the highest mountain in Japan, Mount Daisen. The mountain range has many lakes and is the site of numerous festivals, including the World's Highest Snow Mountain Summit.

The Okuchichibu Mountains, in the southernmost island of Hokkaido, feature more than a dozen named peaks. These are mostly volcanic in origin, and contain two distinct volcanic groups. They're a fantastic hiking destination for experienced trekkers, but there are few facilities and many trails. In fact, the mountains are often considered some of the most remote parts of Japan. Therefore, you'll want to plan your trip carefully to avoid encountering crowds.

Mt. Rausu, at 1,660 meters, is the tallest peak in Shiretoko National Park. This park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and is home to some of the country's largest brown bear population. The park is currently undergoing joint management with parts of the Kuril Islands, a group of islands that are claimed by Russia. Despite these conflicts, the mountains are a spectacular backdrop to a holiday in Japan.

One of the most popular cherry blossom spots in Japan is Mt. Buko. The 1,304-meter mountain is a popular tourist destination. In addition to cherry blossoms, visitors can also view the 350-year-old weeping cherry tree at the foot of the Taisanji Temple. The mountain is part of the top 100 of the "100 Famous Mountains in Japan."

Mount Takao is another of Japan's 100 most-visited mountains. This quaternary volcano boasts panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Okhotsk. To climb the mountain, you must hike through numerous streams and waterfalls. Luckily, the trail is 90% paved, so you can hike it comfortably in sneakers. A hike to the summit of Mount Takao is only two to three hours long.

While many tourists flock to Japan for the beauty of nature, the country also has its fair share of dangerous terrain. The volcanic Mount Aso, Japan's largest active volcano, is situated on the island of Kyushu. As of 2021, it is technically erupting, and has closed many local tourist sites. As an aside, the Japanese Archipelago has a unique geologic history. The islands were once attached to the eastern part of Eurasia.

Home to about 1,500 residents, the village sits low in the valley just beside the Tinée river. It was partly rebuilt in the 1930s after being damaged by a fire, but as you stroll through the narrow streets today, you will discover pastel-coloured facades, trompe-l'œil frescoes, sundials and fountains. The village lies close to Mercantour National Park, which has peaks over 3,000 metres tall, and the ski resort of Auron, which is linked to Saint-Étienne-de-Tinée directly by a gondola lift.

This small village in the Mercantour National Park, built on the banks of the river and in the hollow of a wide sunny valley, offers a pleasant and peaceful quality of life to residents and holidaymakers. Fast trains and paper cranes: a Japanese adventure

A ‘hop on, hop off’ westbound itinerary from Tokyo to Kobe by Shinkansen

With its futuristic cityscapes and tranquil temples, ancient traditions and cutting-edge luxury hotels, Japan is a country that must be seen to be believed. And, thanks to its legendary Shinkansen (also known as the Bullet Train), travel is all part of the experience. In this itinerary, we whisk you from Tokyo to the country’s waterfront cosmopolitan city, Kobe, taking in some of the country’s must-see sights en route. Prepare to be swept off your feet.

START IN STYLE: TOKYO

Tokyo is a city that never stands still; a sprawling mishmash of neighbourhoods each with their own distinct identity. Before embarking on your Shinkansen adventure, pause at the Toyko Station Hotel, a gorgeous red-hued building that dates back to 1915. Start your stay as the locals do, with a jog to the Imperial Palace. Then spend a day or two exploring the city: the shopping district of Ginza, the grand Gyoko-dori street, the Godzilla statue in Tokyo’s Hibiya, and the many restaurants of Tokyo Station are all on your doorstep.

To get a feel for Tokyo’s many sides, go twin-centre and book a night or two at Hotel Gajoen Tokyo. Located in the hip Meguro district, from here you can seek out trendy shops and craft cafes. And, if you’re visiting in the spring, don’t miss the annual cherry-blossom festival as these iconic trees drop their confetti-like petals.

WHERE TO STAY

At times, Tokyo can feel a little overwhelming, so we highly recommend choosing hotels in a great location, but with a sense of space and calm. Tokyo Station Hotel puts the capital’s highlights at your feet, while Hotel Gajoen Tokyo feels like a city-centre retreat: tranquil, elegant, yet moments from the trend-setting Meguro district. Suggested stay 3-5 days.

ALL ABOARD THE SHINKANSEN

Catching the Shinkansen is an effortless experience. Trains leave from both Tokyo station and Shinagawa station with surprising regularity – and typical Japanese efficiency. The average delay is just 36 seconds. And shortly after boarding you’re off: rocketing along at up to 320 kilometres per hour. Order some refreshments and take in the views as you whiz past Mount Fuji.

