Mistigram: a week ago, we shared @horsenburger's monochrome #teletext portrait of Norman Bates in Alfred Hitchcock's 1960 film #Psycho, but here's its complement, seminal "scream queen" #JanetLeigh as #MarionCrane on the receiving end of Bates' knife in the shower. This screen was included in the MIST1018 artpack collection released six years ago this month.

Y’all—I had the most incredible book finding experience today! I went on a road trip with my dad to help him run some errands, at one of the places we went they had a bookshelf with FREE books the staff were trying to get rid of. I found an entire shelf of Sweet Dreams teen books from the 80s. Totally tubular!✨👾💘 . I’m not gonna lie, I wanted to take all of the books but I thought that’d be, well, tacky. I limited myself to four of the silliest looking ones. I absolutely cannot wait to read them! 😂 . . . #bookishbitchblog #books #foundbooks #freebooks #sweetdreams #teenromance #80sbooks #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #bookworm #80saesthetic #thelovehunt #yvonnegreene #thegreatboychase #janetquinharkin #programmedforlove #marioncrane #twosacrowd #dianagregory https://www.instagram.com/p/BmQEWexlJ9u/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=redx0ki5m2z7

Thoughts : Psycho (1960)
Tumblr media
Classic films are classified as such for a reason.  Not only did they have an immediate impact upon release, but they manage to stand up to the test of time, and in a few rare instances, the experience is enriched as the years pass by.  Alfred Hitchcock has quite a few of these films under his belt, and one of the most memorable and recognizable of them all is Psycho.
The film is a series of twisting tales and misleads all beautifully laid out to a wonderfully satisfying culmination of events.  We follow the story of Marion Crane (Janet Leigh) primarily, picking up on her ending a tryst with a married man just before stealing $40,000 from a client at her job.  In a panic, she decides to run away, causing her boyfriend, sister, boss and victim of her theft to search after her.  Crane ends up at the Bates Motel, a remote location run by Norman Bates (Anthony Perkins) and his invalid mother.  The motel turns out to be more like a spiderweb, with many of the films characters become flies trapped in its midst.  The ending is one of the most iconic in film history, and one of the many groundbreaking elements Hitchcock included that was not yet standard to American film.
The claustrophobia this film creates is second to none.  Whether it be a seedy motel room, an office, a car ride, an encounter with a policeman, or even conversations that occur outdoors, it never feels like any character is capable of escaping the frame presented.  The dutch angles used for the conversations amplify the feeling immensely.  In tandem with Bernard Hermann’s instantly recognizable and memorable score, it’s hard not to feel uncomfortable while watching the movie.
The film is also well known for taking it’s biggest star, Leigh, and immersing the viewer deeply into her world, only for her to be taken away before the first third of the film has completed.  This bait and switch was historic in conjunction with the infamous shower death scene that removed her from the film.  That shower scene, along with her flushing of notes down the commode, were both controversial moments due to how candid they were, portraying things deemed inappropriate for film at the time.  Even the use of the term ‘transvestite’ at the end of the film raised some hairs.
Of all the iconic roles in film history, Norman Bates stands tall among them, chiefly due to Perkin’s chillingly layered portrayal counterbalanced against his unhinged portrayal of Mrs. Bates.  Leigh was certainly captivating in her role, setting up the aforementioned bait and switch beautifully.  Veteran actor Martin Balsam also delivered a standout performance as Detective Milton Arbogast.
There’s not much to say about Psycho that hasn’t already been said.  The film has been massively influential, spawning both a shot-for-shot remake by acclaimed director Milos Forman and a prequel-style TV series inspired by the expository back story provided in the film.  As an aspiring filmmaker, I can only hope to one day create a single film with the impact of this one, let alone a large catalog of them as Hitchcock did.

"Fear isn't so difficult to understand. After all, weren't we all frightened as children? Nothing has changed since Little Red Riding Hood faced the bug bad wolf. What frightens us today is exactly the same sort of thing that frightened us yesterday. It's just a different wolf. This fright complex is rooted in every individual." - Alfred Hitchcock #peytonsplacevinyl #hitchcock #psycho #vinyldecal #handmade #goodevening #normanbates #russell #1960 #horror #shower #marioncrane #thegreatestfilmofalltime (at Bates Motel) https://www.instagram.com/p/B8XWikkhkIm/?igshid=pzflgbw365ig

It took me a while to figure out how to recreate this iconic scene in an illustration, one of the most famous in movie history. I didn’t want to draw beautiful Janet Leigh’s character Marion Crane being murdered, enough already picturing violence against women.  I prefer the previous silent scenes building up to that moment. The sheer terror by which, under the masterful direction of Alfred Hitchock we are all Marion Crane, in our most vulnerable moment, the shower, and suddenly we see the menace of a shadow approaching. That’s the height of horror, in my oppinion. I remember seeing this movie on tv as a kid and being completely blown away by it.  #janetleigh #psycho #marioncrane #normanbates #batesmotel #alfredhitchcock #halloween #horrormovie #terror #hitchcockblondes #alejandromogolloart https://www.instagram.com/p/B3XFsC4oMXY/?igshid=5p0qibpp8t1v

“Sal”: PSYCHO (1960) is a VERY iconic film that has been referenced in other media numerous times. Because of this, I went in expecting little-to-no surprises. In this video, discuss how and why I spent most of the film questioning my sanity, questioning everything I thought I already knew about it.
If you like the video, please consider viewing some of the other stuff on our YouTube channel, S&P Productions (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCo-s4V86kh3cQfWpO3WEmEA/featured).
