@dancers and Russian/English learners
If you are an English speaker looking to learn some Russian OR a Russian speaker looking to learn some English and/or you’re into ballet, dance, or fitness, I recommend checking out Maria Khoreva on Youtube! She’s a ballerina (soloist w the Mariinsky theatre) who does tutorial/workout videos, and she usually explains everything in both Russian and English.
She has everything from simple cardio to technique tips to actual variation tutorials. As a dancer I’ve found her extremely helpful, and I think its rly valuable that she provides explanations in both languages.
#disclaimer: I don't do pointe so I haven't seen those vids#but her basic barre vids are great#and I love her turnout and flexibility routines#and especially the ballet arms one#arms r a struggle lol#dance#ballet#fitness#танцы#балет#балерина#фитнес#ballerina#learn russian#learn english#russian#english#dancer#maria khoreva#Мария хорева

Maria Khoreva (Mariinsky Ballet)

Ballet Ruso

Ask Responses: Vaganova
Hi melmoth! Happy new year in advance :D anyway, regarding recent Vaganova graduates /students ie Ksenia Zhiganshina, Eleonara Sevenard, Alena kovaleva and Maria Khoreva, who do you think will be the primas of the future generation?
It’s really hard to tell... Unfortunately, talent and hard work are not always enough for a dancer to succeed and rise through the ranks. A lot depends on luck and the priorities of the artistic director of whichever company the graduates end up at. Tsiskaridze recently said that he has already seen very talented graduates (of his time: 2013 - 2017) underestimated, misused or altogether crushed.
In the case of Kovaleva, Vaziev seems to be taking the same approach he had with Somova years ago at the Mariinsky. I think he’s grooming her to become a prima. Sevenard also has a lot of support, so we’ll have to wait and see. I think Khoreva has what it takes to get to the top. Plus, she’s Professor Kovaleva’s student and, from what I’ve heard, Kovaleva looks after her own and helps them outside of the academy. I hope to see Maria as a Mariinsky prima one day. But only time will tell.
Hi. I love reading your blog! I know you've commented on Kristina Spiridonova before, but I just want to express again that I think she is one of the more under-rated students at the school. I've been a balletomane for decades and trained as well....I can see that she is an excellent performer and a character dancer par excellence. Even her exercises are dancing rather than just technique. Have you heard anything recent about her? I hope her talent is seen and recognized even more in the future.
I’m afraid I haven’t heard anything about her in a long time. She’s still at VBA and I think she participates in major performances as a corps dancer but that’s about it.
Hi melmoth! Do you know if the "Maria Khoreva" mentioned in some YouTube rhythmic gymnastics' videos such as "Хорева Мария 2000 г.р. Без предмета 2006 г." or "Алые паруса 2010 (Маша Хорева бп.)" etc. is the same vba Masha Khoreva? If so,now I understand where her amazing extensions and feet come from! Moreover,I just wanted to say that I'm so happy for Masha's latest spotlight, she's a rising star and I hope she will become a Bolshoi or Mariinsky prima ballerina because that's what she deserves!
It’s impossible to tell from the videos if it is her, but Maria did take rhythmic gymnastics before she got into VBA.
Do you know if Yana Cherepanova and Olya Morgulets are in the same class?
I think Olga is a year below Yana.

Ask Responses - Vaganova
Hi Melmoth, Thank you for all that you do and all the information you provide. You have a great blog. I have kind of a big ask for you. If/when you have time could you provide a rough translation of Maria Khoreva's speech at the commencement of this VBA school year? It is available (with other parts of the ceremony) under Leo Petit's Youtube channel "АРБ!
youtube
I’ll try my best but I have trouble hearing her at some points in the video.
“Good afternoon dear teachers, academy staff, first year student, class of 2018 and everyone in between - parents, family and friends. On behalf of the graduating class, I would like to wish you a happy first, new or final year within the walls of Vaganova Ballet Academy. There is so much to say and so little time to say it but I want to do three important things.
First of all, I’d like to thank our teachers. Everything you’ve done for us during our time here and continue to do every day year in, year out is so incredibly motivating. It inspires us to strive for new achievements and turns us into better versions of ourselves. We will carry our gratitude in our hearts forever. Thank you so much.
The second thing I’d like to do is to address the first-years. I remember myself at that age, so inept, my head filled with such strange notions about what ballet is.... [can’t make this out]. You will make mistakes but you must never give up. Health and avoiding injuries is very important but it’s even more crucial to be brave and to not be afraid to make mistakes. Willpower and diligence always win the day.
My third and final point: we are neither enemies not rivals. There is room for everyone. Ballet is a wonderful career.... [can’t make this out] ...our success depends on us alone. The ballet world is big but there is only one Academy of Russian Ballet and there aren’t that many of us here, so let us be friends. Let us support and help each other and then the success of our colleague will be our own. We are studying at a unique place... we are students of Vaganova Ballet Academy... [can’t make out the end of her speech].”
Very weird question: can Vba students wear make up? Or do they have strict rules about make-up and hairstyle? It's because some of the girls in the exam's videos looked like they wore make-up and some others didn't. I just want to find out if Vaganova has pretty strict rules related even to personal "areas" and style. Thank you!
I’m not aware of any actual rules about makeup at VBA but I think students would be discouraged from wearing it. It’s common sense, really. Wearing makeup while exercising destroys your skin.
Is Maria Bulanova studying a year ahead? I remember seeing somewhere that she was 15 during the Vaganova Prix, which means that she is probably a year younger than her 7th year classmates who are supposed to be 16/17, is that correct? Doesn't that mean she's very talented?
Masha is definitely very talented but she’s not much younger than her classmates. She’s 16 and most of the girls in her class are 16/17.
Not a question, but Savelieva recently posted a short clip of her performance as Moon Goddess in Awakening of Flora on her Instagram stories, and it appears she is performing with much more confidence, and much less rigidity, than she has previously. I really hope this year we see her come out of her shell and deliver in performances the kind of beautiful musicality she has displayed in exams. She could really be a star in her graduating year.
Ditto.
What year did Karina Soldatova graduate from VBA?
2015.

