Falling Leaves (1912)
youtube
The impact of Alice Guy cannot be overstated. She is one of the most important figures in cinema, and though she was only active for roughly twenty-six years. She still produced several films with groundbreaking techniques, such as the close up in 'Madame’s Cravings' (1906). However, I think the biggest impact she had was her role in narrative storytelling. 19th Century cinema was primarily films known as, 'actuality films,' not quite documentaries, but showing real events as they happened. It was Guy who thought cinema could be more. So, in 1896 she directed, 'The Cabbage Fairy' and put cinema on track to where it is today.
This particular film is one she based off the O. Henry short story, 'The Last Leaf' (1907). The film depicts Dr. Headley (Mace Greenleaf) who has just discovered the cure for tuberculosis, and as it so happens, there is a woman, Winifred (Marian Swayne), who is dying of that disease not too far from his office. Her family is distraught by the diagnosis, and the family doctor tells her mother and sister, Trixie (Magda Foy), that she will die when the last leaf falls. Trixie, being a child takes these words literally, so she goes outside and begins tying the leaves up in the trees outside.
The film ends on a much warmer note than the short story, so for anyone worried about the outcome of it, there is a happy ending. What is interesting though, is in the story, it is Pneumonia that the young girl is dying of. Mace Greenleaf, would die of Pneumonia a week after this film was released.
Solax Studios is the production company for this piece, a company founded in 1910 from Gaumont Film Company. The founding members were Alice, her husband Herbert and a third party named George A. Magie. Guy was the primary director for their films, one of the most significant being the 1912 'A Fool and His Money,' which is likely to be the first film with an all African-American cast. Major stars of the period also went through the studio, names such as Olga Petrova or Claire Whitney decorated their halls.
While Darwin Karr would be in well over 100 more films besides this one, the actress of note is Magda Foy. This is because she was often cast in Solax films, so much so that she earned the nickname, 'the Solax Kid.' In total, she appeared in twenty-three films for Solax between 1910-17, this being one of her more well-known roles.