If time is tight, you could make the full journey to Kobe in two hours, 40 minutes. But we’d highly recommend making some detours along the way, starting with the spellbinding Izu.

THE NATURAL WONDERS OF IZU

Rugged coastline, mellow surfer beaches, dense forests dotted with traditional ryokan dwellings and onsen with their therapeutic hot waters. It’s hard to believe that the cool, green calm of Izu is under an hour away on the bullet train from the non-stop bustle of Tokyo. Known as the ‘province where the hot water gushes’, Izu is overflowing with natural wonders – take in views of Mount Fuji from the top of a volcanic crater, or wander through pink tunnels of Kawazu cherry blossom.

In perfect harmony with its unspoilt natural surroundings, ABBA Resorts Izu is a serene Japanese-inn style forest dwelling, where you’ll soon drift away into a state of Zen-like bliss in the mineral water bubbling up from the Ukiyama Hot Springs. Suggested stay 1-2 nights.

Take the Izuhakone Railway Sunzu line from Shuzenji Station to Mishima, then take the bullet train to Nagoya.

NAGOYA: THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS

Nagoya’s location means you don’t have to travel far to experience awe-inspiring natural beauty. Head to the picturesque Japanese Alps for hiking and panoramic mountain views. Or stay in the city and visit the Shirotori Garden, full of flora and fauna all year round. Known for its special Hatcho miso, Nagoya is the perfect place to sample some of Japan’s most authentic flavours, from a hearty bowl of misonikomi to the tender meat of doteni.

Take the Kintetsu Express train from Kintetsu Nagoya to Kashikojima – a complimentary shuttle bus is available from Kashikohima to Shima Kanko Hotel: the Bay Suites in Ise-Shima.

A PLACE OF PILGRIMAGE: ISE-SHIMA

Princes, poets and pilgrims have long turned to Ise-Shima for spiritual, cultural (and culinary) inspiration. This ocean peninsula is where haiku-pioneer Matsuo Bashõ was born and where the Imperial Family is said to source their seafood. A stay in Ise-Shima demands a pilgrimage to Ise-jingū. This sacred Shintō shrine complex is the size of a small city – a labyrinth of inner sanctums, outer temples and moss-carpeted courtyards in a serene forest setting. The original shrines date from the 3rd century, but the ones you’ll see are newer – tradition dictates the shrines are recreated every 20 years to specific plans and ancient practices.

Breathe in the postcard-worthy peacefulness of Ise-Shima National Park from the comfort of Shima Kanko Hotel: the Bay Suites, an all-suite Japanese retreat on the shores of Ago-Wan Bay. Enjoy the perfect pairing of sunsets with your seafood at Michelin-starred La Mer, or get a taste of everything on the intricately prepared tasting menu at Hamayu, the hotel’s second restaurant. Take the Kintetsu Express train from Kashikojima to Yamatosaidaiji, transfer to the Kintetsu Nara Line to Kintetsunara (2h30m journey) – note that the Japanese Rail Pass is not valid on Kintetsu trains.

HISTORIC NARA

Next up is the first capital city of Japan, home to eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Wander through the serene Isui-en Garden, be inspired by the world-famous Todai-ji Temple, lose yourself in the pathways that surround the Kasuga-Taisha Shrine. Along the way, you’ll encounter the sacred deer that roam free across the city. To really soak up the atmosphere of Nara, we recommend staying overnight at Noboriojo Hotel Nara. This boutique hotel is right at the foot of the Kofuku-Ji temple and renowned for its exceptional service and French-influenced fine dining. Suggested stay 1-2 nights.

Miyakoji rapid trains operate every 30 minutes between JR Nara Station and Kyoto Station – the journey takes around 45 minutes. Kintetsu Nara and JR Nara Line also connect to Kyoto.

KYOTO: TEMPLES, TEA, AND PLUM TREES

With more than 1,000 temples and countless tea houses, Kyoto is the heart and soul of ancient Japan. And, while the best way to experience the city is to step out and lose yourself in it, there are some sights every traveller should see. Fushimi-Inari Taisha is an awe-inspiring shrine made up of hundreds of vermillion gates that form a tunnel up the mountainside. And, in the evening, the softly-lit Geisha district of Gion has an enchanting, secretive atmosphere. Make time for hanami, the ancient practice of flower-viewing, before sipping on sweet umami-plum tea fresh from the city’s groves, which come into full bloom every spring for the annual plum and cherry blossom festivals.

