"Of course, it is strange to inhabit the earth no longer, to give up customs one barely had time to learn, not to see roses and other promising things in terms of a human future; no longer to be what one was in infinitely anxious hands; to leave even one's own first name behind, forgetting it as easily as a child abandons a broken toy. Strange to no longer desire one's desires. Strange to see meanings that clung together once, floating away in every direction. And being dead is hard work and full of retrieval before one can gradually feel a trace of eternity."
Rainer Maria Rilke, Duino Elegies, The First Elegy

Nós nos confiamos a vós, santos Querubins – e vos entregamos todas as nossas palavras.
Nós nos confiamos a vós, santos Potestades – e vos entregamos todas as nossas lutas e tentações.
Nós nos confiamos a vós, santos Arcanjos – e vos entregamos todas as nossas obras.

Some current WEC (and a few IMSA) Rumours:
Vettel to Jota Porsche Hypercar
Vettel could drive for Jota in a Hypercar next season possibly alongside Kubica and Button. While another "Top EX-F1 driver" is also in consideration. Vettel is expected to test an Oreca 07 LMP2 with Jota soon. And has not denied the rumours but has said nothing is signed yet.
Mick Schumacher to Alpine
Mick Schumacher is in talks to race for Alpine in Hypercar next year. He's likely to test the car soon and could become a driver in one of their cars next year. Milesi, Vaxiviere and Lapierre have tested the new car already.
Rui Andrade to LMGT3 with a TF Sport Corvette
Currently in LMP2 with WRT, Andrade is not expected to race in Hypercar but could go to GT3. WRT will be running a BMW in the WEC GT3 class, but Andrade his name has mostly come up with TF Sport.

Daniel Juncadella to TF Sport with a Corvette
Current Mercedes Factory Driver Daniel Juncadella is likely to join TF Sport in the LMGT3 class. And would also join Corvette in the endurance races for the IMSA Championship.
Acura to Le Mans?
The Acura currently only racing in IMSA could be coming to Le Mans. Honda Performance Development will formally become Honda Racing Corporation USA (HRC US). And this is what they said about competing at in WEC (source: DailySportscar.com)
“I think we’ve always been pretty clear. We need to look at the WEC. We have an amazing, in my humble opinion, ARX-06, which has been the work of our team, ORECA have done a stunning job, and our race teams have done a stunning job. So we were smitten with our ARX-06.
They will not be joining in 2024 but possibly 2025?
Peugeot adds a rear-wing
The 9X8 will undergo a major upgrade for 2024. Their initial revolutionary no wing design has not been exactly competitive. For 2024 Peugeot will add a new rear-wing to the car. And will also change their tyre size. Currently they've been driving with a different tyre size than the rest of the grid and want to switch to the same size as everyone else.
Alex Albon to the 24H of Daytona with Wayne Taylor Racing
After it was initially announced that WTR would be running a current F1 driver during the 24H of Daytona rumours broke loose. However Marshall Pruett has confirmed this driver to be Alex Albon.
De Vries to Toyota in 2024
De Vries could be replacing Jose Maria Lopez in the Toyota drivers squad. The Dutch driver has a long-standing connection with the team and was meant to replace Lopez for the 2023 season already. But as de Vries signed a Formula 1 contract Lopez was retained but only on a single year contract.
Isotta Fraschini is evaluating a possible second car
Isotta will be joining the Hypercar grid with current LMP2 team Vector Sport next year. However Isotta is looking for a second customer to run a second car in WEC. This could be any one of LMP2 team Duqueine, or the Swiss GT squad Emil Frey Racing.
Jules Gounon and Jack Doohan tested an LMP2 recently
Gounon and Doohan recently tested an Oreca 07 with COOL Racing at Portimao recently. Doohan could be under consideration for an Alpine Hypercar seat. Gounon was fastest among several drivers and could be looked at by other Hypercar manufacturers.
Akkodis ASP in LMGT3 with Lexus?
ASP is known to want to join WEC as a customer team. This could be with Lexus and it has been revealed that if they're successful. That their current driver Timur Boguslavskiy is under consideration to continue with ASP if it switches to a WEC program.