The classical qualities of Swan Lakelie in the precise structural forms,in the strict classical school and in the traditional split of classical and character dance. Its psychology liesin the mysterious theme of duplicity and the well-developed theme of fate and destiny. Nevertheless, when it appeared in 1877 there was no instant acclaim for Swan Lake. The production stagedat the Bolshoi Theatre by Vaclav Reisinger was “one of many”, extremely traditional and in no way innovative. The famous “Russian soul” was absent in it, and neither was there the eternal symbol of Russian spiritualityin the image of the Swan. And Tchaikovsky’s music, in turns mournfully aching, festively triumphant andmenacingly fatal, was not regarded as a masterpiece for a long time to come. Initially, Pyotr Ilyich’s opus wasreceived in a very restrained manner: people felt that the ballet was “poor in melodies” and the music“the weakest point of all.” The spirituality in the rst production was hard to nd: much was hidden by the corpsde ballet which rigorously waved their cardboard wings at the premiere – today one could only imagine sucha thing in a parody of the ballet! And only the name of Polina Karpakova, who went down in history as the rstperformer of the role of Odette (the name of the performer of the role of Odile was covered by three stars onthe playbill), tells us that the history of the ballet did not begin in St Petersburg. But it was in the city on the River Neva that the White Swan “built its nest.” Following a concert in memoryof the composer at the Mariinsky Theatre in 1895, when Lev Ivanov showed a “swan scene” – gentle, tender andtouching – Marius Petipa, the director of the ballet company in St Petersburg, nally resolved to stageTchaikovsky’s debut in the dance genre at the Imperial theatre. The premiere took place one year later, in 1896. The conductor and composer Riccardo Drigo undertook a very tactical musical revision of the score – it is hisversion of the music for Swan Lakethat most choreographers follow. The Frenchman Petipa and the RussianIvanov (the choreographers), the Italian Drigo (conductor and author of this version of the music) and PierinaLegnani as Odette-Odile – these are the creators of the famous myth of Swan Lake. In the more than century-long existence of Swan Lake at the Mariinsky Theatre, the production has been radicallyaltered on just three occasions, which, you must agree, is very little for a ballet that is over a hundred years old. The most radical, however strange it may seem, was by a woman – Agrippina Yakovlevna Vaganova, the famedteacher and excellent soloist (in Swan Lake, apropos, she did not particularly stand out at all). She attemptedto simplify the mysticism of the libretto and the music, presenting the story of the swan-maiden as the sickhallucinations of an erudite youth, mercilessly killing off the protagonists with no right to resurrectionin the nale (in the 1896 production Odette and Siegfried, once dead, were reunited in the afterlife). All that remains of Vaganova in the current production, however, is the “swan-like” turns of the arms and the dancemeeting of Odette and Siegfried: Agrippina Yakovlevna, dissatised with the fussy pantomime nature of thisscene, created highly imagistic choreography. Ten years later Fyodor Lopukhov, another classic of Soviet ballet, resolved to let the male protagonist live and moreover restored Odette’s human image – in the nale she became a woman. But this production too, memorable for von Rothbart’s excellent variation, remained in the theatre’srepertoire for just ve years before it was replaced by the version of Konstantin Sergeyev, one of the nestSiegfrieds of all time anywhere, in which the dancer and choreographer, true to classical dance, combinedthe very best that had been created for Swan Lake in the course of half a century. Today, too, this production isconsidered the epitome of classical dance imagery. It was this version recorded on lm that documents the lyricaldance of Galina Ulanova, the virtuoso sparkle of Natalia Dudinskaya, the classical perfection of Gabriela Komlevaand the mutinous passion of Galina Mezentseva.
