I was listening to music and thought of you, Jane Prentiss fan, are you familiar with the work of Maricka Hackman? She is a Singer-Singwritter that writes poetry about love and consumption and rot and it makes me insane
"Itchy Teeth", "Undone, Undress" and "I'd rather be with them" i heavilly associate to The Corruption but you might haver a different interpretation?
Anyway hope all is well 😘
i'm a big fan of her song "deep green" but i'd never listened to anything else by her before.
i'm listening to these songs now and i really really like them. "hold me for an hour, flowers bloom in less" is an insane lyric. thank you.
the line between the corruption and the lonely is so thin sometimes.
i always always want more recs for music that is like blood and teeth and moss and leaves and love and rot. thank you <3

It has been another absolutely huge week for new music, with plenty of great albums and tracks to discover. So like last week no Album of the Week, instead here's my roundup of everything worth checking out if you haven't already.
Albums
Orca by Gus Dapperton
If I was to have an Album of the Week, it would probably be the incredible sophomore effort from New York based singer-songwriter Brendan Rice, aka Gus Dapperton. Coming just over a year after his impressive debut, Rice has already come on leaps and bounds as a songwriter, with Orca offering an engaging mix of playful, observational lyricism and heartfelt stories of self-destruction, addiction and navigating the highs and lows of tour life. His signature slacker-pop sound has also never sounded fresher too, with Orca packed front-to-back with infectious melodies and dreamy grooves.
In all honesty any one of these 10 tracks could be classed as a highlight, with the record never once dipping into the unnecessary or uninspiring. If I was to pick just a few it would be the angsty, hard-hitting lament of First Aid, the glistening guitars and earworm chorus of Post-Humorous and banjo-driven ballad Medicine, a song that Rice has called the best thing he has ever written - on that one, it's hard to disagree.
All in all, this is one of the best albums I've heard all year, with Rice hitting his stride both lyrically and sonically. A really wonderful record that you will want to keep revisiting.
Everywhen by Sunship Balloon
Earlier this year, Murph from The Wombats released his fantastic debut solo effort under his Love Fame Tragedy guise. Now it's the turn of bassist Tord and drummer Dan to explore a world outside The Wombats, with the debut album from their Sunship Balloon project having now arrived.
Despite opening on an atmospheric, instrumental electronica number (1982) and featuring several more throughout, the pair mostly stick to the indie pop sound that made them. However that's not a bad thing at all as there are plenty of stellar moments here, such as the psychedelic, mesmeric reverb of A4 Life and the gentle pensiveness of 1000 conversations.
Why Do We Shake In The Cold? by Elderbrook
We seem to have been spoilt for great electronic records this year, and now Elderbrook has arrived to add his debut to the collection. Featuring often minimalistic and atmospheric beats that offer a suitable backdrop to his own soft, textured vocals, Why Do We Shake In The Cold? is the perfect end of summer soundtrack.
Although there are plenty of highlights including the radiant piano-led groove of the title track and the stripped-back pulse of Numb, Rudimental collaboration and would-be-festival-anthem Something About You still stands out. If you haven't seen the video for this song yet, check it out above - much like the record it comes from, it is guaranteed to put a smile on your face.
Untitled (Rise) by Sault
No-one really knows much about Sault - even after several releases now their identity is still a mystery. However one thing we do know is the fact they make incredible, timely music that makes for essential listening. Untitled (Rise) is no different, a record that celebrates black excellence arriving in a year where the voice for racial equality has never been louder.
Bringing together various elements of house, soul, disco, R&B and afrobeats, Sault have crafted a powerful statement through the pure majesty of their music. This is an album that will have you dancing one minute, then standing up and paying attention to the world around you the next. Unsurprisingly many music outlets are already calling this the album of the year, and deservedly so - if music really can change the world, then Sault are leading the way.
Tracks
Child of the Flatlands by Maximo Park
The return of Geordie indie legends Maximo Park, back with a dreamy, psychedelic number and Paul Smith's signature observartional lyricism.
Realiti by Maricka Hackman
Maricka Hackman covers a Grimes classic, stripping it back and giving it a vibrant new voice.
Pretend by nothing, nowhere
Joe Mulherin doesn't know how to make a bad song - Pretend is his signature blend of emo and hip hop, bolstered by a big singalong chorus.
Nothing for Free/Driver by Pendulum
Remember drum-and-bass pioneers Pendulum? Well they are back with their first new music in 10 years in the form of two huge new singles, with Nothing for Free in particular showing they still have something left in the tank.
Genesis by Deftones
The second taste of Deftones' forthcoming record is raucous opener Genesis, a track that helps to raise anticipation for Ohms sky high.
Bridge Over Troubled Water by Matt Bellamy
Awful on paper, beautiful in execution - Muse's Matt Bellamy covers the Simon & Garfunkel classic, a song that couldn't be more appropriate for the times.