reading gods worst article on tma (Narrating the (Queer) Gothic in the Podcast The Magnus Archives, Maria Juko) and its so bad that its funny. btw this got published in a book (Rethinking Gothic Transgressions of Gender and Sexuality, edited by sarah faber and kerstin-anja münderlein, 2024) and I can only assume the editors didn't listen to tma themselves because good lord what are these takes. come with me as I read this mess
strong start when it claims the entities seek to torture and destroy humanity. patently untrue. we know they have some sentience, but the focus on humanity does a disservice to gerry explicitly saying "you think people are so special its only our fear that counts?". also "destroy". how are you going to get fear if the entirety of humanity is destroyed. we know what the entities wanted (or at least what the web wanted) it is explicitly stated in mag 200. it says so right there so explicitly that I find it impressive if Juko missed it.
calls the beholding the antagonist? if you want to call Any fear the antagonist id go for the web, but even then, antagonist is not the role id ascribe to a lovecraftian entity
"with the podcast’s final season set in a world dominated by the Eye that Jon et al. ultimately overcome to save the world" / "The world comes to depend on [jonmartins] relationship, with the two of them becoming queer heroes." save the world??? heroes?
4. stupidly funny implications. interesting citation for georgie but that's not important right now. the point is the fight against evil and the reading alleging tma says being queer will get you Heroic Powers. Juko's forgetting about the queer characters that get Evil Powers (all of them. all of the powers are evil. that's the point.) did the archivist utilize ace and bi power when he became the lynchpin of the apocalypse and tortured strangers
5. "As a case in point, inclusivity starts at the level of casting: female police officer Basira Hussain is voiced by Frank Voss, who uses they/them pronouns." very true but idk. frank voss and jonny sims are just pals, ill allow Some implications from this but the author is using it to imply more intentional focus on inclusivity then I think jonny was doing
6. "First, the podcast’s main character, the asexual biromantic Jon, is bestowed with supernatural powers, challenging not just heterosexual but all sexual norms of society." BESTOWED? stop using the word bestowed here oh my God. he is not a superhero!! did Juko listen to the entirety of tma without any moral grayness happening here??? also ?? jons bestowed supernatural powers are in no way related to his asexuality & biromanticism??
7. christ. this isnt a bad tma take but it is reminding me why I wanted to quit my literature analysis bachelor
8. did jon utilize ace and bi power when he betrayed martin. did martin utilize gay power when he stabbed jon. jesus christ what do you mean humanity's salvation. the apocalypse isnt fixed at the end by the power of love.
9. i guess? if you felt like it? tma really isn't a queer narrative in my option but I guess?? you could read it like that. if you wanted to. I'm unsure if you should though because these people are deeply unwell
10. "And particularly in the first seasons, Jon and his colleagues often fail to control the evil entities, losing for example colleague Tim at the end of the second season, which leads to a rift between some of the Institute’s members" yeah because truly they were thriving before that. they were the bestest of friends before tim died. they all held hands and danced in circles
11. unsure how much longer i can take this. this isn't the X-Men
12. "[Jon] could be defined as an asexual biromantic who uses his love for Martin as a form of power to save the world." no he couldn't. next
13. "With this in mind, Jon’s exploration of the Archives becomes a metaphor for accepting his (a)sexuality." HUH. NO IT ISNT? jons asexuality isn't relevant narratively At All. go home.
14. for the love of god can anyone hear me. its so dark in here. were the beholding and jonah magnus asexuality allies when they helped jon become an avatar. the sentence after this calls jon the hero of the narrative again btw. patently untrue
15. "Only by accepting his power can Jon save the world." jon didn't save the world.
Juko discusses melanie & georgie but her takes on them are pretty normal and decent in my opinion. if anyone wants a pdf of this horror let me know & ill send it. I'm so annoyed I'm considering writing an email about this. btw it called jonmartin "enemies to lovers" trope and also said their relationship "starts heteronormative and changes to a more equal footing, whilst retaining heteronormative elements". about the gay couple.
to conclude: I don't know which podcast juko listened to about a heroic narrative about queer love that saves the world, but its not the magnus archives. did you know that the eye is an asexuality ally?

Character Sheet: Nyxathe Voss
Nyxathe Voss
Nicknames: Nyx
Age: Mid to Late 30’s, she isn’t entirely sure.
