TERRIFIER 3 (2024)
😿Rat smashed/squashed
It took them three (3) movies to make a decent film but hey, Terrifier 3 is actually alright to watch if you enjoy a slasher where folks who don’t necessarily deserve it get tortured. Creative weapons/kills and overall Sienna being in this again made for a memorable character plus I like what they do with her character. They even expound on the magic more in this one and it makes the way they explained the lore in Terrifier 2 look like a sick joke.
⭐⭐⭐
(Trigger Warning Suicide (?), genital mutilation, PTSD)
Our movie begins with Art the Clown, I mean, Santa, breaking into a normal family's home and loving them to bits and pieces… Yeah, let’s go with that. Five (5) years earlier though, Art's biggest fan gives birth to his head and kills herself after breaking out of asylum. Sienna is back but her brother is nowhere to be seen. I guess we just forgot about him from the second movie after Art started to cannibalize his legs but that seems like a small detail to kick someone out of a sequel for. Sienna is having PTSD hallucinations about the friends she lost in the previous film. This visitation is actually very well done and haunting as Sienna blames herself for her friend's early and gruesome demise. And also the brother is in this movie, he’s just in college and no one said anything about him until nearly 40 minutes into the film. Seriously. I wish I were joking.
Sienna is having a hard time, what with the dead parents and all the dead friends and some fangirl at her brother's college who wants to interview her about being a survivor of the Miles County Clown (AKA Art the Clown). She enjoys being at her Aunt's house with her cousin Gabbie but is still suspicious about Art. She even thinks she sees him at the mall dressed as Santa… The bar scene was particularly creative and gruesome though Art does bring out his Gun again and we all know I really didn’t enjoy that from the first movie. It just isn’t like a demon who enjoys torment to use a gun, you know? Either way we move from the unoriginal gun to the canister of liquid nitrogen and that is a big improvement. I had to pause the movie after that scene because my body hurt for the victim! From here Art goes to the mall with his bomb and I’m unsure how I feel about all the violence against children. I know it is fake but kids are innocent so it is hard for me to find any enjoyment in his bombastic present. We already had to see the boy chopped up at the top of the film so this is just adding salt (and bleach) to the wound.
Sienna figures out it was in fact Art that she saw at the mall after she sees the news about the explosion but it seems too late for her brother and Uncle who are at the college when Art is going through a creative phase with a chainsaw. By the time Sienna wakes up, Victoria Heyes, the girl who killed herself in the beginning of the movie, is in her kitchen, possessed by the demon of the Little Girl from Terrifier 2, and ready for blood. Sienna and her aunt are bound and forced to look at her dead uncle and the skull of what is said to be Gabbie. Her aunt is very gruesomely murdered with a glass pipe and some rats before we find out the skull belongs to Jonathan the brother and Gabbie is brought out. Turns out Art and Demon Victoria are trying to break Sienna so the demon in Victoria can go into Sienna… Because Sienna has been selected by the angels to stop Art even though she is so woefully underprepared for this asshole.
Through some trickery the girls are able to get the sword, kill Victoria, and half kill Art, but there is too much money in that man so he cannot die, so he escapes through a window while Gabbie is slipping into the void. The ending is a little lame, I don’t see how Gabbie can just kind of go off into a mystery dimension while Art just rides a bus (honk honk). I mean, really it was very anticlimactic after that huge fight. We didn’t even have Jonathan there to be adorable! Also still unsure how I feel about the reveal that Jonathan was dead? Not sure I would want to see that adorable kid get chopped up but also not sure I believe the double fake? Sort of wish they had an after credit scene of what Art did to him to get his head in the cage, it felt like we all missed a big important scene. But overall this ending is just a big set up for yet another sequel and at what cost to the integrity of the story?

Katie Kampenfelt and Margaret Spooner (Ask Me Anything)
The line isn't in the movie, but in the book, Katie complains that the worst part about being a nanny for "organic health nut" Margaret is having to wash her son's "uncircumcised wiener" whenever she gives him a bath.

I wanted to edit an 18th century portrait to suit Magrat because I feel like on the rare occasion that she does wear a witch hat, it would be a particular style of 18th century hat*. Like the much more popular bergèr, they featured a wide brim, but instead of a small incredibly low crown, they had a slightly wider crown that formed a low cone. I thought that a 1790s portrait would work best as a base, because of the changing fashionable dress and some of the hairstyles seem to fit the descriptions given in the books (not that this is the best example, but it was good enough for my purposes). I started with Walter Robinson’s ca. 1795 portrait of Mrs. Gabriel Manigault (Maragret Izard) and added from there. Her necklace would hold a silver pendant, and while in the Roundworld this pendant would often be a cross, it’s anyone’s guess as to what Magrat’s would be. Perhaps the silver ram skull that the Fool got for her in Ankh-Morpork?
