December Birchbox Review
Birchbox is the original beauty subscription box. I’ve been subscribed to Birchbox for about 6 years now and it is available for $10 per month or $110 per year (basically one free box). Birchbox sends 5-7 sample sized products monthly. Keep reading to see what I received in my December box.

My one and only Birchbox. I suspected I wouldn’t be too happy with it from what I’d seen on YouTube, but I tried it anyway because I am searching for under $20 subscription boxes to make me happy (and I’ve heard worse things about Allure, so, no not trying it). While I don’t mind some beauty products, I’m mostly turning into a makeup geek, thus Birchbox isn’t the fit for me. Still, here it is. A couple of the products ended up being keepers, but most of them have landed in my ProjectBeautyShare.org box that will be shipping out the end of next month.
Before I get to my reviews of these products, one other box failed, but it did the flailing and failing: Beauty Box 5. They charged the $12 despite not having consistently shipped boxes since July. Then they canceled the subscription but didn’t return my money. So, yea, avoid that one.
On to products and reviews!
Marcelle CC Cream Golden Glow SPF 35 :: On the plus side, it's light for something with a sunscreen and it did even out my complexion a little. However, it didn't hide my imperfections, give my skin a soft texture or feel hydrating at all (my NYX Hydra Touch Primer feels better), or minimize lines etc. And really the whole gold thing is ridiculous--just a reason to make the product pricier without adding anything useful. This will be going into the ProjectBeautyShare.org pile.
Kiehl's Rare Earth Deep Pore Cleansing Masque :: This is my first masque of any type (used only one time). The texture of the cream is very smooth and a little goes a long way. While on my face, it felt first like it tightened a bit, then it tingled or prickled a little. It left my skin feeling smooth but a bit dry. My moisturizer solved the dryness, so hopefully that won't be a problem. Also hoping it will help with some of my skin issues, esp under my eyes and around my nose.
Origins Checks and Balances :: I'm not impressed. On the plus side, a little goes a long way and it lathers up well. But it left my skin feeling tacky. Not what I'm looking for in a face cleanser. Disappointed since I've heard good things about Origins, but my first experience has turned me off. This will be going into the ProjectBeautyShare.org pile.
Lord & Berry Glow Strobing Pencil :: I wasn't sure how I was going to use this since it's really too narrow for cheek highlighting (though it does blend out). I ended up using it under my brows for a highlight, but it didn't really add much shine or lightness and can blend out to invisibility pretty quickly. It doesn't seem to do much, but the color is pretty. This will be going into the ProjectBeautyShare.org pile.
Smashbox Be Legendary Liquid Lip :: This is in a gorgeous metallic red, which is a bit brighter than I’m used to but very pretty (I suspect this is a special shade, or possibly Crimson Chrome, but not sure). I haven’t used this full on because of the color—it’s a little intimidating. I have used it on top of other colors or as a shine in the center of my lips and have liked it that way.
The Beauty Protector Protect & Oil :: Went straight into the ProjectBeautyShare.org pile. I have a leave in conditioner I like and tend towards a slightly oily scalp, so I’d really rather not mess with it.
Overall the box was okay. I would have kept three of the products in the pencil had done more for me. But with future boxes having fewer in the cosmetic department doesn’t make it a good buy at $10/month.
So, yea, tried this, not continuing. :

BirchBox - December 2016
BirchBox is a subscription service that costs $10 per month. Each month you get a selection of beauty products in deluxe sized samples (sometimes full size) to try.
Accept my invitation to join BirchBox! https://www.birchbox.com/invite/TheFemmeDom
The theme is Shine On. BirchBox is here to help us master the holidays and shine our very brightest all December long. This box is filled with brilliant, festive products--plus treats for on-the-go touch ups and easy gifting.
This month I opted to select one sample because the featured box just wasn’t for me.
Keep reading to see what was in my December box.
1. Real Chemistry Luminous 3-Minute Peel
I got this peel in a small sample size, but the full size retails for $48.
This is the sample I chose this month.
I have recently started using peels instead of exfoliators. I couldn’t find a scrub that I really liked, so I gave peels a shot and I really like them.
2 & 3. Oribe Shampoo & Conditioner for Brilliance & Shine
I got these two samples in foil packets, but the full-size shampoo and conditioner retail for $49 each.
Just as all of the other hair product foil packets that I have received, I won't use these. Oribe is a great brand, but a foil packet will do nothing for my thick curly hair. It’s just not enough product for me to even sample.
I wish there was an option in the profile to ban foil packets and/or perfume samples.
4. Coastal Scents Blush & Bronzer Palette
I got this product in a small sample, but the full palette retails for $19.95.
To call this sample a palette is a bit of a joke. It looks nothing like the picture above. It’s a tiny, cardboard, square that is about half the size of a credit card. Inside, there are two small pans. One is a blush, the other is a bronzer. You do not get a selection of shades as pictured above.
After receiving a real, full-size, blush and bronzer palette from Coastal Scents in my August BOXYCHARM, I just can’t take this sample seriously.
5. Juliette Has a Gun MMMM…
I got this fragrance in a typical, small, perfume-sized sample. The full size retails for $100.
I don’t like getting perfume samples because I’m very sensitive to scents. I get migraines from walking through stores like Bath & Body Works or the fragrance area of department stores.
I also have a problem with getting items in subscription boxes that I could go to the store and get for free. If I was at a store and asked for a sample of this fragrance, this is exactly what I would be given for free.
With all that being said, I will tell you how I feel about this fragrance.
The description says that there are notes of vanilla, orange blossom, tonka bean (whatever the hell that is), and raspberry. What the description doesn’t tell you is that this fragrance has that gross perfumey smell and that it’s not worth the fraction of $10 that I paid for it, let alone $100 for the full size.
6. Marcelle CC Cream
I got this sample size CC Cream in the shade Golden Glow. The full size retails for $32.
I got the Marcelle BB Cream in Golden Glow in my August BirchBox and I really liked it. I thought the finish was beautiful and the shade was perfect for my skin tone. So I was very excited to receive another similar Marcelle product in the same shade.
7. Saphira Hair Mineral Mud
I got this hair mask in a sample size, but the full size retails for $31.
I’m not sure if this sample is large enough for me to get one full use out of it, but at least it’s not a foil packet.
What did you get in your December BirchBox?