Nameday: 26th Sun of the Third Astral Moon
Race: Viera, Veena
Gender: Cis Female
Orientation: Pansexual, but complicated. Romantically she really only interested that people that can keep up with her intellectually. Particularly people with heavy magical experience. With a slight lean toward women, or maybe it would be better to say she has a wider attraction to woman romantically.
Sexually she’ll sleep with just about anyone she finds physically attractive if there isn’t an emotional component to it. The only body type she’s outright likely to not find attractive is one of a body builder. Her youth was filled with mostly lithe women so extreme bulk muscle is just off putting to her.
One major catch to all this is someone that wants to have a child with her. Only Viera need apply. She’s not interested in children that life half as long as her at best and likely much less.
Of course this is born from a fear of loss so really it bleeds in to any relationship eventually. Though not to outright rejection beyond children.
Profession: Aetheric researcher, Tutor, Accountant. The later two are simply was to make money to fund the first. The former being her real passion/obsession.
PHYSICAL ASPECTS
Hair: Stark White. Wavy tending toward big curls with minimal effort. Extremely long, well past her waist, though she often keep it pulled up so it appears shorter then it actually is.
Eyes: Pale pink right eye that is slightly clouded. Very light blue left eye. The left eye is her natural color with the right being a byproduct of damage from when she was a child. Sometimes is seen wearing glasses.
Skin: Pale white, extremely smooth. In almost any light she looks like a ghost or at least someone that never sees the sun. Unfortunately for her she honestly just can’t tan at all. A best she gets a slight pink to her tone but then promptly burns with a minute more exposure. Living in Ul'dah is a bit of hell for a number of reasons the sun being one.
Reading all that does she have Albinism?
Tattoos/Scars: None to notice and she’s not exactly shy about her body. Notably not having any scars is a product of magic, in no way natural. Same with the smoothness of her skin.
FAMILY
Parents: Astrid (F) [Deceased] Malcolm Voss (M) [Alive]/ Maria Voss (F) [Alive]
Astrid, Nyxathe’s birth mother. Given birth to Nyxathe in the forests of the Skytay range. Several years later being forced to flee due to a massive fire that presumably killed the rest of the tribe. From there she took Nyxathe south in to Dalmasca and found her self joining the resistance until Nyx was badly injured. With that she took the still child Nyx and fled to Kugane where she found Nyx a magic teach to hone the child’s budding talent and then found herself work suit to her status as a Viera and skills a spy. Leading to meeting Malcolm who eventually brought her and Nyx to Eorzea. Unfortunately a run in with the Amalj'aa lead to her death by Nyxathe’s hands.
Malcolm Voss and Maria Voss, Nyxathe’s adoptive family. Malcolm met Astrid in Kugane during his trading missions from Eorzea eventually hiring her and then building a more personal relationship with the Viera. Eventually he offered to bring the two back to Eorzea with him. Once on Eorzea he introduced Astrid to his wife and officially hired her on a permanent basis. Alas one fateful caravan ride they were ambushed by Amalj'aa and taken captive. Malcolm and Nyxathe survived but Astrid did not. He’d grown close to the teenage Viera, so as a way of thanking her mother he offered to adopt her.
Siblings: Saewara Voss (F) [Alive] Andrea Voss (F) [Alive] Magnus (M) [Alive]
Saewara, Andrea, and Magnus. Oldest to youngest. All the children of Malcolm and Maria born after Nyx had already moved to Ul’dah. Largely she see’s them as siblings but siblings that she has more then a decade on. She was heavily involved in their early educations and are a large part of why she eventually started taking jobs as a tutor for other merchant families.
Grandparents: None living that she’s aware of.
Others: Aside from the family that took her in she doesn’t have any particularly strong relationships with other people. She works with a number of merchant that hire her to tutor their children, but those are all personal relationship. She’s has friends, or is at least friendly, with a few people but no one she’s claim on particular tie to. Part in due to her aversion to loss, but mostly just because she’s so obsessively focused on her research.
Not to say she’s unapproachable, just if you want to make friends you probably need to be able to hold a conversation and not be boring. That and be willing to listen when she start rambling out her latest project.
