Jean-Michel Basquiat and Madonna dated in 1982/1983. Maripol knew them both independent of their relationship with one another. She knew Madonna prior as two of her friends danced for the performer. An artist herself, Maripol hung one of her first paintings for a Madonna performance at the Lucky Strike, and she, along with David Svitzer, made the pop star jewellery.

IDEA Books: “Edo Bertoglio took himself to New York (with his girlfriend, Maripol) in 1976 and began photographing the artists, musicians and club kids of the Downtown art scene. It is Bertoglio who directed the Downtown 81 film with Basquiat. This portrait of JMB with Esther Balint (musician and actress who was in Jim Jarmusch's Stranger Than Paradise) was also shot in 1981. Esther looks Miu Miu 2025 (in our opinion).”