A restored ryokan with suites discreetly arranged among green courtyards, Sowaka perfectly complements this historic city. Harmoniously designed, traditional ryokan elements such as paper sliding doors are interwoven with modern comforts. Bath amenities are made with Japanese camelia oil, and the hotel’s water is drawn from its own underground spring. It’s all designed to create that Kyoto-state-of-mind. Either take the Special Rapid train on the JR Kyoto Line which will get you to Sannomiya Station in Kobe in 50 minutes, or the high speed shinkansen to Shin-Kobe Station which only takes half an hour.

LAST BUT NOT LEAST: KOBE

Home to the highly prized Kobe beef, your final destination is an ancient maritime gateway with the verdant Rokko mountains as a backdrop and the sea stretching beyond the bustling port. Climb the Port Tower for great views of the city and then visit the numerous shops and restaurants along the waterfront, or Take a stroll along Harborland and Meriken Park. Compact and picturesque, most things can be reached on foot from your luxury hotel, Hotel La Suite Kobe Harborland. I think that more colorful post I have not create until now and for sure I will not do it soon :). Looking how the autumn is painting everything with its natural colors, I thought it was time to remove the dust of the interviews I’ve gathered and introduce you to the artist, the traveler, and one of the most positive people I know – Lyuba. As I have promised, I will present you only names that will make you smile and believe that the beautiful things that surround us are made by exactly by the people and through contact between us we can create a better world.

I have known Lyuba since the student years at Sofia University when we tried to create amazing memories while studying from the big historical books. When I offered her to take part in the blog rubric, she immediately agreed. Today, we will go on a virtual tour on the streets of the French Riviera and we will visit Nice. Lyuba has prepared interesting places to visit, useful tips and impressive details of the region. We have not been to Nice yet, but that will change soon after WizzAir has surprised us with the launch of a direct flight from Sofia, which will start in March 2018.

  How does an “om trip” look like?

A journey that you take to run away from your every day and working responsibilities, from all sorts of problems and annoyances. A journey that you take with positive and adventurous spirit. A journey where you do not hurry for anywhere, where every moment is impressive, where everything becomes unforgettable and every single person looks interesting. A journey from which you come back loaded, enriched, conceived and no doubt tired.

Can we have an “om trip” to Nice? 

Definitely! Nice is a very beautiful and charming city, at the same time calm and dynamic in its own way. It’s often called “city for retirement” but you can feel that when you live here. For a traveler, Nice has everything for every each taste even for the most fastidious one.  

I can not write about Nice and not thinking for the region in its whole. The real traveler does not come here just to visit only Nice. Only one step away from here is Monaco, Antibes, Cannes, the capital of the fragrance Grasse and other lovely towns with plenty of ateliers and galleries. Close to Nice is also Provence famous for its style and spices. Here is the Alpes-Maritimes, with their splendent scenarios and with great conditions for practicing extreme sports. Here is Côte d’Azur: tremendously picturesque, natural landmarks and various terrain. Even the light here is incredible. And depending on it the colors of the buildings and nature are changing its nuances.

Three things which we absolutely have to take with us to Nice in our luggage?

Sunglasses, swimsuits and beach shoes. Although the weather is becoming more and more unpredictable, most of the time the weather in Nice is warm and very sunny. People gather tan on the beach all year round. If you decide to get into the water, my advice is to get beach shoes: a kind of soft boot or sandal. In Nice the beach is covered by small rounded stones that are hurting you a lot when you lie down, sit or walk. These pebbles are a trademark of Nice. There are even candies in this shape and coloring.

How to look like locals?

I have not noticed a specific local fashion. You will meet at the same time very elegant and fashionable people, as well as teenagers dressed in sportswear with white sports socks. Hipsters are also popular in Nice. Perhaps the only common local feature is having a suntan.

What should we absolutely try when we’re in Nice?

Nice boasts several local specialties, strongly influenced by the Provencal, Italian and Mediterranean cuisine. Here jealously follow the tradition of the “apéro“: a light drink and bite in the late afternoon or early evening. At that time, you will taste the most famous local specialties of Socca (chickpea flatbread), Pissaladière (caramelized onion, anchovy, and olives tart), Pan Bagnat (French Tuna Salad Sandwich), and various types of tapenades. With this appetizers, you can drink a cup of Pastis (an anise-flavored spirit and apéritif from France) which resembles the Bulgarian “mastika”. This drink originates from Marseille but is traditional of the entire southern coast. For dessert, you can try the typical “Tarte de blettes”: a kind of pie with Mangold or Chard (spinach beet), raisins and other ingredients.