SKILLS
Abilities: First and foremost Nyxathe is a student of arcanima. In moments of pride she well might even claim to be a master of the art. Pride or not though this isn’t far from the truth. Manipulation of aether has always come easy to her, so much so her mother had her in training at a young age to prevent accidents. Thanks to that field of training she also displays a talent for mathematics, particularly geometry. No surprise considering the importance of geometry to arcanima.
That said her understanding of magic isn’t entirely limited to the one discipline. After all she lives in Ul’dah home of Thaumaturgy. She’d be remiss not to at least learn the basics there. And well Gridania is just over there. The point more or less being that she has a working knowledge of the basics of the other systems. After all her goal isn’t mastery of of one path but instead a holistic understanding of Aether and the manipulation of it. Still she has thirty plus years of study in arcanima, compared to the few years of sporadic study in to the others.
From a practical point this just means Nyxathe could be called a generalist. Healing or hurting are both things she can do in effective measure. That said she isn’t a healer, not in the traditional sense anyway, or even a generalist. Instead she’s hyper specialized in manipulating corporeal aether. Why doesn’t she have scars in spite of her relatively violent life? Unfortunately manipulating a living beings aether can be remarkably deadly if the utmost care isn’t taken and only the most minor changes effected.
Alchemy is another skill she’s invested time in to. At first simply to make her own grimoire and inks. She was constantly experimenting with new designs that it was finally suggested to her to just learn how to make them on her own. She can save money that way. But really that only made the skill a hobby until a few years past when she started to invest more effort in to learning alchemy. She was never particularly open about what she was trying to learn, but like all things that catch her attention she turned to it with pure obsession for over a year before she abruptly stopped and went back to her old research.
Nyxathe can also see aether. Her research would be infinitely harder if she couldn’t. This allows her to check aspecting at a glance, something she very accurate about. In the same it lets her look at other living beings aether, not just her own.
Something Nyxathe doesn't make public, compared to the most of the rest of this information, is that after he encounter so many years ago she discovered she had the echo. Not that she had a name for what she was experiencing, only that she didn’t die and everyone else did. A second effect of that same encounter is that she can summon Ifrit, or well the Egi of him. Though learning to do that was a years long effort later in life.
Hobbies: Research, though calling that a hobby feels a bit like a lie. Still she does so other kinds of research out of pure interest rather then some goal at times.
Swimming, She’s been pretty much obsessed with the ocean since the first time she was on a ship.
She enjoys travel and reading.
She draws on occasion, often trying out new pattern ideas for her spells but other times just geometric shapes or perspective style drawing of whatever she sees.
Cooking. It wasn’t until she lived alone that she realized she was good at cooking and enjoyed it. Of course its often a misused skill considering her obsessive distraction, and at other times just the lack of money.
TRAITS
Most positive trait: Her obsessive drive. It lets her achieve goals that would be nearly unthinkable to someone else in a time frame that is inimical to life. Goals ranging from building a room sized 3D magic circle in her apartment with out any kind of rest over three days. To the goal of simply surviving. The ability to push aside anything that doesn't matter in that specific moment, everything that does not push toward that single goal. Of course once she’s like that struggles to stop and it very much can lead to dangerous side effects, like not resting or eating for three days leading to immediate collapse upon finishing her work.
Worst negative trait: Nyxathe is always a bit emotional, but as her aetheric balance degrades Nyxathe become increasing emotionally unstable. At first simply seeming overly moody. Then beginning to drift to more extreme in to ecstatic bliss that shifts to a frenzy of rage at the drop of a pin. At the start the reactions seem extreme but logical. Eventually though even her logic breaks down. Of course this only happens as her corporeal aether attempts to assert her natural state, something that she manages daily.
Or if magical emotional volatility isn’t a negative trait then I point back to her obsessive drive.
LIKES
Colors: Really all colors, the richer the better. But reds in all forms, a number of her dresses come in rich reds. But since she lacks any real pigment she can pull over wearing nearly any color. She likes gold as an accent color. Purple and gold can be quiet attractive too. She’s not unknown to wear blacks or browns if she traveling or doing other wise dirty work.
Purely for looking though she likes greens and blues. She finds deep greens in particular to be rather soothing to look at.