*I would love to make one of these hats because they’re cool, but I can’t find any information about them unless it appears in a print making fun of Quakers or the Welsh, and in there are definitely images where this is not the case, and they seem to have been an alternative to the much more popular bergère, and worn, like the bergère, by women of various classes.

July 13th 1900 saw the birth of Elizabeth “Bessie” Watson in Edinburgh.
Born just off the Grassmarket, at 11 The Vennel to Agnes Newton and Horatio Watson, Bessie did not take long to make her mark in the world, at the tender age of 9 she combined her two greatest loves: bagpiping and woman’s suffrage, the latter makes her arguably the youngest in Scotland, if not the world.
When she turned seven, Bessie’s aunt Margaret contracted tuberculosis – an incident which would change the youngster’s life forever. Margaret lived with the family, and Bessie’s parents, worried that she might fall ill to the contagious disease, encouraged her to take up the bagpipes in a bid to strengthen her weak lungs. Her first set of pipes was specially-produced according to her diminutive stature as she was too small to properly inflate an adult-sized bag. The half-sized set of pipes was purchased from Robertson’s pipe makers at 58 Grove Street. “I hurried home from school and carried it, in a brown paper parcel down to my (music) teacher”, Bessie recalled. As one of the very few female bagpipe players in the world at that time – not to mention one of the youngest – Bessie took to her new instrument with great enthusiasm.
Bessie had more than her bag pipe playing to make her worthy of a post here, while walking with her mother through the streets of Edinburgh, Scotland, Bessie stopped to look at the window of the Women’s Social and Political Union office. Bessie became excited about the idea of women receiving the right to vote, even though she wouldn’t be able to vote for many years.
Bessie realized that her talents could help promote votes for women. She would run from school each day to play her bagpipes outside of the Calton Jail in Edinburgh for fellow suffragettes in prison.
At the first suffrage pageant she performed at, she wore a sash with the words “Votes for Women” as she performed with her bagpipes. At the height of the suffragette movement, Bessie was playing at major demonstrations and parades for the Women’s Social and Political Union, including the famous procession through Edinburgh on 9th October 1909. On that day a large crowd watched as hundreds of banner-laden ladies, wearing the suffragist colours of purple, white and green, marched down Princes Street before congregating at Waverley Market for a rally led by Emmeline Pankhurst. Watson rode on a float beside a woman dressed as Isabella Duff, Countess of Buchan in her cage! Isabella is famed for crowning Robert the Bruce at Scone when he seized the Scottish crown, she was later captured with the Bruce family and held prisoner in a cage in the open air at Berwick for four years.
Back to oor Bessie, who just a ten year-old she travelled to London to play her bagpipes in a women’s march on June 17th, 1911. J ust a few weeks later, for George’s state visit to Edinburgh, Bessie, leading the 2nd Edinburgh Company of the Girl Guides, received recognition from the king himself as she raised her salute. Having secured regal acknowledgement in time for her 11th birthday, Scotland’s youngest female piper continued in her quest to support women’s rights, accompanying inmates bound for Holloway Prison to Waverley Station and playing the pipes as their trains departed.
For the part she played in Edinburgh’s historic women’s rights pageant of 1909, young Bessie received a special gift from one very prominent individual. Christabel Pankhurst (daughter of Emmeline) came to Edinburgh to address a meeting at the King’s Theatre and Bessie was invited to attend. During the evening she was presented with a brooch representing Queen Boadicea (Boudica) in her chariot, as a token of gratitude for her help in the pageant.
During WWI, Bessie was just a teenager and used her talents to make a difference in other ways. She began helping the Scots Guard to recruit army volunteers by playing her bagpipes
In 1926 Bessie moved with her parents to a new house on Clark Road, Trinity where she would remain for the rest of her days. Following her marriage to electrical contractor John Somerville at the end of the Second World War, Bessie devoted her life to teaching music and foreign languages. Former neighbours recall that, even into her late eighties, Bessie continued to play her bagpipes at 11am every morning. It was something she had always done.
Bessie died in 1992, two and a half weeks short of her 92nd birthday. Over the course of her long life she had experienced almost a century of social progression and upheaval, and had played her part in changing the world for the better.
A pictorial tribute was unveiled at The Vennel in Edinburgh on August 1st 2019 in memory of Bessie, the University of Edinburgh also have a lecture room named in her honour.

everything i read in november
we're almost at the end of the year and i'm actually shocked by how many books i've managed to get through, even while doing a master's! i've really enjoyed doing these reviews so you guys are stuck with them for the forseeable, i'm afraid lol
Oryx and Crake by Margaret Atwood
One of my New Year's Resolutions for 2024 was to engage more deeply with the books I read, and writing these reviews have been a big part of that. Over the year I've often felt that I'm being too harsh on some of the books, like maybe I'm just too dumb to appreciate ambiguous plots and meanings. Then I read Oryx and Crake and I realised no, actually, I was right to expect better from the books I read, because better is out there.
