The Incredible Journey (1963)
From 1948 to 1960, Walt Disney Studios released fourteen feature- and short-length nature documentaries to worldwide audiences. From Seal Island (1948 short) to Jungle Cat (1960), moviegoers were treated to stunning, innovative wildlife filmmaking accompanied by anthropomorphization via the narration’s storytelling. The True-Life Adventures series – which essentially created a genre that extends today to films like March of the Penguins (2005, France) and television series such as the two BBC Planet Earth installments – was sometimes staged and questionable ethics went into the filmmaking. Its legacy also can be seen in Fletcher Markle’s The Incredible Journey. The film – which is not to be confused by the 1993 Disney remake Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey or the 2009 BBC documentary of a similar title – nevertheless will appeal to and entertain lovers of animals with its three incredibly convincing animal performances.
The film follows Siamese cat Tao (TAY-oh), a younger Labrador Retriever named Luath, and an older English Bull Terrier named Bodger. The three pets – each one is male – are owned by the Hunter family (John Drainie, Sandra Scott, Marion Finlayson, and Ronald Cohoon), who live in Canada and are to be temporarily away to Oxford University in England. Bodger, Luath, and Tao are given to the Hunters’ friend, John Longridge (Émile Genest), who resides in Northwestern Ontario. But, soon after, a mix-up between Mr. Longridge and his housekeepers, Mrs. Oakes (Beth Amos) and her husband Bert (Eric Clavering) makes Longridge and the Oakes unaware that the animals have started a 250-mile trek through the Canadian wilderness to return to the Hunter household. Episodes of natural and manmade danger, rare respites, and scenic beauty follow through an eighty-minute film that best succeeds when the humans are not interfering in an animals’ story.
The action is narrated by Rex Allen, a “singing cowboy” and fixture of Walt Disney Studios’ nature and Western film and television productions. Allen’s presence – in most all of the films he narrated for Disney – is superfluous, but not necessarily unwelcome. Considering Disney’s inclination for storybook-like storytelling in its nature documentaries – a feature that the True-Life Adventures innovated and normalized for that subgenre – The Incredible Journey might not have been greenlighted otherwise. Allen’s twang is distinctive, and he brings a warmth and specific folksiness more acceptable to audiences in the 1960s. The narration, penned by producer-writer James Algar, is neither enlightening nor comical, and will probably be better tolerated by moviegoers of a certain age as well as children. For everyone else, imagine being stuck in a Frontierland in one of the Disney parks and having that Old West-influenced English over the speakers every few minutes.
Canadian director Fletcher Markle, for whatever reason, was selected by Walt Disney to direct The Incredible Journey despite having helmed only three films prior (1949′s Jigsaw, 1951′s Night Into Morning, 1951′s The Man with a Cloak – all box-office duds and critically panned). Markle’s greatest credit may be for his involvement in CBS’s dramatic radio anthology series, Studio One, which was later brought to television in 1948. An auteur, Markle is not. Nor is he a master visualist or storyteller, as evidenced by The Incredible Journey’s lackadaisical direction. But Markle, alongside the animal trainers and cinematographer Kenneth Peach, know exactly how to shoot the animals – from the pets to the bear to the lynx – so that The Incredible Journey’s animal performances are as realistic as possible. Editor Norman R. Palmer, a veteran of Disney television productions and the True-Life Adventures film series as well a mentor to the late Roy E. Disney, has an always-exacting eye, and sells the artifice beautifully. And like in so many of Disney’s True-Life Adventures, it is oftentimes impossible to distinguish performance from these animals being animals. It is a formula that would be replicated decades afterwards, and improved upon to make fictitious and natural behavior inseparable onscreen.
This is as successful an anthropomorphization as ever seen from animals in a live-action feature film. Bodger, Luath, and Tao’s personalities are clearly depicted and differentiated, and The Incredible Journey summons unexpectedly powerful emotions by just hanging its camera over its animal actors – the elderly Bodger in particular. The film is at its most compelling when humans are not present – and, yes, that includes Rex Allen’s narration. Though the objective of the wandering trio is to return to their human family, a minimal human presence in The Incredible Journey could have spared the film some dreadful human performances. With so much emotion and story packed into the behavior and expressions our furry protagonists, a more intrepid director might have aimed for a production unfolding solely through the perspectives of the animals.