Where would you take us to have a cup of coffee?

I’ll take you to Castle Hill even thought that there isn’t a sign of the castle. This hill is located between the old town and the port of Nice. Today it is turned into a large and quiet park. From here there is a great view of the city and the sea. And it would be best to have a picnic on the Boron Hill. The fortress there is intact, and the view is uniquely beautiful! From there you can see the entire city of Nice, as well as the bay Villefranche-sur-Mer and Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat.

The place you’d like to share with us?

There is one place here that over the years proved very special to me. It was here that I made my first exhibition and shot my first show, and today I am managing it. I would say that this is an “alternative place of culture”. It is called “La Zonmé”, which read on verlan (an argot in the French language) means “House”. It is a cultural association with an exhibition space. In the daytime, it houses various workshops (Naturopathy, Art-Therapia, several types of Dances, Yoga, conferences etc.), and concerts, exhibitions, screenings, festivals and other cultural events are organized in the evenings. It is cozy and artistic. You have the feeling that you are at home or in a friend’s living room. And you are surrounded by friends because almost everyone who passes by the association “stays” and becomes a friend and part of the team.

We can’t do without stopping by some galleries and museums. Show us some of your favorites?

Without hesitation, I’ll take you to the “Le Pigeonnier“: Art Squat in the heart of Nice’s old town. At first glance, it looks like an abandoned apartment building. If you cross the threshold, however, you find yourself in the Wonderland. Each room is painted and converted into an art studio, and each studio has its own style. For 15 years there have been dozens of artists, whose traces we still find on the walls, the stairs, the ceilings, the closets and the furthest corners of this building. At present, 10 artists share space. Once a month, exhibitions of “external” artists are also organized.

Which book should we take with us for our trip to Nice?

I already mentioned the Provence and Grasse. Take with you “Perfume” by Patrick Süskind, the events described in the book take place exactly here. Or maybe “The Man in the Iron Mask” because he was exiled to the island of Saint Marguerite to Cannes. 

There are lots of clichés about Nice which ones proved to be false?

Everything I had heard of Nice proved to be true.

Please share your experience from your first days in Nice?

First days here were trembling but also confusing and annoying because of inevitable administrative procedures to arrange. I was lucky not to be alone. We arrived a big student group with whom I have studied in Sofia and Frankfurt (Oder). Together we discovered the life in Nice.

Where should we head to after Nice?  

Go to the Nice port and take the first ferry to Corsica. It takes five hours. You will arrive at Calvi. From there no matter where you will decide to go Corsica will like you a lot. Not coincidentally the island is called “The ‘Isle of Beauty”.

  Who is Lyuba Sofronieva?

I was born in Sofia, I grew up in Varna, graduated from Sofia University. I arrived in Nice almost seven years ago, with the idea of completing the last semester of my Master’s degree in “Media, Communication, and Culture” and then leaving for some other unknown place. I liked the city: not very large, not very small, neat and calm. Nature in the region is wonderful and varied – beach, mountain, rivers, and lakes. You always have the feeling that you are on vacation.

Soon afterward, I started an internship at the regional music magazine “Nouvelle Vague”, for which I write to this day. I was originally a music reporter and editor and then appointed as a marketing and communications manager. My daily life began to follow the rhythm of local press conferences, festivals, and concerts. So I gradually discovered, became acquainted and became part of the local cultural and artistic landscape. And I stayed in Nice.

One day, in a casual conversation with a friend who is also an artist, I decided to show him some of my old drawings as well as two or three newer ones. A few months later, we did a collective exhibition in Nice. My first one! I continued to paint in my free time. When I am drawing I feel so relaxed and liberated. I have a rich and strange fantasy. I’m an adventurous soul, curious, observant, communicative. I have an intensive and rich cultural life. And all these impressions and emotions are urged to be expressed and shared. And my favorite way to do that is painting. The reaction of the people who are seeing my drawings encouraged me to continue. Thanks to the support and the organizational spirit of my excited friends, I have over 20 exhibitions, mainly in France, but also in Zurich, Beirut, Sofia, and Varna.

The drawings take too much time and because of that two years ago I’ve decided to take a creative break. Soon after, I began to volunteer at the La Zonmé Cultural Association and soon I was appointed as a manager. And again I was with little time to create my art. On the other hand, I’ve had my own atelier-exhibition hall in “Le Pigeonnier“: Art Squat for a year and a half.
