Today, unexpectedly I had an opportunity to shoot 2021 Nobel Peace Prize winner @maria_ressa CEO and Executive Editor of @rappler where I had previously worked as a stringer for Senate, entertainment and sports news back when I was a freelancer. I was expecting a small crowd but it turns out, only me, AP and Reuters were around. I brought all the equipment for photo and video but I wasn't prepared with questions 😅 Good thing Bogie from AP had a cheat list, so I just left the tripod, setup the audio and left the cam recording as I roamed around and shot photos. After the interview, we had a short chat and snacks with Maria who had more interviews coming in (online) After she left we filed our photos and had short conversations about the photo industry. I decided to file the video at home but to my horror, I got the blue screen of death and adobe wouldn't open after 😅 so plan was just to upload the whole video on wetransfer, which requires me to drive around the city looking for good signal for an almost 2gb file. When everything was done, I finally had the time to listen to the interview and here are some of her quotes: "I think this is what happens when you cross the line and try to pound someone to silence, I have always believed in the goodness of human nature and I feel like people have recognized it." "Would journalists have had the spotlight of the nobel with the kind of oppression, the kind of push that we've had? The fact that it's just been so difficult to do our job. "Sometimes I joke and I say I could really thank President Duterte for a lot of things, he's forced me to define my lines, stick to to the idea of my values; he's forced Rappler to be more idealistic, better, faster, more mission driven and I hope we come out of it stronger" "I wouldn't have learned as much as I did, if all of these events didn't happen. Maria Ressa is a lifelong investigative journalist, and she is among those who maintain the integrity of that title. She currently is working to combat “fake news,” especially in her home country of the Philippines. She is perhaps best known for being an outspoken critic of President Duterte (who, if you’re unfamiliar, is corrupt and maintains his power by force; it’s a pretty bad situation.) Doing this puts Ressa’s very life in danger, but she is determined to get the truth out to the public. She has recently been arrested and convicted of libel, which many speculate was a power move by Duterte. Still, she fights for freedom of the press.