Accusations of animal cruelty have followed The Incredible Journey in recent decades. With consultation from the American Humane Association (AHA), a 1980 revision to the Producer-Screen Actors Guild Agreement (the P-SAG-AFTRA Agreement) included protections to animal actors for the first time. Before 1980. infamous incidents like the multiple racehorse deaths while filming the chariot scene to the original Ben-Hur (1925) and the gory, sensationalized sacrificial death of a water buffalo in Apocalypse Now (1979) could not be subject to litigation and sanction. There are multiple scenes throughout Markle’s film that invite such speculation – without spoiling, two of the most germane scenes involve Tao navigating a river and encountering a lynx. Though at least one True-Life Adventure is known to have contained scenes of ghastly animal cruelty (1958′s White Wilderness), there have been no verified documents or testimonies that confirm any unethical practices by the filmmakers in The Incredible Journey. Assuming that is correct, this is an extraordinary piece of filmmaking centered around animal performances. However, too many of these different species of animals should not have shared screentime with the other.
Shot in rural Ontario and mountainous regions in the American Pacific Northwest, The Incredible Journey assures younger viewers that the animals are never in grave peril. Sure, those encounters with the bear and a lynx might have resulted in a painful scrap, but they soldier on. The film should delight the youngest children, even if the lynx chase scene might prove a little too intense at first. And if possible, one should seek out The Incredible Journey rather than its, 1993 remake, Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey. The remake introduces the voice acting of Michael J. Fox, Don Ameche, and Sally Field – distracting from the animal performances, which is a formula that Babe (1995) and few other such films have ever perfected.
Like many older Disney live-action films not entitled Mary Poppins, memory of The Incredible Journey continues to wither as its availability on television and home media is comparatively limited. The film is a refinement of cinematic techniques regarding animals that continue to be tinkered with today. But, I suspect, the primary fascination for most will come in the endearing personalities from the three pets involved. Because where practices and methods to cinema may change, the companionship and human connection to their beloved dogs and cats is enduring.

Lunch at Gabriëlskloof, with some lovely SA wines
The last day in South Africa, at least for a few weeks. Lunch with a nice crowd at Gabriëlskloof. Gathered were Brian and Marion Smith (Elgin Ridge), Peter-Allan Finlayson (Crystallum and Gabriëlskloof), Marelise Niemann (Momento), MC Lauriault (Norman Hardie Wines), and John Seccombe (Thorne and Daughters).
Peter Allan Finlayson
Crystallum Clay Shales Chardonnay 2016 Hemel en Aarde, South Africa Made in a 2600 litre foudre, this is a lovely, textured Chardonnay. Pear and citrus fruit with a bit of depth, some silkiness in the mouth, and pretty tangerine detail. Subtle, elegant and lovely. 94/100
Crystallum Mabalel Pinot Noir 2016 Kaimansgaat, South Africa 115 clone. Sappy with nice integrated greenness and fine red cherry fruit. Supple and detailed with real finesse and purity. There’s a balance between richness and freshness here. 94/100
Crystallum Cuvée Cinema Pinot Noir 2016 Hemel en Aarde, South Africa Fresh and vital with lovely red cherries and plums. Lovely finesse to this wine, which is juicy and lively but also has a silkiness to it. 94/100
Gabriëlskloof Landscape Series Magdalena 2016 Western Cape, South Africa This is 70% Sauvignon and 30% Semillon (30 year old vines from Franschhoek), and was first made in 2015, which was Pieter-Allan Finlayson’s first vintage here. Very fresh and pure with lovely citrus and pear fruit, and a subtle waxy edge. Fine, expressive personality and lovely balance. Matured in old oak. 93/100