Smells: She has a complex relationship with the smell of fire and ash. It’s the smell most likely to get an emotional reaction in any case, good or bad. The smell after rain. Vanilla. The ocean, though that is heavily tied to the sound as well.
Textures: The waxy smooth skin of an orange. The smoothness of silk. Cold rough stone.
Drinks: Anything sweet really. Subtle sweetness before cloying taste, but she’s not overly picky. Orange juice is a favorite. Tea, though typically whites teas. She not found of the bitterness of black teas in particular. Given some drinks mitigate that adding additions to mitigate. Fresh water, often times there is nothing more precious then a simple cup of clean, cool water.
OTHER DETAILS
Smokes: Never. She doesn’t see the point. All smoke makes her cough badly and really any burning puts her mind in places she rather not be. It’s less an issue as the years pass but really she’s just not interested in pushing the point.
Drinks: Occasionally, mostly as a social thing. She enjoys clarity of mind. She never really goes out to buy her own alcohol, though she has been given gifts from time to time that she keep at home. She finds the taste of pure alcohol particularly unpleasant so almost anything she drinks is heavily masked if she can help it.
Drugs: Nothing recreational. As with alcohol she enjoys clarity of mind so the mind altering properties aren’t really appealing. Plus she doesn’t really need the risks that come with use. She might be convinced but it’s not something she’d seek out alone.
Mount Issuance: No, not personally. Though she can borrow a chocobo form her families company if she needs one. She’s a trained rider but she finds she enjoys travel by foot if she not in any kind of rush. So more often then not she travels by foot or ship.
Been Arrested: No
Tagged by: @thefreelanceangel and @gatheredfates
Tagging: No one. Because I took like two months to do this and I still have to do Nexa. Still if you haven't done one then do it and tag me so I can look at it.

Dating a Jacket, Part 1
The Eighteenth-Century Assumption
Part 2 here
Sometimes you come across a piece of clothing and the date just seems a little too ambiguous. That was the case with this jacket, number 1981.314.2, held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which is said to be from the 2nd quarter of the 18th century. The good people at the Costume Institute within the Met were kind enough to take detailed photos of the jacket for me, including details of construction. These images were invaluable in allowing me to create my own version, but have also given me some questions about their chosen date. I am not allowed to share the images they took for me without express permission, so if necessary I will include photos from my own jacket.
First, let us remind ourselves of what the jacket looks like:
Left: jacket, Italian, 1981.314.2. Dated 2nd quarter 18th c. Metropolitan Museum of Art. Right: my own recreation of the same jacket.
The Met gives the original jacket a moderately wide date range of 2nd quarter of the 18th century, so between 1725 and 1750. And I can see what influenced them to make that decision. At first glance, the overall shape has strong similarities with the examples below of wide-necked riding jackets.
Left: Casaquin, textile 1710-1720, garment 1720-1730. Right: Casaquin, c. 1730-1740. Both from Palais Galliera
Left: Agnieszka Emercjanna Pociej ascribed to Ádám Mányoki, before 1722. Right: Lucy Pelham-Holles by Godfrey Kneller, 1722.
Left: Sophie Marie von Voss by Antoine Pesne, 1746-1751. Right: Maria-Antonia von Fürstenberg by Franz Josef Weiss, 1758.
Please note, however, that regional fashion changes do exist and none of the examples are Italian. I could not find any images of similar jackets from Italy. If anyone does have images of riding habits/jackets from Italy in the first half of the 18th century, I'd love to see them! However, these images do show at least a moderate geographic distribution of this trend: France, Germany (Prussia and Swabia), England, and Poland. All of the examples feature a wider neckline than the close-to-the-neck style found in men's coats and in some other women's riding jackets, and also feature metallic trim embellishing the front and cuffs. So far, so good, right? Well--let's dig deeper.
First, what do I mean by "riding jacket?" I am using the phrase to denote these and other women’s jackets from the 17th and 18th century that are inspired by menswear and originally used for the purpose of riding and hunting. Some of you may be more familiar with the term "riding habit" in which the jacket is worn with a matching petticoat and maybe a waistcoat to create a complete outfit.