This novel is so perfectly plotted and written - it walks the 'show, don't tell' line brilliantly, not explaining every little detail nor leaving so much unexplained that the whole thing seems pointless. It was really fantastic, and I would recommend it over any of the similar books I've read this year; I think the obvious comparison is The Wall by Marlen Haushofer (reviewed here) - this is everything I wanted from that book and didn't get. I'll definitely be reading more Atwood next year!
Bridget Jones's Diary by Helen Fielding
This was so absolutely brilliant - genuinely made me laugh out loud at points, and tear up at others. I would highly recommend for anyone who likes the film, they have the same vibe but the book is better! I don't usually read romance but I am thinking of branching out into some more classic romances like this in the future.
The Baudelaire Fractal by Lisa Robertson
I really enjoyed this - I don't think it'll be for everyone, but it was definitely for me. It follows a woman reflecting on her youth in Paris, which has sort of melded in her mind with the life of the poet Charles Baudelaire. It's part-Baudelaire biography, part-young girl trying to find herself, part-musing on the role of women in art and poetry, especially in the bohemian group that Baudelaire was a part of. It reads at times almost like a philosophy essay, and it has a full index of books and artworks referenced (we love to see it).
I found it really thought provoking, especially the frequent discussions of Baudelaire's mistress/muse, Jeanne Duval. She was a huge part of his personal and business life (she put him in touch with lots of clients and fellow creatives) but was essentially excluded from his intellectual life because of her gender (and probably also her race and class). The narrator, as a woman who also kind of believes herself to be the reincarnation of Baudelaire, poses a really interesting viewpoint of Duval and the role of muse, and there's a real sense of what women have achieved in the modern day by even being allowed to enter creative spaces in their own right and not as a man's muse.
It was a difficult read at times (I had to look a lot of stuff up), but I like to be challenged (and, as my mum said, after Bridget Jones it was probably a good thing to be challenged).
Varanasi by Jae Watson
I've got to be honest, this book was pretty terrible. I bought it in a charity shop because the premise intrigued me; a woman goes through a terrible break-up and travels to India to 'find herself', but is stranded in Varanasi when her travelling companion is found dead. The main part of the plot was actually rounded out in a pretty satisfactory way, but that's about all I can say for it. It was very badly written, both the dialogue and the descriptive writing, and it felt weirdly preachy at times. When I read the author's bio and found she has a degree in theology, it all started to make sense. Oh well. They can't all be Bridget Jones's Diary.
The Tatami Galaxy by Tomihiko Morimi
I thought this was fun! It follows a student through four parallel versions of his life, which differ by the club he chose to join in his first week at university. In each universe he wishes he had chosen differently, so his life wouldn't be so awful - the book is written in a very melodramatic and overly descriptive way that I really enjoyed. The irony is that despite his choices, his life ends up pretty much the same in each case - he meets the same people, gets mixed up in the same events, and ends up pretty happy. I found this oddly comforting, and kind of true to that stage of life. Really, whatever kinds of choices you make at university matter less than what kind of person you are, and you'll probably be ok in the end. It had lots of really funny moments and I found myself really compelled by all the characters. Would recommend for anyone looking for something a bit different!
The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson
This was so so good!! I was really pulled into the mystery and I cared about all the characters, which I think is the sweet spot for thrillers. It was a lot darker than I was expecting, especially Lisbeth's storyline, but I think it was handled really well. Like Oryx and Crake, it was very well plotted and paced, which shows up some other thrillers I've read recently. I can see why it was such a huge bestseller/cultural moment, it 100% lives up to the hype. I'll definitely be reading the other two books in the series!
Currently Reading + On My Radar
I'm currently reading Behind the Scenes at the Museum by Kate Atkinson, which is absolutely fantastic. The only one of her books I've read before is When Will There Be Good News?, which is a thriller, so I was expecting Behind the Scenes to be a thriller too, but it's more of a literary novel, which I'm actually really enjoying! Full review next month but one thing I'm especially loving is that it's set in York, where I'm from! Very fun to read a historical novel set in a place you know well. I don't really have any books I'm 100% planning on reading next month, apart from a Christmas-themed mystery novella I bought. I also might re-read Wuthering Heights - I read it for the first time when I was pretty young and I honestly don't remember it too well.
As always, if you read this far then please reply and tell me a book you've enjoyed recently, or maybe one you hated (spill the tea) or maybe just one you're looking forward to reading! Ily <3
#another book review post yayyyy#these have been so fun i don't even care if no-one reads them#pinkie reads#🧃