Thanks @psychokillersneedlovetoo for tagging me! Sorry for the delay tho, took me a while to write that post
1. favorite song at the moment
Right now it's definitely Dreiviertelblut - mia san ned nur mia (I do not understand a single word, but damn the music is so good)
2. a song you associate with your favorite ship
Oooh, for kakuhida it's definitely K. I. Z. - Hurra Die Welt Geht Unter
I know there's a language barrier that may distort the original idea of the song. But in my mind this chorus fits them so well! I drew my illustration for Lowering Our Coffins listening to this on repeat, hope I could recreate the vibes
3. a song that could be about you
This one is tricky: there are several songs that I can relate to, but all of them are heavily relying on russian lyrics. If anyone takes their time to listen (I'm flattered btw), please know there's a very beautiful concept in this one: Краснознамённая дивизия имени моей бабушки - Вишневый сад
4. a song you think is overrated
Too hard to remember any, I'll pass
5. a song that reminds you of a good memory
I made an illustration after the concept of this song for Kuzinskiy Art Kontest in 2020. Never made it to the short list of course, but it was a great experience nonetheless. Still love both the picture and the song: Ольга Арефьева - Смертеутверждающая музыка
6. last song you listened to
Everything Everything - Spring / Sun / Winter / Dread
7. a song that makes you laugh
This gem: https://vm.tiktok.com/ZSJVuTTPo/ (The caption says “When the bard-only squad meets an enemy in DND”)
8. a song that you want your mutuals to listen to
That would be this beauty: Maricka Hackman - You Come Down
Tagging is v hard, let’s try this with @rem-sleep-rites @petrachord @milk-hotaru @themastertactician

What music genre does everyone listen to?!
tohru - og carly rae stan. big into pop, keep in mind its 2011/2012 so GOOD pop, early lady gaga and kesha and the like. also likes kpop and learns kpop dances in her bedroom
kyo - kyo has three songs on his ipod shuffle: creep by radiohead, teenage dirtbag by wheatus, and loser by beck. but fr i think kyo likes angsty 90s music (like the aforementioned)/grunge and also he’s a pop punk poster child, like he is unironically angsty to mcr and fall out boy
yuki - yuki listens to sad guitar man music, along the lines of damien rice, ben howard, bon iver etc. i also hc he likes sufjan stevens but his tamer stuff. sits on his bed and cries to carrie & lowell.

It’s back. Top 5 Today!
I am back. After 4 years in professional management, I am now in business for myself and am hopeful this means I will be making more time for music-listening and music-sharing. Let’s get started!
Here are my Top 5 new(ish) music picks for today!
Today, we have a rare occurrence in that all of the Top 5s are not only great individual songs but also all come from albums the entirety of which I think are amazing. That almost never happens, so soak it up! And get these albums!
The honorable mention is there because I love this one song from Beth Ditto’s Fake Sugar. album, but I find the rest of the album to be splotchy - there are some oddball arrangements that are disruptive and clunky, giving many tracks a feeling of not knowing what they are, and it’s odd that this former raging riot grrrl (of the Gossip) is not letting loose more with her powerhouse vocals. Still, Fire is a good track, so it’s worth a listen.
1. What If Birds Aren’t Singing They’re Screaming - Aldous Harding (2017)
2. Liability - Lorde (2017)
3. Otherside - Perfume Genius (2017)
4. Boyfriend - Maricka Hackman (2017)
5. Like a Woman - Kacy Hill (2017)
Honorable mention: Fire - Beth Ditto (2017)

If someone could listen to 10 songs that would help them understand you (your past, your personality, whatever) what songs would you tell them to listen to, and why?
Hi! I LOVE this question and I hate it because I’m a music nerd lol. It’s difficult but I’ll try to answer. I change all the time. This year I’ve been listening to Kendrick, Frank Ocean, SZA, Maricka Hackman, so I don’t know.I have a lot of favorite bands and artists but I have untouchable favorites like Cat Power or Patti Smith which I mentionated before. They’re more than music to me and their songs often have a social meaning and I feel touched by that. The order doesn’t mean anything.1. “Maybe Not” - Cat Power (it’s one of my favorite lyrics, I always cry when I listen to her singing this song live, It’s like an anthem of freedom, she marked me a lot. Other songs I love are “The Greatest” or “Say”)2. “People Have The Power” - Patti Smith (not my favorite musically, but I’ll go again with the lyrics. She’s a poet and an activist so her lyrics have a lot of social meaning, and this one moves me to tears, and more in these moments)3. “Gymnopédies & Gnossiennes” - Erik Satie (this calms me, simply as that)4. “Undertow” - Warpaint (my favorite band, not my favorite song tho but one of the first ones I listened)5. “Jams Run Free” - Sonic Youth (another of my favorite bands, I don’t listen to them as often as I used to, I love this song because it makes me want to dance in a weird way. Other songs are “Sunday” or “The Diamond Sea”)6. “Sophia” - Laura Marling (one of my favorite singers/songwriters, a friend of mine always says this song is “my song” because of the name, silly, but is still one of my favorites of her. I admire Laura a lot, she’s inspired by faves like Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen, Neil Young, etc.)7. “Hong Kong Garden” - Siouxsie and The Banshees (Siouxsie is a queen, she inspired a lot of artists. I love her and The Cure and that 80s post-punk era)8. “I’m Set Free” - The Velvet Underground (again with the freedom theme, I guess is more important to me than I thought, anyway, one of my favorite classic bands, like The Stones or my man David Bowie)9. “Where Your Mind Wants To Go” - Blonde Redhead (another favorite band, I love the lyrics and the music of this song)10. “Nights” - Frank Ocean (This past year I’ve been listening to him a lot, and Kendrick, SZA, J Cole, etc.)I tried… not even close but it’s a little bit of what I listen/used to listen. I would add a lot of folk and indie like Kurt Vile, José Gonzalez, The Smiths, Nick Cave, PJ Harvey, Fleet Foxes, I could go on forever…Thanks for your question, I loved it.