Gabriëlskloof Landscape Series Elodie 2016 Swartland, South Africa This comes from two old Chenin vineyards in the Swartland, one on sandstone and one on schist. So delicate with very pure citrus and white peach fruit. Fine grained with lovely tangerine and spice hints. A serious wine that’s perfectly in balance. 95/100
Gabriëlskloof Landscape Series Syrah on Sandstone 2015 Bot River, South Africa This is from very sandy, rocky soil, and the grapes were picked early. Very peppery and textural with a silky edge. Elegant with lovely fruit purity. Really expressive and pure, this is a beautiful wine. 93/100
Gabriëlskloof Landscape Series Cabernet Franc 2015 Bot River, South Africa Supple and leafy with a nice green, chalky edge to the smooth blackberry and cherry fruit. This has smoothness and a lovely textural, rounded quality, with real finesse. Finishes fresh. 93/100
Momento Chenin Blanc Verdelho 2016 South Africa This vintage has 22% Verdelho from the Swartland in the blend. Fresh and spicy with ripe apple and citrus, as well as a tint hint of nuttiness. Rounded but fresh with a citrus edge and a long finish. 93/100
Momento Chenin Blanc Verdelho 2015 Bot River, South Africa This has 9% Verdelho in the blend. Fresh, lively and transparent with juicy lemons and tangerines. There’s an appealing stony freshness to this wine which also has some pear skin character. Very pure. 94/100
Thorne and Daughters Rocking Horse 2016 South Africa One third Rousanne with Semillon and Chardonnay, as well as a dollop of Chenin and Clairette. Very aromatic and taut with spicy grapefruit character, a fresh palate and great concentration of complex citrus fruits. There’s richness here as well as freshness. Lovely stuff. 95/100
Momento Grenache 2015 Swartland, South Africa From decomposed granite soils. Elegant, supple red berry fruits with a fine peppery spiciness. Lively and juicy with a red fruit focus and great precision. Such purity to this wine with good acidity. 93/100

COSTA BLANCA BOWLS ROUNDUP 6 MARCH 17
LA MARINA REPORT BY BARRY LATHAM
The Pathfinders found their way with great win of 10-4 at home against Monte Mar in the Discovery Division. John Rae, Bernie Carr and Mick Fitzgerald 19-13. John Mallet, John Morgan and Gina Hindle 20-8. Colin & Lynne Armitage and Peter Bailey 18-8. David Taylor, Dave McGaw and Lorita Rae 18-13.
The Explorers travelled to play Quesada Pearls but met a strong team and lost 10-4 although they only narrowly lost the overall score by six shots. Our winners came from Peter Parsons, Phil Pape and Carol Smith plus Alex Whyte, Shirley Hadaway and Janet Parsons.
Winter League at home to BBC and although we lost, it wasn’t a disaster as we achieved four points. Colin Armitage, Dave Taylor, Richard Robinson and Lynne Armitage beat that brilliant Jeff Richards. One of our oldest players, Alan Castle led his rink of Phil Pape, Carol Smith and Kathy Manning to an 18-16 win. The Berleen Boys did it again winning by one. So well done Alex Whyte, Jim Freeman, Mike Surch and Dave Bulfield.
Friday here again and little trip down the road for the Dolphins to play La Manga Crusaders and they surprised a few folk by getting four points. Don Harrison, Reg Jackson and Trevor Hancock a 16-11 win and the travellers return, Barry & Margaret Sadler that is plus Garth Slater with a two shot advantage. Well done the Dolphins.
The Seagulls at home to the San Miguel Cougars lost in a very close game by two shots. Our top rink was Dave Taylor, Gina Hindle and Lynne Armitage. The other two winning rinks won by just one shot each so well done Terry Perchard, Berni Carr and Barbara Forshaw plus John Morgan, Clive Pratt and Dave Bulfield.
The Sharks are the tops this week with a 14-0 beating at home of the San Luis Tigers. Should just about get all the triumphant names in. So well done Alex Whyte, Dave Hadaway, and Maureen Kidd. Dave Lewis, Jim Manning and Margaret McLaughlin. Margaret & Rob Finlayson plus Hilary Cronk. Peter Parsons, Tom Spencer and Andy Bartlett. Alan Castle, Phil Pape and Janet Parsons. And our top lot, Shirley Hadaway, John Mallett and Kathy Manning.