Many of these jackets have trends directly borrowed from menswear like pockets and button-fronts, and fasten at the center front without a stomacher. However, as riding jackets and riding habits became an acceptable part of fashionable dress, some of these characteristics may have been adapted, or vanished almost entirely, as is the case with the two French casaquins seen above. These jackets represent the way that practical garments adapted to fashionable tastes. You can see Mme Gaspard de Peleran wearing a very similar jacket in this sketch by Liotard–its equestrian nature is denoted by the long riding whip she holds in her hand.
Madame Gaspard de Péleran by Jean-Etienne Liotard, est 1738-1742 (my estimate is based on Liotard's residence in Turkey from 1738 to 1742, where the subject's husband was French Consul in Smyrna)
So where do my doubts about the Met's jacket come from? Well, it's mainly the construction. When we look at extant riding jackets, however, the vast majority of the (admittedly few) originals have front waist seams, something absent from my own. The brocade casaquin above? waist seam. The pink casaquin? can't say, hidden by lace, could be either. This 1730-1750 riding jacket from the Snowshill Wade Costume collection was even patterned in Janet Arnold's Patterns of Fashion Volume 1, pp 24-25, so you can really see the waist seam:
Whether plain or ornate, you'll probably find a waist seam!
Left: Riding Jacket, 1740s, John Bright Collection. Right: Riding Coat, 1750-1759, V&A Museum.
I found exactly one riding jacket which clearly does not have a front waist seam, and it's from very early in the period:
Jacket, 1710-1725, Palais Galliera.
If we look at paintings, we do find a few more examples that seemingly don't have a waist seam. Some of these might be artistic license or simply the artist not wanting to paint every single seam, but I'm inclined to believe at least some of them, like this painting by Nicholas Lancret:
Picnic After the Hunt (detail) by Nicolas Lancret, 1735-1740, National Gallery of Art.
Why do I trust it? The waist wrinkles. Ask me how I know...
Okay, so, a waist seam of lack thereof isn't proof one or the other about dating. But there are other oddities of construction as well. For instance, looking at this picture of my own jacket, do you see the pocket? These pockets have no flap and are cut straight across, whereas every other example I've shown so far has a pocket flap. This is much more in keeping with men's coats from the same period:
Left: Coat, British, 1720s, Met Costume Institute. Right: Coat, German, 1720s-1730s, LACMA.
Also, where are the rest of the buttons? The jacket held by the Met has 100 buttons total--33 along the front, 8 along each pocket, and 17 along the side and back vents. These men's coats, the most button-heavy of all the examples shown here, have buttons along the fronts, below the pocket flaps, and along the top cuffs, but none running along the vents:
In addition, the Met jacket has large contrasting cuffs, which does not seem to be as much an element of jackets from the 2nd quarter of the 18th century, unless it matched a waistcoat.
Bottom Left: Anna Katarzyna Orzelska by Louis de Silvestre, c.1730. (red waistcoat matching cuffs is just visible at front opening below lace). Bottom Right: Coat, c. 1735, National Museums Scotland.
None of these cuffs have a heavy trim around the edge though, like the pleated pink ribbon and silver braid on the Met's jacket. It is possible that the cuffs and trim are a later addition, but just comparing the braid on the cuffs to the braid on the rest of the jacket, they appear to be the same 4-strand silver metallic braid.
While this does not rule out the possibility that they were an addition made at a different time, it does make it, in my opinion, most likely that the cuffs are contemporary to the rest of the jacket. In addition, most cuffs of 1725-1750 jackets and coats are cut separately to the sleeve and then attached, whereas the cuffs of my jacket are cut in one with the sleeve and folded back.
So where does that leave us? Well, the Met appears to be correct in noticing that wide-necked riding jackets are largely a phenomenon of the early-to-mid 18th century. The large turned-back cuffs and lack of a waist seam would probably push this earlier in their proposed date range, closer to the 1720s than the 1750s. In my next post, however, I will introduce another possibility--what if the jacket is earlier? Maybe even much earlier?

what are your favourite toxic yuri rpf ships
after some careful research i have decided on the following
inka grings/martina voss/linda bresonik - discussed them before but their lore is literally so crazy and the fact that it's still ongoing makes it even better
aitana bonmati/alexia putellas - this is mostly just based on rumours that aitana and alexia (allegedly!) didn't get along well (i remember hearing that aitana apparently skipped alexia's ballon d'or ceremony or something along those lines but i'm not sure, plus the social media stuff) although i think they have a better relationship right now
rebeca andrade/simone biles - this isn't really that toxic and honestly, it's very clear they really love and respect each other irl but I have read some good fic where they have more of a rivalry type relationship and hate each other so you're just going to have to open up your third eye for this one
i'm not that familiar with wnba but maybe angel reese/caitlin clark? I feel like they're the two female athletes that have the most high profile rivalry at the moment
maria sharapova/serena williams - this is the pinnacle of female sports rivalry to me and honestly nothing in the current wta even comes close (i think iga and aryna may have this rivalry in the future but i think both iga and aryna will never be as outspoken as serena and maria at press conferences). also i love how serena compared her and maria's relationship to 'those guys from challengers' which probably has... implications that she probably didn't consider lmao
anyway that's just my opinion so let me know if you agree or disagree

Love your blog and your work so much. Which books would you recommend for studying War in general? And how to start studying History? I mean, which books should I search for.
look, y'all, I'm not dead; I am simply working on another degree and teaching full-time (and coaching!! I am a coach!!) so I am no longer so active as I am reading and writing all the time.
anyway, to answer your question anon: what are you interested in?
If you don't know the answer to that question, go directly to a library and start looking. Or open up Wikipedia and do a deep dive. You gotta find your interest and then follow the line down to your niche.
I found quickly that I was not as interested in the maps and movements of troops as I was in the actual people. Can I explain, in detail, the events leading up to the Battle of Midway like a military textbook? Yes, but I'm more interested in individual perspectives of that event. Generals and big moves are exciting and crucial to study, but I am more interested in reading memoirs or books on individuals who were cogs in the machine. History is human.
But, if you're interested in the 20th century (and mainly WWII because that's my bread and butter) here are some books I've been able to read recently or reread:
All The Frequent Troubles of Our Days, Rebecca Donner
Tennozan: The Battle of Okinawa and the Atomic Bomb, George Feifer
Black Edelweiss: A Memoir of Combat and Conscience by a Soldier of the Waffen-SS, Johanna Voss
Hitler's Furies: German Women in the Killing Fields, Wendy Lower
Rape of Nanking, Iris Chang
The Forgotten Soldier, Guy Sager
The Origins of Totalitarianism, Hannah Arendt
Brave Men, Ernie Pyle
Parachute Infantry, David K. Webster
The Unwomanly Face of War: An Oral History of Women in World War II, Svetlana Alexievich
Band of Brothers, Stephen E. Ambrose
Easy Company Soldier, Don Malarkey
Ordinary Men, Christopher R. Browning
The Light of Days, Judy Batalion
Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption, Laura Hillenbrand
All Quiet on the Western Front: A Novel, Erich Maria Remarque
Sergeant York: His Own Life Story and War Diary, Alvin York
The Nazis Next Door: How America Became a Safe Haven for Hitler’s Men, Eric Lichtblau
Donner's book was the most recent, and I can't recommend it enough. She is the great-niece of one of the Red Orchestra founders and does a great job weaving a narrative that has been disjointed for such a time with a human touch an ordinary researcher probably would have never found. I knew where the story ended; there are few, if any, happy endings in wartime, but I had to finish it. It's stuck with me.
Find something like that, a piece of history you can carry with you, and you'll know when you've found your niche. You won't stop then.

Emil Schäfer - Part 1
Family Carl Maria Emil Schäfer was born on 17 December 1891. Named after his father, he went by the name Emil. He had two younger sisters. His father was a fabric manufacturer; two things Emil had in common with his flying comrade Werner Voss whose father had the same profession and also was from the city of Krefeld in western Germany. They also went to the same school, not at the same times though as Werner was six years younger.