EL RANCHO BOWLS CLUB.
The Pintos started their week with a home fixture against La Siesta Apollos and what a glorious day it was. It was a tight match on play, with most of us I think playing some good woods, but also some that we could hardly believe, a little tricky I think. But we did hold off the opposition to take the rinks 5-1 and the overall shots. Meanwhile the broncos were playing away at Horadada against the Falcons and had a tough match, but played well enough to come away with 2 rinks, always a good away result.
Friday found the Mustangs playing at Quesada against the Swifts and a very pleasant morning it was in good company. As you would expect the Swift took advantage of the home mat, but the Mustangs did manage to come away with 2 rinks and not a great deficit in overall shots. June Whitworth, Jane Hamill and Stew Hamill 20-22. Bob Morgan, Keith Cunningham and David Whitworth 15-18. Ann Taylor, Malc Sykes and Jim Gracie 12-21. Irene Thomson, Jim Taylor and Eddie Thomson 18-14. Barbara Jones, Sheila Cooper and Geoff Jones 8-22. Henry Ryder, Jan Bright and Richard Lee 21-11.
Meanwhile the Raiders entertained Greenland Cedars and both played well to take 3 rinks each, with the Raiders taking the overall shots by a small margin. Gill Bartlett, Bob Easthope and Rob Clark 19-12. Ann C Taylor, Shirley Edwards and Bob Taylor 21-13. Pam Harris, Malc Elmore and Brian Harris 23-7. Marion Haynes, Diane Yates and Dave Haynes 12-14. Ria Dukker, Peter Blackburn and Keith Longshaw 14-20. Tricia Elsam, Tony Robinson and Graham Day 11-28. For membership details contact Brian Taylor on 965077093 or  at [email protected] or Carolyn Harris on 966774316 or at [email protected]

Our winning rink was Beryl Styring, Norman Adcroft and Alex Morrice who mastered the conditions to win by 18 shots to 13.The overall shots score being 85-131.However, despite this loss the Apollos still have a good chance of finishing as league runners up.

COSTA BLANCA BOWLS ROUNDUP - 25 FEB 17
EL RANCHO BOWLS CLUB
The Pintos, on Monday, played host to the Greenland Sycamores on a horrendous day for bowls, with a strong gusting and cold wind. But the Pintos having the advantage of the home mat, adjusted to the conditions sooner than their worthy opponents and took 5 rinks and the overall shots, well worth getting out of bed for.
Meanwhile the Broncos travelled to the Emerald Isle to play the Moonrakers in very difficult conditions on an away mat, but although they came away without a point, the ones I spoke to this morning had enjoyed the experience and one or two had been close matches.
Friday morning brought the Vistabella Conquistadors to El Rancho to play the Raiders, alas the opposition failed to provide a full team and conceded one rink, but took two, and hence the Raiders took the points by 10-4. Helga Schiffman, Gill Bartlett and Rob Clark drew the conceded rink and I am sure would rather have played. Pam Harris, Malc Elmore and Brian Harris 19-14. Marion Haynes, Diane Yates and Dave Haynes 13-18. Edward Elsam, Tony Robinson and Graham Day 18-10. Ngaio  Baldwin, Bob Easthope and Gary Newson 23-14. Tricia Elsam, Peter Blackburn and Keith Longshaw 16-23.

LA MARINA REPORT BY BARRY LATHAM
This week has started off a bit like last week. Oops. The Explorers wended their way to the place on the hill only to lose 11-3 at Vistabella Albatrosses. I’m sure there is a saying about Albatross. Margaret & Rob Finlayson plus Maureen Kidd managed a draw, Jim & Kathy Manning and Reg Jackson drew while our winning rink comprised of Dave Hadaway, Arthur Cronk and the inevitable Anne Stone.
Next came the Pathfinders who went to play at San Miguel Comets and lost 10-4. Two winners were John Rae, Mick Fitzgerald and Lynne Armitage 18-10 and David Taylor, Dave McGaw and Lorita Rae 22-16.  Hooray for the Raes.