Military service and Work After his graduation in 1911 Schäfer had to do compulsory military service but was able to join the Einjährigen-Programm, so he only had to do it for one year instead of the standart two years. He chose to serve with the Hannoversches Jäger-Battailon Nr. 10 (Infantry) in Goslar. After that, Schäfer was destined to join his father's company and become a merchant. For that he did internships with some of his father´s business colleagues. He had the opportunity to go to London and then to Paris, making him fluent in English and French. Originally he had planned to stay in France for some years, but the year was 1914 so destiny had other plans for him. His father came to Paris to bring him back to Germany, eventhough the imminent threat of war wasn´t yet taken seriously from neither the Schäfers nor their French colleagues: “We joked about our departure, drank to seeing each other again soon, and separated as the best of friends”.
War time service 1914 - 1915 Schäfer, in the rank of Oberjäger, tried to rejoin his old regiment, but was ordered to Westfälisches Jägerbataillon Nr. 7. His first mission was the occupation of Liège, Belgium after its capture the days before. His task was to secure the train station and the bridges around the city. But Schäfer was eager for a more active role in the war: “Hopefully we'll get to the enemy soon. I don't like the police service anymore”. His wish soon came true, and on September 1st his unit is deployed for the storming of Maubeuge. After several days of shelling the fort, they managed to take it. 52,000 men on the French side were captured by 18,000 German troops. After that they were supposed to march on Paris but another unit needed help and after a march of almost 100 km in two days they managed to prevent an enemy breakthrough of the lines.
On September 26, 1914, the course of the war changed for Emil Schäfer when he was shot in the leg while taking the town of Chivry. He had to spend almost 7 months in hospitals and in rehab before he could walk again. The result of the injury was a shortened left leg, which made it difficult for him to walk long distances. He returned to his unit in April 1915 which was still in the same area where he last left them; the city taken and the soldiers deep in the trenches. There he stayed until the end of 1915. He had started to get bored and was also struggling with his injury; his leg was healed, but he found it difficult to walk and stand for long periods of time.
Pilot In January 1916 Schäfer started his pilot training in Köslin. After successful graduation he was sent to Russia in July to join Staffel 8 of Kampfgeschwader 2. His main task was to attack Russian positions with bombs and machine gun fire. “We start twice or three times a day. Occasionally tethered balloons are charred and Russian planes shot down.”
Emil wrote extensively to his parents, describing a day in the life of a pilot: “At 4:45 in the morning my orderly appears and throws me out of bed, half an hour later I appear in my oldest and dirtiest outfit in the dining car, where the gentlemen from squadron 8 and 9 gradually arrive. Coffee, milk, sugar, bread and occasionally a little butter is delivered. Almost everyone still has a pot of jelly, jam, butter or sausage. This first breakfast is very hearty and plentiful, because if you are unlucky, it must be enough for the whole day. Then we go to the airport. When we arrive, the planes are ready. I walk around my good old machine, checking a turnbuckle here and there, then I get attracted. Schubert helps me into my flight pants, buttons, buckles, zips up the various fasteners, has crash aids, goggles and gloves ready. The squadron leader gathers the six crews around him and issues the order. My observer and I now go back to our plane. The plane is started, we take off. Six minutes after the start we are almost 1000 meters high. We're over the city on time, I'm heading straight for the train station and the bombs are already falling. 600 kilograms of the most powerful explosive ammunition poured over the buildings and facilities. Then we go home. The square is lively now. The fitters take over the machines. The observers gather with the squadron leader and report; the pilots still have work to do on the machines, are talking to the fitters, the foreman, and to each other. When everything is done, it's off to the cars and home to the residential train, where everything is discussed again in detail over the second, also very thorough, breakfast.”
In January 1917 Kampfgeschwader 2 was sent to the Western Front. Schäfer was now part of a Jagdstaffel (fighter squadron), flying single seater fighter planes. His first victory almost cost him his life, having to crash land after shooting down a French flyer. Now that he had a taste for being a real fighter pilot, he turned to a former comrade he met in Russia: Manfred von Richthofen, who had recently taken over the leadership of his own Jadgstaffel. In mid-February, Schäfer got the okay to switch to Jasta 11.

Veronika Voss aka Die Sehnsucht der Veronika Voss https://tinyurl.com/29s8y3ep By a stretch the best of Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s so-called BRD Trilogy, Veronika Voss stands out against The Marriage of Maria Braun and Lola because Fassbinder had the great good sense to co-opt Billy Wilder’s brilliant Sunset Boulevar...