Okay so they don’t need us, extra holiday then. Well done to the Winter League at home versus San Miguel with a10-2 win. John Mallet, Peter Parsons, Roger Stacey and Maureen Kidd won19-15; the Armitages  and the Taylors combined together to get 25-12 win; Dave Hadaway with his happy girls, Kathy Manning, Barbara Forshaw and Janet Parsons won18-15 and Alan Castle, Phil Pape, the Butlers won 22-9. No mention of Anne. San Miguel won the Berleen.
What a good Friday. All three teams winning. The Sharks played away against Vistabella Lanzadores and a close game it was, one rink drew, two others lost by one and one won by a lot. The big winner was Alan Castle, Phil Pape and Janet Parsons 32-6. The other winners were Margaret and Rob Finlayson and Hilary Cronk; Alex Whyte, Dave Hadaway and Dave O’Sullivan while the ones who drew were Roy Hart, Peter Parsons and Andy Bartlett.
The Dolphins entertained La Siesta Blues and won a closely fought match with the two points for the overall score. John Rae, Dave McGaw and Roger Stacey won 18-15; Brian Duff, Martin Butler and Maria Duff won 19-11 while John and Shirley Withers and Angela Butler made sure we won the overall with a 27-6 win.
Last but not least the Seagulls nearly got their revenge when La Manga Crusaders visited us. 12-2 winners we were. Len Daniels, Steve Hindle and Berni Carr 29-12; Keep it in the family, Sue Daniels, Mike Stone and Mo Taylor 32-11; John Morgan, Clive Pratt and Dave Bulfield 31-6; Colin Armitage, Arthur Cronk and Anne Stone 23-10; Dave Taylor, Gina Hindle and Lynne Armitage 22-15.
LA SIESTA BOWLS CLUB BY ROD EDGERTON
The week began with no fixture for the Pioneers and so the only match involved the Apollos who had a home match,in very windy weather, against Emerald Isle Neptunes.Despite convincing wins for Barbara and Jack Cooper with Vic Mahomet 32-6 and Irene Laverick with Pat and Brian Harman 20-12 the only other point came from Ann and Robert Heath who rescued a draw 18-18 with a final end getting four shots. The overall shots being 97-110.The points 9 to the Isle 5 to La Siesta.
Mixed fortunes in The Fed 4’s with the Hoopoes gaining a 6-2  home win against Montemar whilst the Parakeets lost away at Horadada by the same scoreline. Wins for the Hoopoes came from Rod Edgerton,Bill Jordan with Florence and Mike Edwards 23-7 and by Val Dalton,Norman Adcroft Jack Cooper and George Richardson 18-14 whilst Ann and Robert Heath with Tony Dalton and Vic Mahomet lost by a single shot. The winning rink for the Parakeets,in tricky conditions, at Horadada came from Joy and Brian Gardiner with Tony Campbell and Jean Cooper 17-14.
The Winter League saw the visit of Vistabella to our home and they gained revenge from the reverse fixture with a 10-2 win. Our winning rink was Joy Gardiner,Trish Reilly with Bill and Sue Jordan who won 25-15.Bad luck for the rink of Ann Edgerton, Jack Cooper,Pat Reilly and Mike Edwards who lost by a single shot in a match that was in doubt until the skips delivered their last bowl.
The Blues travelled to La Marina to play the Dolphins and suffered a narrow 8-6 reverse the shots score being a close 85-93. Winning rinks for La Siesta were Ann and Robert Heath with Pat Harman 23-9,Joy Gardiner,John Taylor and Jean Cooper 16-8 and Barbara Cooper,Vic Mahomet and Mike Edwards 14-12.
Not such good news for the Golds who lost their away match at Emerald Isle Outlaws without recording any winning rinks. On the day they faced some excellent bowling by their opponents.
Finally, some good news to report one of our stalwart members Roy Millward is at last out of hospital and on his way to recovery, although not yet available to receive visitors. We look forward to seeing both him and Sheila back on the rink as soon as possible.
